NYT Reporter Warns of One-Term Obama?

Politico reports on a Sunday New York Times panel, where reporters had nothing but bad news for President-elect Barack Obama:

White House reporters for The New York Times predict that the market collapse will force President-elect Barack Obama to abandon for now many of his campaign promises.

If his stimulus plan "doesn't work out, he may very well be a one-term president," said Jeff Zeleny, who covered Obama's campaign. "It's hard to imagine that he could be reelected if the economy's in the exact same position four years from now."

Another reporter, Peter Baker, went on to say that Obama would have to give up fulfilling promises of universal health care and carbon emissions caps this year because of the economy.

Media Matters questions the dire predictions:

Funny, we don't recall any Times reporters suggesting Bush would be a one-term president days before his inauguration. But of course we do remember lots of reporters and pundits announcing that Bill Clinton had failed in his first month in office.

Note the double standard?

Digg!

Destined To Fail

I have to agree, actually, that there is a good chance Obama will indeed be a 1-term president. I personally doubt he will be able to right the economy. I doubt that ANY president would have been able to right the economy -- since it is so damaged by Bush's wars and tax-cuts and deregulation, and the Congress has only made it worse with their lack of oversight over how the bailout money has been spent.
And without the economy being corrected, and with everyone's high expectations of Obama's presidency being dashed, Obama could unjustifiably go down as one of America's worst presidents. (But not THE worst president. We all know who that is.)

In any case, I feel doomed. Why?
President Palin in 4 years???... Maybe!

I have to agree as well. The economy is heading for a train wreck and Obama is standing on the track with his arm out saying 'Stop'. It ain't gonna happen. He's going to get squashed. I wouldn't be surprised if the Republicans started taking back seats in the midterm as well.

Because we know how very rampant talk was of a single term Bush administration in the media.. EVEN BEFORE HE TOOK OFFICE.

Liberal media? Of course they call it a liberal media... that way no one ever suspects the truth... it is anything but.

One term Obama?

If he keeps acting just like Bush, calling for more billions in corporate welfare to failed, crooked capitalists, if he keeps up the war mongering, and goes Bush one better by cutting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, why should he have more than one term?

Of course, the question is whether or not there will be anyone worthwhile to vote for in four years. Maybe Kucinich will try again.

If Obama wants a second term (one hell of an assumption, considering the Democrats' history of impersonating the 'opposition' party - thrown elections and corporate 'centrism') he had better end two wars, Prosecute the criminals in the White House, the Pentagon, Wall Street, and the Fed. He had better use that executive privilege that Bush usurped for himself to declare 'martial law' against multinational corporations who have been robbing the treasury, whether through the banks or the defense dept. contracts. He had also better find himself a security detail other than those he should be prosecuting, or those that let JFK get his head blown off. I'd recommend that he hire them off the streets of LA or Chicago, whether they wear red or blue colors.

Then, he had better start rebuilding hospitals, schools, bridges, roads, and whatever else I missed. PUT AMERICANS TO WORK. Finally, he had better get behind alternative energy the way the U.S. got behind the race to the moon. I'm certain I missed a couple of dozen other things, but I'd guess that would be a good start.

Maybe a Hillary/Palin showdown in 4 years? Now that would be interesting.

WISHING DOESN'T MAKE IT SO

There seems to be an underlying wish for Obama to fail even before he takes office. If he goes down, we all go with him. Bush created the worst disaster this country has ever seen. It's childish to think that everything can be made right in a week. Nobody dared to pressure Bush, ever. Suddenly everyone is so well informed and knows exactly what Obama should do. If he's not up to expectations why even mention Sarah Palin. The chronic whining doesn't help. Take a breather. ANNA

Four years is a long time, esp. as economic cycles go. I don't believe recessions generally last more than 12-18 months. This appears to be a bad one, but still - my guess is things will be well into the turnaround phase by the 2012 election.

I believe the following to be true:
1. About a third of the US electorate would vote for the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal and against Jesus H. Christ, if told so by the likes of Limbaugh and their fundie preachers (let's ignore for a moment that neither is a natural born citizen of the US ;-) )
2. A significant percentage would make that choice even without being told just by seein that the former runs for the GOP anf the latter for the Dems
3. To get out of the crisis will hurt a lot of innocents. However it is done, it's unavoidable
4. Even people not part of the group described under 1&2 tend not to vote for people that seem to have hurt them (i.e. those that try to solve the problems) but for those that promise not to hurt them (despite no intention of keeping that promise)
5. The information flow that reaches the standard US voter is extremly biased against liberals and pro 'conservative'.
6. US voters are on average less informed and less (politically) intelligent than their counterparts in most other civilized countries (and quite a few less than civilized).
7. Obama is a fallible human.
8. The GOPsters will try all that is in their power to make Obama fail
9. If there is a new 9/11 (even a tiny one), any Dem in the WH is toast, even if it can be proven beyond reasonable doubt that there was no chance to prevent it.
10. Elections are still rigged in favor of GOP candidates
----
=> I expect:
1. The Dems will lose seats in Congress in the next midterm elections.
2. This will make sabotaging any Dem success even more easy
3. This will be blamed on the Dems not the GOP obstructors
4. Welcome your new Republican Overlord in 2012
5. You are doomed (and the rest of the world will be too with a limited time delay)
