The White House apparently has asked the Justice Department to intervene in an ongoing dispute in Ohio where Republicans have thus far been unable to challenge the voter registrations of 200,000 or more Ohioans, according to a report in ConsortiumNews.com

The report, by Jason Leopold, begins:

Bush forwarded to Attorney General Michael Mukasey a Republican request that he intervene in the battleground state of Ohio to force 200,000 new voters to either verify the information on their registration forms or cast provisional ballots, which are often thrown out after the voter leaves the polling place.

Similarly, two years ago when Bush feared Democratic victories in congressional races, the President “spoke with Attorney General [Alberto] Gonzales in October 2006 about their concerns over voter fraud,” according to a Justice Department Inspector General’s reported released earlier this month.

You can read the rest of the report here. To date, Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, a Democrat and former judge, has prevailed in numerous lawsuits on this issue -- including an appeal by the Ohio Republican Party that was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court. You can expect more developments in this story next week.

Mukasey is dirty and this bush-driven request is a smoke and mirror distraction.

DOJ merely an ARM

Sad to note that the DOJ is merely another arm of the Republican Party .Mukasey is actually worse than Gonzales
It is amazing the Supreme Court overturns the Decision and so Bush uses a part of the Executive Branch to accomplish the same deed . There was plenty of testimony about the actions og Blackwell in the 2004 vote but the DOJ did nothing about that stuff .

Stealing Ohio again

I fully expect the Rove machine to try and steal Ohio again. I want to see them do it, in such an obvious way that people finally rise up and rebel against a McCain "victory" in Ohio. I think if McCain actually assumes office under a huge cloud of outrage over probable election fraud, then that just might be the final tipping point to launch a truly progressive movement.

George Bush has taken the oath of office to “protect and defend our Constitution”. This must mean that the rights of citizens to register and vote are guaranteed by his entire administration to be efficient, legal, sensible, respectful and not difficult to accomplish. Instead, Bush, Cheney and all their cheats in the Repub. party make every single illegal, unethical, hurtful, undemocratic and underhanded effort to deny the vote to potential Democratic Party voters. Because we must strive to have a gov’t. “By the people”, a second reason for impeachment should not be necessary, although this list is a long one. Anyone involved in this undermining of our democracy should be quickly brought to justice so that this cancer on our freedoms can be fully removed.

need to BE PROSECUTED AND GO TO PRISON!

One thing we need to press the new Congress on is complete electoral reform from top to bottom!

Included in that should be NATIONAL RULES that oversee registration, voting, vote counting, etc. ONE law, instead of 50 different ways to go about voting.

If we can't have free and fair elections, what good is any election? If they can be fixed or stolen, what good is the system that allows that? People need to have faith in their electoral process or there we have already lost.

Even with voter suppression the Republicans may not be able to "win" Ohio this time. Their efforts at voter intimidation reveal how insecure they feel. In any case, even without Ohio's electoral votes Obama will probably win and then Mukasey et al ought to start sh...ing in their pants. Because they don't have Ken Blackwell to cover up for them this time.
A Justice Department with a new AG will likely be cleaning house big time.
Nov 5 is the start of a new era and on Jan 20 power will change hands.
