Wasilla, Alaska

On September 20 and 21, I attended services at the church Sarah Palin belonged to since she was an adolescent, the Wasilla Assembly of God. Though Palin officially left the church in 2002, she is listed on its website as "a friend," and spoke there as recently as June 8 of this year.

I went specifically to see a pastor visiting from Kiambu, Kenya named Thomas Muthee. Muthee gained fame within Pentecostal circles by claiming that he defeated a local witch, Mama Jane, in a great spiritual battle, thus liberating his town from sin and opening its people to the spirit of Jesus.

Muthee's mounting stardom took him to Wasilla Assembly of God in May, 2005, where he prayed over Palin and called upon Jesus to propel her into the governor's mansion -- and beyond. Muthee also implored Jesus to protect Palin from "the spirit of witchcraft." The video archive of that startling sermon was scrubbed from Wasilla Assembly of God's website, but now it has reappeared.

The Youtube version is below (Palin appears after about 7:30):

Editor's note, for those who can't play video, a description provided by Sam Stein at The Huffington Post:

In it, the minister implores Jesus to protect Palin from "the spirit of witchcraft." Earlier, he states, "We need God taking over our education system. If we have God in our schools, we will not have our kids being taught how to worship Buddha, how to worship Muhammad. We will not have in the curriculum witchcraft and sorcery." He also preaches, "The other area is the media. We need believers in the media. We need God taking over the media in our lives."
Since Palin was nominated as vice president, Wasilla Assembly of God has taken a draconian line with reporters. The church now forbids members of the media from filming, taking notes, or bringing voice recorders to its services. I was able to record Muthee's recent sermons only by deploying an array of tiny cameras and hidden microphones. Though the quality and comprehensiveness of my footage was severely compromised by the church's closed door policy to the press, I was not going to be deterred.

By the end of the second day of Muthee's sermons, the church had been tipped off about me, the liberal media member in its midst. An associate pastor told me he had received an email from an anonymous source warning him about me. When I tried to interview members of the congregation in the church parking lot, my questions were either met with silence or open hostility. I strongly suspect the McCain campaign has mobilized the Wasilla Assembly of God against perceived threats from the media.

But they hardly needed encouragement. On the first night of services, Muthee implored his audience to wage "spiritual warfare" against "the enemy." As I filmed, a nervous church staffer approached from behind and told me to put my camera away. I acceded to his demand, but as Muthee urged the church to crush "the python spirit" of the unbeliever enemies by stomping on their necks, I pulled out a smaller camera and filmed from a more discreet position. Now, church members were in deep prayer, speaking in tongues and raising their hands. Muthee exclaimed, "We come against the spirit of witchcraft! We come against the python spirits!" Then, a local pastor took the mic from Muthee and added, "We stomp on the heads of the enemy!"

Behind the Christian right's enthusiasm for Palin's conservative credentials is a visceral sense that that she has come from them, not to them. Some right-wing evangelicals even believe she has messianic potential. As former Christian Broadcasting Network vice president Jim Bramlett wrote, "Sarah is that standard God has raised up to stop the flood. She has the anointing."

The Christian right's analysis is accurate to a certain degree. While Palin may not be The One, she is certainly one of them. Her social policy views, from her rejection of scientific evidence on global warming to her opposition to publicly funding emergency contraception for rape victims, are explicitly influenced by the sectarian theology she has subscribed to since she was a teenager. There is no better evidence of the depth of Palin's radical convictions than her startling encounter with the witch-hunter, Bishop Muthee.

Next week, I will post an exclusive video documentary here that will shed further light on Palin's relationship with Muthee and the religious right in Alaska. Stay tuned.

Digg!

Stop the flood? Would that be that diverted river to clean the stables of congress? That Herculean task we have set ourselves too?

I'm wondering about the snake. When I started this task I had a really vivid vision. I have told it before. It was a snake, a big snake and I went to grab it and it bit me in the hand. I determined the snake was the drug war, since it is so evil and has obviously bitten me.

I'd like to know what position a potential vice president Palin takes on the drug war.

And you are surprised? We had a preacher from Arkansas, Mike Huckabee, running for the Presidency who publicly stated his belief that the earth was only 6,000 years old. There was a candidate who proclaimed to the high heavens his steadfast committment to "family value," but who also cheated on his first two wives, is currently married to the paramour involved in the adulteries of his second marriage, and he used taxpayer money to fund her transportation to their rendevous in the Hamptons. Another candidate. the eventual nominee, a former POW who was tortured, came out aginst torure, and then turned around and voted for Bush's power to do exactly that.

So Palin believes in witches. Big deal. This seems to be the least of her negatives. That she was chosen in the first place is one scary thought. Who chose her and for what purpose? Obviously, there seems to be the immediate electoral justification, or rather tactic. Do we have another Bush waiting in the wings, possibly even more Bush-like than Bush himself? Another figurehead to front for a cabal that wants to continue its rule of America? Another Bush likely cannot be elected in the near future, so why not install one as vice-president and the presidency can simply be assumed in time. McCain can look awfully shaky at times.

So Sarah thinks witchcraft is worrisome. So Sarah believes the planet was created in seven days 6,000 years ago because the Bible says it's so. And the lady sold her ass to the corporate oil interests in Alaska, the state most devastated by glabal warming, which Sarah says just ain't so. There is nothing in the Bible about global warming. The reality show that American politics has become is so cheesy, Sarah fits right in.

It's all a surreal joke, right. This isn't really happening? It must be some trick of perception, some perverted gestalt at work? Win or lose, that someone like Palin could even be considered to run for any high national office, much less actually be running without being simply laughed out of the room by the nation and its press, is certain evidence of the damage that has been done to the Republic. If anyone thought they had any reasons to be optimisitc in the slightest, they don't anymore.

Near the beginning of this tape the preacher urges people to get to the polls and to vote for Sarah. That's against the law. The church is a 501(c)3, I assume and therefore tax-exempt. They are forbidden to endorse candidates.

What is so unusual or frightening of someone praying for another? I believe all Christian churches at one time or another do the laying on of hands. It's part of the Christian church that we should pray for all humanity including our enemies. But of course, it becomes a joke to those who don't believe.
Unbelievers just don't get it.

It looks like he may be correct! I do not intend to be put on the stake again in this life. The next time I am approached by people with ropes and guns I will be prepared. The behaviour of these Republicans and Democrats has warned me that they are together in this assault on logic!

One seeks to make an enemy of all the American people who are not thier brand of Christian. And the other seeks to change the Plan of Assault to Afghanistan. This is totally nuts!

It is as if this Country's rulers are saying, "Get ready Mater Fornicators, 'cause we are having Armegeddon one way or the Other!" So folks if you don't want to do that it is time to simply vote "no confidence" on every ballot turned in. Then sit back and see if the news media denies that shit and names a candidate. Then be ready gird your loins and rid this country of these theives once and for all.

To Our Jewish Friends....You Trust these Folks???

It amazes me there is even One Jewish person who believes these psuedo Christians and their lies.
Of course you don't to have a psuedo Christian to KNOW exactly what that Religous Dcotrine has Done to Exterminate the Jewish Community- Pick Up a History Book- Look Up Nazi's.
What baffles me is that the Jewish community has not taken great offense to not only historical facts and Acts waged against them..But the current 'End of Days' Theme which seems to be running Rampant among those who call themselves 'Friends of Israel'.
These Heretics not only think they have been deemed the Special ones, They have limited the seats available to the 'Rapture' for 144,000 Jews WHO HAVE CONVERTED- the Rest of ya are Fucked like US 'Sinners'
What also floors me is the Fact these 'Armegeddonist' have the audicity and arrogance to proclaim their mission of Bringing On 'Judgement Day'- So they have not only TOLD God who HE will be saving, They have set Up a Time line for Him to follow and have Brazenly proclaimed God is not Powerful enough to bring Our existence to an end Without their Help anymore- Who caused the 40 Days of Rain, Who parted the Red Sea, Who sent the Plagues upon Eygpt? Oh that 's Right it was the Christian Fundementalists Wasn't it! HERETICS
If the jewish community is Seeking Freindship- Look to other Religious communities who have suffered Persecution- not to the Inquistors!
You will be welcomed with open arms AND be able to maintain your own Beleifs and practices with Buddhists,Atheists/Agnostics,Wicca,Hindus and yes many Jews have found safe havens within th eMuslim communities Too (guess where the 'Christians' ran you people towards for protection during WW2- Out of Europe in into the Middle East! hell Guys Christians Kill Each over Just one Difference ( Statues- Catholic vs Protestant)So when these Extremeist scoff at Sunni vs Shia- I can not contain my laughter from the Hypocracy.
have no doubt these delusional Extremeist still can not figure out that everything that happened when Christ was crusxified was part of the Divine Plan- Judas was meant to betray Jesus, otherwise their would have been no Cruxifiction nor 'Resurrection'...these Folks Still Blame the jews for the Death of Jesus.
Beware those with smiling faces and 'laurel Leaves' they are hiding a sword behind their backs with that hand they did not extend. Know why some cultures shake with both hands - to assure there are no hidden weapons in either.
Demand these 'Friends of Irael' Reveal their Other hand, Then give them a Hug to check for Weapons under their clothes and behind their backs!!!

I wonder if the African Pentecostal has any idea how dangerous his words are here
Posted by: Jasonix on Sep 25, 2008 5:37 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The African Pentecostal lives in a world where carved totems are used to drive away evil spirits and where people give what little money they have to witch-shamans in a misguided attempt to cure loved ones from illness. For someone like the African witch-hunter, putting these witches out of business is probably a net positive for the community, since a witch-doctor probably offers a lot less value to the community than the pentecostal church that replaces it, which might at least offer a school with basic education in literacy and math and the occasional health clinic. When the village experiences a temporary decline in violence or illness, the relative peace is immediately ascribed to God's victory over evil spirits, and when things resume their normal course, the faithful are facing a new assault from the Devil.

His words, when spoken here, are interpreted in the context of a very different world-view. I doubt the African preacher has any idea how the people in the pews are interpreting his words, or what his simplistic ideas might lead to when put into practice by people with armies and missiles at their disposal.

As a former A.g. attendee, my observation is that the reporter was not well versed in the "Christianese" language, nor did he have enough understanding of prayer procedure to realize that Ms. Palin was not praying WITH, rather she was being prayed FOR.

May I address one popular misconception that I have noticed during this presidential campaign? To one who is unfamiliar with Pentecostal prayer, the language sounds quite militant. One must realize that the battle language refers to a spiritual dimension, not an actual physical take-over-the-government-by-force-before-rapture police action. By "doing battle" on their knees in prayer, these people believe that situations can be changed for the better, evil can be subdued, and courses can be set back on track. Prayer for individuals who are in positions of power is common, as the Bible teaches this practice.

So, next time you hear a Pentecostal doing the Braveheart FREEDOM! scream, don't panic. It's a call to prayer.

I also pray

I also pray that the White House and all the other branches of government will be filled with people who are right with god, but I am sure I mean something quite different from what this preacher does. I pray that our leaders will truly have open hearts - to people of all faiths or no faiths. That they will understand that our country was founded on the principle of separation of church and state so that all people could worship - or not- as was most meaningful to each of us. I pray that George Bush and Sarah Palin have their hearts and minds opened to see that god's world is much wider than they have been led to believe, and that there are many ways of loving each other and creation.

I absolutely support anyone's right to worship in their own way - and to be so passionate about it that they want to tell others the good news. But I absolutely draw the line at anyone attempting to IMPOSE their beliefs on me or anyone else. History shows (again and again, in small ways and large) that this leads to revolution.

Massachusetts has become a tourist trap. This time of year, up to haloween, is the busy season. Once one goes beyond the tourist shops selling witch hats and other tat, one can see something of the history behind the witch trials.

The Salem witch trials were a horrific example of what fear of witches can result in - the african-alaskan preacher who has obviously impressed Bimbo Palin could be a very dangerous man.

I wonder if she was involved with the massive cult infestation that existed in the West a few decades ago??? As a former volunteer rape crisis counselor I learned about it by some very credible sources.(As well as experienced some harassment myself after trying to help someone!) After reading all I could, I am convinced that not only was there a huge underground cult presence, but the whole thing was really a front for government mind control experiments. This is not as farfetched as it seems. It has been documented that both the U.S. and the Russians spent money on "paranormal" warfare research. People file unknown phenomena into their beliefs systems. So anything unexplained was likely to be attributed to Satan verses the CIA. This is in no way a defense of Palin who clearly is not qualified to be VP. But who knows, maybe her strings are still being pulled and that is why she was chosen!!!

A clear warning from 1952

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I'm submiting a quote from the 1952 Introduction to “If This Goes On,” a novelette about a future pseudo-religious, fascist, theocratic America. The story was written by Robert A. Heinlein in 1939 & the Introduction in 1952 for the book REVOLT IN 2100. I first read it in 1952 or 53, age 16 or 17. It helped me break away from the fundamentalist church I was attending with an uneasy conscience, because of its preaching of racism, antisemitism, anti-science, the Cold War and general hatred of anyone not within its narrow dogmas. Two years later, in college, I found the liberty of thought I was seeking and became a Unitarian. Here's the quote:
-------------------------------
". . . As for the. . . notion. . . that we could lose our freedom by succumbing to a wave of religious hysteria, I am sorry to say that I consider it possible. I hope that it is not probable. But there is a latent deep strain of religious fanaticism in our culture; it is rooted in our history and it has broken out many times in the past. It is with us now [1952]; there has been a sharp rise in strongly evangelical sects in this country in recent years, some of which hold beliefs theocratic in the extreme, anti-intellectual, anti-scientific, and anti-libertarian.

"It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the. young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics. This is equally true whether the faith is Communism or Holy-Rollerism; indeed it is the bounden duty of the faithful to do so. The custodians of the True Faith cannot logically admit tolerance of heresy to be a virtue.

"Nevertheless this business of legislating religious beliefs into law has never been more than sporadically successful in this country—Sunday closing laws here and there, anti-birth control legislation in spots, the Prohibition experiment, temporary enclaves of theocracy such as Voliva’s Zion, Smith’s Nauvoo, a few others. The country is split up into such a variety of faiths and sects that a degree of uneasy tolerance now exists from expedient compromise; the minorities constitute a majority of opposition against each other.

"Could it be otherwise here? Could any one sect obtain a working majority at the polls and take over the country? Perhaps not--but a combination of a dynamic evangelist, television, enough money, and modern techniques of advertising and propaganda might make Billy Sunday’s efforts look like a corner store. . . Throw in a depression for good measure, promise a material heaven here on earth, add a dash of anti-Semitism, anti-Catholicism, anti-Negroism, and a good large dose of anti-”furriners” in general and anti-intellectuals here at home, and the result might be something quite frightening—particularly when one recalls that our voting system is such that a minority distributed as pluralities in enough states can constitute a working majority in Washington. . .

"I imagined . . . [that for] storm troopers they revived the Ku Klux Klan in everything but the name--sheets, passwords, grips and all. It was a “good gimmick” once and it still served. Blood at the polls and blood in the streets,. . . [and the religious fanatics] won the election. The next election was never held.

"Impossible? . . . The capacity of the human mind for. swallowing nonsense and spewing it forth in violent and repressive action has never yet been plumbed."
-- written by ROBERT A. HEINLEIN, Colorado Springs, Colorado, October 1952
