Rove: We Wouldn't Have Invaded Iraq if We Knew the Truth About WMDs

In what was a remarkable admission that contradicted -- to a large extent -- the past statements from his onetime boss, former Bush strategist Karl Rove said on Tuesday evening that had the President known Iraq did not possess weapons of mass destruction, the United States would not have gone to war.

"In the aftermath of 9/11 the concern was about a tyrant accused of enormous human rights abuses," but who also possessed weapons of mass destruction, said Rove. "Absent that, I suspect that the administration's course of action would have been to work to find more creative ways to constrain him like in the 90s."

The remarks, delivered at a debate in New York on Bush's legacy, came amidst a vigorous defense by Rove on behalf of the war's purpose and outcome. Later he argued that Saddam Hussein was supporting terrorism, poised a grave threat to the region, and had systematically duped the international community into assuming he was armed.

"He told his interrogators it made him look big in the neighborhood," said Rove, before noting all of the Democratic officials who believed as much.

As such, Rove argued, the Bush administration was justified in the course it chose and the world better off for its actions.

And yet, his remarks stand in contrast to those offered by the president himself, both recently and in the past. In an interview that aired last night with ABC's Charlie Gibson, Bush declared that the greatest regret of his presidency was "the intelligence failure in Iraq." But he claimed it was "hard... to speculate" as to whether or not he would make the same decision to invade with the correct information.

Back in December 2005, however, Bush did just that, declaring the WMD issue effectively irrelevant when he said that, "knowing what I know today, I would have still made that decision."

"So, if you had had this -- if the weapons had been out of the equation because the intelligence did not conclude that he had them, it was still the right call?" Fox News' Brit Hume asked.

"Absolutely," replied Bush.

On Tuesday night, Rove wasn't the only Iraq war protagonist indulging in a bit of retrospection. Bill Kristol, of the Weekly Standard and Project for a New American Century fame, said he agreed with the sentiment that "the President would not in fact have gone to war if he had known what seems to be the case, that Saddam did not have functioning weapons programs at the time."

At the same time, Kristol too, argued that the decision to invade was ultimately correct, asserting that with Hussein still in power, radical groups would be more empowered, and radicalism would be resurgent far more than it is today.

Neo-cons trying to climb onto the progressive wave by lying about their past actions shouldn't even bother. We remember the repeated visits by Cheney to Foggy Bottom to force CIA to produce "evidence" of WMDs when there was none. Finally, besides incessantly braying about WMDs on the talk shows and Fox they found their "smoking gun" in the forged yellowcake letter they got from Britain and outed Valerie Plame when Joe Wilson called BS.

Rove (who has a head shaped like a potato) is a chronic liar.
Is that a surprise? In case you need proof: Look at the corruption that has followed him and tainted this creep for 40+ years: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Rove

...What might be true is that he would have advised (the fools blinded by hubris and emboldened by America's military might) against invading Iraq if he had accuaretly calculated just how incompetently executed and politically poisonous the Iraq adventure was going to be to their (wholly Anti-American) dream of single-party dominance.

Hindsight is always 20/20, especially in a rose colored rear-view mirror.

SOMEBODY TELL ROVE TO GO HOME

Whatever he has to say is irrelevant and most likely lies. The Iraq war was Bush's intention before he became president. The fact that there was NO PLAN and it all blew up in ther faces and ours still can't be explained away by the "intelligence" nonsense. The reasons for invading Iraq were manufactured lies. No matter how often they try to make their case nothing will change. Bush is not "sorry". He doesn't know what that means, neither does Rove. I do believe that they are both getting scared. People are demanding justice and we might just get some. On Jan. 21,2009 Bush will still have Secret Service proection, but not to the extent that he does now. Rove will have to find his own hiding place. The friends and loyal supporters will be gone and writing their books and giving interviews. Rove's attempt at humility or whatever it is ought to be ignored. He wants to stay on the inside an be protected. He'll sweep the floors if it's offered to him. It's safer then being out there with the rest of us. This should be interesting. Thanks, ANNA

Lies, Lies and More Lies...

The only thing we can count on from the Bush Junta, including Karl Rove, is that they will lie to us at every opportunity.

This statement by Rove only points to the gigantic flaw in the "Bush Doctrine" and the rationale for why we went into Iraq. Pre-emptive War, without intelligence analysis, is a complete nightmare. Which is why so many of us saw the folly of going forward in haste, when so many of us called to hold off on attacking Iraq until there was PROOF. I remember being sick to my stomach, believing there were no WMDs, as I watched the "Shock and Awe" bombing and killing unfold before my eyes. How many lives, both Iraqi and other, could have been spared had they simply listened to the analysis of the intelligence!

This is a dark stain on our country, and it can be laid squarely at the feet of the Current Occupant of the White House and all his Minions, Karl Rove being right up there at the top.

Keep on lying, Karl, but know that we don't believe you! At all!

The Bushies are blatantly trying to cover their asses now and are lying through their teeth about supposed hypothetical scenarios. Unfortunately, these were not hypotheticals. The "intelligence" was not as cut and dry as they claimed (or as they are now claiming). This was obvious to many people at the time, and should remain obvious until the end of time. They are, for some strange reason, concerned about their collective legacy, one which cannot be salvaged anymore. (Even if Iraq bounces back to a success story, Obama will gain the lion share of the credit, probably rightly so.)

It's pretty clear why they're doing this now, but anyone who doesn't think they're lying through their teeth is a blind sheep.

Downing Street Memo

The memo recorded the head of MI6 as expressing the view following his recent visit to Washington that "Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."

Rove seems to have conveniently "forgotten" that the Bush administration forced the weapons inspectors out of Iraq; they were not finding the weapons that Bush and company believed were there, and this administration has consistently valued belief over evidence or fact.

The main theme of the Bush administration has been a lack of intelligence IN the white house.

This was said about 1 year before the invasion as Bush ducked his head into a meeting with Condi Rice and a few senior senators. It was reported in Newsweek.

Bush then publicly kept saying he was looking for a peaceful solution yet clearly he was unwilling to except any response from Iraq other than Saddam leaving office.

We had no direct physical evidence of an active WMD program and Rove knows it.

Rove is a pathological liar. I wonder if he actually believes the lies he tells.

until every lie that can possibly be told is somewhere recorded. Then, when they're lying to save their sorry lying asses in a court of law, they won't have to think up any new lies. Their defense will simply be references to whichever sequence of lies among those already told, that will best create the lying story their lawyers recommend.

Also, Karl Rove (whose head indeed looks like a potato) composes his sentences as if HE were the decider back then.

There is nothing remarkable about Rove's comment. It is simply the beginning of the cynical attempt to rewrite history before our very eyes. In not so many words, George Bush told Charlie Gibson he blames the war on the CIA (I guess he forgot he gave the Medal of Freedom to Tenet), and Rove's comment is meant to support that. Now we will have a president who was victimized by the intelligence community. We cannot let that happen. Every time anyone, anyone says or writes a lie about what went on during the administration to whitewash the disaster we know it to have been, we MUST speak out and set the record straight. It was difficult enough living through these years. We cannot let them spew their propaganda to improve Bush's dismal record and create a better legacy.

If we had a penny for every lie Karl Rove has told about Iraq, it would bail out the entire economy! Rove and Cheney, the real President for the last eight years, knew there were no weapons of mass destruction. The National Intelligence Estimate of October 2002 proved that when all 13 intelligence agencies stated that Iraq did not have any WMDs. The lied and knew at the time they were lying and they falsified the report they sent to Congress to have the war approved.

What will the Democrats use now for their foreigned reluctance to fully finance the hoax "war on terror" now that they are taking the Whitehouse? They know of the proofs and forged documents created by the Bush war machine to justify the invasion on Iraq, but have done nothing at all to really prosecute the crimes committed to do the invasions or really bring these wars of power and greed to an end. They continued to fully finance the criminal genicide done in Iraq, Afghanistan and now other neighboring countries. They knew and still know that there was no legitimate reason for the invasions and continued wars and humanitarian disasters they have caused. Obama intends to continue the hoax "War on Terror" and has surrounded himself with other greedy hawks. Rove belongs in prison, but likewise, so do the democrat hypocrits. The pretend to investigate the crimes of the Bush regime with their committees but do nothing at all to stop the ongoing criminal wars and trampling of our Constitution, or even to conduct a meaningful investigation into what really happened in the demolition of the WTC on September 11, 2001 that has now been proven to be a well planed explosive ordinance demolition, rather than by the airliners that were arranged to crash into the buildings. We know what Rove is, by simply reversing words he says, but the hypocritical democrats will again be in full light where there is no one else handy to blame for their greed for power and wealth through manipulations of the truth. Stop the evil US wars on the Middle East! Impeach Bush and Cheney and prosecute them for their crimes against humanity and against our Constitution and get out of that far off land belongs to the People of the Middle East. The silly excuse of bringing the war to a favorable end is a counter productive dream that can not be accomplished better than by simply bringing all of our people of war home.
