GOP Sen. Dole Takes Negative Campaigning to a Whole New Level

Falling behind in her reelection race, Sen. Elizabeth Dole has uncorked one hell of a charge: The Democrat running against me is godless.

Dole's 30-second ad, which is running on television in North Carolina but has not (understandably) been promoted by the GOP, uses a September fundraiser co-hosted by 40 people, including a representative of the Godless America PAC, to falsely accuse Democrat Kay Hagan of being an atheist herself.

The end of the ad features a picture of Hagan with a female voice yelling "there is no God!" -- the clear implication is that the voice is Hagan's. In fact, the Democratic candidate is a Sunday School teacher and an elder at her Presbyterian church.

The Charlotte Observer reported Wednesday morning that Hagan's campaign is seeking a "cease and desist" order against Dole's new attack.

"A leader of the Godless Americans PAC recently held a secret fundraiser in Kay Hagan's honor," the ad begins, showing some ominously blurred footage, ostensibly of the event in question. The ad then quotes the group's Ellen Johnson making atheist claims on two cable news shows. Summing up, the spot asks: "Godless Americans and Kay Hagan. She hid from cameras, took Godless money. What did Hagan promise in return?"

Two weeks ago, when the National Republican Senatorial Committee launched a similar attack, the Fayettville Observer described it as "the nastiest, most misleading, negative ad of the campaign."

Watch:

If the spot reeks of desperation, it's not hard to understand why. According to the Pollster.com average of all surveys taken for the race, Dole fell behind Hagan in the polls in mid-September, with her position worsening ever since.

UPDATE: The Hagan campaign has released a prepared statement to be delivered by Hagan in response to the ad:

State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan

Remarks as prepared

October 29, 2008 press conference

* Thank you for coming today. I know this was called at short notice, and I appreciate you being here for this.

* Let's get right to it. Elizabeth Dole should absolutely be ashamed of herself.

* I don't know what things were like when she grew up in North Carolina, but the North Carolina I was raised in would NEVER condone this kind of personal slander.

* I can't begin to tell you how upset I am that she has attacked my Christian faith.

* She's been in Washington for too long, gotten too close to George Bush and the special interests and this is what she's become.

* I am appalled at these tactics. This is politics of the worst kind, and it's been rejected by North Carolinians at every level. This is so unbecoming of the woman she claims to be.

* I have taught Sunday school. I'm an elder in this church, where the Hagan family has attended for over 100 years. I go on mission trips. I was raised going to Sunday school and church every week. And I raised my children that way.

* On Christmas Eve, we attend the 11:00 evening service, then early on Christmas mornings, my children and husband and I go to the Bell House and cook breakfast for the residents there. My family, my community and my church are the anchors of my life.

* If Senator Dole wants to pass judgment on my faith, that's her right - but it's not what my faith teaches.

* This is a fabricated, pathetic ad.

* I am outraged...That is not my voice at the end of the ad, and I do not share their beliefs.

* This was an event with nearly 40 hosts, including an ambassador and a sitting U.S. Senator (John Kerry).

* We have already contacted our lawyers and are proceeding with a cease and desist order sent to Elizabeth Dole.

* This kind of politics should not be tolerated.

* The politics of George Bush won't create one new job, lower the cost of health care, or do one lick of good for North Carolina.

* At their core, Americans aren't Democrat or Republican, red or blue - they're Americans, plain and simple. We ALL love our country, and we all value the role of faith in American life.

* Shame on anyone who says differently.

* Congress just had to bailout Wall Street, workers' retirement savings are out the window, people are genuinely concerned about keeping their job in this tough economic climate, and Elizabeth Dole is trying to talk about ANYTHING but the issues.

* This attack speaks volumes about her personally and politically, but more importantly, it speaks to the lack of leadership she's shown on behalf of North Carolinians. At this critical point in American history, why isn't Elizabeth Dole talking about what she's done for North Carolinians and what she's planning to do if re-elected?

* This is exactly why people in North Carolina are supporting me - I have real, concrete proposals to help fix what's broken in Washington and advocate on behalf of working families. I've been talking about the issues and ensuring North Carolinians know what real leadership looks like.

* Elizabeth Dole is just relying on the same old, tired rhetoric that divides people instead of bringing them together, and that's the last thing people in North Carolina want right now.

In this country of separation of church and state we get a very good look at the most discriminated against minority in the nation. God (pun intended) help you should you want to run for political office if you don't believe in angels, devils, a man giving birth to the first woman and then shucking the job off on women for the rest of time (hey, if this doesn't prove that men are superior to women, what does?),the trinity-three for the price of one, etc., etc., etc.

Dole's opponent was "accused" of being an atheist. I assume being an atheist is almost as bad, or is it worse, than being a Muslim American, though there are a very small number of elected Muslim American officials in this country. At least the Muslims believe a portion of the mumbo jumbo good Christians accept as absolute reality. No Mumbo Jumbo, no go go.

Of course, non-Christians, or to go further, non-religionists cannot be trusted to participate in the governance of what is, by implication, not really their country. And in the light of the track record of the Christians, Muslims, and Jews you would think somebody would be willing to give the Godless a try. Could the Godless do any worse? Not having a heaven to alleviate the guilt that should be involved in causing the deaths of countless "souls,'or a devil to blame all the bad shit on, who knows, things just might get better.

THE NAKED & VERY UGLY TRUTH

We owe a debt of gratitude to Liddy Dole - as we do to Michelle Bachmann - for stripping themselves of any pretense of civility and revealing the prejudice and paranoia that infest their political philosophy. Their belief that anyone who disagrees with them is either anti-American or godless would be laughable if it weren't so virulent. If McCain and Palin have their way, it will reach epidemic proportions in the last days before the election. God knows, they've done everything they can to spread this kind of hatred -- by embracing hoaxes like Ashley Todd (whose false claims of being assaulted were as backwards as the "B" she carved into herself) -- or using Obama's middle name, Hussein, to imply he's Arab and/or Muslim and therefore, by definition, dangerous (a particularly corrosive accusation, since McCain's own adoptive daughter was born in a predominantly Muslim country). It's a shame that, what might otherwise be seen as America's shining moment, must be sullied by this kind of garbage. The only saving grace is that, when expressed as blatantly as Dole and Bachmann have recently, the ugliness of their attitude is undeniable -- a throwback to the bigotry and xenophobia of an older and much-less enlightened America, where we judged a man on anything BUT the content of his character.

Sure she can. How about fabricating information and/or pics of Hagan dancing with a black man? Worked against Frank Porter Graham, didn't it?

Libby the Carpetbagger Dole should have been run out of NC on rails, tarred and feathered, long ago. Stripped of her sense of infallibility, she goes to the "playbook." No sense of accountability, no morals, no big deal. Just win baby. Classic southern religious hypocrisy.

Dole believes only followers of John Hagee are Christian

Dole is a long time supporter of John Hagee. As is McCain. Hagee has for many years gone on public rants about who can be a true Christian. While he will take money from anyone, he claims only members of his church who are American are chosen by god to be true Christian. A few years ago he was screaming at a BBC presenter for thinking any one who believed in Christianity was Christian. Hagee screamed only Americans that believe in his bible (whatever version that is, there are over 3,000 versions published in the US) and attend his church are true Christian. And then went on to rant about how the US has to declare war on all Muslims and kill them so all the Jews can go back to the Middle East. So they can all be killed to Jesus will come back and kill all the rest of the non believers and then there will be peace. Still seems odd to me that the press had/has a problem with Obama and Rev. Wright but not McCain and his ties to Hagee. Hagee wants world war 3 and has a richer bigger following than Wright.

Kissing Butt

As an agnostic-atheist (I think there is a very SMALL chance that there might be a not-necessarily-benign god or gods), I felt, after reading Hagan's reply to Dole, how Muslim Americans must have felt after all the claims from the Democrats saying emphatically that Obama is not a Muslim.
My question: So, what if Obama WAS a Muslim? So, what if Hagan WAS "godless"?

A political candidate not believing in the superstitions forced on them by society would be a GOOD thing about that candidate, in my opinion.

But I guess you have to kiss the idiots' butts in this country to get elected. Both Hagan and especially Dole are doing that.

Can't say for sure but I Think Elizbeth Dole has always reminded me of a gal that used fly into San Diego and pull a few trick over the weekened! Maybe we should make a TV commerical.
I used to work Vice there and I can't be 100 percent sure but 95% should be good enough in her case!

You do understand that this landmass, this continent was not Christian when the Christians invaded it. Freeing themelves of being persecuted in order to persecute, they immediately set about ridding themselves of the indigenous inhabitants of their new "Eden" through wrfare, murder, lies, broken treaties, death marches, and concentration camps. Their next step after the genocide had been jump started, was to import heathens from the dark continent to provide free labor, stolen labor, stolen lives for their edification and riches in the eyes of their ordained god(s)and their own self-edification.

Ain't that just great, followers of Jesus, you absolute fuckwads. Your so-called "religion" has caused the deaths and suffering of countless millions (non-believers, i.e. non-humans)- and, yet, you go on and on about your hypocritical morality. Can the innocent deaths at the hands of the absolutely certain monotheists even be counted? There are so fucking many. Christians, Jews, Mulims, are you ever going to stop killing each other and everyone else who might lie in your way? I only wish I could believe all the claptrap you lamely mouth to absolve your ubiquitous crimes if only to see you all in Hell!

How is "Atheist" a slander?

Religion is caused by any one or more of about half a dozen mental illnesses.
The truth about religion can be found in these books and others:

"The Neuropsychological bases of god beliefs" Dr. Michael A. Persinger MD,
psychiatrist 1987 "Religious people are just like my temporal lobe patients"

"The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bi-Cameral Mind" Julian
Jaynes Professor, Harvard University 1976 "Religious people are just like
schizophrenic patients"

"The Psychiatric Interview in Clinical Practice" Roger A. MacKinnon, M.D.,
Robert Michels, M.D. W. B. Saunders Co. 1971 "Religiosity is a common
symptom [of] schizophrenic patients"

"The God delusion" by Richard Dawkins. "Religion is caused by a kind of
computer virus that infects the living computer, the human brain."

"The Science of Good and Evil" by Michael Shermer, 2004 "Morality and Ethics
are now in the jurisdiction of Science and greatly improved thereby."

Many books in the new science called "Sociobiology": Morals and ethics are
instinctive and they evolved.

"God: The Failed Hypothesis" by Victor Stenger. Scientific proof that god does
not exist.

"The God Part of the Brain" by Matthew Alper 1996. "The USA is anomolusly
religious because many early founder groups were religiously insane and fleeing
prosecution in Europe. Religion is a genetic disorder."

"The Accidental Mind" by David J. Linden, 2007 Belknap Press of Harvard
University Press. Religion is caused by the extreme klugeyness of the "designed"
by evolution brain. In particular, the narrative creation system cannot be turned
off. It generates false narratives that are believed by the generating person. This is
seen in experiments done in the laboratory. This book has the best explanation of
resistance to evolution: "There has also been an assumption that if one accepts the
idea that life developed without divine intervention, it necessarily follows that all
aspects of religious thought must be rejected. Those who take this line of
argument to extremes argue that when religious thought is rejected moral and
social codes will degenerate and "the law of the jungle" will be all that is left. It is
imagined by religious fundamentalists that those who do not share their particular
religious faith are incapable of leading moral lives." These suppositions are not
true many times over. Linden later mentions that the creationists [intelligent
design advocates] are exactly 180 degrees wrong rather than just a little wrong.
Being exactly wrong, they are unable to unlearn their error. See Sociobiology or
Sciobio.

"Scientists Confront Intelligent Design and Creationism" edited by Petto &
Godfrey, 2007. The ID and creationist crowd are trying to do away with science.
They see science as a "godless religion." Science is a process, not a religion.

"Manufacturing Belief" by Lewis Wolpert
http://www.salon.com/books/feature/2007/05/15/lewis_wolpert/

"The End of Faith" and "Letter to a Christian Nation" by Sam Harris

"Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon", by Daniel Dennett
Let's do scientific research on religion and find out what causes it.

"Origins of the Modern Mind" by Merlin Donald 1991 "So what did you expect
from a brain that is based on the Chimpanzee brain?

"Atheism, A Case Against God" by George Smith

"God is not Great; how religion poisons everything" by Christopher Hitchens, 2007

Campaign backfires: Atheism is the fastest growing "religion."
Posted by: AsteroidMiner on Oct 29, 2008 9:36 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
As a sophomore undergraduate student in Physics, your homework in Probability
and Statistics class may include figuring out when the second coming would be
required, assuming that the bible was 100% true in the year zero. That is, when
would the bible be down to 50% true? The popular and professors' answer in
1965 was the year 500. The true answer: A friend of mine was born and raised in
Budapest, Hungary. As an adult, he came here and stayed. After 25 years, he
visited his home town of Budapest. He was unable to communicate with his high
school classmates because the Hungarian language had changed so much. The
correct answer is less than 25 years. The first gospel was not written down until
50 years after the alleged events and then in a different language. The people who
told the story were at about the same level of civilization as "wild Indians", I mean
Native Americans before Columbus got here. We have all played or seen played
the game called "Telephone" in which a story is passed down a line of re-tellers.
By the Sixth re-telling, the story has no resemblance to the original. The gospel
story had to have been re-told at least 6 times before it was mis-translated the first
time. [Note that whoever wrote it down the first time was free to write whatever
he wanted to. The storytellers were illiterate and unable to check his written text
by reading it. Besides that, he wrote in Greek rather than Aramaic.] Conclusion:
There is no truth anywhere in the bible, and there never was. There is no way to
know what "jesus" or "mohammed" or any other such character actually said or
did.

ALL of the jurisdictions that were formerly in the jurisdiction of religion have
been taken over by Science. There is no longer a need to debate the issue.
Religion is an unfortunate side effect of having evolved from a chimpanzee-like
animal in a very brief 6 or 7 million years. "God" will not save us from the
consequences of global warming or an asteroid impact or a tornado because there
is no such critter as "god.". Ethics and morality are instinctive, not derived from
religion. Female instinct has greater force in morality than male instinct because
the female is in command of the sexual encounter. Look up "Sociobiology". The
origin of the Universe is the subject of Cosmology which is part of astronomy
which is part of the science of physics.
Religion is a SCAM. ANY religion, there are 10,000 to choose from at any one
time. People keep inventing new religions [for the benefit of the "prophet," of
course] and forgetting other religions. ALL preachers, priests, imams, rabbis,
iatolas, etc. belong in jail for "grand theft, bunko type".

What can you expect from the person who brought scandal and corruption to the Red Cross? Elizabeth Dole should be in prison, not holding a national office. I think escaping accountability for corruption is a pre-requisite for holding ANY office in the Republican Party.
