Bush Wants to Play 'Let's Make a Deal' With Obama

Barack Obama and George W. Bush met privately for 65 minutes yesterday, speaking in the Oval Office without staff. No notes were taken, and aides to both men were reluctant to share second-hand details with the media, preferring words like "friendly" and "productive."

That said, we did get a sense of what was on Obama's mind.

The struggling auto industry was thrust into the middle of a political standoff between the White House and Democrats on Monday as President-elect Barack Obama urged President Bush in a meeting at the White House to support immediate emergency aid.

Mr. Bush indicated at the meeting that he might support some aid and a broader economic stimulus package if Mr. Obama and Congressional Democrats dropped their opposition to a free-trade agreement with Colombia, a measure for which Mr. Bush has long fought, people familiar with the discussion said.

The Bush administration, which has presided over a major intervention in the financial industry, has balked at allowing the automakers to tap into the $700 billion bailout fund, despite warnings last week that General Motors might not survive the year.

Mr. Obama and Congressional Democratic leaders say the bailout law authorizes the administration to extend assistance.

Mr. Obama went into his post-election meeting with Mr. Bush on Monday primed to urge him to support emergency aid to the auto industry, advisers to Mr. Obama said. But Democrats also indicate that neither Mr. Obama nor Congressional leaders are inclined to concede the Colombia pact to Mr. Bush, and may decide to wait until Mr. Obama assumes power on Jan. 20.

NBC's Andrea Mitchell had a similar report about Obama having urged the president to consider "a stimulus package in the lame duck session, aid to the auto industry, and help for homeowners with adjustable-rate mortgages in order to prevent more foreclosures."

In other words, as far as Obama is concerned, Bush can use his remaining weeks in office productively, and as far as Bush is concerned, he'll take these issues seriously if Democrats give him the trade deal he wants.

This probably isn't going to work out as Bush would like -- lawmakers realize that an Obama White House isn't that far away.

After ruining EVERYTHING, Bush has the gall to put conditions on his help for ordinary workers!
Because what Americans really need now after he's beaten them up with a bat for 8 years is to have to compete with a country with no labor standards, where union heads and labor activists are assassinated. What a dick!

GTFO and take Barney with you!

He reminded us day before yesterday. The decider, Commander in Chief, etc. I wonder what they really discussed yesterday. Suddenly today the banks are tripping over each other working out deals with customers so they can stay in their homes. That's not George's style. Even though it does make sense. I think the new guy started early. ANNA

As if Bush hasn't done enough harm as it is, and now he wants to twist Obamba's arm and put his ass in a sling even before he takes office.
Why can't an emergency order be signed to kick Bush out, and move up the date of inauguration?
Once that is accomplished, let the first order of business be to have a special prosecutor appointed to have Bush, Bush Sr. and all their crew indited on crimes against humanity.
If Obamba is wanting to make a clean start, then he will have to make a clean sweep of the office.
Or is it going to be that once he gets behind closed doors, the real power brokers will give him his marching orders?
Going to be interesting to see just how this all shakes out, and what kind of president were really going to have.

Before your readers light about about this statement, please give the source. The Transition Team has refuted this rumor - yesterday, in fact.

If you know more, let us know.

Thought GM was owned by a German company?

I just read that a German company here in the US is laying off 9500 workers and hiring a bunch of workers from the British award winning prison system.

Gosh, if we do that too, then both countries can finally compete with China.... slave labor for all globally. How nice. Now we know what this "globalization is really all about". I have asked for the link and will provide it as soon as I get it.

But if all of this is true, then screw them. No bail out until they rehire the same number of Americans as they are hiring of slave labor workers out of that British prison system, only at a living wage. No way should we cooperate with where this globalization is going, no way.

In fact, after reading that about the German company, I begin to remember about the KRB contract for $385 million dollars they bragged about on their website for building 11 new internment camps and refurbishing the old military bases into camps.... so I guess now we know why!

WEll, we asked for it. We don't research or find out what is factual before we cast our votes.... thats how we got Bush... Heck his history as gov of texas was clear and a good indication of the corruption that would be going with him to the White HOuse.

Gee, just love the fact that Bush, even when faced with the failure of the second biggest automaker on the planet, and with 2.4 MILLION jobs on the line, will attempt extortion to get his way on his idiotc ideology.

Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Bush stamps his feet while America circles the drain. We cannot be rid of this petulant child-man soon enough.

According to Valerie Jarrett, interviewed on CNN this evening, Obama will bring a different style of taking care of business to the White House. Earlier Wolf Blitzer had interviewed Sarah Palin who, babbling effusively, saying she'd be happy to meet with Obama and to "help" him through his transition period. Later when Jarrett was asked if Obama would be willing to meet with Palin, she didn't miss a beat and said that Obama would and that he would think to do otherwise would be a distraction.

Are we about to experience a new era of civility from a new kind of president? It may be that Obama will talk to many people with many different points of view, listen thoughtfully and respectfully then proceed, as he should, to do things according to his own best judgement.
