Excellent Maddow Piece Spells Out Why Lieberman Must Be Stripped of His Chairmanship

Posted by David Sirota, Open Left at 11:15 AM on November 14, 2008.

Maddow took all the arguments against Joe and summed them up in a really great piece last night.

Many in the blogosphere, including OpenLeft (here and here), have noted that the removal of Joe Lieberman from his committee post isn't about revenge -- it's about political pragmatism. In specific, it's about making sure a guy who has repeatedly displayed his deep personal and irrational hatred for Barack Obama doesn't have the subpoena power to embark on witch hunts against President Obama. MSNBC's Rachel Maddow last night took all of those arguments and summed them up in a really great piece:

So, to reiterate -- removing Lieberman is not about revenge, it's about helping make sure the next administration doesn't have to spend all it's time fending off a crazed McCarthyist with subpoena power.

UPDATE: Maddow's final point is really important -- it's a point I made earlier: This idea that Democrats can just strip him of his chairmanship the moment he gets on his first witch hunt is absurd. Once he's down that road, he becomes almost impossible to control, because he will be portrayed as the Honest Crusader, and Democratic efforts to restrain him will be likened to Richard Nixon's "midnight massacre" where he fired Archibald Cox. It will, in short, create a martyr more powerful than even a Chairman Lieberman.

Trying to hold onto Joe L. to get the 60 votes is a delusion.

He is a dem in name only. At the very least he deserves to lose his chairmanship.

For the dems to be afraid to boot Joe down is another good example of them being wimps.

Kick his ass from here to Timbucktoo.

He isn't a 60th vote, given his romance and delusion as a pseudo--Republican. Give him a small chair and let it go.

He lost his primary to his democratic rival and not willing to accept the loss, ran as Independent. Now has switched to Rep supporter, but still wants to be rewarded with Democratic committee "leadership"? This is a man who is not loyal to EITHER SIDE except when convenient. He will cut anybodies THROAT to enrich himself. Get RID of HIM.

Damn sure won't be any investigations of the Bush Administration originating from Lieberman's committee should he remain Chairman. Being from New Orleans I was real happy when as Chair of the Homeland Security committee he decided NOT to investigate the criminal negligence, the fraud, and the looting (by Bush's corporate buddies)after Katrina of what once was a beautiful city on the way back. Yea, let's let bygones be bygones and not play the blame game. Unfortunately, we in New Orleans will still be living with the bygones for a long time into the future.

Of course, the same is true of so much of the Bush Administration's criminal incompetence and outright criminality. Those who lost sons, daughters, and spouses for Bush/Cheney's lies can just suck it up and blow that off in the interet of "Why can't we all just get along?"

And now, the Dems are wrenching their hands in the agony of angst and painful decision: whether or not to dump the lying, war-loving slimeball, Lieberman. If this is a crisis of confidence for the Dems, frankly I don't hold out much hope of their looking into much of anything concerning the Bush Administration.

From a pratical point of view, Clinton looked the other way concerning George H. W. Bush's crimes and all that achieved was his being harried by the Republicans for his entire time in office. He refused to investigate. They didn't. Even when there was nothing to investigate, which had the effect of impeding legislation that might have been passed.

So "let's all get along." and forget about the death and destruction, the damage to constitutional government, the contempt for law and the subversion of justice. Lets forget that the Republican Party in lockstep with the Bush Administration never forgot their agenda which they were quite willing to jam down everyone's throats, getting along be damned.

Some Additional Thoughts-Part One

My most significant reason for wanting Joe Lieberman Gone with a capital "G," is that he is morally bankrupt, well beyond the congressional average on this score. I realize that doesn't mean much in today's politics of smoke and mirrors, the politics of calculation of the meanest kind, but, I have grown very weary of this. What disturbs me most about Lieberman is that his entire modus operandi is based primarily on what is good for him. I am convinced he supported McCain, partly because he was far more in sync with McCain's stand on the Iraq Occupation (One Hundred Years), but, more importantly, because he thought McCain would offer him the VP spot on the ticket. If Lieberman is more compatible with McCain's war policies, tax policies, non-health care policies, Israel policies-if anything he is more strident than McCain on Iraq-then he needs to join the "other" party. I am as sure as anyone who can't really be sure at all, being removed by so many degrees of separation (I acknowledge the immense speculation of this), that one of the reasons he came simpering back to the Democrats is that he felt bushwhacked (no pun intended) by the McCain campaign's selection of Sarah Palin. That and the Committee Chairmanship,( i.e., power within the Democratic Party that after his recent repugnant behavior in the Presidential campaign he must not have). After all, he had publicly sacrificed the minute amount of integrity he still had and his reward was someone possibly more despicable than himself had gotten his presumed reward for no sacrifice at all.

He doesn't just want to return to the environs of the Democratic caucus. He essentially gave Reid an ultimatum. Allow him to keep his chair of the Homeland Security Committee or he would move across to the aisle to the Republicans. Some might say this is just typical political hardball. I say this is the conduct of an arrogant, disgusting and dishonorable swine.

As far as the concept of forgiveness promoting a more bipartisan approach to government, I agree this is a sound approach if taken with the utmost caution. However, ditching Lieberman, who is not a Republican, should not disrupt an initial offering of inclusion and bipartisanship to the Republicans, the sane ones, anyway.

The Democrats in part because of their weakness in the past have morally and politically compromised themselves quite a great deal. My feeling is that this has hurt them in the eyes of the citizenry and has just about everything to do with their low job approval ratings. I think it is time to put up or shut up from this bunch-with a few exceptions, of course-show some backbone, and actually work at doing what they are supposed to believe. I suspect that the reason Obama triumphed over Hillary Clinton is that the perception of Obama was that he really believed what he was saying, whereas with the DC cultured Clinton it was the same old triangulation going on that occurred during Bill Clinton's Administration. And it was. Whether Obama was sincere we will all find out soon enough.

Some Additional Thoughts-Part Two
Posted by: blackie4aces on Nov 15, 2008 3:48 PM

(Continued)

Two principle reasons I have for wanting Lieberman relieved certainly of the committee chair, and even set out to the lonely sea that he undeniably richly deserves with not even the caucus within his possibility, are his positions on the war and on Israel, not to mention his nearly insane rantings and calls to war with Iran. I realize this does not put him at odds with an unfortunately substantial number of Democrats with the exception of Iran, but he is not a Democrat and that does provide him more leeway to create problems and less leverage to pressure him on critical, controversial votes.

From the tactical point of view it appears that the Dems will not get the 60 votes they need even with Lieberman. They are currently-last I heard-at 57 with Lieberman. Of the three states still in the mix they would have to win all three. I feel that is unlikely. Martin may have a shot against Chambliss in Georgia. There seems to be no way to predict what will happen in Minnesota between Coleman and Franken according those who know much more than I do about these things, and I think Alaska is a definite Republican seat. Who's going to ultimately sit in it is anybody's guess, but it will be Republican. How much tougher can it be to convince two Republicans to crossover instead of just one? My hope would be that an argument good enough to get one ought to be able to get two and the integrity involved in getting rid of slimy old Joe pays dividends that are not measurable, but have to count for something.

This piece of shit was also extremely lonely and was never asked to be on a team.

I'd say we all knew some little bastard like this is school.
