Will MSNBC Fire Tucker Carlson and Hire Rosie O'Donnell?

I'm not all that much of a Rosie fan, though I wish her well in life. But I'll have a little party if Tucker Carlson is canned from MSNBC, as it is long overdue. Then he can take his partisan Republican crap over to FoxNews where it belongs.

Let's get it straight from the outset. I have nothing against Rosie O'Donnell, but I don't like her as a political host, as is rumored in a column in the New York Times today. Rosie is simply easy for the conservative whack jobs to lampoon. I've no problem with MSNBC hiring someone as liberal as Rosie, but I'd like it to be a professional journalist. Call me a traditionalist.

On the other hand, I'm thrilled that they're thinking of firing Tucker Carlson. From the NYTimes:

Lest there be any doubt that the cable channel believes there is ratings gold in shows that criticize the administration with the same vigor with which Fox News's hosts often champion it, two NBC executives acknowledged yesterday that they were talking to Rosie O'Donnell about a prime-time show on MSNBC.

. . .

During the nine months she spent on "The View" before departing abruptly last spring, Ms. O'Donnell raised viewership notably. She did so while lamenting the unabated casualties of the Iraq war and advocating the right to gay marriage, among other positions.

Under one option, Ms. O'Donnell would take the 9 p.m. slot each weeknight on MSNBC, pitting her against "Larry King Live" on CNN and "Hannity & Colmes" on Fox News.

But even without Ms. O'Donnell, MSNBC already presents a three-hour block of nighttime talk -- Chris Matthews's "Hardball" at 7, Mr. Olbermann at 8, and "Live With Dan Abrams" at 9 -- in which the White House takes a regular beating. The one early-evening program on MSNBC that is often most sympathetic to the administration, "Tucker" with Tucker Carlson at 6 p.m., is in real danger of being canceled, said one NBC executive, who, like those who spoke of Ms. O'Donnell, would do so only on condition of anonymity

Yeah, Tucker Carlson bugs me, and it's been a pleasure over the last couple years watching him change his image, ditching the stupid bow tie, for instance, in an effort to hang on by a thread to a position as a TV News host. In fairness, I've a little experience with Tucker from a couple years ago, and you can read the transcript of that time here. But it's more than that. Tucker was an apologist for the Bush Administration early in their run-up to the failed Iraq War, and he's been apologizing since. And this guy distorts a Democratic stance at least once a show.

It's time to get rid of Tucker Carlson, MSNBC. Even getting rid of the stupid bow tie hasn't made him a decent commentator. Remember, Tucker Carlson is the guy who admitted to beating up a guy who made a pass at him, and seems to have compared Barak Obama to a pothead. He doesn't have to like Obama, but it would be nice if Carlson could stick to the issues. That's pure crap that no news network should associate with.

Please let this rumor be true

But as much as I loathe Tucker and like the idea of an honest-to-god liberal on prime time, I was rooting for David Shuster to take that slot. As volatile as Rosie is, I predict she won't last too long. On the other hand, she should pull in some viewers. If she is smart, she will prominently feature David on her program.

Rosie's heart is in the right place but I think it is not only gonna be easy for the right to lampoon her, but to portray her as extremist.

A sitting member of Congress is introducing a measure to impeach the vice president of the United States and the story isn't visible on Alternet. This should be the leading story on a website that bills itself as an "alternative" to the mainstream. Some alternative! More like left gatekeeper.

For those who are interested in doing something constructive about our current state of affairs, please call your representative and urge them to support Mr. Kucinich's bill. The Capitol switchboard is:

1-800-828-0498
1-800-862-5530
1-800-833-6354

Just ask the operator for your representative's office. If you don't know it, tell her/him where you live and she/he will look it up. Once transferred to your representative's office, politely tell the person who answers the phone that you urge your representative to support Kucinich's articles of impeachment against the vice president. You will probably be asked for your name and address.

I just did this. It's the first time I had ever called my representative (Rodney Frelinghuysen in NJ). It was easy and I felt better after doing it.

I doubt this is true. MSNBC, as a news organization, can't can't can't hire someone with Ms. O'Donnell's resume, partly because they have no one to balance out her heavily liberal views, and also because, as the blog states, she is not a journalist. Now, journalism is not a regulated profession; there is no license to practice journalism required to work in that field. But even those who agree with her opinions wholeheartedly would have to admit that she has no journalistic cred, and American journalism, which is already in a sorry state, will have taken another blow if she is hired as a host.
Fox News is admitting that their hosts (Hannity, O'Reilly) are not journalists but commentators and their shows are simply "opinion based programs." We cannot accept that as an excuse. The public deserves better and MSNBC should not stoop to that level.

Now on the topic of Tucker. He is just about the most reasonable conservative you'll find on cable. He's sharp, good-natured, and more than willing to find common ground when he disagrees with a guest. I have a problem with the some of the partisan hacks his show gives a voice to, and sometimes he strikes me as lazy and formulaic, but then who on these networks isn't?

If they hire Rosie, I might start to think there is a grain of truth when Fox attacks NBC of being ideologically driven. In the absence of objectivity, there must at least be balance.

Tucker Carlson: hmm. Let's see, is he the fellow who recently giggled about bashing the head of a man who came on to him in a public restroom?

I'm not by any means an advocate of public sex in men's rooms (or ladies' rooms, for that matter). But I'm even less of an advocate of bashing the heads of someone who happens to offend you, and then boasting and giggling about it on national t.v.

Seems to me a cheap way to buy some masculinity.

If for no other reason, I'll be happy to see Mr. Carlson go. A decision to can him would be a decision to find this kind of violence and braggadocious adolescent "masculinity" less than ideal for our culture henceforward.

Tucker Carlson might be questioning his own masculinity

I wonder if the reason for Mr. Carlsons' alleged violence toward a homosexual may be a reaction to his doubts about his own sexuality. From my own observation (and no, I'm not gay), the people most likely to react violently toward gay people are people who are somewhat insecure about their own sexual identity. Additionaly, I cna't even imagine a somewhat "wimpy" guy like Tucker beating up on anyone, except maybe a younger female sibling. He probably made it all up to make himself feel more "manly".

doesn't need to be in his spot either. The world doesn't need a Liberal Bill O'Reilly. Maybe if the World Weekly News or the Enquirer had a show, she would be a good choice. Television "news" is already a wasteland.

I agree that David Shuster deserves his own show and should take that 9:00 spot after Keith. I really hope MSNBC will not hire Rosie -- I agree with many of her positions but I think she would be a liability for the network. Given how much time as I spend wishing my Republican friends and family members would watch Keith just one time and maybe learn something, I know Rosie's presence on his network would mean fewer viewers would give him a chance.

If I knew her in real life, we might end up being friends, but what might be fun in private doesn't necessarily make for the best public approach. I think her having a political talk show would do nothing to elevate the pretty poor quality of political discussion we have on the airwaves, and that's what we really need. I wouldn't say she'd be worse than Tucker Carlson, but I don't think she'd be better. It would be an insult to us all if MSNBC, in search of ratings, felt that liberals would be happier with an emotional hot-head to do our yelling for us rather than someone with temperance and reason representing us.

Aside From Keith, Wes Clark; MSNBC Is Unwatchable

Tucker Carlson's spoiled-brat-rich-kid-boy-soprano demeanor is so nauseous; he wins the prize as the most pathetic personality on a network specializing in actual former spoiled rich kids . Think Tucker, Alex Witt, Dan Abrams, Mika Brezinsky, Erin Burnett, Willie Geist. David Gregory, Nora O'Donnell. Throw in all the other screeching boy sopranos; Chris Matthews, Pat /Bay Buchanan ( they are the same people aren't they...ever seen them together?? ), Terry Jeffries, Joe Scarborough and adding Rosie seems logical as the caboose at the end of the train wreck.
There is an alternative to selecting Rosie as a replacement for Tucker and I nominate Rachel Maddow! Unlike Rosie , Rachel Maddow is a lesbian who is actually intelligent, articulate, witty and engaging. Besides that, Rachel and Keith have already demonstrated wonderful chemistry and would certainly be excellent complements of each other.

Now if they want to replace Tucker with a balanced woman give it to Whoopi Goldberg. If you missed her short lived talk show it was one of the best. She gets her facts and never beats her guest up. Even when she interviewed the head of the nazi party in America she maintained her cool and let his own words show him for a fool. Remember when the trash talk show wars were going on that is when Whoopi show was on .Late at night. She would not do trash talk so she lost out,but it was an excellent show. Why not a strong black lady on opinion TV. We all might gain a new perspective. If not Whoopi how about someone else of color .We are tired of all the white men or loudmouthed white women. Be creative

Do NOT hire Rosie.

Go for Rachael Maddow. Or David schuster. Or half a dozen other people.

If the brass at MSNBC think people watch keith o just because he is "liberal" they're wrong.

I watch keith because he is the most brilliant writer on TV. He is a NEWSMAN with an articulate voice. To put rosie and Keith in the same sentence is a joke.

MSNBC needs to stick with journalists, not celebrities.

I have long wondered

I have long wondered WHY Tucker Carlson has been allowed to preach his ultra conservative rhetoric for so long at MSNBC. Aside from being the founder and original member of the "He-Man Hillary Clinton-Haters Club", he is completely out of step with Matthews, Olbermann and Dan Abrams, at every turn - with a vengeance. We already have two accomplished DIVIDERS running the country; we do not need a third hosting news at MSNBC.

Olbermann should be nominated for a Nobel Prize, for his scathing indictment of G.W. Bush on 3 July 2007; Carlson, a mouthpiece and puppet for the NeoCon movement, certainly does not deserve to share the same air with such a vanguard of American Journalism. As Tucker heads for the nearest fire (fired?) exit, a far better choice than Rosie would be David Schuster or David Gregory. In a perfect world they would share anchor duties with Hillary Rosen, comprising an intellectual triad who could offer fresh insights into the politics of our nation, possibly even above and beyond the excellence of the existing trinity - Matthews, Olbermann and Abrams. At worst, they would be the perfect compliment to an already fine broadcast team at MSNBC.

I suspect FAUX news has already begun behind the scenes negotiations with Carlson and it is just a matter of time until he joins their rotating cast of circus characters masquerading as credible news journalists. In closing, I think we can all agree with John Stewart's assessment of Carlson during his appearance on the Carlson co-hosted "Crossfire - he is an A-hole. Perhaps not as big an A-hole as our fearless leaders in the #1 & #2 slots in D.C., but razor close...

Des

Post Script:

It is entirely possible that Carlson is on the air at MSNBC for the sole purpose of capturing a percentage of the Faux News audience market share. Hmmm - in which case we must question the integrity and business ethic of MSNBC.

Everybody makes a big deal about Tucker and this mystery altercation with another male over an unwanted proposition. My question is; did anyone check out his story? This may be a fabricated lie to show that he is a macho man. To be honest the first time I ever saw Tucker on television and to date; I have always thought of Tucker to fall in the class of being in the "closet". I know he is married, but let's face it; Ann Coulter is manlier than Tucker. He seemed to be trying a bit harder than before to separate himself from guys like Senator “Wide Stance” Larry Craig. The same thing Larry did when speaking out against and condemning homosexuals. Makes me wonder!

So the Right will lampoon Rosie? Fine. The more they attack her, the clearer will become the line distinguishing right from left in this country. That's why I'm doubtful that Rosie will get the job. If she does, it'll be perplexing to me. Why, I'll wonder, would MSNBC, which obviously favors the political right, Olberman notwithstanding, hire someone as controversial, as outspoken, as Rosie? Can't be. Something's wrong here. Olberman's mere presence on MSNBC is far from enough to placate the left. We need balance of right/left thinking, and a ratio of 9 to 1, conservative/liberal, won't deliver the goods. Putting Rosie in the lineup, would chancge the rartio to 8/2, god forbid! That would be dangerously close to right/left balance. It's possible. But I'll believe it when I see it.

Put TOM HARTMAN, RANDI RHODES, RACHAEL MADDOW, on a cable network and Air America Television would be born, and definitely for the good of political discourse in this country. Realistically, subplant TUCKER with any one of the three and watch MSNBC ratings go through the roof. TUCKER is such an ignorant, self absorbed, ego maniac that his show would go un noticed in the grand scheme of television history.

He is emotionally a child with an uncontrollable obsession for hating Hillary Clinton. That he absolutely uncontrollably loathes Hillary is palpable; his show then, therefore, like all neurosis is so predictable that it is boring and very predictable.................. Talks between Rosie and MSNBC fell flat. Rosie will only commit to doing a TV show for a year and MSNBC wanted her to commit to at least two, due to their advertising schedule.

Little known fun fact: Rosie was Phil Donahue's last guest the night before MSNBC pulled his plug (Another little known fun fact: TED NUGENT was scheduled to be on Donahue's show the next day... thank god that never happened!!). It would have been nice to have possibly seen Rosie return the "favor" by having Donahue guest on her new show. Que sera sera...

Word is that MSNBC wants more liberal shows (Thank Keith Olbermann!!) Maybe ... just maybe ... Donahue will return after all. ;-)
