Karl Rove Nearly Handcuffed by Activist Who Tried to Put Him Under Citizen's Arrest for 'Treason'

Karl Rove slapped away a woman who tried to place him under citizen's arrest during an event in San Francisco, CA. The following is a press release from CODEPINK, who organized the bold act of civil obedience.

When Karl Rove took the stage at the Mortgage Bankers Association annual convention at the Moscone Center in San Francisco today, CODEPINK women in the audience staged a citizen's arrest of the former Bush Administration chief of staff, under California Code 837. This action follows on the heels of yesterday's appearance on stage of Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CODEPINK, who disrupted the convention to ask for a moratorium on foreclosures.

Janine Boneparth, 58, of Ross, CA, walked on the stage with handcuffs and placed a cuff on Rove's wrist before he yanked it away, while stating, "I have to make a citizens arrest. You are under arrest for treason."
At the same moment, Nancy Mancias, 38, of San Francisco, CA, held a banner in front of the stage that read, "Rove (hearts) torture, treason and fraud!" "Ladies and gentlemen, Karl Rove is not fit to address you today," Mancias said. "Karl Rove was involved in lying to the American people about the Iraq war."

The moderator responded by asking Sen. Mitchell and Rove, with a chuckle, who will win the World Series. After Rove talked about who in Congress is responsible for the economic crisis and who people should believe, Rae Abileah, 25, of Half Moon Bay, stood up. "Karl Rove, how can we believe you when you lied to get us into the war in Iraq?" Abileah said. "You are under arrest for contempt of Congress." Abileah held up a banner that read: "ARREST ROVE/ Lying about War/ Outing C.I.A. Agent/ Contempt of Congress/ Supporting Torture." Three security men tackled her and clasped their hands over her face. She broke free and repeated, "Rove is under arrest for treason."

A few minutes later, when Rove was talking about the war, Keiko Schnelle, 21, of Albany, and Blaine Clarke, 28, of San Francisco, stood up with a banner that said "Rove = War Criminal." "Karl Rove is the one misleading the American people," Clarke shouted. "Karl Rove is a war criminal. Arrest Karl Rove!"

Security then pushed Clarke to the ground and dragged her out along with Schnelle. All five CODEPINK women were escorted out of the building by police without charges. They asked police to assist with the future citizens arrest of Karl Rove.

Digg!

I wish these sort of tactics worked, but in this day and age these symbolic actions communicate very different messages to different demographics. To radicals and so called progressives, this plays really well. But to moderates it looks juvenile,nd to conservatives it's an act of war. Demonstrations that only communicate to those who agree are a form of masturbation. In the mainstream middle class midwest the phrase,(beloved of Limbaugh and other demagogues)"San Francisco politics" translates literally as "these people are wackos" demonstrations should communicate effectivey to those who don't understand the issue being addressed. If this kind of thing did work ,we wouldn;t be in as much of a mess as we are.Learn how to communicate with the mainstream and conservative members of your community if you want real ,sustainable change. You know old fashioned grass roots organization. Fortunately Obama's crew understands these fundamentals of political effectiveness.

In a preemptive move, this is why the Bush administration passed the prison rape law early in their administration. They wanted to make sure the they did the ****ing and were not getting ****ed.

Still this was great to see him publicly humiliate. Code Pink rocks.

What irks me also is how doughboy flagrantly ignores a Congressional subpoena. Meanwhile he is on Faux news and has public speaking engagements!! Everyone's eyes are CLOSED to the rule of law. As a society, we do this at our own peril. Nothing good can come from this.

Thank God for activists like CODEPINK and all of us who see doughboy for the criminal he is.

Belong to the women of Code Pink. In fact, they have made the metaphor of testicular hypertrophy and courage totally obsolete (as have other women in our history). From now on, when referencing or expounding on courage, the catch phrase ought to be "What a set of ovaries on that one!".

This is exactly the kind of public action that has been desperately needed in America for the last 8 years. No doubt some right-wing, pasty-faced, history revising, dipstick will portray Code Pink as "terrorists" 40 years from today, but if you live long enough (I probably won't) remember what happened here and stand up for truth. Just like these brave women are doing.

it sure would be cool if more Americans had the spine and strength of will to act like CodePink and all the other brave activists who engage in direct action to right the many wrongs in our nation. Its really not that hard y'all. And despite the corporate media's portrayal of these kinds of things as extreme, most Americans appreciate this kind of bravery. Any time i got popped for standing up, folks tossed in cash for bail and fines and bought me beers to boot. So please get to it, the hour is late, all y'all are needed and CodePink can't do it all.

Bless you, Codepink!

THIS is the kind of direct action that has been missing too long in this country! Far too much opposition to The Man these days is the "armchair" kind. It is easy for Rove and others of his ilk to ignore it.

What these gals did---all I can say is THANK YOU!

I'm not suggesting anyone should try anything illegal or anything, but it's interesting to speculate about the potential result of 10 to 20 determined citizens from the audience leaping onto the stage in unison and surrounding the hapless troll, cuffing him and dragging him out a pre-determined side or rear exit into a waiting van...

The folks who went after him piecemeal were bold, courageous, and doomed to failure. I applaud their gesture.

Cheers to Code Pink! Thank you for not wearing tutus for the occasion.

I admire your guts, and this is a good step one.

Karl Rove is guilty of nothing less than attempting to dismantle the US government from the inside. Treason is the polite way of putting it.

He has tried to CHEAT the repugs in as a "permanent majority."

He needs to be drug off in chains and jailed.

Then, let's see him shot by firing squad while the fat lady sings the Star Spangled Banner.

Then, and only then, will I breathe a sigh of relief.

Granny's crazy videos = Go get a chuckle!

Rove lies as usual about the Democrats. As I recall Senator Hagel sponsered legislation for more regulation of the Mac's but was undermined by 17 GOP collegeues through a lobbying group called 612. As I recall this was 2005
Perhaps one day Rove will end up in the food stamp line due to all his despicable actions.

Posted by: TheAverageMan on Oct 22, 2008 9:29 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
All this happens, and the question their reporter is going to ask Rove is "will Sarah Palin cost McCain the election"?!?? How does Rove know, and who cares? How about:

"Mr. Rove, why do you refuse to appear before Congress, and why shouldn't you been arrested for ignoring their subpoena?"

That said, the way to go about confronting Rove on that stage would have been to pay him a complement: "I am such a huge fan, I just have to shake your hand!" THEN he would have offered it up, instead of refusing. Get the cuff on him first. Then no matter what they try to do with you, Rove's going along!

...and their direct citizen actions.

should I live a bit longer, and see that the Dems do nothing for this country I'll vote for Cindy Sheehan and like minded people, possibly including Cynthia McKinney. I wish those two would join forces. And some of these kinds of things just might happen because women in the USA are getting stronger and standing up for themselves, and for women's issues. But they are also standing up for issues of liberty, human rights and freedom that men are not doing a good enough job of standing up for, myself included.

More and more women, from both political parties, are pushing for and demanding women's rights, such as control over their own bodies. America will see the end of the third class citizenship for women that has long been perpetrated by various religious groups all of which are run by men, often old and supposedly celibate men, who so often are incipient and dishonest closet homosexuals.

According to a survey, 70% of Republican women are pro-choice. And that number will only grow. Possibly that is the reason why the Repubs did not pass anti- abortion legislation when they had a super majority in the US Congress for six years.

There is little doubt that 'woman power' is growing. And that is as it should be. Women are, by far, the biggest minority in the world. When women achieve some kind of parity the world will be a far better place for all human beings, for each and every one of us.

LOL, he should be handcuffed and charged as such! And as soon as they are done with him, they should do the same to Dictator Bush, the biggest war criminal of ALL time!

Wish they had arrested him for real. Treason is still a crime, isn't it? To see a funny, cartoony video on the subject, go to youtube.com and type in "Karl Rove's Pitchfork".

I admire CODEPINK. It deserves our support.

Patriot Janine Boneparth has more backbone and integrity than the top dozen war criminals in the Bush regime combined.

Karl Rove will have to travel carefully in the years ahead to avoid arrest for his crimes.

That will be his legacy. Karl as in KKK, will be in our dictionary with the definition of "Criminal manipulator of elections". How I dream of those handcuffs on his writs and jail bars across his bloated, doughboy face. Sorry, but whenever I see his face I just fume, fuss and fantasize.

Why hasn't our Democratic Congress made sure to at least start impeachment of Bush so that he can't pardon all those criminals on his
way out. GET ME OFF THE CEILING PLEASE AS I'M FURIOUS.

I have renewed respect and comradeship with Codepink leadership and supporters for their moral courage in taking center stage in issues that are important to me and to millions of progressives all over our country.
It was so heartwarming to see that Carl the criminal was nearly handcuffed. Those cops should have helped or at least eased up a little maybe a few more seconds and Carl could have been in both cuffs.

Yes, it was a cute publicity stunt.

But let me ask you, what was the effect?

How did it change ANYTHING, even one person's mind, about any subject.

Did they provide any information to anyone that they didn't have before?

The answer to all of these, is a resounding "No".

All that code pink REALLY did, was stage a little stunt that got them a little publicity, and give themselves something to congratulate themselves about.

It was a waste of time.

...arrest Rove themselves? It's not like he hasn't committed a crime--he's refused to attend Congressional hearings chaired by Henry Waxman, and that's contempt of Congress, which IS a crime, one that Rove has committed numerous times. But wait! Hark! New rules, right?

Yep--I forgot! Only people making UNDER $250,000.00/year, can be arrested for suspicion--let alone, actually having committed--crimes, right?

for attempting to do something that Congress has failed to do. Karl Rove is a disgusting man, much like those he has worked with. He should be brought to trial. I do not understand why Code Pink was NOT assisted by the officers in completing the "citizen" arrest. Perhaps some of the legaleze who read and or post here could enlighten the readers why this "citizen" arrest could not be made. Rove will most likely get a "Presidential" pardon before Bushkavite leaves office but one can hope that Rove will see justice!
