A List of McCain's Nastiest Moments

Think there's no way that John's actually that bad? You haven't seen this list.

Earlier today, a commenter asked if John McCain is "truly as nasty and belligerent as he appears to be." Is he really that bad--or is it just one of those partisan memes that develops about an opponent? I'm guessing he isn't the only Shaker with that question, and, since detailing McCain's long list of objectionable qualities has been what one might call a specialty of mine since the inception of this blog back in '04, I figured I'd put together a little collection of Punk McNasty's Greatest Hits to answer that question and for handy-dandy reference.

Accusing the Democrats of being sore losers and obstructionists motivated by partisan "bitterness" just because they had the temerity to not treat Condoleezza Rice's confirmation as Secretary of State as "a foregone conclusion."

Accusing Vietnam veteran and Congressman Jack Murtha of being "too emotional" to be rational about the war.

Sending then-freshman Senator Barack Obama what Matt Stoller called "remarkable" and one of "the single most bitter, nasty letters I have ever seen from any Senator."

Threatening to leave an appearance before the AFL-CIO's Building and Construction Trades Department because members of the audience challenged his statements on immigration, organized labor, and the war. He also questioned their work ethic and skills, telling them "You can't do it, my friends," when some accepted his hypothetical job offer of $50 an hour to pick lettuce in Arizona.

Threatening to commit suicide if the Democrats won a majority in the Senate.

Using the racially-charged and highly inappropriate term "tar baby."

Singing about bombing Iran:

Responding to criticisms of that hilarious little ditty by snapping: "Please, I was talking to some of my old veterans friends. My response is, lighten up and get a life," without, naturally, the merest glimmer of irony that he'd been casually joking about taking lives.

Telling Jon Stewart he'd brought him an IED from Iraq as a gift:

Responding to Congressman Murtha's criticism of that hilarious joke with: "All I'm going to say to Murtha and others. ... Lighten up and get a life," to which Atrios said what ought to have been obvious to any halfwit but eluded the evidently witless McCain: "The point is that dead troops and other victims are no longer capable of getting 'a life'."

Erupting at fellow Republican Senator John Cornyn in a meeting about immigration legislation, during which McCain accused Cornyn of raising a concern just to torpedo a legislative deal, "used a curse word associated with chickens," and shouted "[Expletive] you! I know more about this than anyone else in the room!"

Responding to one of his supporters asking of Hillary Clinton, "How do we beat the bitch?" by laughing:

Saying he hoped Fidel Castro would die.

• Reportedly calling his own wife a cunt.

Shoving one of his Republican colleagues and repeatedly calling another "boy."

Telling women to get "education and training" instead of fighting for equal pay in the legislature.

Joking about his reputation as "Senator Hothead."

Calling Obama's response to Bush's outrageous suggestion that Obama wants to appease terrorists a "hysterical diatribe." (Got that? Bush calling Obama a terrorist sympathizer isn't a hysterical diatribe; Obama defending himself against the charge is.)

Joking about domestic violence.

Joking about exporting cigarettes to kill Iranians.

Joking about rape.

Asserting that Obama "would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign."

Being a ginormous misogybag.

Challenging Obama's patriotism.

Behaving like a rude jagoff to reporters. (One example of about 10 different posts I've written on the same theme.)

So, if you're keeping score at home: He can't get along with his colleagues, even the ones on his own side of the aisle, he flies off the handle when he doesn't get his way, he's hostile toward anyone who disagrees with him, he has no seeming objection to the casual use of sexist and racist language, and he makes highly inappropriate jokes about rape and violence against women and war and death, including the murder of TV hosts and deaths of foreign leaders.

That probably describes a hell of a lot of people, including--perhaps, especially--bloggers. But those people aren't running for president. John McCain is. Is that the kind of person we really want leading our country? Is that the kind of person who we want as our head of government, no less our head of state?

There are a lot of scary things about the possibility of a President McCain, like the fact that he's a warmonger, just for a start. Among them, if not at the top of the list, is this: Sending McCain onto the global stage to be our national representative could make this...

...a fond memory of the days when we had a president who merely creeped out foreign dignitaries by being a douche, but at least never screamed, "Fuck you, cocksucker!" at them.

Fellow Alterians: Click the link in Melissa's third example, i.e. 'sending' as in:

SENDING then-freshman Senator Barack Obama what Matt Stoller called "remarkable" and one of "the single most bitter, nasty letters I have ever seen from any Senator."

There you'll find a copy of that priceless photo of mccain hugging (I almost said 'humping') bush as if he'd finally met God, while the deluded 'leader' looks off in the distance, seemingly thinking "Well of course he worships me; how could he not?"

My question to Alternet or any of you is how can we get this photo included in our posts. Personally I'd love to preface everything I write until November 5th with this wonderful reminder of just what kind of person mccain really is.

Any ideas?

McCain suffers from repressed guilt and suppressed rage and if he captures the White House his power as President will unleash those emotions at the first opportunity = World War Three.

we are seeing more and more of the "REAL" McStain. He's one pissed off senior citizen! There is no way he can win the White House. People are seeing him for who is really is.

Stupid is one thing... we've seen the results of that over the past eight years. But stupid and angry... he's more like Dick Cheney than Bush, which should TERRIFY people!

I believe McStain will publicly have a serious melt-down before the election, perhaps at a future debate, which will cement this picture of him in voters' minds.

John McStain won't be our president.

When I saw the bunch of losers that the GOP fielded this time, I figured they already knew they were going to lose regardless.

McSame is running this year 'cuz he knows that he'll be far too old in four year's time. It's his last chance.

It's sad that so many delusional people will always vote for whoever the GOP endorses. Perhaps the well-timed mortgage crisis will finally penetrate their thick skulls...

"In his book The Real McCain, author Cliff Schecter claims that John McCain made extremely ugly remarks about his wife Cindy McCain during a tirade witnessed by three reporters and two aides. "At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, 'You're getting a little thin up there,'" Schechter writes. "McCain's face reddened, and he responded, 'At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you C*NT.'"

There has been no indication that McCain has an ounce of compasssion or empathy for any human being. That is dangerously combined with a hair trigger temper. I consider him a functional sociopath who has been fleet-footed enough to escape detection and consequences.

Unfit for command: Songbird McCain & his maverick code of conduct
Posted by: NoMcCainPalin on Oct 6, 2008 1:05 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
McCain has been following a special set of rules in life best described as the "maverick code of conduct." By doing so, he has proven himself numerous times to be a traitor, which Webster defines as "someone who betrays his country, cause or friends."

At the U.S. Naval Academy, facing a choice of following regulations or not, he willfully violated them in a show of utter contempt for and betrayal of the U.S. government, which paid for his education.

Said Academy graduate Phillip Butler, ex-Navy pilot and former POW who spent eight years in North Vietnamese captivity: "John was intent on breaking every regulation (at the Academy)...and [yet] he unbelievably managed to graduate though he spent the majority of his first class year on restriction for the stuff he got caught doing. In fact he barely managed to graduate, standing 5th from the bottom of his 800-man class."

Butler also said, "I can verify that John has an infamous reputation for being a hot head. He has a quick and explosive temper that many have experienced firsthand. Folks, quite honestly, that is not the finger I want next to the red button."

In 1970, while a POW after being shot down over North Vietnam, when he no longer being physically abused by his captors, he agreed to be interviewed by Cuban journalist Fernando Barral.

McCain could have refused the interview. Instead, not only did he meet with Barral who exploited the occasion for propaganda purposes, McCain voluntarily conversed in Spanish and accepted special favors from the enemy -- hot coffee and cigarettes -- all blatant violations of the Code of Conduct for U.S. prisoners of war.

Afterwards, the Hanoi Hilton's U.S. commander, SRO Jeremiah Denton, issued an order forbidding POWs to be interviewed by visitors. Said McCain on page 305 of of his 1999 autobiography, Faith of My Fathers, “[Denton's] decision was a sound one, even though it deprived me of further opportunities to demonstrate my psychic equilibrium… not to mention the [loss of] extra cigarettes and coffee."

Because McCain also agreed to make propaganda radio broadcasts, his captors contemptuously nicknamed him "Songbird."

After returning home in 1973 to his faithful, physically disabled wife who'd spent nearly every waking hour trying to make life easier for him in Hanoi, he betrayed their wedding vows by committing adultery before divorcing her to marry the "other" woman.

As a senator, McCain betrayed his Arizona constituents by involving himself in the 1989 S&L scandal known as the "Keating Five." Despite the adverse publicity, he continued to be treasonously chummy with lobbyists and special interest groups for the rest of his political career.

In 1992, while serving on the Senate Select Committee for POW/MIAs affairs, McCain betrayed the families of U.S. airmen missing in Southeast Asia by prematurely shutting down the investigation and sealing the DOD records of all MIAs and POWs. Not coincidentally, the sealed records included his own which reportedly contained damning information about Songbird's collaborations with the enemy.

But John McCain's worst act of treason was picking Sarah Palin for his running mate -- a decision based on winning votes instead of who was best qualified to be a heartbeat-away commander-in-chief. Because he put politics ahead of national security, despite his campaign slogan, "Country First," Songbird McCain betrayed the American people, making him unfit to serve as president of the United States.

We go from a president who's dumber than dogshit to one who is crazy as a bed bug. Can you even imagine how the right wing would have reacted had Barack Obama referred to his wife (as John McCain did to Cindy) as "a cunt"? That really happened. The double standards are truly eye-popping!

Can there be any doubt that this election is the most important one in our lives? If McCain and Unable are elected next month, we all might as well pack our bags and get the heck out of dodge.

And Palin is no better!
Posted by: LeeAnnG on Oct 6, 2008 5:58 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I caught her diatribe this morning about how Obama had coffee with Bill Ayers. She actually said (paraphrased because I don't remember the exact words, but very close) "Obama does not love his country the way you and I love our country." That was along with remarks about how he "hangs around with" people whose opinion of America is so low they want to perform terrorist acts against our people.

Wow! Compared to that, McCain is almost nice! Funny how Obama's meeting with Ayers happened seven years ago, but during the VP debates, she chastised Biden with, "There you go again, back to the past" several times when he compared McCain to the Bush administration.

And, of course, there was no mention of how her husband belongs to the Alaskan seccessionist movement whose leader commented that there's nothing he hates more than the American government. But hypocrisy has always been a strong characteristic of certain Republican wingnut types.

There may be nothing uglier than questioning a person's patriotism, especially someone who is running for office. I am appalled that the corporate media is not challenging this kind of slander.

Palin is a real piece of work. There's an underlying viciousness about her that's very, very disturbing.

On September 2 2008 guardian.co.uk said that "a decade ago" at an Arizona fundraiser John McCain told this joke: "Q: Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? A: Because her father is Janet Reno." Thus, a trifecta of tasteless jokes since all-in-one McCain insults the appearance of a young girl then in her teens, implies that both Hillary Clinton and Janet Reno are lesbians, and suggests that our first woman Attorney General is actually a man.

McShame not only has the symptoms of PTSD, but I suspect that he is suffering the early effects of dementia! That he is a reckless hot-head, just goes to prove another spoiled baby in the White House is not what is necessary! Haven't we had enough of the "bring it on cowboy attitude" of the last 8 years! If nothing else, can we feel some kind of compassion for the rest of the world leaders that have also suffered over these years with us!

At least those leaders have their own countries to return to! Besides, a McShame/Paleface Presidency - will make the last 8 years with a dim-witted Bush, and a belligerent Chaney along with their incompetent crony-ism, feel like a walk in the park!

McCain on Iraq

There was another prime McCain moment back in early 2003 in the run-up to the Iraq war, and there's video if you can dig it out of the C-Span archives. We were still trying to get the French and Germans to go along with a second UN resolution, and McCain was addressing a meeting on the necessity of attacking Iraq without delay. The French and German representatives were in the audience and McCain spoke to them directly in a very offensive and insulting manner. I was shocked, and it takes a lot to shock me. I must admit though that he did then seem in control, just .. extremely undiplomatic.

His Voting Record Is All We Need

The meanness of "the Maverick" is easily evidenced not in all his little juvenile antics, but in his voting record:

When was the last time he voted for regulations that might have made our current financial fiasco manageable? Never.

When was the last time he voted to help his fellow veterans? Rarely, if ever.

When was the last time he voted against going to war? Rarely.

When was the last time he voted against a military expenditure, weapons systems to nowhere? Never.

He's a pathetically mean and nasty man and not only do his juvenile behaviors indicate it, but his voting record confirms it.

Bush/McCain personal influences

I've noticed that both Bush and McCain have a lot in common as far as the influences that shaped them as they were growing up. Both are the product of several generations of accomplished fathers and are bsically nothings themselves. They both have problems with partying, learning, succeeding and the rest that define successful people in our society, but whenever they screwed up, their daddies or their daddies' friends got them out of trouble. Their major motivation is to prove to their fathers that they are not useless jerks even though deep in their hearts they have to realize that they are losers. Neither of them has what one would call a happy family life. Both of them, at least in private (Bush) and increasingly in public (McCain), are hateful bullies who are completely unable to accept constructive criticism or even an argument. Both of them depended in their formative years on the ability to be hail-fellow-well-met types to manage to slither by in their academic careers, along with their fathers' influence. Neither of them has much in the way of moral principles when it comes to getting whatever it is they want. For both of them, the only people that matter are what Quayle used to call the "best people," the rich who can do things for them. Both of them are so self-centered that it seems, at times, to verge into psychopathology.

The list can go on, but what it all adds up to is that our country cannot afford to go through anymore of what we have been suffering these last eight years.

• Threatening to commit suicide if the Democrats won a majority in the Senate.

The worst one: not following through on promises.

He has to hate women, that is why he he accepted Palin as a running mate. He left his crippled wife who was hospitalized from a car accident to scant around with his present wife Cindy McCain. He owns more than nine homes. He spends more than $250,000 a year on dinners, trips, clothes, (financial records revealed that) so he has no clue what middle class is or working class, nor cares. And recently, I read that by accident, he made some serious fatal blunders while in Vietnam. And then there are the Keatering 5 Scandals-- being under Federal investigation for wrong doing and money laundering. His friend was indicted and did go to prison for this. So what in the hell are we talking about... ??? Not to mention the man is in ill health. I never saw so much sweating during the last debate. He is a hot head, and I am looking forward to seeing more sweating on Tuesday night's debate. He is totally wrong. I have no respect for him and even less for Palin. And now the bits and pieces stating he called his wife a cunt and the disparaging remarks he did state about Hillary Clinton's daughter... unbelievable. He is JOE SIX PACK with too many money, let's not give him power to rule as well. STOP THE MADNESS!!!

Not to mention the man is in ill health, leaving Palin close to the Nuclear Numbers and the Red Phone. That is just plain scary as hell!!!

McCain sweated like a PIG in the last debate. The whole side of his left check, in sweat. He is too OLD FOLKS!!! He is a hot head, and I am looking forward to seeing more sweating on Tuesday night's debate. He is totally wrong for this nation. He is a loose cannon, and Palin is the cannon ball.

I have no respect for him and even less for Palin. And now the bits and pieces that he actually in a fit of rage in public called his wife a "cunt", and the FACT that he did make disparaging remarks about Hillary Clinton's daughter...is unbelievable, and unacceptable!!!

McCain is JOE SIX PACK with too MUCH money,PLEASE LET'S NOT GIVE HIM POWER TO RULE AS WELL. STOP THE MADNESS!!!

McCAIN MOMENT

There are the nasty, hissy-fit moments and, then, there are the scary, indecisive moments. McCain was asked by the press about the issue of insurance companies covering Viagra and not birth control, whereupon he develops amnesia. The YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q8obHEULLg&feature=related. The "Straight Talk Express" derailed.

Google Keating Economics. It will be an eye opening 13 minutes of your time. I have voted before, but never before have I read, researched so much on both candidates. This man is wrong.

The facts are all there: McCain's 1st speech called for DE REGULATION. Now he claims he is for REGULATION/ bullsh*t!
Charles Keating was put in prison and served four years for looting his Investment Savings Company Lincoln Savings and Loan. Remember the S & L scandals? Well he also forked over $112, 000 to fund (3) three of McCain's campaigns. And This scandal cost eldrly folks and other tax payers 3.4 BILLION DOLLARS. Didn't we just handover $700 BILLION DOLLARS??? Sound familiar???McCain misused his position and power to assist in this action by his benefactor and friend Charles Keating. And he wants to talk about Obama and Tony Rezko, OBAMA was EIGHT (8) YEARS OLD when this guy was doing his so-called anti war speeches. The guy never swindled Americans out of Billions of dollars. Some elderly lost their life savings!!!!
McCain and Cindy McCain had direct ties to this man who was convicted of wrong doing, and went to prison. GIVE ME A FREAKN BREAK!!! I heard about the Keating five, but never took the time to READ AND RESEARCH IT MYSELF. Now that I have... there is no way in Heave or Hell that this man should get voted in to the white house!!!
I have also been researching his voting record on the Military. He doesn't care about them either. In 2007 he only voted on 4 out of 14 improvement bills for the military. That is SHAMEFUL!!!

HE voted NO on giving troops a rest period between
deployment.

HE voted NO to provide 1.8 Billion for SAFETY EQUIPMENT

HE voted NO on 1.2 Billion to increase Vetrans outpatient care.... To curtail CORPORATE LOOP HOLES... He VOTED NO!!! I have a big problem with that one!!

His response to the "Bitch" Comment and Hillary Clinton, was so unacceptable. He choice for a running mate, Palin, is unacceptable

His NINE homes, one which is 13 million dollars is unacceptable to me, and shows how out of touch he is with middle class and working class and that he DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THEM AT ALL!!!!
And his voting on the Troops should be SCRUTINIZED and I think it has been overlooked because he is supposed to be this war hero.
Well, you have some Veterans from Vietnam still living who have some strong comments about his military behavior. So what do you have???

(In the pasat I would just vote, never before have I read all that I can get my hands on, researched items on my own before an election, well I was forced to do so this time. TOO MUCH IS AT STAKE THIS TIME!!!)

An OLD ANGRY RACIST (who by the way voted against having MLK a national holiday) And man who spends money like water, ($250,000) yearly per his financial figures, on dinner parties, suits, and trips and importantly he is ruled and ran by lobby groups!!!! Nothing has he learned from the S & L (KEATING) situation. The man is wrong... Palin is wrong, and the ticket is WRONG!!!!!
He voted NO --- CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO... key in Keating Economics... watch 13 minutes of reality... and the real Insane McCain!!!

He voted NO on issues that are crucial to middle class, working class, and MILITARY FAMILIES!!! SO I VOTE NO ON HIM!!!!

Don't you folks get it yet? Don't you realize that whomever the Corporatocracy wants as president, that's who it will be? Take off your dollar-bill blinders and see that BM (Big Money) runs this country - always has, always will. And that BM is getting bigger by its latest manipulations. It's happened time and time again - pump up the market, rope the "little people" in (this time by offering pittance interest rates at the financial institutions so there's nowhere else to go), then crash the thing and buy things up for a song. This is the way they consolidate their power. And we the sheeple are so enamored of the buck we're too blind to see. Greed has been legitimized, and now the greedy will have their day once again.

The State Police are already in place to suppress the chaos. The Lear jets are sitting on the runway, ready to whisk the "winners" off to their bunkers, mountain chalets, island paradises, and ranches in Paraguay.

The only solution: declare a Technocracy, with a guaranteed share of the physical product of America for all. Depose the Money Masters by issuing "Energy Cards", entitling the holder to a guaranteed income. Cancel all financial transactions, forgive all debt. There are no political or financial solutions to our mess. We can't buy or legislate ourselves out of it - but we can engineer our way to prosperity. Investigate Technocracy before it's too late - if it isn't already.
