The news is out that Obama intends to nominate his technology adviser, Julius Genachowski to head the FCC.

During the campaign, Genachowski promoted a detailed technology and innovation plan that supports net neutrality protections, expansion of affordable broadband and media-ownership rules that encourage more diversity.

The 46-year-old Genachowski served as chief counsel to former FCC Chairman Reed Hundt from 1994-1997. He is also the co-founder of Rock Creek Ventures and LaunchBox Digital, a special adviser at General Atlantic, and a member of various boards of directors and advisers. From 1997-2005, he was a senior executive at IAC/InterActiveCorp, variously serving as chief of business operations, general counsel and a member of the office of the chairman.

Genachowski was responsible for the Obama campaign technology plan, diaried here by Nuisance Industry. The highlights of that agenda include an open Internet -- Net Neutrality, encouraging media diversification, strengthening privacy rights of consumers, and expanding affordable broadband access across the country. It's an ambitious and excellent plan that the telcos are going to hate.

Free Press, the media reform organization that's been leading the way on many of these issues, including Net Neutrality, applauds the choice:

Josh Silver, executive director of Free Press, issued the following statement:

"Under Julius Genachowski's leadership, the FCC's compass would point toward the public interest. President-elect Obama has provided a clear roadmap of his media and technology priorities. We share Obama's goals of creating a more diverse, democratic media system and providing fast, affordable, open Internet access for everyone. We greatly look forward to working with Mr. Genachowski to put the president-elect's plan into action.

"The challenges facing the next FCC are enormous -- a vast digital divide, an open Internet in jeopardy, consolidated media ownership, newsrooms in economic freefall and entrenched industries invested in maintaining the status quo. This moment calls for bold and immediate steps to spur competition, foster innovation and breathe new life into our communications sector. With his unique blend of business and governmental experience, Genachowski promises to provide the strong leadership we need."

The first challenge for Genachowski and Obama's tech/media team is dealing with the national switch to digital broadcast television on Feb. 17. Last week, Obama transition team co-chair John Podesta urged Congress to postpone that conversion. We found out last week that the funding for the digital converter box coupon program had run out. The program provided up to two $40 coupons to households who don't have cable to offset the cost of the converter. In rural and underserved areas, there are plenty of non-cable and satellite consumers, and the cost of the conversion could be onerous for many. It's a delay that makes sense from a consumer standpoint, and it's refreshing that the consumer is being considered for once.

Update: Via e-mail, news that the indie music community is encouraged, too. Here's the statement from the president of The American Association of Independent Music, Rich Bengloff:

"We are encouraged by the appointment of a supporter of net neutrality as FCC Chairman. Net neutrality is very important issue to the independent label community, as it assures equal access for players of all sizes to the technologies through which independent artists and labels promote and distribute their work. We hope this appointee will also respect Intellectual property and the need for artists and labels to be fairly compensated for the works they create."

Digg!

...environmentalist for the EPA, a physician for the FDA, and now a net and communications savvy dude for the FCC?

What it the world is he thinking! Why not follow the Boosh-Clunton model and give such posts to your drinking buddies or sex toys? This brave new world of a president appointing knowledgeable and competent people to federal policy-making spots is scary and unusual.

Maybe he was serious about that whole "change" meme after all, at least in bite-sized pieces. :)

Another BIG sign that Obama is for real. Compare this to the miscreants that Bush put in there.

There is a very fine line now between democracy and fascism in this country. The only thing keeping democracy intact is the free flow of information, and the only thing keeping us informed is the internet - once that is gone we might as well be in the former USSR with one state run TV station, Pravda.

peace,
Paul

I disagree with the idea that Obama's Cabinet choices have all been great. I surely wouldn't have put Clinton as head of State, and I would NEVER put Sanja Gupta, or however you spell his name, as Surgeon General--not that it's a Cabinet position, but it's still an important position for Obama to fill, and one with which I disagree.
But this sounds like truly good news. Obama has already indicated that many of his promises will be unfulfilled due to the economic mess. I hope, if he does try to do a good job, that he is not blamed for a crisis that was created under Bush, and under republican trickle-down economics.
Actually, trickle down does work: the money sometimes trickles down..some droplets fall on its gushing way to the top!!!
What we need is not tax cuts for the poor, since so many people are out of work, but tax increases on the rich. Most rich people pay hardly ANY taxes, nor do corporations--they've got fancy anti-trust lawyers to move their money offshore. We need to close those loopholes. Also, S.S. is in trouble because of government skimming off of the program, yet did you know that the wealthy do not pay any SS tax on any of their income over the first $109,000.00 dollars? I mean, maybe there should be a cut-off point, but it should be set much higher than this.It should be set to quit at about 300,000.00.

We need to reform our entire monetary system, so that money becomes an instrument of trade, and that's it! No manipulation of interest rates--in fact, NO FED! We need a silver backed, government created (the FED is NOT a government agency, but a private corporation)and circulated currency, and we need to get rid of fractional reserve banking, re-regulate the markets, bring back Glass-Steagal, etc. Against a backed currency far less succeptible to inflation, the FED will lose and we can let it die off naturally. It's un-constitutional, and it's a system based on credit and debt that cannot be sustained, and which causes the kind of mass income inequality we now see in America.
We must stop the republican attempts to destroy all our social programs and completely roll back everything FDR did. Are people aware that Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush, was part of a conspiracy to overthrow FDR? And that he also funded the Nazis with steel?
Also, IMB got its start in Nazi Germany, too. IMB's first computer system of punch cards was developed to keep track of the Jews.

Was a terrible thing, and now Israel, like a child that has been abused and then turns abuser on his own children, Israel is now doing the same type of evil unto the Palestinians, and it's NOT because Hamas fired a few rockets that, before the attacks, didn't even kill one person. Israel had developed this plan long in advance, so for them to say it's in response to the rockets Hamas fired--which are in response to Israeli occupation (Israel started this by occupying Palestine, and stealing their land)--is just a lie. And it's ridiculous to call people who feel sorry for the Palestinians anti-semetic, since the Paletinians are a semetic people, too!
What's even stranger is that Christians, Muslims, and Jews actually all worship the same Abrahamic God, and their differences are all due to whom they believe the true Prophet was, or wasn't..although the problems between Israel and Palestine are more complex than just religious differences...But there are many people who see what Israel is doing and cheer, for they believe it is a sign that the end is near! I know why they are so happy about that: they believe they are going to "Raptured Away" by some heavenly tractor beam.

If you believe in "rapture" you are believing in something that is not even IN the Bible. I don't know where this idea came from, but it did not come from any religious document.
Well, that's off the topic, but you see how I got here.
