This video summary originally appeared on The Huffington Post

Mark Ebner, the investigative reporter, just emailed us links to some Scientology promotional videos. Morton's central claim is that Cruise, star of movies from Risky Business to Mission Impossible, is the effective number two of the Church of Scientology, the cultish religion founded by L. Ron Hubbard, and subscribed to by other eccentric Hollywood actors such as John Travolta. The videos bear out, at the very least, that Cruise is central to the organization's marketing efforts. In this amazing clip, to a background track of theme from Mission Impossible, Cruise explains how Scientologists are "the authorities on the mind", the only people who can bring peace and unite cultures.

Hollywood stars as life experts

I don't see how anyone can listen seriously to an actor--especially a Hollywood actor--to give important life advice.

They can't even handle their own lives properly, and they want to pontificate to others?

The great playwright Moss Hart in his book Act One said that the theatre is inevitable refuge of the unhappy child. And I think that is an on-the-mark judgement of people in the acting business.

"Cruise explains how Scientologists are 'the authorities on the mind', the [only] people who can bring peace and unite cultures."

That sounds like a pretty divisive statement to me.

If they've got all these "tools" to fix all our problems, why are they keeping all these secrets? Why don't they just give us the f*cking tools already!

It'a such a teaser!

Oh, you have to earn them. I see! You have to snuggle up to a Scientologist and let him or her guide you in. Hmm.

Why Criticize Scientology and Accept Christianity?

Frankly, I think we should be grateful for Scientology. From what I've been able to discern, it's all about improving humankind, helping and creating, as opposed to destroying the infidels (Islam), defeating and/or conquering unbelievers (Christianity) dictating war and torture (Christianity & Islam), and trying to control others' sexuality (Christianity, Islam). I'm not religious, but consider this: all religions are created equal, since all are based on belief and faith rather than reason, logic and fact. Why not embrace those religions which seek to help and unite rather than those which seek to defeat, destroy and conquer?

TC's video cannot be measured using the normal standards for "wacko-nutso." Cruise is proof positive that one needs nary a living brain cell to collect hunks of cash and adoring followers in this dumbified country. All one needs to do is have a national platorm from which to sell their buffoonery to others. The sucker line is endless.

The music alone is enough to drive any sane person batshit looney. It make me yearn to hear a good Gregorian chant.

Tom Cruise doesn't need any help sounding more then a little crazy & disjointed but come on, this was pathetic. Not hearing the questions or comments you have no idea what he is responding to and that last bit where he is lauging - he sounds demented. Give the man credit, he is passionate about the topic & well informed about his beliefs. There is no need to make him look like the village idiot.

You cut out bits of this interview, and did not play it though it's conclusion. How is anybody going to truly get a understanding of what he's saying with out any set up of the subject matter.. You throw your readers in a lecture room when people are talking about a subject like this that people hear in the media every day because It's "Controversial" Might as well been a speech by Stephan Hawkins about space-time theory. Of course most people are going to kill the messenger if they get the wrong message. This is the nature of apathy in our country and it is exactly the point Mr Cruise is trying to get across..

Authority on the Mind

Luke 24:44-48

Jesus said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."

Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.

He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.

The good thing about this is that--as eccentric celebrities go--he makes Britney appear sane and well-grounded. She just wants to be left alone with all her personalities and her hair extensions. This guy sounds like he wants to take over the world...kind of like Brain from Pinky and the Brain.

Without a script, Cruise is a dimwit. I laughed out loud when watching this poor thing try to think and talk at the same time. My 8-year old does better than this pretty boy.

Does anyone need more evidence that actors and models are not hired for their brains. Can we stop listening to them give advice about anything now?

I live near Clearwater, FL where these nutjobs have their 'land base'. And let me tell you, they are the most dangerous group in this country. People have been killed trying to leave the "religion", people are harrassed day in and day out. L Ron Hubbard was a con man, and a hypnotist. The 'church' has the Clearwater PD in their pocket, so people boycotting the cult are hassled and bullied in front of the police and they sit like the whores they are, and watch. THESE PEOPLE ARE DANGEROUS. SCIENTOLOGY IS A CULT. Why was David Koresh and the Branch Davidians massacred, and these people (who are far more dangerous) are left to their own devices.

WE NEED SOMETHING DONE NOW!!!

Scientology...Sad but true. The information is available to everyone for FREE, if we only searched. This guy here had to pay his way in to gain "some" knowledge and then pay some more to go to the next level! It's truly a sad scene. We all have the "IT" within to reach what we are looking for. We set foot on this earth to learn, become and move to the next phase of our journey.

Be apprised...Christianity, Scientology and ALL other belief and faith systems are GREAT MIND pillagers which hold back science and human understanding wherever they spring up.

It does not require belief in a lame imbecilic faith-based system to improve mankind or bring understanding to the world. Man is endowed with a 3 Billion-year-old continually evolving brain which seeks, with exercised logic and clarity of thought, to understand this world, this universe, and to help his fellow man. No appeal to a NON-EXISTANT GOD or other MAN-MADE diety is required!

Stand outside at night after a cleansing cold rain and look up at the twinkling amazing universe we live in and know that you are the ONLY creature on this earth, and probably in the non-inhabited nearby universe, which understands the enormity of what you see and can wonder and understand because of your ability to THINK and REASON.

Embracing ANY RELIGION or BELIEF system is a fantasy and a crime against humanity!. For us to progress we must fight the fantasy of religion and belief systems! Be free forever...think and reason without fear or fantasy!

Standard psychological approach of religious cults
Posted by: thoughtcriminal on Jan 19, 2008 11:42 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
""It was in the post-War period that the PR industry, the advertising industry, the press agent industry, what the psychologist Robert Shalldini calls ‘the compliance industries’, really took off. These things grew exponentially in the 1920s in the US and provide the world with a model – and the world of course includes Germany. Goebbels himself was a reader of the work of Edward Bernays. Bernays was Freud’s nephew on both sides of his family. Here is a guy for whom the idea of the unconscious was his mother’s milk. What makes Bernays important is that he is the first PR guy to apply social psychology strategically and use theories of the unconscious in propaganda technique. Bernays is no mere theorist. He put his ideas to work for a number of corporations as well as for government." - Stuart Ewen

Those techniques were adopted by various religious cults over the 20th century as well - and Scientology is a good example. This Tom Cruise video might seem idiotic to an outsider, but for a new Scientology recruit, it's probably powerful stuff - new, secret knowledge to be revealed! You've passed Stage One - now you're ready for an introduction to the Mysteries of Scientology - as a Stage Two acolyte.

Pyramid schemes work the same way. This is just boilerplate stuff - but it is very sad to see people getting sucked into it by clever con artists.

Kids should really be taught about psychological manipulation techniques in grade school - think of it as teaching them mental self-defense skills.

and I knew people who knew him. They formed a group who wrote science fiction, and would get together to write and share their efforts. Mr. Hubbard told the group that his life plan was to make up a religion that would attract gullible masses so he would make a fortune. The group paid no attention, but that is just what he did.
