Maureen Dowd Drags Down the Discourse

Maureen Dowd's columns are a bottomless well of shallow critique.

You know that moment, at the end of A Streetcar Named Desire, when Blanche goes completely off the rails and has to be dragged of to the loony bin? I have a feeling Maureen Dowd is about to learn how to depend on the kindness of strangers.

It's been a little disturbing, watching her bounce around these last few months, but today, she loses it completely, framing an imaginary debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in which each of them, well, talks to the other like they're MoDo.

It's disturbing and a little concerning to see Maureen's rich fantasy life so fully on display, with Hillary calling Obama "Twiggy," "rookie," "Skeletor," and "Bones," accusing him of fake eating, and promising to lock Bill in Dick Cheney's bunker if she's made VP.

Obama, for his part, calls her "Sweetie" and a stalker, accuses her of floating "White Fright," says the Clintons are "too much drama" and Bill is "off-the-charts crazy," and, most predictably of all, asks her, "Can you stop talking, Hillary? Is that even possible?" Wow, talk about pulling out your old chestnuts: HRC is now the Wife of Bath.

And it's not Maureen saying it: it's the candidates themselves! So you know this what they're really thinking!

My main beef with MoDo is and has always been a sort of terminal shallowness which unfortunately fails to find bottom. Just when you think she can't possibly sink lower, she finds some scrap of text scribbled on a piece of toilet paper stuck to the bottom of her Ferragamos and finds a way to work it in.

As the front page of Maureen's own paper shows, Obama's got it more or less locked at this point, but Clinton's strong showing cannot and should not be discounted. Dems have a couple weeks worth of work to do healing divisions, but in the end, it will be fine. I have never believed, and still don't, that Obama voters would refuse to vote for HRC or vice versa: people are not that stupid. We know what this is about, and here's a few hints for you, Maureen:

*it's not about who eats what
*it's not about who smokes
*it's not about who hates who
*it's not about your cocktail parties
*it's not about the fact that Bill wouldn't fuck you
*it's not about youthful drug use
*it's not about John Edwards' hair
*it's not about your Mandingo fantasies (a hint: I wouldn't expect President Obama to fuck you either)
*it's not about your massive misunderstandings about male-female relationships
*it's not about you

Hard as it may be to believe from the professionally decorated and chakra-managed walls of your co-op, there are people hurting out here. Badly. We have a war to end, a reputation to rebuild, an economy to resuscitate, and a nation to heal. We have work to do. Go play out your fantasies somewhere else.

Digg!

I've been working on a Shakespearian motif myself Molly..largely induced by all this cough medicine and fever I've been fighting of late which is always very inspirational like something out of Dostoyevsky..nothing better than a fever and sickness to get the justices flowing..creatively as well as everywhere else..

We could cast all the players as Shakespearian characters Hillary as Lady Macbeth of course..

Obama I don't know Hamlet, but maybe Puck from Mid Summer Night's Dream..we could let Chris Matthews be Puck darting in and out of the dialog..

Maybe we can make this a joint effort with Hillary as Lady Macbeth and Obama Hamlet who else in this long drama which is undeniably Shakespearian who would you cast as which character from any play you like who would Chelsea be..Bill Clinton and is Bill Richardson Iago or the honorable but tragic MacDuff..

Who is Edwards..the possibilities are endless and so applicable...

There's no denying this "Something is (for sure) rotten in Denmark"..if you get my drift..

I never thought I could dislike Maureen Dowd. But for some time now she has hit rock bottom as a writer. She doesn't like anyone and finds ways to belittle and demean that's almost clever, except that she's so offensive. It's not satire or commentary. It's just mean at times. Her sense of humor is gone and replaced by a bitter tone that obscures any message she's trying to convey. Thanks, ANNA

Snarky, shallow, supercilious, self-centered.

Put her with Brooks and Kristol in sackcloth and chains and make them stand on 43rd Street begging our forgiveness.

Give their salaries to me.

Thanks for saying what has been on my mind for several years. Maybe six or seven years ago Ms. Dowd had something to say. No more. But WTF is up with the NY Times anyway. As someone above pointed out: Kristol, Brooks, Dowd - what a waste of ink.

Is this a reflection of a personal problem or has she simply capitulated to "lowest common denominator" commentary? Is she desperate to be provocative and/or funny? And where has the NY Times been in demanding more substance and thought from her?

I used to look up to Maureen Dowd; now she's irrelevant. She has abandoned her feminism, her intellect and her dignity. For what? I don't know.

I wish she would just go away. Quietly.

Golly, Molly, don't you understand humor and irony? Dowd's "Final Debate" between Hillary and Obama was hilarious, I thought, and though I voted for Obama and argued with a woman in Indianapolis who called me "her best friend" last Christmastime about the "need for a woman President now," and I heard Prof. Michael Dyson of Georgetown U regret that Dowd had been a bit harsh on Hillary lately, she also was pretty sharp in this particular column. Lighten up, Ms. Ivors. Sure, there is a war and recession and unemployment and the candidates all are ignoring some of the big issues, but blame FOX, Wolf Blitzer, and other journalists who emphasize the trivial details of the candidates, not humorists such as Ms. Dowd.

I'm no rabid Dowd fan but I think her piece in the NYT was an apt parody of how the race between Obama and Clinton has sunk to the level of name-calling and ad nauseum debate about irrelevant issues of race and sex.

While it seems that she is doing nothing whatsoever to elevate the discussion, that is precisely the point.

Doesn't anyone have a sense of humor or at least a sense of irony these days?

...edgy mantra and style, and she has the right to continue.

But, these are one of the most serious turning points in our history, maybe the most serious.

The right wing is not "conservative" anymore, they are fascists that want to destroy and/or rewrite the constitution. One of the forces behind them are the religious who want to make this a theocracy. The only way they can do this is by destroying the constitution.

So, this is a war for the heart and soul of this country, and this is not time for Mo to make light of the little faults of any progressive and in essence give aid an comfort to the enemy in any way shape or form.

Has anyone here seen the leaders of the neoconazis demonize any of their cohorts? NEVER comes to my mind. They stick to the party line and talking points hook, line and sinker.

Mo's style may have been good in the past, but she has to be more of a team player.

To me it is not much different than Al Gore's commercials featuring the likes of Al Sharpton and Pat Robinson. These commercials help to rehabilitate and give credibility to people like Robinson, to which they deserve NONE.

When was the last time the neoconazis tried to compromise or give credibility to ANYONE that is progressive.

This is a war people, for the soul of this country and I would hope that Mo would save her cutesy writing for when, at least, a battle has been won.

Ms. Dowd reminds me of the rich, snobby cheerleader type in high school who can not say a nice word about anyone.

I used to enjoy her, but she gets old pretty fast. Sometimes I think she puts more energy into being cleaver and witty than she does in presenting a good argument.

She was, once, biting and pointed and relevant. I'm not sure what's going on here, but it could be her own demons that are being wrestled on the public page. That stupid book that she wrote, and shamelessly promoted with attempted sex-appeal, last year, was a sign of something being a bit off.

I miss the real Maureen Dowd.

Maureen is emblematic of the mentality that has gripped this nation, and which is led by the so called "press." Journalism has become a produced product. It sells things, and it influences the debate. It tells a narrative and has an agenda that bears little resemblance to the corps of courageous eyewitnesses who studied journalism. Show me a journalist, and I will show you someone with producers, editors, and bosses who produce ideas. Maureen is simply a journalist who has been drinking the corporate and political cool-aid for so long, that she has lost her ability and courage to think. She is simply unreadable. But to say she stands out? Not so much. Lousy journalists are the rule, not the exception.

Why does Obama Strike the Hitler Pose?

Ever wonder why Obama likes that pose with the viewer looking up to him as he gazes up into the sky and into the distance? It was Hitler's favorite pose for photographs.

The Caesars struck that pose as well, for busts and coins.

It is the typical pose of one who thinks of himself as god-like, above the rest of humanity, and destined to be a czar.

Great commentary on the decline of Ms. Dowd. She has lost touch with her roots and the general public. The most recent rambling columns seem to go nowhere. They don't even seem to be written by her. Bitterness and resentment seem to have finally wiped out the humor, creativity, and wit. That perfect man she's looking for died over 2000 years ago, so the outlook is bleak at the Times.

There are many of her columns I enjoy reading because the woman can write. But how can you take her seriously when she wanders all over the ideological landscape, apparently with no map? If she just wants to be an entertainer, so be it, but if she wants to be taken seriously as a thinker, she needs to be more thoughtful and consistent.

The author of the article makes nasty, snarky, personal attacks. What's the point? To show that the writer can attack on the same "shallow" level she accuses Dowd of inhabiting?

Why are the negative comments mostly so personal? If you don't like her style, fine. But Ms. Dowd is nowhere near the low level of Brooks and Kristol, and lumping them together gives those two morons way too much credit. They are actually somewhat dangerous.

And to the comment that said Dowd has to be a "team player," I ask, doesn't she get to say what she thinks?
