Take Your Southern Strategy And Shove It

McCain and Palin's scurrilous and inciteful attacks may still play in modern-day Alabama, but they don't play outside the south.

According to Research 2000, Barack Obama has a 13% national-poll lead on John McCain. According to SurveyUSA, John McCain has a 27% lead in Alabama. George Wallace used to be the governor of Alabama. Here is what George Wallace did to John Lewis:

Lewis put his life on the line at several of the best-known battlegrounds in the modern African American struggle for equal rights. He was arrested numerous times for acting on his beliefs. Lewis was one of a small group of men and women who protested the segregation of interstate bus terminals in 1961 by traveling in integrated groups through the South. These Freedom Rides attracted national attention. When Lewis and others were attacked by white segregationists at a bus station in Montgomery, Alabama, they made national headlines and publicized the plight of blacks under a racially segregated social order.

Here is a pictorial representation of what George Wallace did to John Lewis. Jim Zwerg is checking how many teeth he has left.

You can read about what George Wallace did to Jim Zwerg here, and you should never forget what John Lewis and Jim Zwerg did for justice and human rights. There should be statues commemorating their efforts in every town square, because they are the living embodiment of human courage and righteousness. So, when John McCain says that John Lewis is one of his personal heroes, that is a point in John McCain's favor. But when John Lewis warns John McCain that:

Wallace "never fired a gun," Lewis added, "but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed. . . . Senator McCain and Governor Palin are playing with fire, and if they are not careful, that fire will consume us all."

...he knows what he's talking about. McCain and Palin's scurrilous and inciteful attacks may still play in modern-day Alabama, but they don't play outside the south. Again, let's look at the Research 2000 poll:

    McCAIN/OBAMA

NORTHEAST 28 65

SOUTH 53 41

MIDWEST 38 55

WEST 39 53

It looks to me like the Southern Strategy has evolved to the point that it is a strictly southern strategy, with no salience outside of that region. I don't want to pick on the South, but the numbers tell a story. The rest of the country has moved on past the politics of Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay. On November 4th, the country with ratify the official end of successful George Wallace politics ... whether Alabama likes it, or not.

John McCain might take Alabama, but will lose Florida. Most of us are sick of the hateful rhetoric and failed ideas championed by the Republicans.

Didn't Wallace repent?

I seem to recall Wallace became a "born again" Christian after the assassination attempt and subsequently apologizes for his previous segregation policies and appointed several black people into senior posts with his administration. I'm no apologist but I'd have thought this was at least worth a mention. No?

Southern Strategy

I have lived in the deep south many years of my life, as well as having lived in the great frozen north west, "liberal" california, florida which to my reconing is more eastern seaboard-educated, northeast dominated than southern, and the state of texas from amarillo to corpus christi. Guess what? I found bigotry in each area. In Wyoming it was bigotry against native americans...so heavy and obvious that it hurt my eyes and heart to witness. In california, it was bigotry against blacks, asains and anyone south of the border. in texas, strangely, it was a mix. Corpus Christi, being largely hispanic, is latinos who are hugely prejudiced against whites AND blacks (just try to get a job there if you're not latino), in the amarillo area, they don't much care for oklahomans. Point is, people are all afraid of "difference." I have spent time in Philly, hugely amazed at the hatred between black and white. New York, where every neighborhood is different and prejudiced against the neighborhood to either side. PR against jew, jew against irish. Boston, another bastion of "liberal" thought...where blacks, irish, whites and jews don't thrive together as neighbors. SO....don't talk so much about "southern strategy" as something exclusive to america...it is simply a code-word for racism that can be applied to any region of the country. It is not as though the republican campaign isn't getting their point across nationwide over the television and radio networks that Obama has brown skin. Fox plays nation-wide as does Rush Limbaugh and others who spew divisiveness, fear and hate. The whole thing is stomach churning. Thing is, thankfully, many more people are tolerant of "difference" than they were forty years ago, when the US had its own 'apartheid.' I personally don't give a rat's hiney what gender or color the president or for that matter, any elected official is, so long as they do the job they are elected to do...uphold the constitution of the united states and represent WE The People and not some huge corporation.

It isn't a southern strategy...it's a sunday morning christian church strategy. if your pastor tells you week after week that God wants you to vote for the self righteous McCain/Palin ticket, you use your "Faith" to justify your prejudice. Seperation of church and state?? Absolutely not...it's a fantasy. If you are an active Christian, you are being indoctrinated week after week, and so many of the kindly christian folk become the uninformed and bigoted citizenary of this pathetic election. You can place the blame on a country divided directly at the feet of Sunday morning fanaticism.

America's Values Went South

Beginning with Ronald Reagan, GOP values went South. Southern white racists held their noses and flocked to the Republican Party, and the “Party of Lincoln” purged itself of the last remaining bits of Lincoln’s DNA.

Beginning with Reagan and continuing through Bush II, the American Dollar became the Confederate Dollar.

The GOP established huge rigged casinos, with the winnings going to the “lucky” few — the GOP’s constituency of the Super Rich and huge corporations — and with the losses, countless trillions of dollars, being shouldered by U.S. taxpayers.

No level playing field existed with respect to any of the humongous financial disasters of the last three decades. From the S&L scandals and bailouts of the 1980s, to government contracting fraud in Iraq, to the recent financial meltdown, rigged structures are plainly visible.

The 401(k) became the 201(k).

As a gift and resource to the millions of American patriots who are now working hard to take back their democracy and government, I now offer FREE downloads of my ENTIRE new progressive book at www.bushleagueofnations.com.

My book is: “The Bush League of Nations: The Coalition of the Unwilling, the Bullied and the Bribed – the GOP’s War on Iraq and America,” by James A. Swanson (2008, published by CreateSpace Publishing, 448 pages).

See in particular Chapter 12, "The GOP's Bankruptcy of America — Living from Grandchild's Paycheck to Grandchild's Paycheck."

When John McCain and the GOP talk about “reform” and use wonderful words like “freedom,” “privatization,” and “deregulation” — and, during the last three weeks, “regulation!” — be sure to count your fingers.

When you have the worst economic situation

to face this country since the Great Depression, this lowest-common-denominator-idiocy of the so-called "Southern Strategy" that the McStain/Palin ticket is using WON'T WORK!

They won't win because of the Republic World-View which looks at low-to-middle income people in this country as no better than common cockroaches. They have NO RESPECT for the average American.

It's precisely because of their promotion and dogmatic belief in "Social Darwinism" that has put them in this no-win situation. People can smell "Phoney" a mile away, and especially when it comes to their lack of empathy toward people who are honestly hurting economically in this country.

They deserve to LOSE.
