How Can Chris Matthews Hate Hillary So Publicly and Get Away With It?

Posted by Melissa McEwan, Shakesville at 2:09 PM on January 9, 2008.

Sexist Chris Matthews claims that Hillary's entire political career and success is the result of public sympathy over Bill Clinton's past adultery.

Last night, in the comments of Jeff's awesome Angry Women Back Clinton post, I said, "I'm frankly a lot less optimistic than you are that tonight's inspiring and refreshing and generally fantastic repudiation of institutional misogyny will last. It will raise its head again in this campaign. Mark my words. I'd bet money on seeing an example tomorrow."

Today:

Last night, Matthews said: "I give her a lot of personal credit; I will never underestimate Hillary Clinton again."

But by this morning Matthews had already forgotten his newfound respect for her. He said: "The reason she's a U.S. Senator, the reason she's a candidate for President, the reason she may be a front-runner, is her husband messed around. That's how she got to be Senator from New York. We keep forgetting it. She didn't win it on the merits..."

In good news, the other part of my comment was this: "That doesn't undermine what happened tonight, though. It was awesome. And it was worth a good few teaspoons."

Keep talking, Tweety, you misogynist wankstain. Underestimate her all the way to the White House.

UPDATE via Richard Blair @ All Spin Zone: At the Risk of Being Redundent...

MS-NBC's Chris Matthews flew totally off the rails last night as the positive results trickled in for Hillary Clinton . It was clear that even NBC anchor emeritus Tom Brokaw was taken aback by Matthew's vitriolic rants. Note to MS-NBC boss Dan Abrams: Tweety needs some time off.

There was a period of time around 9:30PM on primary night in New Hampshire that MS-NBC pundit and host Chris Matthews rolled totally off the rails. Coverage by the network was bad enough, but when Matthews said the following (from my live blogging of the evening), I almost blew out a chip on my laptop as I transcribed his drivel:

"I wouldn't put it past the Clintons if it looked like it was moving toward a victory for Barack to pull a quick press conference while it's still vague and say it's too early to tell and go to bed with some kind of vague victory statement."

This is word for word. I'm sure there's a YouTube of this moment floating around somewhere, or perhaps on the MS-NBC transcript of the remarks.

Between Chris Matthews and Andrea Mitchell, there could not be a more vitriolic pair of "reporters" dogging Hillary's campaign. I mean, I know that Mitchell dislikes HRC tremendously - and it comes through so clearly in her live reporting - but someone in Matthew's position has got to exhibit a degree of restraint. His mouth should have been in restraints last night.

I'm still having a hard time processing that a network anchor such as Matthews all but accused the Clinton campaign of getting ready to stage a victory dance if it looked like Obama was going to pull out a win in New Hampshire later in the night. And the way that he spewed his venom - the look on his face, the tone of his voice - was almost frightening.

I don't know if Chris Matthews needs a vacation or what, but clearly, he needs some time off. I hope that MS-NBC boss Dan Abrams reviews the coverage today, and gives Matthews some forced time off.

There is no place for that kind of behavior (allowing a personal distaste for a candidate) to drift into network coverage. None.

I'm sick of the sexism of stories like these

I'm getting really tired of all this whining. To assume that any man who opposes or even questions Hillary Clinton, is doing so because she is a woman is ridiculous. That supposition is sexist!

It would be refreshing to see some stories about why you think Hillary is the best candidate. There have been so many "poor Hillary" articles here lately. I'm sure that there is plenty of sexism and misogyny in the country. I wish we could throw a switch and instantly level the playing field. But, we can't. Hillary has an uphill climb. I'm sure she knows this.

For every challenge she comes up against because of her gender, there's another place in the campaign where she's used her gender to her advantage. Hell, she's apparently got tons of female writers in the progressive press who are ready to fight to the death for her simply BECAUSE she's a woman. That these people completely disregard the fact that she's got a HORRIBLE voting record on some very important issues is what bothers me.

The movement for equality is done a disservice by people who would vote for a bad female candidate BECAUSE she's a woman. I'm really excited about the day that we inaugurate the first female president. But, I'd rather the first female president be a woman who will make a mark and kick the doors open for women coming up behind her. Someone who will make a real change and make the country wonder why it took so long for us to put a woman in charge. I don't want just another "business as usual" corporate sellout who will spend her entire term worrying about how to get re-elected.

If you really want to stand up for women, then put the heat on Hillary and make her a better candidate. And, stop assuming that any man who questions her is doing it because they're sexist. It's ridiculous and embarrassing. If Hillary really thinks that Chris Matthews disapproves of her because she's a woman, then she should go on his show and confront him about it. I can't stand the guy, and I'd like to watch him squirm. But, I bet that she'd also face plenty of her own uncomfortable questions, many of them not related to her gender.

Shill reasons for opposing Hillary

There are so many reasons to oppose Hillary, it is a travesty for trivializing her power. Hillary is a warmonger and a corporatist fascist. A true Stealth Republican, Clinton recieves the majority of her finiancing from Wall St. defense contractors and Rupert Murdoch. See her scary performance on U Tube by searching "Hillary Clinton AIPAC" to see her famous performace threatening Iran with nuckear attack. Then for grins search " Rev. Hagee AIPAC", the Christian Zionist cultist using the same rhetoric. Why does Hillary kow tow to the Israeli Lobbly??? Because she is in the same camp as American oil and Dick Cheney; out to stealoil from the weak nations of the world. Today Iraq, tomorrow Iran and then on to Venezuela and Russia? Shameful or shameless?

If you want to see an anti-progressive bias watch CNBC for about a week, or just one episode of Kudlow's show. Little side remarks and comments that would make a Faux Newz Anchor blush are the norm.

The recession has toned it down a little, but not by much.

MSNBC needs to replace Matthews with Laura Flanders.

I don't normally do these blogs but I just read the one by "herbal" and I have to tell you, he/she must be on some type of herbals to spout all that nonesense!

In regards to Chris Mathews, I have generally enjoyed him but lately he has become very anti-Hillary and that really bothers me. Some men just cannot deal with an intelligent, strong willed woman....says more about them than about Hillary. I was so thrilled when all those pundits who were ready to write her off after Iowa ended up with all that egg on their face. I'm finally starting to think the American people are actually waking up and paying attention and not letting the press spoon feed them on what they should do. I had lost all confidence in them when they let the media bamboozle them into believing the Bush would be a good president, not once but twice....with the help of the Supreme Court and a little ballot trickery!
Go Hillary!

If he had made equally blatant racist comments, most people would call him on it.

Someone should announce that the only reason Tweety has a job is because he sucks up to corporations and the wealthy - not due to any merit.

I must remind myself that identity "feminists" have a corner on virtue.

Allow me to provide you, Melissa, with some examples of "feminine virtue":

Margaret Thatcher, that wonderful example of "feminine virtue", who singlehandedly destroyed the English middle-class, and famously declared, "There is no such thing as society."

Nancy Pelosi, another fine example of "feminine virtue", who, in stark contrast to her campaign "promises", morphed into a rabid Bush enabler once she assumed her position as "the first female Speaker of the House."

Madeleine Albright, former US secretary of State and another outstanding example of "feminine virtue" and "grace", who, when interviewed by Leslie Stahl, declared--and I quote--

Stahl: "We have heard that a half a million children have died [because of sanctions against Iraq]. I mean that’s more children than died in Hiroshima. And–you know, is the price worth it?"

Albright: "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price--we think the price is worth it."

That's quite the "maternal instinct" you have there, Madeleine.

And last, but not least, we have the quintessential example of "feminine virtue", Griselda Blanco, who just happens to be the world's most prolific psychopath/cocaine "importer"--not to mention serial killer.

Would you like me to continue? I thought not.

My, that's some "corner" on the "virtue" market. I'm impressed.

I never get to hear what he says, because if I see his face, I switch to a channel with commentators that make sense.

It must be a slow day in the world, with no more campaign angles, nothing much going on with Bush, and nothing more to say about the war or the recession if you're treating this guy as though he matters.

Even while Matthews poses as a journalist, he is really a lobbiest for NBC. NBC is owned by GE, who is the beneficiary of tons of war contracts. The right wing doesn't want the kind of peace and prosperity that came out of the last Clinton White House. All of NBC, Russert et al, are out to get Hillary, before she has the chance to steal their dream as President. Obama is easier for the GOP to take out in November.
