Crazy Conservative Congressman Who Likened Obama to Hitler Now Prays for Him

I always find it astonishing that so many people say they could never vote for an atheist, but they can vote for people like this.

I always find it astonishing that so many people, including America's Pastor Rick Warren, say they could never vote for an atheist, but they can vote for people like this:

On January 7, second-term Republican Rep. Paul Broun of Georgia and two friends prayed over a door. It was not just any door, but the entranceway beneath the Capitol that President-elect Barack Obama will pass through as he walks onto the inaugural stage to take the oath of office. "I hope and pray that as God stirs the heart of our new president that President Obama will listen and will heed God's direction," Broun proclaimed.

And then they anointed the door with oil.

In case you are wondering who is praying for our new president and anointing the door through which he'll walk:

While the Capitol prayer partners appeared earnest in the prayers for the president elect's success, they have each distinguished themselves from their Christian right comrades by leveling some of the most paranoid imprecations Obama has faced since he arrived in the Senate. On November 10, 2008, a week after Obama's election victory, Broun took umbrage at the President-elect's call for a national civilian security force, a proposal also backed by George W. Bush. According to Broun, who acknowledged the possibility that he might be "crazy," Obama had revealed himself as a radical Marxist Nazi socialist comparable to Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.

"It may sound a bit crazy and off base," Broun told an AP reporter, "but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force. I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may--may not, I hope not--but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism. That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did. When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist."

After seeming to back away from his comments when he was heavily criticized, Broun announced that he was "not taking back anything [he] said." "I firmly believe that we must not fall victim to the 'it can't happen here' mentality," he declared in a press release. "I adhere to the adage 'eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.'"

The son of a Democratic state senator from the liberal college town of Athens, Georgia, Broun attributes his conservative transformation to the wonder working power of Jesus. Broun's born-again moment arrived in 1986, during the height of the Reagan Revolution, while he toiled as a doctor in rural Georgia, struggling to keep afloat during the first year of his marriage. He had suffered through several "broken marriages and episodes of broken relationships and financial problems," Broun recalled during a November 2007 speech on the House floor. While watching an NFL game, Broun became entranced by a "gentleman with this big type hair wig on" holding a "John 3:16" sign. "As I sat there in my office that fall trying to figure out life, I picked up the Bible and read John 3:16," Broun said. He suddenly transformed into a true believer, a cadre of the Christian right.

(The wigged "gentleman" was Rollen Stewart, an evangelical fanatic and fixture at sports events who is currently serving three consecutive sentences in jail on kidnapping charges as well as several minor sentences for stink bomb attacks).

But voting for an atheist is nuts.

if this looney toon were preparing for the Inaugural. Imagine how it would be if the prayer were for themselves. Because it could have happened... it could have been Sarah Palin there with her witch doctor pastor annointing the doorway with oil and "blessing" her before being sworn in...

America dodged a bullet.

There's no reason to wonder why such people would never vote for an Atheist. It's really quite simple.

When you can not make your case to someone with rational arguments, you fall back on impassioned pleas on ethical or moral or compassionate grounds. If you have been raised to think that people who do not believe as you do are unethical or immoral, you have no further way to reach them.

People who fall victim to such patterns of not thinking are less competent as rational, free-thinking individuals, so they are generally less likely to be able to make sound, rational arguments. The fallback position is all they have. With no spiritual connection to someone through commonality of belief, they hold no cards.

All that being said, I am inclined to agree with this dipshit in one regard: the idea of a national security force does present the possibility of chilling consequences for civil liberties, regardless of who's at the helm. And keep in mind, that person changes from time to time. This is a rock best left unturned.

Isn't he guilty of vandalism?

Putting oil on the door or doorway... isn't that vandalism? I am sure it wasn't Lemon Pledge that they used; probably just cooking oil, which is not going to be good for the door.

What if another religious group, say Santaria, wanted to peform animal sacrifices at the White House? Wouldn't there be an outrage from the right?

I am sick and tired of these attempts to peform "Christian hocus pocus" and damage public property in a lame attempt to force their religion on others.

I say that someone should arrest those involved in vandalizing property at the White House.

Obama's a Nazi, George Bush's a Nazi. Wouldn't you like to be a Nazi too? (Be a Nazi. Drink Dr Nazi.)

EVERYONE is a Nazi, I guess. Well, Bush wins hands down (or should that be right hand extended outward?), he is the nation's number one Nazi! Congratulations, Mr President.

Only Socialist Marxism when helping the citizens, Not The Corps

Funny how 'socialism' is ONLY invoked when discussing social programs which help the citizens of this country, but considered a necessity to save the 'Free market' when bailing out corrupt CEO's.
Repugs have not yet comprehended the Fact that many of their consitutients jumped ship in Nov because the 'Redistribution of Wealth' sounded Good to them too. They are so ignorant (or complicite) they did not realize when disparaging the Auto workers, they were sending a clear message of disdain to EVERY American Worker.Lockheeds CEO 'we can get 9 Mexicans for the price of 1 american'- so they expect Americans to live in Poverty like Mexicans? hellova 'American Dream' or Way of life these guys invision- What a Patriot he is.
What they have also Missed is the Fact that Americans have been over satiated with their psuedo Religious dogma. They have effectively given Chrisitanity a Bad name again- like during the Inquistion and the Witch Trials.Anointing a door way is usually associated with Blessing a home and warding off 'evil spirits', I'm hoping they find that even with the door open they find it impenetrable, They are the 'Unholy'. .Not to mention UNAmerican.

As someone who was raised an atheist by two parents who were both PhDs in science, I can tell you that us atheists are nice folks who can be trusted!

It always amazes me that some people think if you haven't got religion, you have no moral compass.

And what do they hope to accomplish by pouring oil on the door? God likes them now because they made a mess?

They should be made to wipe up the oil with their own socks and then said socks should be stuffed into their mouths.

When us lefties compared W. to Hitler the righties screamed treason. This was after Georgie-poo and made several Hitleresque moves. You know, like politicizing the justice department and torturing people.

Now, all Obama has done is say citizens should work to help restore America and this is enough to compare him to the ultimate evil?

Oh well, I guess if someone is STUPID enough to pour oil on a door they can not be expected to know the difference between right and wrong. After all, the bible TELLS them they are not supposed to know the difference or God will be bummed! Isn't that little controversy of knowledge from the tree of life what started this entire mess?

Congressman Broun? from Georgia? Is Georgia a third world country? Do they have schools there? Running water? Newspapers? Can Americans adopt children from Georgia and get them out of there? Please adopt a Georgian and bring them to America.
