Palin Spent More on Clothes than Reported, Didn't Talk with McCain Much

Posted by Ali Frick, Think Progress at 11:04 AM on November 5, 2008.

Apparently $150,000 was a low estimation.

In a new 50,000 word article on the presidential campaigns that will come out tomorrow, Newsweek reports that Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) spent far more on clothing than the $150,000 reported last month. According to a preview by Politico's Mike Allen, "McCain's top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy":

One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family -- clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent 'tens of thousands' more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband.

Newsweek reports that McCain "rarely spoke to Palin during the campaign, and aides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended."

this woman is the poster child for self-centered, egocentric action. her every move seems to scream "entitlement" even as she denies others their rights. i'd love to see her sued for reimbursement of the funds used to pay for everything except the "three suits and a stylist"!

Now she has a wardrobe for her presidential bid in 2012. The rethugs will never know the clothes are 4 years our of date, too busy thinking about her without any.

Wait 'till the news about her half-million dollar house

comes out.

Reporters are hot on the trail of the records as to who built the lake house for the Palins.

Remember the 23 mill sports complex in Wasilla?

Turns out that the same contractor who jacked up Steven's house and put a new one under it was the major supplier for the sports complex and the Palin house!

Proving who paid for what is no easy task, however, due to a dearth of records. Palin, of course, had suspending permitting and it simply may be impossible to get paper invoices. Considering that Palin and Stevens appear to be at the top of an ongoing criminal conspiracy, and that the Stevens part has unwound, it seems fairly likely that threads may be pulled in Palin's direction.

I will be watching this one closely.

Gold digger around--count your silver and linen

Add gold digger to Palin's list of virtues--illiterate, ignorant, malicious, hypocritical, pretentious, being some of them. Everywhere she stayed during the campaign better count their silver and linen. This is just typical of white trash--she's padded her expense accounts in Alaska, so what would you expect when she's on the national scene?

It is easy to focus on her outragous spending on clothes.

What I think is most revealing and scary is the statement that "...aides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended."

The absolute last thing we need in the White House is another president who is sheltered from the truth, and whose aides are afraid to be honest. I firmly believe this nation has dodged a bullet - or worse.

I'd probably keep him in the dark about the purchases too! Can you imagine the temper that he'd show if you were the lowly staffer who broke the news? OMG.

Nonetheless, we shouldn't be too suprised, it appears that Alaska has little problem with ethics issues, Senator Stevens and his re-election being an example.

to release her medical records before the election, but she never did that?

Also, it's reported that two of McStain's top advisors went to Palin's hotel room to give her a message from McStain, and when they arrived, Sarah walked out wearing nothing but a TOWEL and told them she would be right out to talk with them!

She is the epitome of TRASH. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

Palin said she didn't buy the cloths. She shops at the thrift store in Wasilla.
She is frugal..that is what she said and she wouldn't lie because she is a Christian.

Oh, maybe the witch doctor made her do it!

Sarah Palin's New GOP: Federal Income Tax Liabilty?
Posted by: Gideon Planish on Nov 11, 2008 5:51 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Can any more U.S. federal tax knowledgable bloggers shed some light on the possible federal tax liabiity of Plain campaign wardrobe?

Perhaps I have not been really paying too much attention to the campaign news coverage regarding the GOP wardrobe (estimated at more that $150,000) provided to Sarah Palin and her family members, but I do not seem to recall any discussion about the former 2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate's possible U.S. federal tax liability for accepting these clothing purchases...

I also seem to recall that the types of clothing that Palin had purchased or had selected for her and her family members are not by definition of the U.S. tax code, necessary for the performance of her job (either as a candidate or actual elected public official), therefore Palin might well owe a consider amount of taxes during the 2008 tax year to the U.S. taxpayer if the Palin campaign wadrobe is considered as either ordinary income or as gifts.
