Sarah Palin Is a Better Debater than You Think

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 8:25 AM on October 1, 2008.

I've had a chance to watch a some of Palin's debate performances, and anyone hoping to see Palin embarrass herself is going to be very disappointed.

I was on a conference call over the weekend that the Obama campaign held for reporters, and someone brought up expectations for Thursday night's debate. The aides argued, without hesitation, that Sarah Palin excelled in her gubernatorial campaign debates, and they expect her to deliver "a great performance."

The comments probably drew a guffaw or two in some circles. There were low expectations for Palin when she was named to the ticket, but after the political world saw her fielding questions from Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric, Palin now has a distinct advantage -- no one could possibly do as poorly in this debate as political insiders expect her to do.

Indeed, at this point, if Palin shows up and speaks in complete sentences, I fully expect the media to lavish her with high praise.

It's probably too late to change those expectations, but I've had a chance to watch a fair amount of Palin's debate performances, and I have to say, anyone hoping to see Palin embarrass herself in St. Louis is going to be very disappointed.

The estimable Jed Lewison put together this clip collection, which helps show Palin's aptitude for the debate format. In fact, looking around the media today, there are plenty of reports about Palin's strength as a debater for any lingering skeptics.

The New York Times reports on her ability to exude confidence in a debate. The Politico talks about her "formidable" skills and her "big debate wins." The Los Angeles Times highlighted warnings about underestimating her debating skills. And the Wall Street Journal had an item about how impressive she is in this format.

It's worth noting, of course, that judging the strengths of a debater is a little tricky, and more than a little subjective. After watching quite a few clips from Alaska, I wouldn't say Palin is good at talking about policy details or making complex issues understandable, two qualities that might ordinarily be helpful in a debate.

But Palin excelled in different areas -- she evaded questions well, she filibustered effectively, and she'd prepared a series of superficial quips that seemed to connect with her audience. If she can do this again tomorrow, Palin will probably do just fine.

Digg!

It will be like the Bush low expectations debates all over again.

If Palin doesn't completely fail in the debate, it will be considered a victory by the mess media, even though she may lose on every issue. This is one big reason why we have politicians who are all show and no substance.

False Expectations

Good article. I do not have "low expectations" for Sara in tomorrow nights debate. I see her skills at manipulation. Only those paying attention and familiar with the issues will be aware of her gaffe's. And we will be in the minority - and few are those who will write their such observations to our points of view.

Palin's debate skill looks mediocre at best.

All due respect to the author, I don't see Palin as all that skilled in debate. It doesn't take much to shine when all around you is dull. Her arguments seemed like nothing more than political posturing against someone out of favor with the voters. She won't have that advantage tomorrow. Biden is going to challenge her heavily. In fact, my worst fear is that he'll make her look such a fool as to come off as "elitist" to the repubs.

She is faking the other stuff to fool people and make a lot of dumb conservatives to feel sympathy for her.

Is that a way to fool the people of America for the 3rd time?

Probably you are right. There is nothing that "conservatives" won't do to get what they want, money and power.

They completely lack a sense of truth and justice.

So, is there any way to win an argument with a consummate liar?

always presume ReichWingers are speaking TO THEM.

They aren't.

Behold the last McCain-Obama debate I witnessed from Austin, TX.
What did McCain do?

He repeated SIMPLE points.
He corrected his bullshit comment about firing the SEC, amending the statement to 'call for his resignation'...

then proceeded to repeat that **government is inherently corrupt** not the ReichWingers who cooked it up & ate it whole.

Then made vague statements about military & patriotism...

Meanwhile, Obama spoke intelligently & authoritatively. BUT THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT demographic who is beyond reach from that approach...

You presume everyone who votes is intelligent & informed.

... Some people call it a Kaiser blade, but I call it a slingblade... there is no intelligence test to vote... only a REPUBLICAN test of caging...

you can provide information, but that presumes:
-the audience is interested in integrity
-the audience will understand the difference.

listen to the debate, she is floundering in her round and round doubles speak. Repeating the same phrases over and over, feverishly checking her notes. I think she may drown in her own garbage tonight.

Steve Benen couldn't be MORE WRONG! She embarrassed herself more times than I can count! I expect more from AlterNet writers than this "low-expectations equals a good performance" crap! Come on, Mr. Benen!

Get Joshua Holland to re-write this!
