Republicans Turn to Dirty Tactics in Georgia

Of all the issues Republicans could have picked, this has to be the most offensive.

The polls must be pretty close in Georgia's runoff election for the U.S. Senate, because the right, true to form, is aiming pretty low.

Over the last few days, both the National Republican Senatorial Committee and a far-right group called Freedom's Watch have both launched ads attacking Democrat Jim Martin for being "soft on crime." More specifically, the conservatives insist that Martin has opposed measures that would crack down on criminals who prey on children.

Of all the issues Republicans could have picked, this has to be the most offensive -- Martin's daughter was kidnapped when she was just eight years old. She was, fortunately, returned to the family safely, but Martin has a more personal background when it comes to crimes against children than most of us would even care to imagine.

With that in mind, the Martin campaign released this ad and a fact-sheet documenting Martin's extensive record on penalties for criminals and protections for children.

One wonders if, perhaps, the right-wing attacks on this go a little too far, and might backfire, just as the Liddy Dole "godless" ad had the opposite of the desired effect in North Carolina earlier this month.

Then again, there is a track record to consider. Saxby Chambliss won a first term with an offensive ad smearing Max Cleland on national security; perhaps he'll win a second term thanks to a couple of offensive ads about crime.

Digg!

A progressive station on SIRIUS played an ad against Al Franken--a "kitchen sink" ad--that accused him of making fun of the disabled, hating women, associating with child molesters, and generally having horns growing out his head.

Desperation, pure and simple. Just before you kiss your ass goodbye, go for "if the shit sticks, wear it" ad campaign.

I'm glad to see that sinking feeling coming out of Georgia, too. It's the hallmark of losers everywhere. B'BYE, GUYS!

Richly Ironic

The irony is unbelievable; a disabled war veteran is called unpatriotic, a draft dodging Air National Guard deserter brands a decorated war hero a sham, a Sunday School teacher is called godless, Obama is criticized by the same people for the church he attended and accused of being a Muslim, and now a man whose family has known crime against children firsthand is accused of being soft on perpetrators.

One would think that the far-right's habitual liars, wolf-criers, criminal coddlers and shameless hypocrites would finally lose credibility.

Closet racists and latent prejudicial people need a place to vent their hate and still be accepted in "normal" society.

It appears that the Machiavellian principles live on. (The End Justifies The Means)

Hate and fear die hard.

As you all know, when a Pomeranian dog is allowed to move into the neighbourhood, the value of all property goes down, your children will be eaten by rabid roaming packs of fluffy poms and your mail will be read before it is dropped into your mailbox. I know it is true! I read it on the internet and saw a whole 30 second spot on it on YouTube and had it confirmed with a flyer from the AntiPom League of 'Merica.

So all bets are off in regards to any other pervs that are out there.

FEAR - False Evidence Appearing Real - lives and breeds in "Merica.

Hate is a sickness for which there is no real cure. Making it a crime does not cure it. It just makes it hide.

...that the American (Georgian) Public is waking up to these kinds of tactics and that the Republican strategy will backfire. It's WAY overdue!

I think that as long as the candidate is educating the public about the truth of the matter, they will use good judgement and vote accordingly! As I said, "One can only hope!!"

Hold it! Wait just a minute! As I read the comments I am shocked. You’re criticizing the party of “family values.” They are also Christians. Never forget G W Bush has had God speak to him directly. Those who may be opposed to violence remember God told his anointed one George to invade Iraq and kill those many thousands. Add to this the fact that over 50 million morons voted for McSame and that woman. I detect a conflict here. What could go wrong?
Actually the last 8 years has enlightened me greatly. I always wondered how during our uncivil war families could be so divided as to pit brother against brother with loyalties for both north and south. What I have come to understand is it can be so. I no longer talk to my only sibling, my brother or his beyond belief mindless wife. He said many years ago“ I always vote a straight republican ticket” before it became so clear the rethugnicans were just solid criminals, bigots, seized by greed, lack of compassion and a love of war and torture, he still votes a straight republican ticket. That is strange as he is not rich, just a regular hard working guy. As I tried to make clear how the run up to the war was just a bunch of lies my sister-in-law said “go get em guys.” When I began to protest the war, a civic duty in my mind, I was told I was a traitor and told I should leave the country; the old love it or leave shit. As I later pleaded with them how wrong it was for America to torture and hold people w/o real evidence and not charge them she said, “it’s ok if they do first.” That did it for me. I no longer speak with them. The vibes are bad. I may be wrong by my action; I used to like my brother, yet in my mind these issues go the deepest values.
We got our first real snowfall this morning. It looks very pretty. It helps moderate my anger.
I feel a bit peaceful.

It is somewhat disquieting to read thes previous posts and to see how family members can be on such different wave lengths. My entire nuclear family are "Born Again Christians" and vote on and care only about the "abortion" issue. They watch only Fox News and The 700 Club, except for Sunday mornings when the Crystal Palace has them mesmerized. I have stayed at a distance, the oldest of nine children and followed a liberal philosophy. It pains me to attempt any type of communication at family events...it always comes to total disagreement and an overwhelming attempt to evangelize me...uncomfortable at best. I regard their collective message as uninformed, bigoted, anti science and unmovable dogma that works against their own best interests. You cannot overcome ignorance with logic, that is my experience. I wish I could be close to my brothers and sisters and Father, but there is, after many years, no concievable way. Religion is the great enemy of intelligent inquiry.

If I didn't know better from living there I would wonder if we hadn't better have just let the "south" go, fortified the border and selectively loosened the immigration requirements

Isn't it about time to "take off the gloves" and deal with the republicans on their own terms? I believe it can be done without straying into the philosophical sludge basin they live in. Just bottle them up in there and poster the site with truthful explanations of what they are and what they represent and the future they augur. I believe lots would climb out and join the rebooting of America. Truth is a powerful mental disinfectant. Prosecute those who can be shown to deserve it including deporting the worst off to the Hague— apparently under the currently operative justice system we can do that. I realize that the battle that is just begun in America is between the proudly ignorant and the lesser, reasoning minority—those who have had just enough education and experience (especially those old enough to remember seeing this fascist poopspeak before) to keep their noses above the sociologic malignancy of corpseporate media and profitganda. Those of us who know how to work in the swamp and come home at night clean realize that in order to drain swamp you may have to dispose of some alligators. Friends, the water is rising—the vacations over. Read Naomi Klines SHOCK DOCTRINE and Naomi Wolfe's THE END OF AMERICA . . . now if you haven't yet or you want (need?) more understanding of the political climate change.

Thankfully, not all of the south is fooled. I remember when Jerry KILgore, then Republican gubenatorial candidate for governor of VA, tried to use abortion, guns, school prayer, and even the death penalty attacks against Kaine only to hopelessly watch them dwindle in value and even backfire. The worst attack was smearing Kaine with a false accusation that he would support a moratorium on the death penalty even on a former Nazi officer. That backfired big time.

And just this year, Paling tried to divide Virginia by calling all regions of the state except Northern VA the "real Virginia". It backfired big time in Northern VA and even in Hampton Roads a lot of us took offense to that kind of division especially since people travel back and forth between Hampton Roads and Northern VA for business and personal purposes.

If Obama could pull 47% in GA, I don't see how Chambliss can't be beaten as he's nothing but a useless GOP rubberstamp hack just like George Allen and Liddy Dole who got their asses kicked out in 2006 and 2008 for being just that.

of all of the really dirty negative campaigning. Which, of course, leads you to a simple truth. They are not moderates.

Their silence tells you that they are not your friends. They do not deserve the bi-partisanship that they tell you that they deserve. Saxby Chambliss did do awful. He really does need to be properly rewarded. He like the rest of the republican herd will do anything to win.

Saxby Chambliss is the most vile of politicians. Any man who would attack a war hero, a triple amputee,( Max Cleland) and compare him to Saddam, should be removed from the senate by the good people of Georgia. What Chambliss did is shameless and unforgivable.

OK, maybe there's some internal polling that indicates an Obama appearance would hurt Martin more than it would help him. Absent that, however, where is BO? Did the 50-state strategy die on 11/4? Chambliss deserves a buttkicking more than almost any GOPer I can think of. He's the poster boy for exactly the sort of politics BO decried. So - again, unless they have tactical reasons to stay away - IMO, O & Joe both ought to be busting hump in Ga. Plenty of time later for looking Presidential & bipartisan and all that. Martin's a good guy, Chambliss is a swine, & we've got a chance at a fairly dependable Dem vote in the Senate for 6 years. Spend some of that "capital", sez I. Good grief, even HRC's at least doing an out-of-state fundraiser!
