It's Not Too Late: Demand Obama Investigate Bush's War Crimes

Posted by Digby, Hullabaloo at 9:24 AM on January 5, 2009.

This is particularly important, since the press has only asked Obama about this one time.

Over the holiday break I wrote a post about and initiative spearheaded by Ari Melber of the Nation and Democrats.com to ask President-elect Obama if he will appoint a special prosecutor to investigate war crimes in the Bush administration over at Change.gov. (In a previous round, it was the sixth most asked question, and the new administration has only agreed to answer the first five, so it went unanswered. )

This time, through their efforts, it's number one. This is particularly important, since the press has only asked Obama about this one time, last April. And a lot has happened since then, most obviously the fact that Vice President is all over television admitting to war crimes as if he's proud of it.

Democrats.com quotes Melber saying:

"With so few journalists directly asking the President-Elect about these issues, however, it is up to the rest of us to put accountability and the rule of law on the agenda."

Yes we can.

The voting is still open:

Voting remains open:

  1. Sign in at http://change.gov/openforquestions
  2. On the left menu, click "Additional Issues." Bob Fertik's question will appear at the top.
  3. Look right for the checkbox, mouseover it so it goes from white to dark, then click to cast your vote

of the people's web site and what I am dubbing as Les Obama Presidential Matrix.
The Obama team was ahead of the curve in recognizing the potential of the Internet for his campaign and for changing the way politics is conducted in America.
The rise of this question (congrats Alternet) to number one will be the first test for the effectiveness of the matrix and the people's voice.

It would be a waste of time until we investigate 9/11

Yes, there's lots of things to be investigated. But none of them will get real traction. Bush/Cheyney will continue to blame the horrors of 9/11 for the actions they took. And they have a point. If we were really attacked like they said, extraordinary steps are logical, at least in most people's minds. Wiretapping to find the terrorists, wars, torture of sorts to extract information. The problem is many people will say the rules had to change because of the threats, and the prosecution will go no where.
The only hope to really make a prosecution stick is to expose the coverup and complicity by the administration of 9/11. It would not be hard. The work has mostly been done, by David Ray Griffin, Steven Jones, Michael Ruppert, Gage, Kevin Ryan, and others. They put themselves on the line against overwhelming pressure to investigate with whatever they had. But the press, the alternative press has let these great patriots down.
We do not have an alternative media that will do what journalist should have done all along.........follow the evidence against the official story of 9/11............with the exception of Alex Jones. Alternet, Amy Goodman, antiwar.com, the Nation, Znet, MotherJones, Common Dreams, Counterpunch, and the rest have self censored themselves. They have had thousands of articles about torture, the lies of WMD, wiretapping, and Sarah Palin's spending sprees, but they will not do an adequate, even minimal, job with 9/11 Truth. We therefore, as a nation, are propagandized without resources the greatest crime in our history. The fourth estate, including Alternet, has let us down. And we can blame the wars, the trashing of the Constitution, the bombings and massacres abroad, the torture, the hatred against the US, and so much more on Alternet and the others.
It is horrible to think now that we could have avoided all of this if alternet and Amy and Noam Chomsky could have had the courage to do what alternative media has always done.........follow the obvious leads. Instead they ignore the stories...........the biggest stories of modern history. It is preposterous! Who got to them. Considering the damage that has been done because of their purposeful negligence, our journalists might be considered one day the very worst of international criminals of all time. How do you feel now about the crimes of Bush, knowing our journalists have conspired with them to withhold the truth, the truth that really could have set us free?

We don't just need prosecution for the crimes committed over the last 8 yrs, we need prosecution for the crimes committed by Cheney,Rummy & Wolfie for the last 40 yrs!
These Three & their Copr cronies have not only led US into unnecessary wars, but have created a Feudal Caste System with all rights and freedoms confiscated for the benefit of Multinational Corps....Treason.
We thought Nixon delusional when he claimed 'If the pres does it, it is Not illegal'...It ws not a delusion it was a mission...And They have succeeded finally in the W admin to make it a reality...A Kingship to Rule US. We Conquered One George Only to be conquered by another George.
CheneyCorp has undermined the two basic American Principles- a True Free market for the People (and By the people) and The Politcal Free Will of democracy. These men have thrown Americans back to the age before our founding, they have destroyed everything they fought & died for. But instead of a Ruling Family Crest we are ruled by Logos!
Come on Cheney ,Rummy and wolfie were in the admin which tried to undermine our free elctions in 72 (Watergate). They wer intrical in the Admin which conspired to undermine a sitting Pres (Iran contra).During which time they also bolstered the reputations and Power of our recent 'enemies' (Saddam, Bin laden,Hamas). And Of course such behaviors have been perpetuated during W's reign...Ya think W came up with this shit himself?
I want their heads (and their Co conspirators) heads on Recycled paper plates! In fact lets run their trials like 'American Idol'...Viewer votes, should only take a few minutes to convict them. A Speedy Trial by a Jury of Your Peers(Bosses)!"So" should be enough to get Cheneys head removed from his shoulders (after a few lessons on the Board)
Treason,War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity- pick one and execute them.

Does anybody REALLY believe that the Obama administration will investigate the Bush administration's crimes... AT ALL?
Since when did Obama start listening to his progressive base? Have I missed something?

O-blah-blah will NEVER investigate Bush and Co. Just like NancyPants Pelosi and her 'impeachment is off the table', O-blah-blah will say something along the lines of pulling together, national unity blah-blah.

Please DO NOT expect anything of O-blah-blah that you wouldn't expect from the good ole Bill Clowntown administration. O-blah-blah is a center-right Democrat and he's going to act that way.

Obama doesn't even has his foot in the door yet and we are making demands. Give this "piece" a chance.

This is akin to having a new store manager walk in the front door and then having 40 employees set upon him in the first ten minutes, telling him how to run the store. Relax: he knows his predecessor was a jerk.

Slow down. Stop, Take a breath, wait, Listen.

I'm quite certain that you would not be happy if I "demanded" that you alter your life to live it my way.

A case for the United Nations to handle

This is not something that should be investigated by the United States government. The United Nations should investigate, since Afghanistan and Iraq were and still are sovereign members of the UN, and any war crimes that Cheney is boasting about were done in relation to the invasions and occupations of those two countries with or without the sanction of the United Nations.
Don't tell me details about the World Court etc., I'm not an expert on International Law...I just don't think we should waste our government resources and divide our country politically when the investigation needs to be done by an objective, non-partisan, international agency.

how about a truth and reconciliation commission?

to give the living operatives from the JFK, MLK, RFK, John Lennon, Paul Wellstone, JFK Jr, Pat Tillman, and Mike Connell assassinations, as well as the October Surprise, Iran
Contra and 9/11 false flag operation, to come forward and get it off their chest.

there is an astounding illegitimacy to the US government until these crimes are put to justice.

i agree change.gov is part of the coverup....

Just as Democrats let those who squat and crapped on our constitution and laws during Nixon's Watergate, Reagan's Iran-Contra and Bush I's Savings and Loan scandal, this LIMP-DICK DEMOCRATIC PARTY and their leader, Mr. Obama will do likewise. They will take a "principled" stand against the seating of Al
Franken and Roland Burris but illegal wiretapping, murder, kidnapping, torture, rigging elections, bastardizing the Justice Department, ending habeas corpus and on and 0n...this Democratic "leadership" is and will remain silent.
THE REPBLICANS ARE ACTORS...THE DEMOCRATS ARE ENABLERS. I voted for Obama but know in my gut Nader was right...Dem or Rep... two sides of the same coin.

So any response from Team Obama on accountability as yet? Do we know which and how many of our elected officals feel that there is still a great need to pursue
accountability and to place charges against the many individuals involved in the travesties commited by the Bush administration? This is not a witch hunt but a demand for justice.
