Palin Defends RNC Clothing, Discusses Accessories

Posted by Rachel Weiner, Huffington Post at 9:55 AM on October 27, 2008.

But ... that's apparently not what the McCain campaign wanted Palin to talk about.

Sarah Palin addresses the $150,000 in clothing purchased for her by the Republican National Committee at a rally. She compares the outfits to the lighting at an event, saying it doesn't belong to her and that she will go back to shopping at her "favorite consignment store" once the race is over. She went on to highlight some of her inexpensive accessories. Watch:

Apparently, that's not what the McCain campaign wanted Palin to say. A senior adviser to the candidate told CNN's Dana Bash that the clothing comments "were not the remarks we sent to her plane this morning."

John McCain also defended the purchases on "Meet The Press" Sunday morning. He said that a third of the clothing has been returned, and that the rest will be donated to charity.

It's not the clothes, but the hyprocrisy

I keep hearing conservatives claiming Palin's wardrobe should not be an issue, and I agree that it shouldn't be... if it didn't directly contradict the image the RNC is building of Palin. This image is of a plain ol' hocky mom who shops at Walmart and consignment shops, who is frugal and lives more like all the Joe 6-packs out there. She is, the story goes, a fiscal conservative who we should trust with our economy. At this point a $150K wardrobe suddenly becomes very relevant, as does the $21K Alaskan citizens paid to fly her family to all her events (especially the 5-day trip to NY with her oldest daughter).

So Elisabeth Hasselbeck can complain all she wants about this sexist attack on Palin, but she should realize it's not about the clothes, but about the hypocrisy. Sure, the other candidates probably all wear expensive clothes, too, but they aren't out there claiming to be Joe 6-pack, either. When they do, I think we should be critical of their wardrobes, too.

Greg

There is just something amiss with Palin's total being; it belies what her promos have reported. The resultant questions drive one to distraction. If she has something valid to say, or is saying, her shouting demeanor shatters her credibility, and it's enough to make us all run for cover.

Her poor kids! Mine would no more roam around the nation with me, if I had wanted them to, leaving their schools, friends, and beds at home, than skip a meal! Nor should the Palin children.

It just isn't safe to expose children to the public as that woman has done; she is either so sheltered by the small population in which she lives she doesn't realize what could happen (but most mothers would realize as soon as they saw the crowds), or she is so "hell-bent for election" she does not care about anyone other than herself! The Secret Service should have limits!

Does anyone know of any other sane woman in office, or entertainment who drags her children around into crowds like Palin? I think that's fueling our attitude toward her to a great extend. She's nuts!

The women trailing after "McBlame" cast serious doubts about the rest of us "my friends -ya betcha", and we don't like it! We've spent over 100 years working hard for equity, to vote, run for office (oh were we in Iran there'd be far more women in Congress!) and to prove being a responsible parent does not have to be a career trade-off (any more than it does for a man) and along comes some "trophy girls" (who act like Barbies)who could care less about the security and privacy of the family, and hesitate not to insult, lie, and feed off one another to gain their titular head's approval. Hasselback is certainly an example. Poor women!

What a mess!

Why-how could anyone-would anybody in this country want a vice-president with a voice or speaking style of Sarah Palin? She sends chills up my spine almost as much as fingernails on a chalkboard.

Someone tell me it's an act to stimulated deep seated brain connections to mythical "innocent" teenage girls. No adult really is that stupid or actually talks like that, eh?

Could the McCain campaign have been this incompetent? Who, exactly, might it be that they are appealing to with this woman that would not have voted for them regardless of who their VP nominee was? Whatever chance they had with the independent middle is shot to hell because of her and winning the middle is the only way they might be able to win the election. This is no way to run a campaign and, certainly, not a country. Of course, anyone who has been marginally alive for the last 14 years knows full well that the Republicans haven't a clue as to how to run a country.

The party knows where to donate them to now ... LOL She will be notified when to pick up her favorites at rock bottom, thrift store prices. How clever. I will have to remember that one.

I hope she never has the honor of being a gold star mom. I hope her son comes home all safe and sound.

The RNC should not be surprised by her deviation from their script. After all she is a maverick. She's just being all mavericky.
