Why Obama's Rick Warren Choice Is Pissing Off Conservatives Too

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 1:54 PM on December 18, 2008.

In an interesting twist, plenty of conservatives are mad, not at Obama for inviting Warren, but at Warren for accepting the invitation.

One need not look too hard to find someone on the left who's upset about Rick Warren delivering the invocation at Barack Obama's inauguration. But as it happens, liberals aren't the only one who are upset by the news.

In an interesting twist, plenty of conservatives are mad, not at Obama for inviting Warren, but at Warren for accepting the invitation.

David Brody, a correspondent for TV preacher Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network, reported today that he's been "flooded with emails and most of them absolutely rip Pastor Warren for doing this."

Brody doesn't seem to share their concerns -- he asks, "Why can't a pro-life pastor pray for a pro-choice candidate?" -- but he republished a variety of the angry emails. This one stood out:

"Unless Rick Warren has changed, he is very disappointing in the pro-life cause. Just ask pro-life leaders their opinion. He doesn't like to deal with it at his church. It just seems funny that he is known as 'pro-life' when he largely ignores the subject and teaches others to do the same. I fear God for these 'men of God'. We have lost 50 million babies, and most won't say a word. Reminds me of Nazi Germany or our slavery days. Very few spoke out. It was more comfortable to keep quiet."

Here's another:

"I have had about all I can stand of Rick Warren's double standards. WHOSE side is he really on anyway? I'm beginning to think all he cares about are his questionable political connections. When I saw your article announcing his participation in "that one's" so called inauguration ceremony it absolutely sickened me. It isn't enough Obama is so full of himself that he "thinks" he's God. - Apparently now Rick Warren believes he is too. This is a complete mockery of all things sacred."

We can now expect the inevitable onslaught of reports indicating that "extremists on both sides" have expressed concerns about Warren's role at the inauguration.

Digg!

I would hate to think that conservative evangelicals were more given to compromise, charity and understanding than their counterparts across the great divide.

Splinter, baby, splinter!!!
---------------------
Pigface Warren will open the ceremony. The righteous, honorable Rev. Joe Lowery will close the ceremony. The ceremony's Xtian arc will proceed from the profane lowlife haters of the past, to the lofty expansive dreamers for our future.

is, in fact, another Clinton (not surprising when you look at his picks). That is, he is just another Republican Lite like Bill and Hillary. Repugs pretending to be liberals. America has moved so far to the right that Obama no longer knows what it means to be liberal. He thinks it means to be Bill Clinton without the sex scandal.

The only thing good you can say about Obama so far is that, whereas McCain and Palin represented the fascist wing of the republican party, Obama represents the left wing of it. And it is better to get slapped a few times by a Republican Lite than beaten half to death by the likes of the Neocons.

It's too bad nobody remembers what real progressives were all about. If they did, they would have voted for Kusinich.

The Washington Post's comment section on the Warren pick is loaded with invective from gays who feel betrayed by Barack. I think the point Barack is making to the faithful is that he was not just talking through his hat when he ran on the idea of change. What kind of change would it be to merely reflect the mirror image of the haters and counterfeit Christians who have been spewing their toxic message of racism, sexism, ignorance, repression and violence for the past eight years? Barack says he is going to be EVERYBODY's president and he is putting a fine point on that now.

Oh, and all you dope smokers out there who somehow got the idea that Barack was going to let you start firing up doobies at work: He isn't going to squander his capital on wedge issues that will feed the right's hate machine-- just yet. First, he's going to invite everybody to the table. I assure you, Limbaugh is squirting out both ends with dyspeptic rage because Barack refuses to follow his script.

INVOCATION

“God’s chosen me,” said Pastor Warren,
“To help Obama find his way
As President he goes explorin’
On whether it is A-OK
The day that he’s inaugurated
To force the gays to be castrated;
And whether he should form a plan
To have the Air Force bomb Iran.
I’ll say he should be purpose driven
And dedicate his life to God
And make himself the Lord’s vice squad.
And when America’s forgiven,
We’ll sit down have James Dobson in
And show him that you play to win.”

Are there no lean evangelicals? No progressive ones Obama could have invited? OR why not really go for change--a Buddist (Dali Lama anyone?) or other POV?

AT first, when I realized his picks were not what I expected, I then thought, "Oh, this guy is smarter than the past 40 years of leaders put together that we have had and now he's going to prove it." Yes, he is "OUR" President-elect. And once again, to run a ship effectively, he needs to KNOW where the Rats are, how much damage they do and then run them off the ship. Why would I question this level of intellegence? To all of hotheads out there, this man is no bodys puppet!

Personally I find the whole invocation and benediction thing absurd. This is a secular republic and I don't really see what we gain having folks of any faith pray over the president-elect.

That said, I do think that Obama is showing more intelligence and insight than most liberals who are having a fit about his choices. We all want to give lip service to the idea that we are not "read or blue" but the task of becoming purple seems to drive people insane. You either are going to make the effort to draw folks together and build on points of agreement and agree to disagree on points of conflict or you are going to dwell in your fortress and throw rocks at the other side.

Now that we won, we want it all to go back to the way it was with the sole exception that our side is running the show and the other side can wallow in the mud. Rick Warren, for all his flaws, has been actively leading conservative evangelicals on issues like AIDS, anti-poverty and climate change. Those are all pretty important questions for our planet. Given time, we can move folks like Warren on other issues - and some may already be won except in the public forum.

I think Obama is telling us he is a strong leader - not a weak one - and that he has the ability to manage conflict and dissent without comrpomising his own values and ideas. When was the last time we had such a president?

That means something good, right?

That first angry letter was an example of devilish values. How can you see the complaint about 'losing babies' juxtaposed so glibly with slavery without knowing the really spiteful purposes of anti-contraception laws!

and google Rev. Lowery. Oh what the hell, I'll do it for you http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Lowery.

We're going to see two wildly different versions of Christian on Jan. 20. Now, I agree with whomever who wrote above that religion, of any kind, is probably out of place at an official event such as this, but, if the President elect will obtain some comfort from these rituals, I certainly don't begrudge him that. We all have a lot of work ahead of us, and he's going to be the guy who will ultimately be held responsible for it getting done.

I say, enjoy the show on Jan. 20.

Phony hypocritical "Christians"

Wow! Those comment emails are something else! Since when can't a Christian of any stripe pray for ANYONE? That seems to be miles from the teachings of Jesus Christ and headed the other way.

But this is sort of the problem with Right Wing Evangelicals as far as politics. The Middle East has it's fair share of religious fundamentalists with their beliefs that anything against their faith is worthy of killing and it seems to me these 'good folks' aren't too far from taking that position.

In fact, it is one hell of a stretch to call them Christian in any sense.

If Rick Warren really believed that human rights and choice were as evil as he says, then he would liken Obama to the devil himself. The fact that he joins in celebrating the inauguration shows him for what he is. Obama has maintained his commitment to these issues. Warren has compromised his.

President-elect Obama is all-inclusive, believers and non-believers, persons from all faiths who live in this country, native Americans and naturalized Americans regardless of faith or no faith - one of the most transparently true representatives of all of us regardless of race or gender or sexual orientation! What's the matter with you people? It's your belief if you're for gay marriage and it's my belief that marriage is for a man and a woman but I have a couple of gay friends! I believe God made them that way and I will not listen to the evangelicals who preach one thing on Sunday then go out and do as they please otherwise, like some leading "ministers" of the gospel who hire prostitutes in secret - but we caught them, didn't we? Gays? Evangelicals? Methodists? Baptists? Catholics? Jews? Muslims? Black? White? Brown? We find them all in America, and I think that's just great! It's the people of any faith that believe theirs is the ONLY way that I detest!

It's going to be the most carefully worded prayer since Moses took dictation for delivery to the children of Israel.

Rick Warren is now being schooled in tightrope walking, and is damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. It's he, not Barack, who will be in the hot seat come January 20th. I'm beginning to enjoy this.

Warren is just another Pulpit Pimp! I don't care who gives the prayer - it means nothing! John Dobson, Focus on the Family, Christian Coalition, American Family Assn., Baptist Convention, Robertson et. al. could care less about this so long as the "faithful" keep sending money to "their" god! These are very sick people! I "pray" for "good riddance" in 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!
