Bush Disapproval Ratings Reach All Time High

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 4:37 PM on November 10, 2008.

Bush is now more unpopular than Nixon was when he resigned from office during Watergate. By a lot.

In general, I don't report much on the George W. Bush's approval ratings, in part because they've become rather predictable. "He's very unpopular," I can hear you saying. "We get it."

But when the president reaches certain milestones in unpopularity, it's probably worth making note of it.

As President-elect Obama visits the White House, a new national poll suggests that the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is the most unpopular president in the six decades since presidential approval ratings were first measured.

Seventy-six percent of those questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday disapprove of how George W. Bush is handling his job as President. That's an all-time high in CNN polling, or in Gallup polling dating back to World War II.

"No other president's disapproval rating has gone higher than 70 percent. Bush has managed to do that three times so far this year," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "That means that Bush is now more unpopular than Richard Nixon was when he resigned from office during Watergate with a 66 percent disapproval rating."

In fact, the Nixon comparison is illustrative in its severity. Nixon, exposed as a criminal and in the midst of becoming the only president to ever resign from office in disgrace, was 10 points more popular than Bush is now. (CNN released a handy chart on the subject.)

And speaking of presidents and polls, the latest Gallup poll shows Barack Obama with a 68% "favorable rating," which is up six points from the last poll conducted before the election. This isn't quite the same this as a job-approval rating -- Obama hasn't taken office yet, obviously -- but this does make Obama one of the most popular president-elects in recent times.

It started with Nixon and the pardon heard 'round the world. The pardon that set the stage for all future republican atrocities. Who wouldn't break the law every once in a while if he knew there was no law?

It remains to be seen how it will end. The excuse that we must come together as a nation and not punish those who are responsible for genocide, et cetera is opposite the truth. National security necessitates that responsibility is affixed to those that have violated not just the law, but also the supreme law, our Constitution.

All will be for naught if someone very high up does not go to jail. In forty years we will be breathing a sigh of relief that "our gal" got elected and we will be so glad that the recent criminal administration will never happen again.

It will.

Unpopularity Is No Substitute for Justice

Better late than never, but it surely took the majority of Americans a long time to figure out how bad Bush and his co-conspirators are.

I agree that justice for the victims, regaining the respect of the civilized world, affirming the rule of law and deterring future crimes all demand thorough investigation, transparent processes, congressional hearings and the arrest and trial of those implicated in torture, forced disappearance, war crimes, unlawful spying, and other violations of human rights.

The Republicans, too, need to cooperate and support the process to regain the nation's confidence. Further connivance and obstruction of justice will only seal their doom.

There will be no Justice unless it is directly imposed by the citizens!! The entire Congress with a few exceptions should all be tried under the RICO Act where confisication acts can be imposed as well as the entire top level of of the Executive branch. All the 1000 top executives of banks, including the Federal Reserve should likewise be arrested as well as the publishers and editors of all MSN papers and T.V. companies and all charged with Treason. If guilty, all should be hanged--PUBLICALLY so that the world can see some semblance of Justice has been served.

Bush, Cheney, Paulson et al are nothing more than glorified street punks and should be handled accordingly. This punishment should be adminstired by the people directly if the arrogant asses who run this country refuse to do what history crys out for. Basta es Basta!!!

There were so many former members of Nixon's fan club in this administration it was scary. Some people never learn their lesson, and power is a powerful drug. Bad behavior is never ok, and dangerous decisions always seem to get caught.

Germany got "DeNazified"....

... at the end of WW2, conveniently blaming the NAZI party for all wrongdoings (although Hitler was just 8 years old when Germany constructed its first purpose-built Extermination camp) If they hadn't done so - found a scapegoat - they'd never have been rehabilitated. (And the world wouldn't have ignored the fact that only ONE East German has been prosecuted since 1991 for crimes non unlike those of the Nazis.)

Obama is supposed to restore "America's place in the world". With Bush and his crew walking the streets as free men, that's just NOT going to happen. America has too long a history of easy self-forgiveness. You can't realistically claim to "lead the free world" with unfinished business like this on the books.

at only 24% is ok but not great. It should be 2-3%, allowing for only the psychos and crazies among us. But we have an oversupply of idiots, morons, imbeciles, greedy CEO's, faith-soaked ignoramuses, and other Refucklican snotbags who think he's perfectly OK. No insults intended, of course.

Bush was the wall in his way. Hopefully the memories of him will keep a democrat in the white house for many years to come.
