Say It Ain't So! Hillary Agrees to Fox Debate

Posted by Jane Hamsher, Firedoglake at 12:17 PM on February 5, 2008.

Fox is not a news outlet, it's an openly partisan opinion factory and the Democrats should not be legitimizing them by doing this.
Fox Attacks Obama

On a conference call today, Howard Wolfson of the Clinton campaign has said that Hillary Clinton will appear in a Fox News debate on February 11 in Washington, DC.

After Roger Ailes made a joke comparing Barack Obama to Osama Bin Laden, Harry Reid rightfully nixed a Democratic Fox debate in Nevada:

In a joint letter faxed today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Tom Collins, the head of the Nevada Democratic Party, informed Fox News executive producer Marty Ryan of the decision.

"A month ago, the Nevada Democratic Party entered into a good faith agreement with FOX News to co-sponsor a presidential debate in August,'' Reid and Collins said in the letter. "This was done because the Nevada Democratic Party is reaching out to new voters and we strongly believe that a Democrat will not win Nevada unless we find new ways to talk to new people. To say the least, this was not a popular decision. But it is one that the Democratic Party stood by.''

"However, comments made last night by FOX News President Roger Ailes in reference to one of our presidential candidates went too far,'' the letter went on. "We cannot, as good Democrats, put our party in a position to defend such comments.. In light of his comments, we have concluded that it is not possible to hold a Presidential debate that will focus on our candidates and are therefore canceling our August debate. We take no pleasure in this, but it is the only course of action.''

I asked Wolfson if this puts Obama in an awkward position considering how awful Ailes' comments were, especially in light of Reid's decision. Wolfson defended the choice to accept the Fox debate because Obama has appeared on Fox News himself recently. Which is true, he has, but it doesn't excuse how many awful lies and distortions Fox has peddled in order to damage Obama, Clinton and Democrats in general.

Fox is not a news outlet, it's an openly partisan opinion factory and the Democrats should not be legitimizing them (and allowing them to recruit Democratic viewers to propagandize to) by doing this.

Digg!

I would think that if Hillary thought she had the election sewn up, she wouldn't be accepting the offer to debate on FIX.

So, why then would she do it? It could very well be that in hearing how much McCain is disliked by the right wing branch of the Republicans, that she's possibly courting their vote. There's no way in hell a FIX-watching, O'Reilly/Limbaugh/Bush loyalist would vote for Obama, but maybe Hillary. Hell, Coulter has already said she'd campaign for Clinton before she would McCain. And, whether that's nothing more than a tactic is yet to be known, but it might sway enough lazy lemming Republicans to shift their alliances this time for Hillary.

So, why not go on FIX and debate with Obama? Show the 24% who still believe that the country is heading in the right direction that she'd be a good candidate for them. I mean, if Obama does start gobbling up the Democratic delegates that she thought were hers, why not con a few right wingers who are dissatisfied with their candidates to vote for her?

I really hope Obama says no. Debating there is not going to help him: turning them down won't lose him any votes, but appearing on there might gain Hillary some votes.

Roger Ailes (Fox News Chairman) is a Clinton contributor. If you ever wonder what's really going on in anything political, FOLLOW THE MONEY. It will tell the story every time.

No surprise here that she agreed. It's the quid pro quo system at work right before our eyes.

it's wierd. something that i really respect about barak obama is his desire to engage "the other side" (namely iran), which, to a certain level is what clinton may be doing with fox.
fox does represent a demographic in america if u like it or not.
i despise fox and what it represents as a news media organisation (collusion in the creation of the war on iraq, which constitutes a war crime in the world court), but i have to tell u that if i were looking to engage the country, which means fox viewers too, what better way than in a live debate?

-and BTW, CNN is also guilty of war crimes with relation to falsifying coverage of the war and occupation of iraq. i did a whole series of pieces which dealt with CNN coverage and collusion into the creation of a false image of iraq for american viewers.
the second half of this one was made of CNN footage, unfiltered spanish footage and footage captured by Iraqis in falluja during the collective punishment destruction of a city of +250,000 people.

Hillary and Obama on Fox? It would be like McCain, Huckaby, Paul and Romney appearing for a debate on Air America.
Not a bad idea. It would give the people at air america a chance to show how much better they are at civility than Rojer Ailes and his ilk.
In fact, the Democratic leadership should show some ballsy-brinksmanship, and make an ultimatum: Repub's on Air. Amer. or no Dem's on Fox!

the idea that she, or any other democrat, could sway a single voter so brainwashed by fox is ridiculous.
If she needs a refresher course on what it means to play nice with the opposition, she should get off the campaign trail and go back to the senate floor and work out all those "bipartisan" issues that are clamoring for her attention.
Start with FISA, and then pick any other topic. There are PLENTY.
Maybe then she will be reminded why this foolishness is a huge waste of time.
A two hour debate will guarantee her two MONTHS of personal attacks from all of the barking fanatics at fox

If you are going to be president you have to take it all. You need to be strong and move forward whether you like the situation or not. You can not be afraid as to what they are going to say. It's sad to say that Obama has not shown much conviction and what if he was presdient and has to face things he does not like or agree, he is just going to say NO?????
Sorry this only shows how very naive and inexperience he is, what is he afraid of???
Fortunately we have a candidate that can take
it, give it and turn it into a positive. Like it or Not.. Hillary is the experienced one who can face any problem that may come our way..she will bring us back to an economy we once had before this Bush Administration... She is for the people@!
Hillary will be the best commander & Chief!!!

If Obama has any sense, the same sound as the "debate."

A) Murdoch raised money for Clinton

B) He already said he wouldn't do it.

C) We don't need to know when he stopped beating his wife.

If experience is what is needed in Washington, I ask, "what has experience brought us?" We've had plenty of experience.........Cheney, Bushes 1 and 2, Clintons, Rumsfeld, among many others. I hope to see some "unexperienced" people try their hand at governing, especially those who can inspire us to our better selves.

a change in the news ads for their local Fox news channel. I'm in the San Diego area and the ads recently have begun touting the fact that Fox presents all the news while the graphic behind the words show actual combat photos and peace protests and homeless veterans and blah, blah, blah. I haven't brought myself to watch this new news yet but I'm just wondering could it be that even Murdoch has to follow the money?

First what is the definition of a news channel. If fox is not a news channel then tell exactly why!? It appears to be to me. They certainly have a slant as ALL the rest do too. It just may not be your flavor (or mine at times) that is not reason enough to dismiss them as not a news channel. (kinda like "if you don't tell me what I want to hear and support what I support then you are not really there). Kind retarded isn't it!?

Second I would think that somebody who wants to be president of the UNITED STATES would not be afraid to come on a established news channel and have an open debate. I mean if you are going to go head to head with world leaders who are dictators then why not with other americans that you want to represent. Or maybe you DON"T want to be president of ALL americans.

Thirdly, I am not sure what the president of Fox said but I have heard high officals remarks on the other channels and they have said some pretty nasty things in the past about the other political side. Let's not play with 2 sets of rules here.

I believ that Hil. is right if she has the debate on FOX. Beside McCain she may give viewers of FOX a good alternitive. I really believ she already has actually.

Hillary will tell Fox where to get off and rip them a new one while on the air. Maybe she'll tell them that if they don't clean up their act come Jan 20th., 2009, they'll be liable for criminal prosecution. Maybe bush will come clean and confess to all his crimes.

Paul Krugman and most of the mainline press & media are trying to portray health insurance as the only difference between the corporatist Hillary and over conciliatory Obma. Obama accepted the ´pece branch´from Hillary fter the failue of Bill in his negative confrontations. Obama despertely needs to get agressive about his differences in war voting and distinguish himself from warmonger Hillary and her voting record. How dare her attack Obama´s anti war intent!

We internet hacks are only preaching to the choir at this point.

We need to mount a general strike at Hillary by writing to the editors of small and large newspapers in the states with upcoming primaries.

Write today, esp. with those who are in those states. Get them out today to avert a disaster of the Clinton alliance with Geo Bush Sr, Rupert Murdoch, FOX, CITI Bank, FOX, etc. etc.

Yes, That is the deal she cut with Rupert: money for action; a prelude to her coming administration. The Clntons sold out long ago to the fascist corportists. Look uo ¨corporatist¨ on Wikipedia. Use this word in its true Benito Mussolini definition. Mussolini coined this word. Corporatism is exactly what we have inherited from the Republicans and Clintons since Nixon.

I AM TIRED OF OBAMA'S SPEECHES OF CHANGE AND HOPE, CHANGE, HOPE, CHANGE, HOPE WITH NO SUBSTANCE OR MUSHY HOG WASH OF BS;
Now the following is a speech of subtance!!!
Excerpts from Hillary Rodham Clinton's speech on Super Tuesday, as transcribed by CQ Transcriptions.
___
You know, tonight, we are hearing the voices of people across America, people of all ages, of all colors, all faiths and all walks of life, people on the day shift, the night shift, the late shift, with the crying babies, moms and dads who want a better world for our children, young people who deserve a world of opportunity, all those who aren't in the headlines, but have always written America's story.
After seven years of a president who listens only to the special interests, you're ready for a president who brings your voice, your values and your dreams to your White House.
___
And on just — on just one really serious note, we want to keep the people of Arkansas and Tennessee in our prayers. They suffered horrible tornadoes tonight.
We just talked to some of our folks there and people have died in both states, and our thoughts and prayers go out to them in this moment of their need.
___
It's about your lives, your families, your futures. It's about the people who have shared their problems with me, looking for solutions, the mother whose insurance company won't pay for her child's treatment, the couple so determined to send their daughter to college, they're willing to mortgage their home with a sub-prime second mortgage, the man who asked me what he was supposed to do after training the person who will take his job in another country, the veterans who've come home only to find they don't have the health care, the compensation and the services they need.
It's also about the people who want to seize America's opportunities. It's about the unions and businesses who are training people for green-collar jobs.
It's about the auto companies and the auto workers who want higher gas mileage cars so we can compete with the rest of the world.
It's about — it's about our scientists and researchers who want to be able to do stem cell research right here in the United States of America.
It's about our contractors and our construction workers who want to get to work to rebuild America, from the bridges in Minnesota to the levees in New Orleans.
Now, for seven years, we have seen President Bush's answer. They don't know what's at stake in this election, but we do. We know what we need is someone ready on Day One to solve our problems and seize those opportunities.
Because when the bright lights are off and the cameras are gone, who can you count on to listen to you, to stand up for you, to deliver solutions for you?
Well, the Republicans want eight more years of the same. They see ... they see tax cuts for the wealthy and they say, why not more? They see $9 trillion in debt and say, why not trillions more? They see five years in Iraq and say, why not 100 more?
Well ... they've got until January 20, 2009 and not one day more.
Now, we know the Republicans won't give up the White House without a fight. Well, let me be clear — I won't let anyone swift boat this country's future.
Together, we're going to take back America, because I see an America where our economy works for everyone, not just those at the top, where prosperity is shared and we create good jobs that stay right here in America.

THERE IS MORE///CHECK IT OUT!!!!!
NOW THIS IS A SPEECH OF SUBSTNCE:::: VOTE HILLARY FOR A BETTER AMERICA FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS/TIME TO STOP THE FALLING OF OUR ECONOMY
VOTE FOR HILLARY!

Bottom line--until we make elections totally publically funded, go back to the "equal time, equal access" rule in our media, (or some better version), make our voting system secure with paper ballots that we can see with our own eyes, make election day a (payed?) National Holiday so all have few excuses not to vote, make voting an act of personal pride and responsibility in the eyes of all, make elections "clean"-- do something about our crazy electoral system (win by popular vote!)in other words, make it real so that ANYONE can run for elective office in this great country of ours---not just the wealthy--then no one will have to compromise their values to get money to buy the time, to pay the fat-cat owner/ broadcasters who use OUR AIRWAVES.Until that day when we take back our power as a people who should be lighting the way as we used to be known and admired for, then we're stuck with this 'effed' up system of ours. Let's take our country back and make it right.
