Scary: The Far-Right's Crazy Attacks on Obama Are Just Getting Started

What doesn't kill the far-right only makes them crazier.

For the last eight years, we've observed Karl Rove's non-reality based universe in which logic was entirely abandoned in lieu of whatever reality the administration invented in order to serve its ridiculous policies and to mask its glaring nincompoopery. Intellectually dishonest at best -- destructive and criminal at worst.

This didn't end on Election Day.

Since their thumpin' last week, the far-right has pushed the crazy to eleven and snapped the knob clean off -- an opening salvo of twisted hackery portending an insane four-to-eight years of attacks on the Obama administration. If the last seven days have been any indication, the far-right is shaping up to make the 1990s seem quaint -- even erudite by comparison. That which used to be your basic, off-the-shelf intellectual dishonesty has grown into, as Digby pointed out recently, full-on intellectual violence.

Intellectual violence. While not a new term, it perfectly defines what we're seeing now: accusations and smears that so severely confound logic they literally attack -- violate -- reality and the human intellect. It's like a berzerker dervish of argumentative elbows and fists indiscriminately flailing around, thwacking anything in its orbit, so much so that constructing a counterpoint is literally painful, "Why the hell am I trying to debunk this?! Ow! My head. Aw hell, I need a drink."

The "Impeach Obama" Facebook groups, for example. No, I'm not making that up. They're real and there's a constant variety of disgruntled far-right Republicans joining up every day. And, to our total lack of surprise, they're not ashamed in the slightest to post comments like this one:

"Damn dems stole the election like they always do. GOD wanted McCain and Palin in the White House. That's why it's called THE WHITE HOUSE."

Apart from being a racist, this "Impeach Obama" Facebook member is clearly the most awesome pollster in the world if he was able to sample God. I tried to submit a friend request just so I could ask him if he perchance enlisted a room of undecided cherubim for a Frank Luntz dial group.

Shortly after discovering this, I was talking with a colleague and found myself instinctively trying to form a rational argument about why the Facebook members were wrong. It began with the obvious: "He's not even the president yet!" And then, after I segued into Article II and the constitutional grounds for impeachment, I stopped myself. What in name of Randall P. MacMurphy am I doing? Arguing against this crap is like explaining to a meth tweaker that the shadow people aren't real. That's when I decided that it'd be more fun to just infiltrate one of the groups and post comments like, "The moon landing was staged!" and, "Obama is a bionic -- just like his half-aunt! I have proof!"

Then on Monday, Michelle Malkin posted an item in which she referred to the president-elect as the "overlord-elect." And on Tuesday, Congressman Paul Broun told the AP, "You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I'm not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I'm saying is there is the potential." Uh-huh. On the scale of probability, "Obama is a fascist dictator" is about as likely as "Broun is a Jedi Master." But it doesn't matter. Reality is irrelevant.

The obvious intention here is to cobble together an abuse of power meme against President-elect Obama, despite President Bush and Vice President Cheney having, you know, spent the last eight years consolidating executive power, authorizing torture, suspending habeas corpus, illegally invading sovereign nations, ignoring congressional subpoenas and eavesdropping on American citizens.

Whoops. There I go again, talking about facts and treating the crazy like it's real.

But clearly the most egregious post-election trespass came to us from John Hinderaker of Powerline. Some back story: following the president-elect's lighthearted Nancy Reagan séance remark, Michelle Malkin referred to Obama as a "classless jerk" (unlike President George W. "Those Weapons Have to Be Around Here Somewhere" Bush, of course). And she treated the séance comment as if it were part of an on-going pattern of ridiculous Obama gaffes and bloopers.

Picking up on Malkin's lead, Hinderaker wrote this week:

Bush never gets sloppy when he is speaking publicly. He chooses his words with care and precision, which is why his style sometimes seems halting. In the eight years he has been President, it is remarkable how few gaffes or verbal blunders he has committed. If Obama doesn't raise his standards, he will exceed Bush's total before he is inaugurated.

No, seriously. I didn't make that up. A popular member of the far-right intertubes actually wrote that. On a public website. That people go to and read. Every day.

Come on now. Fess up, Hinderaker, you can't seriously believe all that. I mean, I didn't think it was possible, but you succeeded in making Malkin's "classless jerk" remarks appear respectable -- even reasonable -- by comparison. Fact: not only is the president-elect one of the finest orators in modern political history, but he far exceeds President Bush in terms of intellectualism and verbal discipline. In other words, a Bush gaffe reveals an inherent lack of intellectual curiosity and a general ineptitude when it comes to, well, talking. An Obama gaffe is an isolated incident, exclusive of his ability to speak, think and reason. Nothing more.

I can't believe I even have to write that down. But that's precisely what makes these arguments so violent. They literally crush logical reality, making it almost impossible to ignore.

In a perfect world, we probably shouldn't react or to take these things too seriously, and yet we'd be making a huge mistake to ignore them altogether -- or to underestimate their efficacy. After all, there's Drudge who somehow remains a bridge between the far-right's intellectual violence and the establishment press. As we've learned throughout the last ten years, it only takes some persistent badgering and a series of red "SHOCK!" headlines for the crazy to travel by osmosis into the mainstream.

So we're in for many more years of insanity from the far-right. They're not dead. They're not as irrelevant as they deserve to be. And they certainly don't suffer from writer's block when it comes to outlandish and illogical attacks and smears.

Put it this way, if President-elect Obama so much as takes a long weekend off this August, you can bet that the far-right will crap their cages about Obama being lazy and shiftless.

Hmm why can't this fool's omnipotent magical sky god simply snap fingers and change the outcome of the election and put the right-wingers in office?

'Great Moments in Presidential Speeches'

Well it's obvious that the fan of Bush's oration has never watched Dave Letterman. For at least the past 4 years, several times a week, Dave has been running a comic bit chronicling Bush's horrific public speaking. The show has found hundreds of different segments, each one another example of the boneheaded ridiculousness that flows from that man's mouth every time he opens it. And what about the book Bushisms, and the website that has daily new entries? This cannot be naivete or ignorance, but the willingness to lie by yet another neocon that collectively with that group has transcended anything any of us have seen in American political life for the last hundred years.

I can only end with my hero, John Lennon.

"I'm sick and tired of hearing things from neurotic psychotic pig-headed politicians.......all I want is some truth.....just gimme some truth."

Obama is not the messiah, but his refreshing blend of clarity and oratory and truth has been gratefully appreciated.

Oklahoma or Something

Can we just give these people, say, Wyoming or Oklahoma or Kentucky or something? Some place where they can all go and be stupid and be their own country. I'm fine with 49 states. Hell, we can even make Puerto Rico or American Samoa a state to make up the difference if we want. But let's give them a reservation and quietly allow them to secede. We can even rest assured that they will build their own wall to keep themselves inside.

I suspect that there is a cadre of Republicans that are mortified by the loud voices of the lunatic fringe. Unfortunately the GOP needs the ultra right religious fundamentalist vote, or they would never win another election. There just aren't enough of them left. IMHO the GOP's embrace of this particular group has been cynical and self-serving. Even though I am certain that not all Republicans are crazy, research has shown that authoritarian personalities (almost always conservative in their politics) are very adept at living in non-reality.

The Internet is a wonderful thing, very democratic, but it has provided a medium for these voices that reaches around the globe. A way needs to be found to marginalize their babble without demonizing the speaker. Afterall, they aren't, for the most part, evil, just mentally ill. And when I say mentally ill, I mean of the tinfoil hat variety. Well, the Republicans have only themselves to blame. They are responsible for the drastic cuts in funding to public health services that used to take care of the crazies. Now they are out and making trouble for everyone.

What is important to remember...

.. is that this is the very same concept the Bush admin has been using for 8 years. Say whatever you like, and someone is sure to believe it. Even if it isn't true, never admit that. More people will hear your original statement than will hear the disputation, and some won't even believe the disputation if they do hear it. Even if someone hears both and believes the disputation, they may still carry a grain of belief in the original lie or a disposition to believe other lies or gossip.

It is important to know that for many of these people actually believig what they are saying isn't really important. Malkin is one of the best at it. You must understand that their dedication is not to truth, justice, fairness, objectivity. It is to winning for their party.

Even in 1960, states like Oklahoma sounded off its Far Rightist alarms of idiotic fears about a Catholic running the country just like they did against an African American running the country. Still, I wouldn't worry about them. I'd say focus on fulfilling the promises given to the moderates and the liberals for it was they who gave Obama the keys to the White House and not the Far Right.

And give it some time. Keep them out of power long enough and in time they'll moderate themselves. Right now, they're like misbehaved hyperactive children who must be GROUNDED out of power until they can behave themselves.

The things people believe are amazing. A friend brought his brother and nephew to my last Friday night's poker game. During the course of the game, the nephew commented that he and his father had argued all the way over about the new president. The father got a look on his face that sent up red flags and started to mumble something that sounded distinctly like bigotry and nonsense. I announced that we would NOT be talking about that subject during the game. I was just sure his comments would be something nasty and stupid.

Maybe I should have been more diplomatic and asked him what his objections were, but I was caught off guard. I got the feeling that I would not like this guy, even though his brother supported Obama and is a very good friend.

If the new guy weren't such a really horrible player (I won the game and took his money - YAY!), I might not even want him to come back. I surely get tired of the whole Muslim, communist, baby-killer, pedophile, socialist, terrorist-loving crap.

I once read a story about a town where someone started killing rude people. Before long, the town was the epitome of kindness and good manners.

A large portion of US society have remained children, uneducated, snot-nosed and badly brought up ones, trapped in adult bodies. Public corporal punishment for lying sounds pretty good to me.

a vigilant national media would have a running factcheck operation to debunk this stuff and correctly source it. so that when Drudge or Malkin try to infect the national dialogue with it, we would be somewhat inoculated - sort of a truth vaccine.

But then that would require a vigilant national media...

It's time for a couple of New Political Parties like we have in Canada. Americans are so . . . . stupid. It's either one or the other . . . no in-between. So childish . . . so narrow.

I'm a first amendment absolutist, and I continue to agree with NY Times v Sullivan despite being outraged by the vicious, specious, over-the-top charges retailed by the right. Their effect is, I think, dichotomous; the leftmost third of the IQ curve, also known as the Christian Right and the Republican base, credulously swallows them and is energized and pushed to new extremes by them, while the rest of us are offended and see them as evidence of stupidity, depravity and desperation.

The kinds of people who think the universe is 6000 years old and that dinosaurs and people cohabitated on Earth are likely to think that Obama is a Marxist and an illegal alien, and those who see demons lurking everywhere and think that they, and only they, have knowledge of truth are likely to think he is a secret Muslim who wants to install a caliphate to replace the current Christian Taliban.

The real conflict isn't Christians and Jews vs. Muslims, or liberals vs. conservatives, or religious vs. secular; it is sane and rational vs. insane and irrational. The more overheated the rhetoric becomes, the more sharply delineated are those groups.

Great article, but I would argue that it is important to take these crazy arguments seriously and refute them. Over the past eight years I have seen a number of democrats and liberals, so flustered by ilogical statements from the right, that they fail to mount an affective counter argument. Without a good rebutal, the press just continues to repeat the crazy comment without serious analysis, and before you know it, the crazy talk becomes conventional wisdom. This is what the Swift Boaters did to Kerry and it probably cost him the election. So far, Obama has been very good about refuting the craziness, (when necessary), with simple, logical and powerful arguments. We should all do the same.

As a recidivistic reader of right-wing websites, I am not surprised by any of this. I have filled a notebook with posts demanding that all registered Democrats and all Democratic officeholders be rounded up in the middle of the night, incarcerated behind barbed wire, interrogated in a military tribunal, tried for treason, bayoneted, shot through the head, and thrown to hungry dogs. Barack Obama has routinely been called not only a Socialist and a Communist but the inept product of Affirmative Action, a drug dealer, a sex offender, and the Antichrist. "Expose Obama" send around the other day a photograph of Obama with a cigarette hanging out of the corner of his mouth; his complexion had been darkened about six shades and he looked sinister. Michael Savage is worse than Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Malkin is worse than Anne Coulter, and there are websites on which the entire cast of characters appears to be psychotic.

Well, sure, there are some real whack jobs out there. Heck, some of them have their own shows on Fox News. But we already know what we have. We have the White House, the Congress and we have over 66 million registered American voters who said we were just fine - no problem.

Remember this - 22 million more American adults voted for Barack Obama than voted for William Jefferson Clinton in 1990. John McCain, on the other hand, got the same number of votes that GHW Bush and Ross Perot got combined.

I like our odds this time, I really do.

Here you guys go again falling for the old polarizing right-left paradigm. If Americans can muster up the few remaining brain cells, not affected yet by mercury or fluoride, they will realize it isn't the far right or left they should be fighting and arguing over but the CONSTITUTION. Of course Michelle Malkin is paraded out to continue the mindless rhetoric that divides but whether Obama or Bush are better speakers? God please help us. Something slightly more important might be considered for all patriotic Americans. Will Barak Obama repeal "consolidating executive power, authorizing torture, suspending habeas corpus, illegally invading sovereign nations, ignoring congressional subpoenas and eavesdropping on American citizens"? Far as I can observe up till now it's a case of so far so bad and the prognosis for positive change is dismal, unless you like stormtroopers and brown shirts coming to a town or city near you.

Illogical logic from the people who brought you....

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Ya American's are all bad, your good your perfect, and Canada is of course a harmonious country of people who all get along and agree on most everything...Right....Give me a break, do you people who actually do not live here or maybe live here in sleeper cell chanting, death to all Americans, actually know anything about our government our culture other than your trivial judgmental superficial "Your Better Than Us" statements on this blog? Your time is better spent on dealing with your own cultural issues, that I am sure that you know more about than I do...Reserve your unsolicited advice for your fellow country people, you do not have the social or cultural real knowledge of America to inflict your moralistic judgments on a whole country of people who congregated together from all corners of the world ...For the first time in years I have actually felt proud of being American, when Obama won the election..It felt like a victory against evil...And isn't this what really it's all about, good vs evil when it comes down to it, and the grey in between...We are talking about a group in all cultures who historically, has always wanted to rule as Gods over the rest of us.., They have been dictators, Religious leaders, politicians, kings, from the beginning of civilization, who want total rule over others. These people are the same evil crazies who are making claims that Obama is the antichrist, etc... The comments about American's using the same ole paradigm is ethnocentric psycho babble...The paradigm has shifted big time, and you absolutely cannot reason with insane hateful people who know they are right and God is on their side..George Bush was right but he was talking about the Taliban, and not his own followers...They plot, they wait they fume they are a potential threat to us and the world, and they really need to be held in check...You cannot reason with the unreasonable, but fortunately they are the minority...These people are dedicated to their ideologies. They too are not open to dialog, they just want others to submit to their will...But for the first time in a long long time we have a president who is open to dialog and diplomacy, who is not radical and who does not want to be ruler of the world...The Bush men and company were not open to dialog to reasonable requests from over 50% of America for an end to the war, our rights to personal privacy and freedom back, and jobs for American's...And see what happens when you let radicals who will not be reasonable rule you, you end up with a fascist country...So if you are not American, you have a right to your opinion, but if your open to dialog, I suggest that you learn a lot more about America and what actually is going on here before you get on your high horse thing that we are bad you are good, Now I know everyone has individual reason for being who they are etc...but I will not tolerate evil, because when you do, then you will be part of it...For me evil is anything that will kill or harm another person to gain property or power over another, using political religious or social powers to get this power, and the intentions is not for the common good but for the good of the few...There is evil and good, and anyone who doesn't get it, is blind...Is it good for people to die from war, or starvation or rape, murder, no access to medical care, homelessness???Is it good to have an agenda that only your religion is right and everyone else who doesn't follow it, are infidel, going to hell or just wrong??? Is it good to rape the earth kill all living things, poison the food and water and earth and then make plans to nuke other countries, in the name of God or country? Dialoging about the people who think this is ok, is smart, our country needs to stand united against the twisted evil sickness that is still very alive and brewing waiting for the opening to gain momentum again...

I'm sorry to say that objectively speaking (I'm a lifelong Democrat) I watched the left wing crazies say the exact same crap about Bush both times he was elected ("Impeach Bush" before he took office)... well, the one time he was 'elected'. There's plenty of craziness to go around, fortunately the better crazies won this time.

Be careful not to verbally hit "non-combatants"

A lot of "intellectual violence" is not literally violence. This abusive talk needs to be denounced, but it should be protected by the 1st Amendment, and it is not bad enough to put it's source beyond redemption.

In a lot of other instances psychosis or mental illness is unfortunate but is NOT derogatory. So this widespread use of terms such as 'loony', 'whack job' and 'nut case' is intellectual violence that hits a lot of non-combatants (so to speak.)
