Sign the letter to Bill O'Reilly demanding he apologize to the "non-existent" homeless vets here.

To Bill O'Reilly: Homeless veterans exist. I met some.

In a previous post, I wrote about Bill O'Reilly's bizarre assertion that there are no homeless veterans in America. He made this claim on January 4, 2008 while talking about a speech by John Edwards where Edwards said that 200,000 vets are homeless on any given night in America. BOR continued to deny the existence of homeless veterans on January 16, 2008 during an interview with radio host Ed Schultz. This time, he added a caveat that if there are homeless veterans, "there aren't many of them out there". You can see both clips for yourself and read transcripts here, since I'm sure you'll soon be hearing BOR complain, as he always does when he's criticized for something he said, that he has been "taken out of context." The context of these unedited clips is quite clear.

On both occasions, BOR was either ignorant to or consciously ignoring a recent study from the National Alliance to End Homelessness (using data from the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Census Bureau) that found:

In 2006, approximately 195,827 veterans were homeless on a given night -- an increase of 0.8 percent from 194,254 in 2005. More veterans experience homelessness over the course of the year. We estimate that 336,627 were homeless in 2006.

Either that or BOR believes that 195,827 homeless veterans (and that number is surely low) is a small enough number of homeless veterans as to be insignificant. I have no idea what number of homeless veterans BOR considers to be "many" -- 195,827 homeless veterans certainly seems like a lot to me.

BOR said that he couldn't find any homeless veterans. Maybe he wasn't looking in the right places. It took me less than a day to find several hundred.

I went to U.S. Vets in Inglewood, California. US Vets is the largest non-profit organization in the US dedicated to helping homeless and at-risk veterans with temporary housing, counseling, and employment assistance. The facility currently houses up to 500 homeless veterans.

I talked to over a dozen homeless vets, some who had served as far back as the Korean War, and showed them the clips of BOR denying or dismissing their existence. The reactions to the clips were quite similar -- a shaking of the head in disbelief, a derisive chuckle or snort, and a deep sigh when the videos were over. Some of the veterans couldn't believe that anyone could be so clueless and naïve, while others wondered why BOR hadn't bothered to do any research before making such a dubious claim. Twice.

I can't imagine what it's like to have sacrificed so much in service to your country, then to come home to find that the country you served has no interest in re-integrating you back into society. Then you can't get a place to live because you don't have a job, and you can't get a job because you don't have a place to live. Then some idiot with a TV show gets up in front of an audience of millions and says that you do not exist. Twice.

Let me be very clear: the veterans in this video are homeless. Soldiers are trained to adapt and survive, and many have adapted so they can survive being homeless. The men in the video may not be pushing shopping carts or sleeping out on the streets dressed in rags, but they are homeless. Through the work of U.S. Vets and the US Department of Veterans Affairs, these men have roofs over their heads, food, counseling, and a support system, but they are homeless. They have a temporary place to stay, but they do not have homes.

These veterans are homeless, they exist, and no matter what BOR says, there are way too many of them. These are proud men and women who need help and are often reluctant to ask for it. They do not need BOR saying that they do not exist or that there are so few of them that they don't matter.

FOX ATTACKS! "Non-Existent" Veterans only scratches the surface of the afternoon I spent at U.S. Vets. I plan to complete a longer video very soon that will include more of the interviews with these amazing people. It was an honor and a privilege to be in their presence and to hear what they had to say.

If you would like to learn more about U.S. Vets and make a donation, go to USVetsinc.org.

idiot strikes again. Fox News has never allowed facts to cloud the issue. If Billy Boy says it is so then it must be.

Billy and the rest of the right wing loonies are dragging us farther and farther down the path of ignorance. A certain portion of the American people demand their right to remain uninformed or ill informed. The problem is that they also get to vote. As Andy Rooney said it only takes one stupid person to cancel my vote.

For Billy Offal to even question the fact of Veteran homelessness is a travesty. But maybe there is a method to their madness. Billy and his band of warmonger brothers don't want the American people to realize that their cheerleading for the Bushco. war will undoubtedly produce more of these unfortunate souls for the streets to swallow. The physical and psychological impact of this War for Profit in Iraq has been, is, and will be with us for decades to come. And it will cost us untold billions to care for these Americans. Billy, the Village Idiot, and his ilk don't want people to think of the real ramifications, only the you rah rah, kill, kill, kill mantra that they have been spouting.

The Sheep need to look up.

Ding O'Reilly for his real journalistic sins

Bill O'Reilly is arrogant and annoying, but this article is quoting him out of context.

O'Reilly did not contest that an estimated 200,000 vets are currently homeless. But he contended those who are homeless are primarily on the streets because of mental illness and substance abuse (i.e., they would be there anyway).

What was mentioned by a guest and immediately glossed over by O'Reilly is the likely relationship between post traumatic stress disorder and the mental illness and drug use that has led to veterans' homelessness.

One guest pointed out that a great percentage of homeless vets were those who had seen combat.

Ignoring this important relationship between combat and stress-related illness is where O'Reilly needs to be criticized.

That omission is a far worse journalistic sin than the article's mischaracterization of O'Reilly's position as "there are no homeless vets."

the story really is the obvious relationship between PTSD and the lack of care for those who have it, and the inability of those with PTSD to make the transition back into society without any support.
i am getting really tirede of the 'fluff' factor on alternet, which seems more and more often to only graze the issue rather than hitting the important aspects and nuances of these issues directly (the kristol video is another example, the latest daily show posting also sux, etc etc etc...)

This is one poor, unfortunate slob of a human. Bill's so narrow and rigid and brimming with a self loathing that permeates his statements with a practiced, calloused disregard for decency or kindness. It's his way of feeling powerful.

It's a sad, sorry and joyless way for any human to be. Truly pathetic.

What have YOU done for your country? I spent 21+ years in the Navy and had two tours in the 'Nam. How about you? Why is it that those who badmouth veterans the most are those who did the LEAST in regards to military service. O'Reilly, you wouldn't make a wart on a veteran's arse, and are a disgrace to America and the great Irish people.

Odysseus managed to recover his home, but it has been the same story about veterans since the Trojan War.

Roman veterans came home after the second Punic war and found their farms foreclosed because of the debts they incurred when they could not farm while campaigning. Why should anyone expect anything else?

"When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?"

The reactionary comments from this story are great, especially the one about little Billy when he was a sexual predator. Mainstream media never seems to find out about this kind of stuff. Iam not computer savy enough but I know there is a way to convey this article and all its comments over to a more mainstream site such as youtube or similar site. Most of these folks dont even know that alternet exists. Cant wait to see some scumbag like little Billy, or Rush, or Howie, or Hannady plastered with big pictures all over some popular web site with their latest disgrace to our country. Between the 4 of them it wont take long to get a big story going, one of them is always sticking their dirty foot right in their ugly mouths.

BOR's got his marching orders...
Posted by: Astroboy on Jan 19, 2008 8:02 AM

...and he's on the attack.

Notice in the video of BOR's show how he goes down the line of candidates and comments with civility (for him, anyway) on Huckabilly, McCain, Clinton, Obama, etc., and leaving Edwards for last, rips into him with a vengence. BOR's entire demeanor instantly switches to anger, condesension and malice.
The contrast was revealing.

The reason BOR got it so wrong about the reality of homeless vets is that he really wasn't concerned at all about the issue. The issue at hand for BOR was - through whatever means possible - to tear down Edward's, so BOR grabbed out of thin air what he could, and ran with it. That's the reason why BOR did no investigating or vetting the claim Edwards made. It wasn't the point for BOR. The point was to do was he was told by his Neo-con handlers and assault and destroy Edwards.

So what I really take from all this is that the Neo-con Right Conservaturds are utterly and completely scared SHITLESS of John Edwards, which translates that maybe we should all jump off the Clinton and Obama bandwagons and hop on to John's.

And it's that this annoying fuck knows exactly what he's doing.

That's all he's got--making outrageously untrue statements so that the entire free world calls him a bonehead, and so Joe Califano can call him up and hear him say that "right" there are a couple hundred thousand homeless vets while we all watch. He doesn't contribute, even to the right-wing cause. It's all about how many people are watching his antics.

I've just realized how tired I am of these little O'Reilly screens, which just pander to a guy who's reduced to buffoonery to keep himself on the air. I'm not going to post under one of these ever again.

O'Reilly can shit in his hat, for all I'm concerned, and if we all turned our backs, he'd have nothing but a hatful of shit.

New Fox film about O'Rielly and Mythical Homeless Vets
Posted by: FollySpectator on Jan 20, 2008 1:18 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Maybe Hollywood would be interested in the following film plot. Golly, Fox even might like to produce it as an animated show.

(I don't know any homeless vets, either, actually, so O'Reilly really has a point. I guess this film wouldn’t fly.)

MOVIE PITCH
O'Reilly claims homeless vets are non-existent and this causes a disturbance in the ghost dimension. But O’Reilly doesn’t know this and thinks he has nothing to worry about even as the "non-existent" vets band together and use their military training to raid Fox and burn it to the ground after killing every single Fox employee except for janitors, receptionists and O'Reilly. The ghosts let the janitors and receptionists go.

What a ludicrous idea! Ghosts attacking Fox! Sheesh.

OK, after the first half where O'Reilly is captured, these non-existent homeless vets would then waterboard O'Reilly for days, making sure to keep him alive, then throw him off a tall building in homage to the 9/11 victims who jumped to their deaths from the WTC. The non-existent would then strike Murdoch's offices worldwide and take every Fox employee except for janitors and receptionists (sorry Simpsons writers) and feed them to sharks and tigers at aquariums and zoos where pay-per-view broadcasts would be coordinated with online Indian casino bets about which Fox employees will last the longest (probably the cameramen, but don't rule out makeup artists!).

The only problem is…it's TOTALLY UNBELIEVABLE!

Studio exec rejecting the idea: “People won’t pay to see a film with non-existent homeless vets united to storm Fox. No way! Why? Because movie viewers don't believe in homeless vets either. This film might gross $1.9 million tops, and then only after it gets a runner-up award at Sundance or Cannes.”

Script writer: “What about releasing it in 3-D!”

Studio exec still nixing the idea: “Doesn’t matter. The non-existent can't hear a call to arms, can't organize, can't use their formidable training, and can't attack. That’s as ludicrous as the idea that Iraq II is breeding a whole army of Timothy McVeighs, that nut-job vet from first Iraq war, who wasn’t homeless, by the way.”

Studio exec coming around: “Wait. Think about this: Santa and Superman don't exist either but people pay to watch them crush their enemies (bad boy and girl and grownup behavior)! Lumps of coal, kryptonite, ghostly AK-47s, throw it all together and this might work …. Let me call Carl.”

Studio exec running with it: “Carl will consider it. But to make sure the film has a PG-13 rating, these non-existent Iraq-II war homeless vets will have to make sure not to kill children like that idiot McVeigh. This lowers the film’s budget, too, since all that expensive pyro stuff would be unnecessary. The mythical ghost vets would use ghostly guns to finish off Fox employees after months of gathering ghostly intel on every Fox employee worldwide. All it takes is a big crystal ball plus some green screen, some plastic guns, lumps of coal and some cheap kryptonite, from South Africa or China I guess.”

Dear AlterNet Readers,

Please feel modify or add to this bad script. It needs your help.

O'Rieley couldn't give a rats ass about our veterans,if they're handicapped or homeless ,to him they're money in the bank, his money, and his ''big word'' a day deal makes him even more the bufoon, sad thing is ,he cries all the way to the bank! very difficult to get an email in to his show [tv.] and on his radio show if you've nailed him w/one negative seeming question you'll never get in again, where are the FAUX police when you want their visit??....so lets see how many good comments we get on this one.
