Editor's Note: The following is a press release from the office of Rep. Dennis Kucinich

Congressman Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, today spoke out against a resolution affirming U.S. support for Israel's military action in Gaza. While a firm supporter of the people of Israel and a critic of rocket attacks by Hamas militants, Kucinich led opposition against the incomplete resolution.

HR 34, "Supporting Israel in Its Battle with Terrorist Hamas," is incomplete because it does not address the humanitarian crisis of Palestinians in Gaza, fails to insist on an immediate cease-fire and neglects Israel's potential violation of the Arms Export and Control Act, which governs U.S. arms exports to foreign countries.

The AECA requires that each nation that receives a shipment of arms from the United State must certify that the weapons are used for internal security and legitimate self-defense and that their use does not lead to an escalation of conflict. Kucinich informed the administration of Israel's possible violation of AECA through Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Jan. 6, 2009. Kucinich has yet to receive a response.

The full text of Kucinich's statement:

"In Gaza, the United Nations gave the Israeli army the coordinates of a U.N. school, and the school was then hit by Israeli tank fire, killing about 40. The U.N. put flags on emergency vehicles, coordinating the movements of those vehicles with the Israeli military, and the vehicles came under attack, killing emergency workers. The Israeli army evacuated 100 Palestinians to shelter, and then bombed the shelter, killing 30 people.

"Emergency workers have been blocked by the Israeli army from reaching hundreds of injured persons. Today's Washington Post (reports): '100 survivors rescued in Gaza from roads blocked from Israelis. Relief agencies fear more are trapped, days after neighborhood was shelled.' Today, the U.S. Congress is going to be asked to pass a resolution supporting Israel's actions in Gaza. I'm hopeful that we don't support the inhumanity that has been repeatedly expressed by the Israeli army. The U.S. abstained from a U.N. call for a cease-fire. We must take a new direction in the Middle East, and that new direction must be mindful of the inhumane conditions in Gaza.

I only wish that Obama could be half, nay one quarter the man Dennis is. It's too bad that Dennis will never be President, he doesn't think the right way for the corporate masters. Obama may be who you voted for but it's Dennis that you really wanted. The 'change' you 'hope' for with O-blah-blah would have a much better chance of being realized with Dennis as President. Oh well.

The Congressman views play into the PR war conducted by Hamas, andavoids the cause of what is going on, Hamas' desire to destroy Israel.

Were Hamas responsible they would of never began by smuggling weapons into Gaza and then firing off rockets into Israel.

For saying what the other members of Congress don't have the BALLS to say!

Wrong is wrong. I do not support my tax dollars being used to fund this despicable war Israel is waging against the Palestinian people.

Enough!

State serves corporate interests

State terrorism - good (morally spreading democracy)

Small groups (a few pointlessly hateful, most the vengeful victims of State aggression/terrorism) attack State

Small group terrorism - bad (immoral destroyers)

That's all most Americans seem to "know" about the issue.

Almost unbelievable.

The US Senate's unanimous endorsement of Israeli atrocities, including the slaughter of hundreds of children, women, elderly people, paramedics and aid workers, its blockade of food and medical supplies, and its shelling of homes, schools, health facilities and other unlawful targets is, even for those of us who support Israel as a state, criminal. The US government's encouragement and provision of weapons makes it an accomplice to the crimes, adds to anti-US sentiment worldwide, and makes us targets of terrorists. Our pronouncements on the human rights records of others are greeted with the derision they deserve.

As if its complicity with the Bush-Cheney war crimes weren't enough, our politicians just couldn't resist endorsing those of another nation. Shame on us.

HEY NANCY WHERE THE ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT??? Still in Committee, what a useless P.O.S. Pelosi is. As a Life long Dem and a female I must say we have the WORST group of Women in both Houses, most notably Nan, Diane and Hillary. Frankly I can't tell which party members they spend Blowing more often- The Dems or the Repugs. An embarassment for All Dems and Women! The only one who could have been a bigger National embarassment or detriment would have been Sarah. Bet they are all BFF, shopping buddies.
As for Israel, time for some Tough Love....Let them deal with the branch they have scooted themselves out on ...No More $$$, Weapons or Political Protection. Israel has proven it does not give a shit about their own people, the Jews around the world and Certainly Not US!
Any attack on American or America will be a direct result of Foreign policy. I Will be blaming not only Israel and Our politicians, I will be Pointing my finger straight at the Religious Right! You too will not be able to wash the blood off your hands. Israel is shooting 'fish' in a barrel, a Mortal Sin in All three Religions.
God I am Beginning to HATE Israel!!! My prayers go out to those caught in the needless cross fire of Religious Egocentrism, and for thre Lightening bolts to similtaneously destroy their "holy" sacred Brick & Mortar 'Cows'. Perhaps then they will realize Gods Trying to tell them something!

I am grateful that someone from congress has made a public statement about Israel's over actions. Of course Israel has the right to defend its self. What they are doing now is not self defense, they are intent on showing their power.

For over 50 year the world has witnessed this back and forth with Israel and the it neighbors fighting over who owns the land based on a religious history. It appears that the Middle Eastern Countries are incapable of living in 21st century.

Dennis Kucinich was my choice for president, but the media and vastly uneducated American public give him no attention. Obama is a "war" president just like Bush...out of Iraq..into Afghanistan...support Israel regardless of their criminal actions, build the military....etc. We need peace..We need to decrease the military budget by half...we need to keep the CIA out of the internal affairs of countries with which we disagree...we need to stop supporting right wing dictatorships. If we want peace in the Middle East we must demand that Israel obey UN Resolutions passed in 1967!! The US is complicituous, as usual, in terrorism and aggression.

Against Blind Support of Israel

Thankfully, at least one member of Congress is against the blind support of Israel. Why can't Congress see that just as in Iraq, when the entire rest of the world is saying we're wrong, maybe we should listen to them? And listen to others among us who are saying the same things for the same reasons? But Congress ignored the 5 Million people in the world's largest demonstration - agains attacking Iraq - and will ignor the millions of of and the rest of the world about the atrocities of Israel.

I hope that Dennis can get somewhere with the argument that Israel is not allowed to use US arms int his way. Every bomb dropped in Gaza has "Made in the USA" written on it.

Please - NOT IN MY NAME should this continue.

I'm appalled at the slaughter of Palestinian civilians Israel is carrying out with our American tax dollars and weapons we provided. The whole world knows this is our war as much as Israel's, and it's time, way past time, to stop our support for this apartheid government's war crimes. I hope President Obama will open talks with Hamas, and seek a just peace for Palestinians. The whole world is watching.

Kucinich

DK is one of a handful ( very small hand) of rep's in Washington that is not in the pocket of anyone. A true statesman, honest and a true champion of PEACE. Obama would have been wise to select him as Sec. of State. Of course, we all know it wouldn't have happened and the world will be worse for it. I appreciate what he did in 04 by sticking it out until the end and I understand his motive behind dropping out in 08 to insure that the right would not steal his seat. I voted for him both times in the primary and I never felt it was a wasted vote. Rock on DK!

The Right Thing to Do

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Yes, I’m a Dennis Kucinich supporter too. Once again he doesn’t do what is politically expedient or ‘correct’ but what, in his opinion, is the right thing to do.
Back in the early forties (1943 to be exact), when my home country was occupied by the Axis forces, my mother put her whole family in jeopardy by harboring a Jewish friend of hers, her husband and her two children on their attempt to escape Europe and the Nazis through Portugal. Later she told me that she did what she did because it was the right thing to do.
Following the collapse of Italy in September 1943, the Germans replaced the Italian forces that until then occupied our part of the country, with their own divisions. In early October, they set on fire a small village, up in the mountain across the lake. It was dusk, it was getting very cold and my first thought was: where will these people sleep tonight? I looked at my mother who had tears in her eyes, and asked her why the Germans were burning the homes of these people and she said “because they can and because there is nobody who can stop them now”. Later I was to learn that every one, except a handful who managed to run away, was gathered at the village square and executed, man, women and children and that this inhuman act was euphemistically called ‘collective punishment’ because the villagers were suspected of helping the Partisans. Indeed some of them were doing it. And they were doing it because they felt it was the right thing to do and this despite the fact that the known reprisal ratio was 100 : 1 for a common soldier (Lydiche and Oradur-sur-glan, however, exemplify what could truly be the unleashed bestiality of the SS when more that that was involved)
Rachel Corrie, 22 yrs old, was bulldozed to death in 2003 by protesting the ‘collective punishment’ of Palestinians when she stood in front of an Israeli bulldozer demolishing Palestinian houses. I remember reading that the destroyed houses belonged to relatives of known terrorists – and of course that made it perfectly acceptable.
I like Jewish people much more than I like Arabs primarily because of the way women are treated in their societies. My daughter-in-law is Jewish and most of my friends, especially when I was attending University in Europe in the late 50s – early 60s, were Jewish. That was also a time when the prevalent posters at student dormitories were of Fidel Castro and ‘Che’ Guevara and when the Left in Europe was strongly supportive of the Jews (although I now suspect it was primarily the ‘political correct’ thing to do).
I’m not a religious person, I accept nothing at face value, I do have prejudices (I’m an anti-fascist) and I like to form my own opinion. In the case of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I have conflicting sentiments. I feel the Jews have suffered tremendously – and not just recently at the hands of Hitler’s henchmen –and I was hoping that somehow a solution for pacific coexistence could be found between them and the Arabs. It saddens me, however, to see an apartheid state being built there, the fear factor exploited to its fullest extent by the Israeli extreme right and the very same victims of fascism atrocities convinced they have to adopt the same oppressive tactics towards the Palestinians. And yes, I agree with Kucinich.

Arrogance of Israelis and Palestinians

The arrogance and presumption of both Israelis and Palestinians is sickening. They seem to think that they can do anything and the rest of the world will just have to put up with it. There’s coming a tipping point in which the people of the United States and the people of Moderate Arab and Muslim states will say, it’s not worth it any longer — and wash their hands of them. Only then, when the enabling stops, will there be an opportunity for peace.

I tried to post there but didn't get through.
More House Members Stand Up to Israel Than in '06

I wanted to post information but this bit really threw me off,

You agree not to use the TPM websites or the Service to:
upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available ("Post") any Content:
- that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, false or inaccurate, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;

How can we criticize Israeli policy without being "racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable"?
It might be a serious flaw to their site.

Here is some of the post I thought was cool,

Candidates for U.S. House endorsed by J Street in October, 2008 :

Ethan Berkowitz (D, AK-At-Large)
• Rep. Bill Delahunt (D, MA-10)
• Rep. Michael Capuano (D, MA-08)
• Rep. Geoff Davis (R, KY-04)
• Rep. Barney Frank (D, MA-04)
• Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D, NY-22)
• Dan Maffei (D, NY-25)
• Eric Massa (D, NY-29)
• Rep. George Miller (D, CA-07)
• Gary Peters (D, MI-09)
• Jared Polis (D, CO-02)
• Rep. Charles Rangel (D, NY-15)
• Rep. Adam Schiff (D, CA-29)
• Rep. Hilda Solis (D, CA-32)
• Rep. John Yarmuth (D, KY-03)
Among them are three Committee Chairmen (Reps. Rangel (Ways and Means), Frank (Financial
Services) and Miller (Education and Labor)), senior Members of the House Foreign Affairs
Committee (Rep. Delahunt) and the House Appropriations Committee (Reps. Schiff and
Hinchey), leading Members of the Hispanic (Rep. Solis) and Black (Rep. Rangel) Caucuses, two
retired naval commanders (Mr. Massa and Mr. Peters) and a former member of the multinational
Sinai peacekeeping force (Rep. Davis).

Then look at the list of the 31 Representatives who opposed the resolution or voted present:

---- NAYS 5 ---

Kucinich
Moore (WI)
Paul
Rahall
Waters

---- ANSWERED “PRESENT” 22 ---

Abercrombie
Blumenauer
DeFazio
Dingell
Edwards (MD)
Ellison
Farr
Grijalva
Hinchey
Johnson (GA)
Kilpatrick (MI)
Lee (CA)
McCollum
McDermott
Miller, George
Moran (VA)
Olver
Payne
Sanchez, Loretta
Stark
Watson
Woolsey

Now, tell us, how many of J Street's favored candidates really stood up to AIPAC and refused to support the resolution? Did Barney Frank? NO. Did Charlie Rangel? NO. Did Adam Schiff? NO. Did newly elected Members Dan Maffei and Eric Massa? NO. Well, you get the idea--J Street is a joke.

Naturally my post-ability is all screwed up there so I can't explain it.

He's brave enough to tell the truth. Spin doctors and naysayers don't like the truth. But consistantly, Dennis Kucinich has laid it out articulately and factually.
Now it's time for Congress to follow his lead.

As usual, Dennis Kucinich speaks for reason and morality. The militants on both sides must be challenged, not just the Palestinians. The lop-sided death toll reveals to the world that the Israeli military is ready and willing to kill innocent Arabs, seemingly for the fun of it. They are driving a wedge into the very heart of world peace. We Americans need to seriously reappraise why we consider Israel to be a friend.
