Palin Complains: My First Amendment Rights Are Threatened by Criticism

ABC News reports:

In a conservative radio interview that aired in Washington, D.C. Friday morning, Republican vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin said she fears her First Amendment rights may be threatened by "attacks" from reporters who suggest she is engaging in a negative campaign against Barack Obama.

Palin told WMAL-AM that her criticism of Obama's associations, like those with 1960s radical Bill Ayers and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, should not be considered negative attacks. Rather, for reporters or columnists to suggest that it is going negative may constitute an attack that threatens a candidate's free speech rights under the Constitution, Palin said.

"If [the media] convince enough voters that that is negative campaigning, for me to call Barack Obama out on his associations," Palin told host Chris Plante, "then I don't know what the future of our country would be in terms of First Amendment rights and our ability to ask questions without fear of attacks by the mainstream media."

Salon's Glenn Greenwald explains why this argument is frighteningly wrong:

If anything, Palin has this exactly backwards, since one thing that the First Amendment does actually guarantee is a free press. Thus, when the press criticizes a political candidate and a Governor such as Palin, that is a classic example of First Amendment rights being exercised, not abridged.

This isn't only about profound ignorance regarding our basic liberties, though it is obviously that. Palin here is also giving voice here to the standard right-wing grievance instinct: that it's inherently unfair when they're criticized. And now, apparently, it's even unconstitutional.

According to Palin, what the Founders intended with the First Amendment was that political candidates for the most powerful offices in the country and Governors of states would be free to say whatever they want without being criticized in the newspapers. The First Amendment was meant to ensure that powerful political officials would not be "attacked" in the papers. It is even possible to imagine more breathtaking ignorance from someone holding high office and running for even higher office?

I understand the First Amendment:
I may disagree with what you say, but I support your right to say it.

Frankly, its my opinion that what she says is obscene. Her speech creates a clear and present danger of antisocial conduct.

Breathtaking is surely the word here. Sarah has obviously misunderestimated Bush's hard work in protecting and defending our First Amendment rights.

Attacks for asking questions?

"If [the media] convince enough voters that that is negative campaigning ... then I don't know what the future of our country would be in terms of First Amendment rights and our ability to ask questions without fear of attacks by the mainstream media."

According to the quoted comment above, either Ms. Palin is terribly confused ... again ... or she is intentionally attempting to deflect and mislead ... again. I dont think anyone has criticized her for asking questions. The point is that she is being slammed for her habitual innuendo, negative inferences, flat out false statements, mirepresentation and proven lies about Obama. How can she twist those facts by claiming some imagined attack on her 1st Amendment rights? Others who make false claims that cause damage to an individual's career, reputation or livelihood are often held accountable. Is that not why we have safeguards such as libel and slander laws? Just because we have a right to express, does not entitle her or anyone else to besmirch a reputation by continually spreading false rumors and inciting hatred, anger and extreme emotions from voters who listen to her rhetoric and look to her for honest guidance in their desire to find and believe in a candidate to vote for.

Amazing! When it is a GOP candidate, chosen by the divine inner circle, it is fine for her to whine, but Heaven forbid when anyone on the opposing side even suggest that they have been misrepresented, they are called everything in the book and their rights get tossed right under the wheels of the Straight Talk Express! The extreme degree of hypocracy never ceases to shock me.

By Palin's Definition...

her 1st Amendment rights have been violated by the MSM that criticized her, therefore impinging her right to free speech by intimidating her in public. By that same definition then, is she not impinging the MSM by crying foul based on her 1st Amendment rights? The argument reminds me of the portrait of Stephen Corbert where his infinite images are seen in a mirror both in front of and behind him. To me, it is just more of her trying to play the refs (MSM) for any advantage that she can muster.

I can tell from the way she made the argument that it was something somebody else told her to say, since she obviously didn't have a clue as to what she was talking about...

It was not the First Amendment that she was actually talking about, but another act pushed on this nation by John Adams called the Sedition Act which made it a crime for the press or any citizen to say, write, or demonstrate against the government. It cost him his presidency when he had it enforced, and it was immediately repealed by Thomas Jefferson as soon as he took office.

Let us hope that Gov. Palin takes a few courses in American History, not just economics, international policy, military strategy, etc., etc., while she tries to make herself over after Nov. 4th back in Alaska. Maybe then she will understand why she is not now nor ever will be acceptable as President of the United States.

would put down the Kool-Aid long enough to actually READ the Constitution! She isn't aware of the responsibilities of the Vice President. She isn't aware of what the First Amendment says. She isn't aware... PERIOD.

Can the woman read? Can someone hand her a copy of the Constitution? If she's incapable of reading it herself, WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE READ IT TO HER?

This is unprecedented IGNORANCE! She's a public humiliation. A national embarrassment. Oy Vey! Enough!

I read recently that Palin had so charmed several RNC bigwigs, that they fast-tracked her to the Veep spot.

Now I can guess who the bigwigs are.

It works like this:
Bush-43 spends 8 years making Bush-41 and Reagan look like Good Presidents by comparison.
Now Palin's mission is to make Bush-43, and even Dan Quayle, look smart and effective.

I doubt that the Governor can do even that much.

...needn't worry her pretty vacant head about reporters taking her rights to free speech from her; on the contrary, what spews from those crimson lips is riveting, glorious fodder.

You just keep on babbling, little Sarah--you are a reporter's DREAM; and personally, I can't wait for the next paroxysm of hilarity you will inevitably send me off into.

The current republican philosoply is to trample the rights of the common man, and boost the rights of the powerful Elite ( Rich Folks). Palin show this by having a total lack of knowledge of the Constitution, what it says, and what it stands for. She, like Bu$h only have one common objective in mind, that is to RULE the underclass, and to make the Rich the Ruling class. Not exactly what the Founding Fathers had in mind. Strange how the republicans seem to be able to pervert the Constitution at every turn.

Time to sweel the Authoritarians out of office, and relegate them to the dark dank corners of history Where all the other dictators reside.

Read John Dean' s article that appeared on Alternet withing the last couple of days.

It Is Now Absolutely Crystal Clear That Republican Rule Is Dangerous and
Authoritarian

Palin's Future as a theocratic ultra-rightist

This allegedly God-fearing, Pentecostal female has turned out to be just plain raunchy and irresponsible. As such, she fits in well with the great majority of ultra-Right, corporatist fascists of the Republican Party, and as most of their propagandists tell us all, she has a future in the Party.

Some critics have said she'd make a great game-show hostess. This apparently because of her constant waving and flitting about on the platform like the new recepient of a Mom of the Year Award. Her political ignorance and lack of gravamen are stunning. She spends her time shrieking bumper-sticker slogans to the cheering dimwits comprising the crowd, when she isn't humiliating herself in rare meaningful interviews with degreed journalists. She avoids the humiliation when she shows up at Fox Newsfixers Channel to play a nauseating game of patty-cake with the disgusting Hannity and Van Susteren. She has been quite a spectacle in one of the dirtiest of all the campaigns in our history.

Palin vs Freedom of Speech

I heard Palin say, "It's not negative to call our opponent out on his record, on what he has done. If he is elected he may re-write the Constitution and appoint judges who will confiscate your private property." Neat segue from "record of what he has done" to "fictitious rumor about what he might possibly do".

Okay ... it's clear. Sara, we get it. You never bothered to read that Constitution thingy, huh? Wasn't part of anything in any of the schools you went to? Not even one of those journalism courses? Musta' been somthin' those liberal elitist professors who don't love America were teachin', huh? Well, that's alright. If you and John win, an' go to the White House an' stuff, you would have much use for it anyways ... you betcha'!
