A Class Analysis of Palin’s Classy New Clothes

All this criticism is not sliding off Palin’s silk-covered back.

Let me be clear off the top that all talk of Sarah Palin's (rather gorgeous) wardrobe is a diversion from what really counts: stuff like her position against choice, her ignorance of world politics and her intermittent allergy to the truth. But I can't say I feel at one with those making such a hoopla around her new duds. Pundits are saying that it is an image error. After all, they point out, she's the average hockey mom, the local small-town girl, the one who has pulled herself up from little privilege to the national stage. Fancy-schmancy clothes from Neiman-Marcus, commentators are saying, contradict this picture of the working class gal made good.

I don't agree.

When I was growing up, I wore three-year-old hand-me-downs from Anne, the daughter of one of my mother's friends. Three years is bad timing. You can't pass it off as this year's or even last year's style. And it's not old enough to call it retro. No, three-year-old fashion means only one thing: used clothes.

Fashion 1950s Any poor or working class woman of my generation remembers what it felt like to have their look determined by the taste and resources of an older sister or cousin. It sucked. The first focus of my college education when I left Pittsburgh at 17 on a full scholarship to go to a big city university was getting my hands on some clothes. I arrived in a navy blue stitched-down pleated skirt and black turtleneck while my dorm-mates were wearing matching floral-print PVC mini-skirts and go-go boots.

My hunger for clothes has never waned and I bet Sarah Palin feels the same. I imagine that these gorgeous new items from high-tone retailers paid for by others are as much a high as the cheering crowds. As someone pointed out, she wore fleece in her last campaign. Once word of nearly $150,000 spent on her garb (and bits and pieces for Trig and perhaps the First Dude) hit the news, Palin must have been gutted by the campaign's defensive announcement that after November the clothes would be donated to charity. She may not have realized that if she kept the stuff she'd have to pay income taxes on that $150,000.

This lavish wardrobe was not, I suspect, of Palin's own doing. It's not like she's been out cruising the malls for bargains. She was probably given a couple of catalogs, a buyer to consult with and encouragement to look her best. She is unlikely to know about campaign finance rules and regulations about tarting up the old closet. (It's okay that the Republican National Committee paid for them and a good thing the campaign didn't.) The woman's in the lens most hours of the day. She wants to look super-eye-popping to a degree that Joe Biden most likely can't match.

Fashion palin fey Palin has clearly adjusted to a new level of fashion. The costume designer on Saturday Night Live, where Palin appeared, "revealed the struggle he had in dressing Sarah Palin: she wanted to wear nicer clothes than they had picked out for her, reflecting the new image she has carefully constructed on the campaign trail." Apparently the red outfit chosen for Tina Fey when she started impersonating Palin a month ago, was just too "month ago" for Palin.

Of course once people start looking into this stuff, it snowballs. It turns out that Palin is applying more than just a touch of lipstick. The New York Times reports that, "Ms. Strozzi, who was nominated for an Emmy award for her makeup work on the television show 'So You Think You Can Dance?', was paid $22,800 for the first two weeks of October alone, according to the records." Now, I'm very curious if this is the same make-up artist who was paid over $5,500 to do McCain's debate make-up. I reported on this in my book Thanks But No Thanks: The Voter's Guide to Sarah Palin.

Fashion fleece All this criticism is not sliding off Palin's silk-covered back. In fact, Governor Palin now denies that she's received such an expensive load of threads. In an interview in the Chicago Tribute she insisted that the clothes aren't worth that much (The NYTimes gives the details in this article.).

Palin protested "That whole thing is just, bad!... Oh, if people only knew how frugal we are."

I for one do know how frugal Sarah Palin has been. She was frugal when it came to paying for the rape kits of victims in Wasilla and when women's shelters asked for resources. She's been frugal with her attention to the environment, to sex education for young people, to women's right to choose and to world affairs. Yes, indeedy. Finally Sarah Palin and I can agree: she's been damned frugal.

John Edwards Haircuts, Sarah Palin's Wardrobe

"This lavish wardrobe was not, I suspect, of Palin's own doing. It's not like she's been out cruising the malls for bargains. She was probably given a couple of catalogs, a buyer to consult with and encouragement to look her best."

Ever since Richard Nixon's Klieg light accentuated five o'clock shadow cost him the debate, politicians and beauticians have been inseparable. I was an early Edwards supporter. After having to listen to endless $400 haircut jokes, my first reaction was "what's sauce for the goose."

Its a slippery slope, with a FOX News team waiting at the bottom. You better make sure your candidate is like Caesar's wife before you push your sled off. All it will take is one news story about Michelle's cocktail dress or Barack's Floershiem shoes, and the rant-wing chorus will have enough material to swing the election.

As Ms. Katz suggests in her last paragraph, let's keep the debate focused where they are the most uncomfortable; real issues like women's rights, the environment, world affairs.

Gimme a break, you can't use your experience of a 'hunger for clothes' to compare with Ms Palin's. I too grew up poor, and in a developing country into the bargain (I arrived at university with two skirts and two shirts, each of which had to be washed every day so I was always clean), so I know exactly how you felt. But Ms Palin did NOT grow up that way. She's always been at least comfortable, so the 'kid in a candy store' argument doesn't work for me.

Somehow, I doubt she's had to struggle a whole hell of a lot.

In fact, from what we're seeing, she's consistently looked out for No. 1 in her agendas (giving herself a tiny, token paycut when she first became mayor, then re-decorating her office with taxpayer dimes) and has also, for example, punished rape victims by making them pay for their own rape kits.

I will do my part to keep The Wide-Eyed, Flesh-Eating Teddy Bear out of the White House...by voting.

There is something else the Governor, the cast of SNL and you can agree on: Sarah Palin the VP candidate is a fraud. They have created a new her and it hardly fits with the old her, whoever and whomever is now defined as SP. It just widens the disconnect and reveals the hypocrisy of the man and men who are using her for their own gain.

Don't cry for Sarah however. She's laughing all the way to the bank and it is only appropriate that she will become the butt of her own aggrandized ambitions.

keeps claiming. Ah, but why bother, right? With a dysfunctional electorate we have, the die-hard Palin supporters will now be thinking that voting for Mccain/Palin will also make them "rich" celebrities like them. It's people like watching Arnold Schwarzenegger or Reese Witherspoon and then deluding themselves into believing that they'll somehow be as tough as Arnold or a "beauty queen" like Witherspoon when these poor slobs have no money or self-esteem to begin with !

Isn't this a little like the Julia Roberts' movie, "Pretty Woman"? Not that Palin is a street-walker, mind you, but that same sense of "the clothes make the women." Dress her up, and now she's high society. It's fantasy.

Lots of people would love to have an unlimited budget to wear whatever they want. Palin's mistake was that her new wardrobe from Needless Markup directly contradicts her "hockey mom" image.

She'd be better off dressing in fancy Country Music duds--definitely more consistent with her image.

She's dressing down for her rallies now. She looks frumpy! I bet she still gets to take all the goodies back to Alaska with her! Hope she can find some use for them like, oh say, selling them on eBay at a huge loss? Sorta like the state's airplane!?!

Missing the Point

I think a huge point was missed in this article, what sociologists call impression management. In today's media age, people communicate through appearance, including props such as clothing. It has become very dangerous because it is all style over substance. I think the republicans counted on wooing the public with eye candy and image as usual! But we have reached such a point of crisis the public is looking past even that.

p.s. One can have nice clothes without going to such extremes!!!!! Michelle Obama's off the rack dresses looked great on her and women flocked to buy the same style. NO EXCUSE for over $2000 on one blazer during one of the worst economic crises ever!!!

CARIBOU BARBIE RIDES AGAIN
A quick peek into Sarah Palin's camp and one will come to the conclusion there's something afoot. Using Astral Projection I was able to get past the doors and became the fly on the wall. Between bong hits and jello shooters her plan began to unfold.
' Look,' she started, " McCain is an old goat!". " For Christ's sake, the man needs spray starch just to get a hard-on, how the hell is he supposed to lead?" Slamming her hands on the wall, nearly hitting me, " And they want to muzzle me?" she continued. " I'm the best thing that ever happened to this God forsaken party!" she exclaimed. Looking in the mirror Palin continued " just look at my Doe-like eyes, these boobs and how about my ass! No one can even come close to what I've got to offer." she railed in disgust. " What the fuck is with Mccain...offering VP blowjobs for $100,000 donations..WHAT GALL!!!!"
"Does he have any idea just how many moose I had to do that to just to become Mayor?" " You son-of-a-bitch!!!' she screamed at Mccain's picture on the wall, which she proceeded to yank down to the floor and began to piss on it. " How do ya like me now Johnny!!" she bellowed.
After several staffers tried to calm her down, finally a hype full of thorazine
did the trick. " Do they even know what we're trying to do?" Palin asked her staffers. " Not a chance Sarah." came the response. "We're trying to get Alaska away from the union." Palin carried on, " I told Todd he could have fucking Hawaii just because he likes Maui Wowie and they are'nt even a State."
Just then the phone rang,I could'nt tell who was on the other line but Palin's demeanor told me it was Johnny Boy. " Oh, Hello," she began, " I was just talking about our platform" she continued all the while pretending to gag herself with her finger. " Why no, I never said you were an old fart with bad skin" she told Mccain, then she wiped her ass with the phone. " No, I did'nt say Cindy used super glue on her lady parts" " Who's saying this shit anyway?" she questioned. " Todd!!!" came the shocked response. Cupping the phone Palin turned to a staffer and said " I'm gonna bite his dick off!" Going sweetie-pie again " I'll have a chat with him, don't you worry Johnny" she told McCain.
Hanging up the phone Palin began banging her head against the wall, " What is with that asswipe pudfucker trying to do to me!" she cried. " It was his idea to gut that moose, I'm a vegetarian God Dammit!!" " Now he's making moves on Cindy Mccain." raged the Wassilla Wombat. " This is how we're going to handle this." said the angry Palin. " First, we're making America only the lower 48,fuck Alaska and Hawaii, I hate moose and pineapple anyway. Then I'm going to boob slap Johnny Mac until he makes me the front runner and him the VP,then we'll see just how many knobbers he can handle." pausing for another jello shooter
Sarah rambled on, " Then we'll make virginity tests a law to get into school.
Then declare a state of emergency on energy and order oil wells in every yard in America." About that time Todd came into the room, " Sarah," he started,
" I think you may need to tone it down a bit...." Before the man could finish Sarah jumped on him with a meat mallet screaming " Gut the moose Sarah,
whack she nailed Todd with the mallet " Be nice to Cindy." pow she nailed him again. " I'm not giving you shit" she yelled. Dropping the mallet she began kicking Todd in the nuts several times over. " Now get up,ice off your nuts and put a smile on your face. We've got an interview with US magazine" pulling her skirt down Sarah walked her battered husband to the hall and in a hail of flashbulbs she kissed his cheek and said " Don't you just love this man?"
About that time I felt the need to get the hell out of there because even as a fly there's only so much shit a person can handle.

What do think would be happening today if no one had seen this on the disclosure forms? Correct - she'd be wearing the expensive, great looking threads.

Nice try, Sarah. We now know BS when it's pouring out of your mouth. Just like when you said you were glad you were found Not Guilty of ethics violations when, in fact, just the opposite was true.

There was no class analysis here. Sorry you had to wear hand-me-downs, but I don't see what that has to do with this. By the way, since when is fleece categorically a hand-me-down?

I grew up poor working class too, and I too wore hand-me-downs. I didn't have a sister, so I was relegated to wearing clothes cousins gave us.

Now that I'm grown up and control my own finances, I prioritize having a sharp business wardrobe and comfortable weekend clothes. But the point is, I PAY FOR THEM MYSELF.

The budget spent on my wardrobe comes out of my pocket. Nothing is provided by my employer, and this is standard. While a professional look is required, I am not given any extra expense accounts to make that happen.

Furthermore, a professional wardrobe doesn't cost $150,000 and doesn't come from Sacs. Some members of the media try to say we're being sexist and not talking about men's suits. So let's not be sexist: How much is McCains' wardrobe worth? How much clothing does Dub-ya purchase in a year? Did Palin get 150 thousand-dollar outfits? Or fifteen ten-thousand-dollar outfits?

and if she's so frugal, why isn't she aware of these things herself?

Buy Your Own Stuff

The real issue is that as a free person you buy your own stuff. Pictures of her little kid with an expensive handbag would indicate that they aren't buying their own stuff. Not to mention the fact that Sarah is trying now to pretend that she wasn't wearing these expensive outfits etc. - itis beyond the pale, except to say that when you witness a liar, consider it true. There's no doubt that Cindy McCain helped chose Sarah's god awful outfits & there's nothing wrong with this except for that fact that noone can be honest about any of it. Poor Cindy McCain is so totally dated, while quite wealthy, mandated to Sarah to wear outdated bright red leather jackets. Yuck. Well, that was a total give away. But back to the point at hand, real people buy their own stuff. And while we are speaking about this, $22K for makeup? Bobbie Brown is probably doing backward flips. Noone with Bobbie would ever have blush lines let alone for $22K. Yep -McCain is totally hardcore senile.

This "hockey mom" has $$$

Let's not forget that the Palins have an annual income (more than the $250 K tax threshhold) and a net worth (more than a million) that put them in the top 5% for wealth. She's a governor, and her husband's job title on the oil fields is "production supervisor". These are not the simple, folksy, WalMart rubes she likes to pretend they are.

As to understanding what the public should pay for -- this is the woman who, as Governor, has charged the State of Alaska for meals and lodging for the 300 nights she spent at her private home, instead of in the taxpayer-provided Governor's mansion. That's about half the time she's been governor. Add in travel costs for schlepping her kids between Juneau and Wasilla, and you've got someone who wouldn't find it at all strange that someone else would pay for her makeover and wardrobe.

And that's why it's not trivial or catty to discuss what her clothes, makeup, and on-the-road hairdressing have cost -- this is someone who is all for "spreading the wealth", just as long as the spreading is in her direction, and this is someone promulgating a completely false persona. At a time where income and wealth inequality are greater in the US than in any other developed country, and when the actual middle class is facing financial devastation, this affluent woman is palming herself off as "Joe Six-Pack" and a thrift-store shopper, while accusing Obama of being a socialist for proposing a return to pre-2001 graduated tax rates.

Why is everyone making a big deal about Palin's wardrobe? So what? If we had to go down all t he candidates expenses, I am sure 80% if not more would seem extravagent. I find it absurd that Obama is spending $5,000,000 on advertising. Is this any more valorous? Or less corrupt? Of course not.

What is with the sexism? These candidates need to be scrutinized equally. Look at Palin's wardrobe, look at all four candidates expenses as well? When these candidates speak, they are not only using their own funds, but public funds, to include city police, safety and medical personnel, and to include an increase in Secret Service earlier this summer to $9,5 million.

There is clearly a lot of frivolous spending that is not warranted and Palin's wardrobe is simply not the pink elephant in the room.
