Obama Stands Up to Bush, the FCC, and Big Media

Posted by Matt Stoller, Open Left at 9:58 AM on May 16, 2008.

Sen. Obama locks horns with the FCC and speaks up for diversity in media.

John Eggerton at Broadcasting and Cable has the story.

The fight over the Federal Communications Commission's Dec. 18 media-ownership vote set up a potential battle between the current president and a senator who wants to be the next one.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) Thursday urged the House to follow the Senate's lead and pass a resolution of disapproval, an unusual legislative maneuver that would invalidate the FCC's decision to allow TV and radio stations and newspapers to be co-owned in the top 20 markets, subject to some conditions.

After the Senate approved the measure, Obama, a co-sponsor of the bill, released a statement saying, "I urge my colleagues in the House of Representatives to expeditiously pass the legislation."

He framed the vote, as he has before, as standing up to "Washington special interests," a campaign theme. "Our nation's media market must reflect the diverse voices of our population, and it is essential that the FCC promotes the public interest and diversity in ownership," he said.

The FCC decision to consolidate yet more media was opposed by 99% of public comments. As Paul Rosenberg noted in this comments, this might be the single least popular decision by the Bush administration ever. But Obama, as he did with his media and tech plan, took this further, and called for diversity and representation for the public interest in media ownership.

With ownership levels for minorities and women in media in the low single digits, Obama is really saying that it's time to reshape our media system. In discussing Reagan, one of the great conservative media reformers, remember he made the following comment.

"I didn't' say I liked Ronald Reagan's policies," Obama explained. "What I said was that was the kind of working majority we need to form in order to move a progressive agenda forward."

With the Pentagon Pundit scandal coming on the wave of a number of serious breakdowns of the public legitimacy of the press, the public desire for a new media system is strong. The technological capacity to create such a system exists, in fact, media has been dramatically reshaped already through the internet. Broadcast media, though, is still somewhat untouched, but this kind of serious structural argument about the media from the likely President is something that cable and broadcast executives, as well as progressives, should take very seriously.

I've heard quite frequently from political operatives that this race is not Obama versus McCain, but Obama versus the media. And it's clear that without breaking down the structure of the media conglomerates, public discourse will remain as polluted and dishonest as it is now. And so President Obama is telegraphing his intentions to be a media reformer. Now it's up to us to help him get there.

Oh, boy. NOW Obama has likely pissed off Big Media, the very same Big Media that he needs in order to win.
Watch for more stories about the Rev Wright, and fewer stories about the Revs Hagee and Parsley from the broadcast press. Watch for more stories that try to drive a wedge between people of different races. Watch for new "controversies" that make the whole deal over flag-pins look positively relevant.
The media has ALWAYS had a thing against Obama. But now even the pretense of unbiased reporting will be out the window.

This is one reason why I get most of my information from on-line. This is why I don't watch TV anymore, and why I hardly ever listen to the radio. Bullshit in -- bullshit out, they say. And as Barbara Bush would say, why should I waste my beautiful mind on that?

Buy back the Spectrum that has been licensed and turn it into WiFi

If you want to help eliminate the control Big Media has over news and information stop giving them a monopoly over the airwaves.

With the internet people get to choose what news and information they consume from a limitless supply of what others create.

With TV and radio people can only choose between companies with enough money to buy slices of spectrum who then control what is broadcasted on it.

Turn this spectrum into WiFi and the people will get the choice, it is our airwaves after all.

"The FCC decision to consolidate yet more media was opposed by 99% of public comments..."

Ironic, that they dismiss what 99% of the public comments said, when the airwaves actually belong to the people of this country! They are OURS and we have the right to take them back.

The first step is breaking up the big monopolies. The second step is re-instating the Fairness Doctrine so these blowhard wing-nuts won't have a monopoly anymore. The third is to make these owners commit to a certain number of hours per week dedicated to programming that is in the "public interest," as their FCC licenses stipulate. And, finally, start giving licenses to minorities and community-funded public stations (independent, not PBS or NPR) who can best represent their communities, rather than having our information dictated to us directly from the RNC.

This is a good first step. But there are many more to go if we are to reclaim OUR airwaves.

I applaud Obama for his willingness to take a stand. We need to hold our elected officials' feet to the fire and get them to sponsor legislation forcing the owners (and the current FCC) to be reigned in. They ARE answerable to us. We need to start taking back our power.

At long last we have a presidential candidate (almost surely the next president) who's ready and able to take on the hate-mongering right -- the obtuse and arrogant bullies who have cost America its honor and squandered its resources.

At this dangerous crossroads, Obama seems to offer the perfect alexin to our deep malaise.

I have been say that this has been the root of the problem. Most Americans do not know the truth. Without the truth we can be manipulated by fear and hate.
Obama needs Kasenish (sorry for the spelling) for a running mate. I am afraid Obama may be killed. Obama needs someone as Vice President more radical than him. That would be best security he can have.

The system for which the corporatocracy has bought and paid our government representatives is hard to beat. Beyond doubt, any candidate who goes up against big business is going to have the political rug pulled out from under him or her. Who do you think owns the rug? Who do you think sponsored the Swift Boaters? Big Business is NOT going to go quietly into that sweet night after all the money, influence and corruption they were able to amass since they bought Reagan into office.

Of course Obama will need the support of the citizenry, but how does he go about getting support that will really work? It's great that Obama is getting more young people involved in the VOTING process, but it smacks of a college fad, here today, gone tomorrow, as was the '70s. Where's all that idealism and activism today? Involvement in the voting process doesn't naturally transition into the daily grind necessary to undo the underlying plutocracy/business oligarchy.

What Obama IS going to need is millions of highly informed , highly involved kinds of support throughout his assumed term in office. How many millions of these new-found political "activists" are willing to make that kind of sacrifice? How many even know what the candidates are talking about (watched Leno's street people quiz shows lately)?

It WILL take millions of supporters to beat back the big money special interests. It WILL take a constant barrage of emails, blogs, phone calls, letters, maybe even sit-ins, rallies, etc., aimed at politicians and the businesses that own them telling them you've "had enough and aren't going to take it any more." Purple Girl has the right idea, don't buy so much. Even then, will Obama actually take on the plutocracy? Does he have the resources? I'd feel better if he changed his slogan from "Yes. we can," to "yes, we WILL!"

Problems

We got problems, with a capital P, and that rhymes with T, and that stands for pool! Sorry; I just had to get that one out. Our problems are manifold, and can't be easily summed up in a few words. Ignorance is our biggest problem here, as evidenced by so many know-nothings who, nonetheless have OPINIONS, however lacking in any grounding in fact. The neocon crooks know this, and promote ignorance every way they can, from letting our public school systems wither away, to seizing control of popular media, the better to spread their lies and evoke emotional responses to trival matters, like who Obama's pastor is and what he said, the better to obfuscate the truth of their many dismal failures and the thuggish nature of this regime. The ONLY cure to this widespread ignorance is EDUCATION. Tall order, but it's got to be done.
