Leahy First Democratic Senator to Go On Record Against Lieberman

Since the election, Senate Democrats have been reluctant to punish Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) for the ad hominem attacks he levied at Barack Obama while supporting Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in the election. While a few senators have said that they'd like to see Lieberman apologize, most have said that they'd like him to continue caucusing with Democrats.

Today, Daily Kos diarist terjeanderson caught an interview on Vermont Public Radio with Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT), during which the senator broke from the pack and said that Lieberman deserved to lose his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee:

I'm one who does not feel that somebody should be rewarded with a major chairmanship after doing what he did. ... I felt that some of the attacks that he was involved in against Sen. Obama, whom I did support -- I was one of the first in the Congress to support him -- I thought they went way beyond the pale. I thought that they were not fair. I thought they were not legitimate. I thought that they perpetuated some of these horrible myths that were being run about Sen. Obama.

I would feel that, had I done something similar, I would not be chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee in the next Congress.

Listen here:

A new Research 2000/DailyKos poll shows that Lieberman is increasingly unpopular among his constituents. Sixty-one percent disapprove of his Senate performance. Among his Democratic constituents, Lieberman's approval rating stands at just 22 percent.

Check out ThinkProgress's new report, "Joe Lieberman: The Progressive Who Lost His Way."

Update: Roll Call reports: "A group of four Democratic Senators have been exploring ways in which Lieberman could keep his Homeland Security chairmanship, including stripping him of some other positions such as his subcommittee chairmanships on the Environment and Public Works Committee or Armed Services panel. But so far, sources said, the four lawmakers have not been able to develop a consensus."

Strip him of his Homeland Security Chair and let's move on...

There are numerous reasons to strip Lieberman of his chair among them:
* He's done a lousy job
* The Homeland Security Dept. is corrupt, bloated and needs an 'America First' Chairperson
* Lieberman is a Republican and closet neocon
* Lieberman is no friend to BHO and will resist whatever Progressive and necessary reforms that emerge from the Executive Branch

The Dem Braintrust needs to focus on the Economy, Education, scaling back the vast US War Machine, and diplomacy. Ol' Joe is a distraction from those missions and needs to become a mere footnote as he takes his rightful position on the dustbin of history...
Let's move on...

You saw Lieberman's mug over John McCain's shoulder more than you saw Cindy's. Hell, if I were your average Republican I'd be sleazed out by now at this guy's constant hanging on with his phantom hand out, hoping for his just reward.

Tsk, tsk, Joe. No VEEP slot this time out. Backed the wrong horsie.

No man can serve two masters, just like the 200 highly placed dual Isreali/US citizens should not be allowed in our government. YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE SIDES PEOPLE! Having the head of DHS (Chertoff) with dual citizenship, and Lieberman responsible for oversight is a recipe for disasterous consequences.

Lieberman can't honestly expect to come running back into the fold of the winning team after being a turncoat. How can anyone who doesn't even understand the meaning of the words loyalty & integrity ever be trusted?

Thankyou Patrick Leahy for standing up for America(ns).

Patrick Leahy! Your stand on this issue should be followed by every Democrat worthy of the name in the Senate. Liebermann has gone way overboard in his insults to President-elect Obama and if he has a shred of dignity left, should resign from the Senate.

At Least LIEberman's an 'Independent' What about Hillary???

Come On folks Hillary's campaign set up everything the McCain camp needed to perpetuate lies and propaganda about Sen Obama.
What should be done with her..Certianly NOT Sec of State, she's as much a Warmongering Corp whore as McCain!
What does Hillary & LIEberman have in common...Both memebers of the Clintons DLC. Have no doubt there is a war about to be waged in the Dem party too. Real Dems vs the Covert Neo cons of the DLC.
Sen Obama was not only defending himself against Repugs, he was defending himself against the Clinton Organized Crime syndicate called the DLC. these SOB's have been selling out average Americans as much as the Neo Cons..they work for the Same Bosses.
Hillary would Pre emptively strike Iran- for NO REASON! Funny that is exactly the scenario LIEbermans buddy Hagee invisions.
What is Hillary's 'Religious' Affiliation by the Way...I Never heard a Good answer on what kind of doctrine guides Her actions....Could she also be one of Hagee's Pets? Or at least an End of Dayer who feels her achievements were Divinely granted and thus she is Entitled where the rest of US are fucked because we were not as 'Blessed'.
LIEberamns an Independent he owes the Dems nothing and WE owe Him Nothing- strip him of everything. But Hillary claims to be a Dem, WE own her and she has some 'splaining' to do about her conduct in the Senate and during that abomination called a Pres campaign. She should be at least kicked off the Armed Services- since she failed miserably in Oversight.and I certainly DON'T want her in this Next Adminstration!

Dump him. He's no longer relevant to Democrats

He doesn't deserve to stay in his post or be allowed to participate in the Dem caucuses. If he wants to be a "Republicrat" cut him loose.

As for the comment from Purple Girl about Hilary - the question here wasn't about her. It's about Joe and his allegiances. Hilary will have plenty of opportunity to show her true colors. I think it would be a mistake (for her) to take the Sec. of State job. Stay in the Senate.

If Judas were to give back the 30 pieces of silver should we say, "Welcome back! We missed you!" I don't think so.

as a long time friend, without the fear mongering lying attacks on Obama, I'd say let it go. BUT instead, he repeated all the dirt he could think of that McCain and Palin were spouting. He BELIEVES the things that were said and the vicious ads and the questioning Obama's birth place, his patriotism and everything else were fair game. If he is allowed to go on in the role he's in he will do all he can to undermine Obama's authority at every step. He's shown his true colors now let him pay the price.

-- and don't let it hit you in the a** as you leave.... I emailed every senator of the democratic party steering committee asking them to strip Lieberman of the chairmanship. Maybe they could all use a little feedback to come to the right decision. Stevens, of AK, is going to lose. I'm pretty sure Al Franken will win MN. Maybe we'll get rid of Chambliss. So, who needs Lieberman? If the Democrats have enough discipline to get all of them to vote together (and that's a huge if) to kill a filibuster, then they can probably convince one or two sane Republicans (are there that many?) to go along. I'd say that's a more likely scenario than that Lieberman will be a reliable vote on the Dem's side on any given day on any given issue.

As long as there's a rethug governor in Conneticut. If a Democrat was there to name a new senator the turncoat would be gone so fast it'd make his head spin.
