Palin: Another Sociopath

Isn't it odd how Sarah Palin never talks about the future?

A number of people noticed how, at her debate with Joe Biden the other night, Sarah Palin didn't so much as gaze over at Biden with a look of feigned sympathy when Biden alluded to his own sons' stay in the hospital after the death of his wife and daughter soon after his election to the Senate. Hilzoy wrote about it here. Nice Greek Boy wrote about it too. Simple human decency and kindness warranted some kind of a response. You can bet that if Sarah Palin was recounting a personal tragedy, however obliquely, Biden would have found something comforting to say.

The more I watch Tina Fey play Sarah Palin, the more I begin to realize that no matter how spot-on Fey is, she never really quite captures the cold, hard core at the center of Sarah Palin. Because Fey has a warmth, a light in her eyes that Sarah Palin just doesn't have.

Dr. Sam Vaknin, author of Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited, describes pathological narcissism as:

a pattern of thinking and behaving in adolescence and adulthood, which involves infatuation and obsession with one's self to the exclusion of others. It manifests in the chronic pursuit of personal gratification and attention (narcissistic supply), in social dominance and personal ambition, bragging, insensitivity to others, lack of empathy and/or excessive dependence on others to meet his/her responsibilities in daily living and thinking.

Palin's bizarre non-response to Biden's indirect reference to his own experience was jarring coming from someone who presents herself as a paragon of apple pie and American motherhood.

It's always treacherous, especially these days, to ascribe nefarious motives to a woman's ambition, motives that are not questioned when they are attributed to a man. Frank Rich wrote about this ambition today:

But there’s a steady unnerving undertone to Palin’s utterances, a consistent message of hubristic self-confidence and hyper-ambition. She wants to be president, she thinks she can be president, she thinks she will be president. And perhaps soon. She often sounds like someone who sees herself as half-a-heartbeat away from the presidency. Or who is seen that way by her own camp, the hard-right G.O.P. base that never liked McCain anyway and views him as, at best, a White House place holder.

This was first apparent when Palin extolled a “small town” vice president as a hero in her convention speech — and cited not one of the many Republican vice presidents who fit that bill but, bizarrely, Harry Truman, a Democrat who succeeded a president who died in office. A few weeks later came Charlie Gibson’s question about whether she thought she was “experienced enough” and “ready” when McCain invited her to join his ticket. Palin replied that she didn’t “hesitate” and didn’t “even blink” — a response that seemed jarring for its lack of any human modesty, even false modesty.

In the last of her Couric interview installments on Thursday, Palin was asked which vice president had most impressed her, and after paying tribute to Geraldine Ferraro, she chose “George Bush Sr.” Her criterion: she most admires vice presidents “who have gone on to the presidency.” Hours later, at the debate, she offered a discordant contrast to Biden when asked by Gwen Ifill how they would each govern “if the worst happened” and the president died in office. After Biden spoke of somber continuity, Palin was weirdly flip and chipper, eager to say that as a “maverick” she’d go her own way.

But the debate’s most telling passage arrived when Biden welled up in recounting his days as a single father after his first wife and one of his children were killed in a car crash. Palin’s perky response — she immediately started selling McCain as a “consummate maverick” again — was as emotionally disconnected as Michael Dukakis’s notoriously cerebral answer to the hypothetical 1988 debate question about his wife being “raped and murdered.” If, as some feel, Obama is cool, Palin is ice cold. She didn’t even acknowledge Biden’s devastating personal history.

After the debate, Republicans who had been bailing on Palin rushed back to the fold. They know her relentless ambition is the only hope for saving a ticket headed by a warrior who is out of juice and out of ideas. So what if she is preposterously unprepared to run the country in the midst of its greatest economic crisis in 70 years? She looks and sounds like a winner.

I'm quite sure that the Usual Suspects on both the right and the left will be shrieking about Rich's sexism in painting her ambition as being sexist and part of a double standard.

But there's something about Palin's speeches and interviews that I've found unnerving, and this morning I finally realized what it is.

She never, ever talks about the future.

Ever.

One would think that the mother of four children, including an infant, and the soon-to-be-grandmother of another infant, would use her "hockey mom" persona to frame her ticket's agenda as creating a better world for her children. Barack Obama does it when he talks about his daughters. Joe Biden does it when he talks about his grandchildren. Even Hillary Clinton, a woman who Sarah Palin makes look like Mamie Eisenhower by comparison, did it. Sarah Palin doesn't. And I think I know why.

It's because Sarah Palin doesn't believe there is a future.

Philip Munger at Progressive Alaska recounts a conversation he had with Palin in 1977:
In June 1997, both Palin and I had responsibilities at the graduation ceremony of a small group of Wasilla area home schoolers. I directed the Mat-Su College Community Band, which played music, and she gave the commencement address. It was held at her church, the Wasilla Assembly of God.

Palin had recently become Wasilla mayor, beating her earliest mentor, John Stein, the then-incumbent mayor. A large part of her campaign had been to enlist fundamentalist Christian groups, and invoke evangelical buzzwords into her talks and literature.

As the ceremony concluded, I bumped into her in a hall away from other people. I congratulated her on her victory, and took her aside to ask about her faith. Among other things, she declared that she was a young earth creationist, accepting both that the world was about 6,000-plus years old, and that humans and dinosaurs walked the earth at the same time.

I asked how she felt about the second coming and the end times. She responded that she fully believed that the signs of Jesus returning soon "during MY lifetime," were obvious. "I can see that, maybe you can't - but it guides me every day."

Our next discussion about religion was after she had switched to the less strict Wasilla Bible Church. She was speaking at, I was performing bugle, at a Veterans ceremony between Wasilla and Palmer. At this time, people were beginning to encourage her to run for Governor.

Once again, we found ourselves being able to talk privately. I reminded her of the earlier conversation, asking her if her views had changed. She was no longer "necessarily" a young earth creationist, she told me. But she strongly reiterated her belief that "The Lord is coming soon." I was trying to get her to tell me what she felt the signs were, when she had to move on.

Think of the cold, dead look in Sarah Palin's eyes. Think of her bizarre non-response to Joe Biden's tragedy. Now watch about 4:15 into this video:

...when Palin says about Biden's current wife, "I know you're passionate about education, with your wife being a teacher for thirty years, and God bless her, her reward is in heaven, right?"

Go back and watch this video again. Then think about how a mother of four never once on the stump talks about her children's future.

Now imagine that John McCain is elected and dies of a stroke while in office. And this woman now has the nuclear codes.

Then ask yourself, and your friends, just how important a passing acquaintance with William Ayers is when the alternative is a pathological narcissist who's also a believer in the Left Behind model of the apocalypse.

Digg!

Sarah Palin admires Dick Cheney and wants to be a VP just like him.

She said during the debate that, as far as the US Constitution is concerned, VP's "have a lot of flexibility in there".
Palin is, as she said, "thankful that the Constitution would allow a bit more authority given to the vice president also, if that vice president so chose to exert it."

All of Cheney's evil fascism, and all of Bush's stupidity.

Maybe she is CORRECT about this being the End Times. You see, the Anti-Christ is already among us, it seems.

This issue of psychopaths ruling the world, sociopaths being one kind of psychopath, is critical. We license drivers, teachers, doctors...public servants should also be licensed using criteria like capacity for empathy and forward thinking as part of the equation.

I recently wrote a paper about this. http://www.healingmagic.org/articles/Narcissism.pdf

The person writing the article is not really named "Hussein". Adding "Hussein" to your name, usually in place of your middle name, is currently all the rage on the liberal blogosphere and forums as a way to show support for Barack Obama and play down the right wing rhetoric about Barack's middle name being Hussein.

Sarah Palin is Bush in a skirt . Proudly UNIFORMED , Totally INCURIOUS but Supremly Confident and outrageously Ambitious . Ignorant and arogant is a dangerous combination or so we should have learned by NOW . Her Bushlike Personalty appears in her surrounding herself with cronies and yesmen and her purging of those not deemed loyal in spite of their Competance . She detests any oversight and will go to any means to avoid it .Including refusing to comply with Supeanas and using Non Govermental email accounts to avoid Freedom of Imformation requests and Legislative Inquiries. Let's NOT forget that she at FIRST said she welcomed the investigation into Troopergate and would cooperate FULLY .
One could NOT help but notice the total lack of Empathy when Biden teared up remembering his own personal tragedy .

I was a subscriber to Sam Vaknin's Yahoo group, narcissisticabuse, up until earlier this week when he sent an article by an Ali Sina about how Senator Obama is a narcissist, which cites Vaknin's own article on the same topic.

http://tinyurl.com/4svb4b

http://tinyurl.com/3lgecn

This Ali Sina person has also recently written a nutty fear piece on Obama titled "Understanding Obama: The Makings Of A Fuehrer", which also cites Vaknin.

http://tinyurl.com/48rhkd

Vaknin is on board with the paranoid kooks spreading indefensible smears against Senator Obama. any credbility he may have had is now at least suspect, if not completely blown.

It's not too far a stretch to construe the "Government is the problem" as the crime of sedition. The Smith Act is still on the books. I say we start a grassroots movement to have her indicted for sedition. Palin is the Problem! Sedition is the Crime! Use the Smith Act! Arrest the Pit Bull Now!
Government isn't the solution to everything, but the Constitution is there to protect the rights of the poor and weak from being abused by the rich and powerful. People who think Government is the problem shouldn't be running the government.

Beware Sarah Palin
Posted by: sheena2u on Oct 6, 2008 6:52 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
This article touched on a very important point. Palin believes we are in End Times. There is no need to think of sustainable living, renewable energy, conservation of wildlife, our natural resources, our children's future, or the kind of world our grandchildren will inherit if she believes the end is near, and will probably come in our lifetimes.

Palin is all about exploiting resources, raping the land and the sea, taking and taking and forget about the future or the mess that is left behind. Those attitudes make sense if what she believes is that there will be no tomorrow. And, apparently that is what she believes! Dare we put our tomorrows in the hands of a woman who is careless and devil-may-care about our futures, and the futures of our families because she believes these are End Times so anything goes?

She can't accept responsibility for anything. Climate crisis came about because of natural cycles according to her. She didn't mess up her interviews, but she got "gotcha" questions. What is "gotcha" about what news sources do you regularly read? With her there is an excuse for everything, and the world is made up of "good guys" like Joe Sixpack I suppose, and "bad guys" who say mean things about Israel, and she is morally at liberty to take whatever action is necessary against those "bad guys" in her world. How is having this woman running for V.P. not an insult and a danger to Americans everywhere?

And, now today I heard she said that "there is a special place in Hell for women who don't support other women." The implication, I suppose is that there is a special place in Hell for the women who don't support her! What cheek! What hypocrisy coming from a woman who is against equal pay for women, against choice, and thinks all real women are hockey or soccer moms and to Hell with the rest of the female gender.

Please, people, see this woman for what she is a consummate phoney, a manipulator, and a woman who would even exploit herself, her daughter, or her downs syndrome baby to achieve her blind ambition. She is not folksy, sweet, cute, or real. Its all a phoney act. At least the cutesy stuff was charming on little five-year-old Shirley Temple back in the 1930's, but is certainly isn't seemly or attractive on a middle aged mother of five who is running for Vice President of the United States.

She would be worse than Cheney and Bush put together if she ever got near the White House! She has a bizarre worldview, and is in no way qualified to be the Vice President. If this choice of V.P. is supposed to be an example of John McCain's judgment, it is lacking and it is dangerously misguided.

I have been pleading with someone from the evangelical community to be the lead person on exposing the dangerous religious connections that Palin has established over the years. If the information is promoted from outside the faith community, it will be rejected as simple anti-Christian propaganda. The issues referred to here are the very little tip of the iceberg. May I encourage YOU to do the research work so that you are comfortable with the reliability of the information. Google up Christian Dominionist and learn about this growing movement, the different forms it takes, etc. Then you might Google "Joel's Army". Then start following the names, etc. on a string that goes back very directly to Palin's church home in Wasilla.
One manifestation of the belief specifically referred to in this article, that being the immediateness of the return of Christ is that belief makes very logical the lack of concern regarding environmental issues. Why bother? So what if global warming is real and might well destroy life as we know it in a hundred years. If Jesus is coming in 10 years, it all becomes irrelevant, doesn't it? And as one of the core beliefs of all branches of the Christian Dominionist movement is that they are to have dominion over all of the earth (use it as they please)...it can lead to some pretty devastating consequences, at least from my humble point of view. Now go research!

So maybe she is qualified. To expect someone like Palin to care about Joe Biden or anyone else is wishful thinking. She is all about Sarah and doesn't care much about her own children. It's the same old story: like waiting for Bush to realize what a mean bast--d
he is. Aint' gonna happen. Some people do not have a conscience and they do not change. The way she appeals to so many women troubles me. Do they really want to be like Sarah? I hope not. It's true that now and again it's necessary to get tough and hold your own, but that's not the same as being a selfish mean spirited woman all the time. Despite her good looks I can't picture Sarah Palin "having a good time". I don't believe she's capable of having fun unless it's at someone else's expense. She probably has so many enemies that she can't let her guard down and enjoy herself. What a way to live. I do wish that the women who appear to worship her would snap out of it and realize that they're living vicariously through Sarah Palin and that it's temporary. We can't have this woman in a position to run our country. She has no concept of the "common good". The Joe Six Pack is getting old and I find it very condescending and patronizing. Lot's of good people have a cold one at the end to the day. She should also stop "tolerating" so many people. That too, is patronizing and insulting and points to define herself as superior. Well, the lady is on a roll and I hope that she self destructs. She is quick with accusations and she may well do serious damage. At some point she can't be forgiven or excused. The cute and folksy act is over. She's in the fight and should be taken on.

Thank you so much Waynep for stressing exactly what Sarah Palin and her church promotes and believes about the End Times and how Alaska will be the last refuge for the world. It's unbelieveable to me the power of words that people fall prey to, no different than a cult following in my opinion. It's nothing but a masterful manipulation and brain washing especially of our children, to the point of being willing to die and give up your life for that cause, this War for God. No different than any radical terrorist in my opinion.

Not only check out JOEL'S ARMY which is prophesied to become an Armageddon-ready MILITARY force of young people with a divine mandate to PHYSICALLY impose Christian dominion on all non-believers, but even more, especially check out that MASTERS COMMISSION that Sarah mentions in her own speech to the Wasilla church just 9 or 10 months ago (google it on Youtube) and see how the brainwashing of our children is so easily accomplished.

This Masters Commission provides an intensive nine-month to a year discipleship program with children with a one-on-one mentorship and encouragement to pursue the throne room of God for the END TIMES. Ignoring the Biblical injunction "No man knoweth the hour of My coming" NO MAN... and many throughout history have tried to foretell it and been wrong, some have committed suicide believing that.

It's nothing but dealing with that 'fear' factor once again!! It is unbelieveable to me the power that religion can hold sway over a person! Words sway, words distort, words convince and foolishly people listen and believe with no will of their own as these young people follow these foolish supposedly 'all-knowing' human leaders. Again I say no different than a 'cult'. Please please do your own research! Do not let a pretty face or smile fool you. Indeed the title of the article "Palin another Sociopath" aptly fits.

It's time for the campaign to send Hillary on an Alaskan mission to expose the abuse of power by SP. The McCain campaign sent its crew up there to block the investigation and now we're back to ignoring supenas and refusing to testify. This is more of Bush/Cheney style of government. Doesn't talk about history or its importance to what we are and where we're likely headed because she doesn't know doodley-squat about history, including the Supreme Court ruling against Exxon in her own home state. She's hardly unique in this regard as Joe Six Pack is the same way. The difference is that ol' Beer Gut isn't running for Vice President and she is. What a bloody mess we've created for ourselves with our distain for intellectual excellence and neglect of our schools! Points well-taken. I have little doubt that this person was forced upon McCain-so much for who's in-charge and leadership-by the far right corporate-religionists, particularly in view of Karl Rove's-who should be out of politics and in prison, but isn't either-role in the process.

This country is an exceeding amount of trouble as a result of electing one dumbwad figurehead president, so obviously the logic seems to be lets get another one in any way possible?

Palin is a chipmunk. Literally. Ask any question and the answer is: "I am a maverick," maverick being an utterly meaningless term. Elect these people and it's over.

She was just trying to remember what she was told to say. Absolutely every response she gave in the debate was totally rehearsed. No one told her what to say in response to Biden's tragedy. Which is worse- being totally stupid or mean?

Sarah...Can you feel it? That fatal sinking feeling? It's over slimewoman. You've stepped into the quicksand of reality, and there is no way out of it. I predict your defeat in the next election in Alaska, as well as your defeat in this hyper ambitious attempt to assume the Presidency of this country, after the potential demise of old quack McStain. So much for arrogant ambition, you betcha!!
