Palin is a Mess: More Ridiculousness from Couric Interview

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 1:02 PM on September 25, 2008.

This interview is so bad it is almost uncomfortable to watch.

Earlier, I suggested Sarah Palin's response to Kate Couric's question on the bailout was a low point in Palin's brief career as a candidate for national office. I spoke too soon.

As regular readers know, almost immediately after Palin was added to the Republican ticket, a number of conservatives, including McCain himself, argued Alaska's proximity to Russia necessarily amounts to foreign policy experience. I've been having some fun with this, because, well, it's the dumbest argument I've ever heard.

In the second part of the CBS interview with Palin, which will air tonight on the "CBS Evening News," Couric, to her enormous credit, asks Palin to explain what this talking point means (catch the video and the transcript after the flip):

COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?

PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land -- boundary that we have with -- Canada. [...]

COURIC: Explain to me why that enhances your foreign policy credentials.

PALIN: Well, it certainly does because our -- our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of. And there in Russia --

COURIC: Have you ever been involved with any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?

PALIN: We have trade missions back and forth. We -- we do -- it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where -- where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is -- from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to -- to our state.

Usually, candidates for national office get better as time goes on. Palin is clearly getting worse.

I mean, really, think about Palin's argument here. She has foreign policy experience because Palin flies over Alaskan air space. Seriously, that's what Palin told a national television audience.

First, it's probably not true. Moscow is in Western Russia, and if a Russian leader were flying to the U.S., he or she would probably fly over the Atlantic. But geography aside, what does this have to do with foreign policy experience? If a head of state flies over you, you necessarily gain a background in international affairs?

I'm afraid Sarah Palin is not only embarrassing herself, she's quickly become a national joke. That John McCain continues to allow her to serve on the Republican ticket suggests his judgment is comically lacking.

As a MAYOR of Wasilla, and a GOVERNOR of Alaska, she has EXTENSIVE foreign policy experience, dealing with the USA.

Yes, that's right! She got her passport so she could specifically travel down to the lower 48, and do some foreign policy with us foreigners here in the USA.

yeah....that's the ticket...

If her Logic Prevaile dthen My Gov Granholm would Also Qualify as a VP- except she's a Canadian- but of course Mac Wasn't born on US soil either .He was Born in Panama! NOT A NATURAL BORN US CITIZEN! Maybe she's adding Mac as one of her Foreign Leaders she has worked with Too!
As For Russia we were Not having a Problem with Russia until Mac's Camapign Advisors went over and made Empty promises to the Georgian President- Intentionally Start a battle with innocent citizens caught in the Middle.Seems that is one of Mac's Foreign Affairs Credo's too- how to stir up shit, Georgia/Russia, Columbia, talkin gshit about Iran, Pakistan, Venezula, Bolivia? I have no doubt that 'Rescue ' was Held Off an dStaged JUST for Mac's benefit...How much longer did those hostage have to suffer until Mac could get around to takin ghis Mark on the 'Stage'.
Palin i s aProblem for mac, Hi s Lobbists are a Problem Too- but all pale in comparison to the Problem John McCain has with the 'Life & times of John McCain' biography
HEY MAC YOUR CHICKENS HAVE COME HOME TO ROOST- IT'S CALLED THE ECONOMIC MELTDOWN OF THE USA! HECKOVA JOB!!

Cuban Air Space

On my way to the island of Aruba our Miami flight went right over Cuba. I took pictures of it as we went. I was surprised we could do so, but then discovered we apparently have air rights over a narrow strip of Cuban land.

So, that makes me an expert on Fidel because I was flying over Cuba during Fidel's rule.

In addition, on our way back we flew over the tip of Haiti. You can really tell the difference between the Dom. Rep. and Haiti. Haiti's border is totally denuded of trees. The Dom. Rep. is covered with them.

I am an expert on all Haitian affairs because I flew over part of Haiti.

I am. I say that I am, so that makes me an expert.

I am an expert on Cuba and Haiti because I've flown over their airspace.

And don't forget it, all you conservatives.

She means when their recon planes enter our airspace, not Putin himself

The Palin Pick is an outrage, an affront to all women and an insult to every American voter. She's inconceivably wrong for VP, and she speaks in a Bush-esque series of non sequiturs.

That said, I have to disagree with the author. Russian planes and American planes play cat-and-mouse all the time. It's a common occurrence, for a US Navy plane to be shadowed by a Russian plane. A few years back, a Navy P-3 Orion bumped into a Chinese plane. The Navy crew was held for several hours, if I remember right.

So when she refers to Putin rearing his head, she's talking about incursions into our airspace, in my opinion.

This person is embarrassing, scandalous, pathetic, over the top !
How can there be so many people in this country really sympathizing with this bimbo, willing to give this cheerleader moron the VP job!
No people in the entire planet would buy this bullshit!
How can so many American people be so STUPID!
And how can so many that aren't stupid support this for political reasons, or for ideological dogma, or because they are racists?
Thieves and crooks, fools and jokers...
Is that 50% of this nation? I still refuse to believe it.
Come on reasonable conservatives, intelligent Christians, (truly) patriotic Americans, bring this farce down!

The most common, most efficient "Great Circle" polar air routes from Moscow - or anywhere in Western Russia or Eastern Europe - to New York or Washington D.C. DO NOT EVER TOUCH Alaskan airspace!

They do touch Canadian airspace and Danish airspace (over Greenland) but they do NOT touch Alaskan airspace, unless the flight is connecting via the Russian Pacific e.g. Vladivostok.

So even on this point Sarah's remarks are silly and uninformed.

(I wonder why I have never seen this correction elsewhere on the web or in the press.)

For confirmation go to a globe or to Google Earth and just draw the straightest path from Moscow to Washington. It's not over Alaska.

And re: "seeing Russia from my window" - that's not true either. One cannot see Russia, even with a very powerful teloscope, from either Anchorage, Juneau or Wasilla.

Has Ms. Palin ever told the truth about anything?

Oh, first, don't the state legislators of Alaska meet 45 or 90 days a year. Texas too?, I believe. Now as part of the Palin/ McCain health plan, strong doses of valiun and xanax are to be available to citizens on demand at no cost.

Uncomfortable? That interview was one of the most painful things I have ever seen. Anyone who can make Katie Couric seem like a scholar has got be one dumb mutha'.

Dan Quayle reincarnated in a new gender roll? Not really. As much of a joke as Quayle was, he was playing, if only from much more rote experience, on an entirely different ball field than Palin. Dan was bush (no pun intended) league at best. Palin isn't even up to T-ball.

This is an embarrassment for the United States of America. Certainly this candidate is an embarrassment for the Republican Party-a good thing. So much for the "genius" of Karl Rove who lost the Republican majority in Congress and now it appears due to his role in picking Palin has ensured a loss for the Presidency, which had not been a sure thing of late-although it should have been. There is no way after the financial bust and the selection of this incoherent, way out of her depth, not-ever-gonna'-be-ready-for-prime-time candidate that the Republicans can possibly win the upcoming presidential election. If the impossible should happen, that's it! I am leaving this country for good.

Something to consider

about Sarah Palin.

She is the darling of the same neoconservative human excuses who created the Project for a New American Century which was the blue print for the invasion and destruction of Iraq, some of who are:

Sen. John McCain, Randy Scheunemann, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Richard Perle, Elliott Abrams, Eliot A. Cohen, Francis Fukuyama, Ken Adelman, Richard L. Armitage, Zalmay Khalilzad, John Bolton, Richard Holbrooke, Jeb Bush, Michael O'Hanlon

Charles Krauthammer, William Kristol, Donald Kagan, Norman Podhoretz, William J. Bennett,
Frederick Kagan, Robert Kagan, Rich Lowry, Frank Gaffney

Gary Bauer, James Dobbins, Thomas Donnelly, Paul Weyrich

These people, in spite of the death and destruction of Iraq, failed to create a the type of free-enterprise facist country they wanted.

And they were unable to force the favorite son to drop bombs on Iran. Even McCain, inspite of his bluster, in not stupid enough to attack Iran.

But Sarah Palin is a blank slate for these PNACers to use to create the type of person who is not smart enough to understand the ramifications of attacking other countries that are capable of attacking back.

McCain would not last six months in office with Palin and the PNACers ready to take over.
