Conservatives' Crazy Conspiracy Theories About the Econapocalypse

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 7:23 AM on December 23, 2008.

Keep in mind, these aren't just some poor men ranting on a street corner; they are well-paid, well-connected conservative media personalities.

For a while, before the presidential campaign, conservatives on Fox News and talk radio had an idea: the economy wasn't that bad, but Americans had been led to believe it was, thanks to an elaborate conspiracy involving the media and Democrats.

After the election, high-profile conservatives, including Bill O'Reilly and Karl Rove, publicly described a new theory: an elaborate conspiracy involving the media and Democrats is still working to convince Americans the economy is in bad shape, so as to help Barack Obama appear even more impressive when conditions turn around.

This week, we have yet another conspiracy theory, this time from Rush Limbaugh, who's just delusional enough to believe Democrats, most notably Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), deliberately created the global economic crisis for partisan gain.

Here's how Limbaugh's conspiracy theory goes: Schumer caused on run on IndyMac bank in California this summer, in order to create a feeling of financial panic amongst the public. Democrats then capitalized on this panic with electoral wins in the White House and Congress. The purpose of gaining this power, according to Limbaugh, was to nationalize U.S. industries:

"Who's benefiting? Aside from the people being bailed out. The Democrat [sic] Party and Barack Obama are benefiting.

"They got elected, they increased their numbers in the House, they increased their numbers in the Senate, they got the White House now, and they've got a crisis that people think can only be fixed with the all-mighty and powerful government interceding to save this or to save that, when in fact, the government is going to nationalize the automobile industry. It's going to nationalize some banks. It's going to nationalize the mortgage industry, and may end up nationalizing the automobile industry."

Keep in mind, this isn't just some poor man ranting on a street corner; this is a well-paid, well-connected conservative media personality.

It just doesn't occur to any of these clowns that the economy really is in awful shape, and Bush's conservative economic policies fueled the crisis. Since reality couldn't possibly be true, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Rove, and others concoct these bizarre ideas about conspiracies to help them make sense of the world. It's kind of sad, really.

Krugman added, "Why does such stuff flourish? Probably because there is no punishment for it -- as long as you're on the right, and I mean right, side."

Digg!

Will Joe Lieberman Be the Only Dem to Sabotage Health Reform?
Joe Lieberman will work with Republicans to kill health care reform, no matter the consequences for the millions who are counting on this bill to pass.

What Does it Mean to Take Sarah Palin and the Tea-Bagger Set "Seriously"?

Everyone's Talking About Stupak, But What About the Health Care Bill's More Insidious Features?
The current bill involves some quietly coercive (and racist) provisions that no one wants to mention.

Their "logic" is so convoluted and twisted, I find it hard to believe that anyone else but the wing-nut blowhards believe what they spout, but people are actually buying into this!

I talked to a guy yesterday who was telling me about this. I laughed out loud when he regurgitated this crap... with a straight face... and I couldn't help myself! I did my best to straighten the poor man out, but I'm not sure I really got through.

Wonder how they will explain it when our economy actually gets much worse over the next year or so? Oh, yeah! Then it will be the Democrats' fault! I get it!

These guys are sick and twisted.

I'll tell you what's sad: that more and more people are falling into poverty and homelessness while jerkoffs like O'Reilly get a pulpit to spread their crap and laugh all the way to the bank.

We must pass a 28th amendment seperating Corporation and State and legislation that un-does the ability of groups to be treated as a person. A company is not a person, and this power--the power to become a "corporation" with all the powers of an individual (but who can cross borders effortlessly and with nearly unlimited funds)has destroyed our democratic Republic and turned our country into a form of Corporatism, or what Mussolini said was the true definition of Fascism--the perfect merger of State and Corporate power.
This is what we MUST fight, or suffer the consequences, as we already are; but they will become much worse.
We also need to return to a sound, constitutional monetary system, and phase-out the unconstitutional Federal Reserve bank and the practice of fractional reserve banking.
If we could accomplish these two things, then the path will be clear for us to address these other issues: the need for sustainable,
carbon-free energy, an end to endless war, poverty,NAFTA, CAFTA, NAU, etc. The financial crisis will fix itself once we return to constitutional money and stop letting these bankers take our wealth through the invisible tax that inflation truly is. And the power of
corporations will be seriously contained once their power to act and have the rights of an individual are taken away--which should have never been given, and though there is no law strictly prohibiting this in the Constitution, it's only because they never thought about it. If they had thought anyone would be crazy enough to do such a thing, they would have strictly forbidden it.

Saying "Drill baby drill" made the cost of oil go down

Back when oil prices first started to fall, Sean Hannity and Newt Gingrich claimed that the American right wing's advocacy for more domestic oil production was the cause of the reduction in the price of oil. They did not see the drop in price as being the result of a drop in demand and they also denied that the economy was in recession. These guys do this kind of shit all the time. It's their MO. They take credit for stuff that has nothing to do with them and they blame progressives for every perceived American problem. What really gets me is I have this nagging feeling that they KNOW they are lying; that they really do not believe the excrement that they spew, that somehow this is for them a kind of joke that they are playing on the public... some kind of sick surreal comedy... like the other night's Cheney/Wallace show...

You see they have made so much money in the past 8 years ,they go to and from work in limos or SUV's with dark tinted windows and they cannot see all the foreclosure signs all over the country.Businesses have closed due to lack of business and inability to keep their doors open for lack of working customers who have something to spend. Let us forgive them for their moronic life style and belief systems. In the spirit of the season Peace be with You.
