Barack Obama and his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng have released this statement:

It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer. She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.

Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes, and prayers during this difficult time. It brought our grandmother and us great comfort. Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to any worthy organization in search of a cure for cancer.

what cruel, inhuman deity would call her home the day before he becomes the president of the United States of America?

I'm ashamed to want to believe.

Now his victory will be bittersweet.

How terribly sad. We all knew she was gravely ill, but I had hoped she'd live long enough to see him elected president.

At least he was able to visit her one last time, and say goodbye.

Sadly, The Right Was Wrong

Some troll claimed that Obama's grandmother was not really ill, and that Obama visiting her was all just a political stunt. Was that claim published by right-wing blogs? Well, as always, the claims from the right of left-wing conspiracy are lies. Sadly, Obama's grandmother really was sick. Peace.

One of the best moments of his life and it will be forever saddened by his grandmother's death.
I'm so glad he spent the time with her when he knew she was going.
She was so proud of him.

I add my best wishes to the Obama extended family in this time of loss.

I am certain that Grandmother will be watching her grandson be elected President on Tuesday and will be with him always as he faces the hard work ahead.

May The Powers That Be Bless us all.

there are certainly no words that serve to describe how many of us feel about this. Truly a "tragedy of taking" that rivals any of the great tragedies.

We're so sorry, Barack and family...so sorry.

It is with a sigh, and a shrug, that I note that almost simultaneous to the arrival if this sad news, I see that the Republicans have filed a lawsuit against Obama over his use of the campaign plane to hike over to Hawaii last week.

Drink fully and deeply from the cup of karma, my republican friends. Slake your thirst.

My condolences to Senator Obama, and the Obama family.

God bless her, and may she rest in eternal peace and paradise.

May the good Lord bless, comfort, and give strength to the Obamas at the loss of their dear one.

Alas, we now know that Obama's mother and grandmother died of cancer, and may they rest in peace. For we, the survivors of cancer, may we find a new President who will be fully behind the funding needed to find discriminating diagnostics and cures for the dread disease. The recent cabal in the White House has seen fit to go to war rather than find ways to heal. Here's to Obama's time, and more research for ending the cancer epidemic.

And, please, will he have his girls checked out, when the time is right, to be sure they do not carry the mutation which will send the cancers down through generations of Obamas. Michelle, too.

Would have been nice for the woman to live to see history made and to know that she was part of it. At times like this I question so many things. My sympathy to the Obama fmaily ANNA

Who wants to take bets?

Who wants to take bets that the reich-wing meme will go something like this:

Obama's grandmother just waited until the day before the election to die so that Obama will get sympathy votes?

or

Obams flew to Hawaii during the night to kill his grandmother so that he could get sympathy votes?

or

Obama's grandmother died three years ago but he kept the news quite until just before the election so that he could get sympathy votes?
