Will Obama Bring "Only Technical" Changes to Iraq?

Posted by Raed Jarrar, Raed in the Middle at 8:37 AM on November 7, 2008.

It's time to take a sober look at President-elect Barack Obama's Plans for Iraq.

I didn't find this in the English media, but Arab media (including Al-Jazeera) reported today:

Iraqi Presidency Council said in its first reaction to Barack Obama winning the U.S. presidential election: there is only one U.S. policy in Iraq, and the changes that may occur during Obama's time "would be only technical."
As you've heard already, Obama picked congressman Rahm Emanuel to become the White House's chief of staff. Mr. Emanuel, an Israeli citizen who has served in the Israeli Army (he denies both), was the only one out of Illinois' nine congressmen who voted for the invasion of Iraq in 2002.

I know that the confetti has not settled down yet, but I think it's time already to ask the Obama-Biden campaign some questions about their foreign policy plans, especially regarding the U.S. role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and regarding ending the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

I did not vote for Obama or donate to his campaign, but I'll send him a couple of questions anyway. For those of you who have donated your money or time to support Obama, or have voted for him, I think it's your personal responsibility to contact him. You can send your questions to the campaign by clicking here.

Here is the question I've sent:

Dear President-elect Obama

I am writing to congratulate you for your landslide victory yesterday.

I am very concerned about the Iraqi government's announcement today that your administrations' policy in Iraq will continue to be the same one adopted by the Bush administration, and that any changes that may occur during your time "would be only technical."

Do you agree with this statement, or are you still committed to ending the U.S. occupation like you have promised during the campaign?

Thank you.

According to Wikkipedia, Rahm Emanuel once held a dual US-Israeli citizenship, as his father was born in Israel, but gave it up at age 18. He also volunteered to the IDF as a civilian worker during the '91 Gulf War. If you'd lie about something as checkable as this, what else would you lie about? I've heard you on Democracy Now and others shows, and you seemed credible then, so knock off the hysterical bullshit, and let's see what happens, once Obama's presidency actually starts. Expect a lot of Clinton retreads at first, though; gotta start somewhere. Don't worry, it won't ruin your career as a pundit if you actually sound hopeful for a change.

I understand that most liberals would love to just up and leave at the wiggle of a nose, but the honest truth is that foreign forces MUST remain to help rebuild what they destroyed. That is the way war has always, and always will work. Although they don't always do the best job (the reconstruction comes to mind) they HAVE to do SOMETHING. you can't just leave people with nowhere to sleep, no clean water and... well you get the point. That is what non-combat forces means. While I personally believe that the nation should invest in UN peacekeepers, UNICEF, Peace Corps, and similar organizations, I guess that IS what we pay all these taxes for....

I also think that it is a little too presumptive to say that Obama intends to expand the war in pakistan. I know after 7 long and painful years it can be hard (especially since you don't live in America)to remember that the whole point of this fiasco has been to find Bin Laden, you know, that guy who orchestrated the deaths of THOUSANDS of Americans for NO DAMN REASON! If Obama wants to continue to pursue this TRUE terrorist (not like the ones he "cohorts" with)well, I guess that's just him being "pro-american"

On Friday night Obama's official transition website change.gov (no need for the www) listed all his plans with regard to the economy, the Iraq war, civil liberties, taxes, health care, everything, all in great detail. There were some very encouraging things there. It's all gone now, replaced by a brief, say nothing summary.
