Appearing on MSNBC’s Hardball today, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) attacked the patriotism of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), based on his alleged relationship to former Weather Underground member William Ayers and the values of Obama’s former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. “I’m very concerned that he may have anti-American views,” said Bachmann. “That’s what the American people are concerned about.”

She then went further, suggesting that all liberal views — held by people such as Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, professors, and all Americans who identify themselves as “liberals” — are “anti-American.” When host Chris Matthews, stunned by her remarks, asked Bachmann how many people in Congress hold anti-American views, she responded, “You’ll have to ask them.”

Bachmann called on the media to conduct investigations into the anti-American activities of members of Congress, similar to Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s discredited House Un-American Activities Committee hearings in the 1950s. “I think people would love to see an exposé like that,” she claimed. Watch it:

Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) made similar comments at a fundraiser yesterday, saying that she loved to visit “pro-America” areas of the country — “small towns” where “hard working” people are “very patriotic.”

UpdateThe Nation’s Katrina Vanden Heuvel, responding to Bachmann’s attacks, said, “Chris, I fear for my country.” Watch it here.

Reclaiming the meaning of 'patriotism' and 'American Values'

Anyone who has bothered to read the Great Sociological thriller 1984, Has been watching this construction of the Ministry of Truth for Decades.
When did Rejecting The Pledge 'give me Your tired, Your Poor' on the Statue of Liberty become an 'American Value'
When did Assuring that no person falls under the misconception 'All men are Created Equal' Become an American Virtue?
When did Free speech become an Act of Rebellion?
When did ignoring our right and Responsilbity to participate in the Democratic Process become UnPatriotic?
Far Too many Decades Ago.And with the Religious right we have been vilified on an Immortal Level too.
Honestly their Frantic Attacks only make me think we are finally making some headway- on Reality vs Indoctrination

I haven't been so disgusted with someone in a long long time. She has just been added at the top of the list of anti-American violence inciting rethugs for me.

1. Bill Ayers...since being in the weather underground...was named Chicago citizen of the year, and is a respected university professor. And what was this group protesting? A just war? Please. If only Americans had balls like this now. Why does no one bring this up?

2. Chris Matthews was part of this, as he didn't call out this as the BS it is. Instead, he gave her a platform and didn't challenge her as he should have. Shame.

3. This kind of rhetoric is going to bring about a very violent November, mark my words. Prepare for the worst, ladies and gents. It's going to get ugly...the worst of America is about to be unleashed. Either way, we lose. Either there is a stolen election and protesters are imprisoned...or the racist mob is unleashed by a landslide for Obama.

I fear for the well being of my family and friends. I fear for the republic.

This is what conservatives have been hinting around at for years, that liberals are anti-American. They leave the actual attacks to Ann Coulter and others so people know what they are talking about when they hint at it. Bachmann just hasn't been coached to leave it as an unspoken hint.

I happen to think Bachmann is (half) right:

We certainly do need investigations into all the un-American and anti-American activities - but of the neoconservatives and religious right extremists. Unfortunately, that could never happen, as it would require the MSM investigating themselves and reporting on their complicity in such activities.

By the way, who but an extremist lunatic would call Nancy "impeachment is off the table" Pelosi and her Senatorial partner Harry "we've got to bail out Wall Street" Reid liberals?

What is really being said here?

Don't bother looking into OUR voter fraud and our other actually illegal doings as you have been. Instead worry about the boogeyman of "anti-americanism"... whatever that acually means. What is "anti-american" any way? Its just a vague term for whatever insecurities happen to be floating around among the "patriotic" populace.

Such cries have always been a gambit to distract and gain power, just as they are here.

I have relatives who still believe that Rush and Hannity are news programs and that Fox is fair and balanced. When you get hit with the same message over and over from the same messenger and your mind is either locked by religious fundamentalism, racism or the inability to accept that the party you subscribe to is the only choice( this goes for both Dems and Reps) you will drink the Kool-Aid. At least, Obama has been on the high road. I do not always agree with him, but at least he has kept it pretty clean and his attacks have been based on policy. As an earlier post mentioned, things could get ugly. They are already ugly. The church shooting in Knoxville, voter purging, intimidation, threats, McCarthyism with lipstick.. I could go on. I think America is sick, despite all the good that does exist. Take my comments out of context and I could be labeled anti-american. It is all a pathetic game and it is quite sad.

because I called Michelle Bachman the "b" word? Wow.

I won't apologize for saying that about someone who sits in the House of Representatives and has the nerve to call Democrats in Congress "Un-American!" Not the "b" word, or the "crazy" word that preceded it. I thought it was quite accurate.

WTF?
