Why Is Saturday Night Live Shilling for Hillary Clinton's Campaign?

It's weird. Weird like....well, Pat Buchanan praising Hillary Clinton.

Let's face it, the Republicans love Hillary Clinton. They quietly in their heart of hearts pine for her to win the Democratic nomination. The Republican Governor of Florida is rolling out the red carpet for a second primary which will favor Clinton. Pat Buchanan can't be quiet about how much he respects Hillary. Even Ann Coulter pal and SNL sketch writer Jim Downey has written several sketches portraying Hillary as picked on by the press. Downey is one of the all time great sketch writers but I know he's no Hillary fan. Don't get me wrong, I like Hillary and still think Bill Clinton is one of our great presidents. But it's weird. Weird like....well, Pat Buchanan praising Hillary Clinton.

Now it's possible the corporate right wants her to win in order to keep afloat the huge economy of Hillary hate bumper stickers that if my numbers are correct generates over 55 billion dollars in revenue for the south.* They also could be supporting her because after over seven years of the absolute incompetence that is the Bush administration they finally get that corporate welfare and tax breaks for millionaires are not good for the economy. Or maybe they think she's Hilary Swank.

But more likely, in fact, screw it, for sure, they are backing her the way I root for Nenad Krstic to cover Kevin Garnett so the Big Ticket can put up twenty and twenty on him.

And yes, it's sad that someone as capable as Hillary would be considered fodder for McCain, a "don't change horses in mid-stream, even when it takes that horse twelve years to cross that stream" kind of guy. Senator McCain just got the thumbs up from Bush. Isn't an endorsement from W like a job reference from that astronaut chick who lost it and wore diapers? Well, she is an astronaut and Bush is president.

The biggest upside of this whole thing is that SNL has clearly still got clout even in this day of a thousand channels and a billion internet sites. They influenced a primary for F's sake. That's big. Now I wrote for the show in the nineties and it's an incredible place that's actually as exciting as it seems like it would be. I've seen SNL have incredible political influence in a good way (Dennis Miller's line about Reagan: "It scares me when the finger nearest the button has a string tied around it.") and a bad way (Portraying Bush and Gore as equally buffoonish in their debates. Bush was an embarrassment and the sketch made people think they were in the same ballpark.). It's had its left wing writers like Al Franken and it's right-wing writers like Jim Downey, who also wrote those Bush-Gore debates sketches. Franken is now running for the Senate and Downey is spinning primaries.

There's no doubt our nation's comedic TV political coverage between SNL, the Daily Show and the Colbert Report is far better than the straight news. And though that's a pithy and tired observation, it's also stone cold, for better or for worse, true.

So put your bumper stickers on your cars Repubs: "Hillary in '08, Up Until November, and then McCain!" If you drive an Excursion it'll fit.

*My numbers were not correct.

Editor's Note: The video attached to this blog aired this Saturday on SNL. It ends with Hillary (played by the incredibly funny and gifted Amy Poehler) giving the number for the DNC and urging voters to call and say they've changed their minds about Barack Obama...

This doesn't look like shilling for anybody. If anything, it's slightly anti-Clinton, pointing out the absurdity of her message that Obama is an inexperienced idiot, and that she's cool-headed, knowledgeable, and experienced.

It's typical SNL. Not very imaginative. Lame imitations, lousy scripts, and talentless, cue-card reading amateurs trying to get their name out there so they can quit and go make crappy movies.

In terms of politics, I get the sense that they deliberately try to keep their sketches politically ambivalent: just liberal enough to appear marginally edgy for the late-night demographic, but not enough to offend Middle America. Good comedy often offends and pushes the boundaries. SNL tries to give the appearance that it does, without actually doing so...one of many reasons why it sucks.

The contrast is misleading. They simply don't hate her. Clinton gets bashed from so many corners that people who like her become suspect. Let's not forget that this is done to make people laugh. Amy Poeller does a great imitation of Clinton and that's what SNL is about. Making us laugh. I'll take it. Thanks, ANNA

The answer is obvious

Three straight weeks, SNL has opened with a sketch that is pro-Hillary. I realize this one was technically supposed to make light of Clinton's campaign tactics, but since it spends five minutes making Obama look like a buffoon and Clinton a genius, it's hardly anything that the Clinton campaign is going to be upset about. Negative campaigning works, and this is just more of it.

But it's ridiculous to think that a sketch comedy show like SNL would have any preference on the matter, right? Unless, of course, they have a talented and capable performer to spoof Hillary Clinton and currently nobody remotely able to do the same for Barack Obama. Fred Armisen may be talented in many regards, but his Obama is awful. So they do have a vested interest in how this plays out.

I continue to be astound at the level of bias on Alternet towards Hillary. They have no credibility left in my book; they do not speak for progressives, they speak for Obama.
I also find it fascinating, when the press FINALLY starts to point out the lopsided bias towards Hillary and the powder puff hands off approach to Obama, all you Obamites start screaming "it's unfair". But it's OK to constantly attack Hillary? Please, grow up and gain a little maturity then maybe you can make a sound decision about who should be our candidate. Obama is so much better than a lot of his supporters! Then the writer makes a big deal out of the fact that Pat Buchanon said something complimentary about Hillary, like that makes her evil. If he was complimenting Obama, you would all be saying.."Oh look how he can cross over party lines and build consensus"......"he's able to draw the support of Republicans".....like I said, grow up, before I throw up!

ADVICE TO OBAMA CAMPAIGN: GO NEGATIVE, BUT NOT PERSONAL.

ADVICE TO OBAMA CAMPAIGN: GO NEGATIVE, BUT NOT PERSONAL.

THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WILL UNDERSTAND THAT YOU NEED TO DEFEND YOURSELF AGAINST INCOMING ATTACKS FROM THE CLINTONS WHO WOULD STOP AT NOTHING TO GAIN POWER.

YOU WILL BE DOING AMERICA A FAVOR. SO ATTACK ON NOT RELEASING TAX RETURNS, DONORS TO CLINTON LIBRARY, FIRST LADY RECORDS. IF YOU ARE ATTACKED ON ETHICS RETURN FIRE WITH FIRE (HSU, CLINTON PARDONS, ETC.). ATTACK ON HER BEING DEVISIVE AND HER NOMINATION LEADING TO CONSERVATIVES GETTING RILED UP TO VOTE.
THE LIST CAN GO ON AND ON, ...

DO NOT DISARM AND CONTINUE TO TAKE INCOMING FIRE, WITHOUT RETURNING FIRE!!!

The "hillary group" doesn't seem to grasp exactly what she has done. I have never heard ANY dem candidate trash another dem candidate in favor of the repug nominee! NEVER. This is the most whacked thing Ms. "I am so honored to be on the stage with Barack Obama" has done yet! UNBELIEVABLE!

As a former (Bill) Clinton supporter throughout ALL of the 1990's (yes, even during the KEN STARR ERA...........), this form of post-victory pile-on and crowing from the HRC camp are totally disgusting, and I think this new stuff (MCCAIN IS SUCH A GREAT GUY... OBAMBA = KEN STARR etc) is the final straw for me personally. Up until now, I would have been a loyal Democrat like I always am and punched the button for her in November, despite the lack of enthusiasm and the misgivings... but now I don't think I can do it even if I hold my nose with a garlic strand around my neck.

If she pulls this off and manages to swindle the nomination, I will:

A. withdraw from the Democratic party rolls, cease contribution, and register as an independent.

B. Write-in Senator Obama's name in November and encourage all of my fellow Obama supporters and friends to do the same.

Five months is plenty of time to organize a write-in campaign.

The Clintonistas are treating the party (and have done this since the beginning- it was quaint at first but now it isn't funny) as if it were their own personal organization that they built and we're just their employees. We are called the DEMOCRATIC party for a REASON. Entitlement is not and should not be a part of our process. If that's what you want, why don't you follow Joe Lieberman over to the new "left" wing of the Republican Party- HRC clearly seems to be paying lip-service to that approach.

Super Delegates have a DUTY to the Democratic Party to defend it from enemies without and within. Super Delegates have a DUTY to set limits on the morality, loyalty and decency of their candidates. If they do not respond to her support of a Republican in this campaign then they all deserve to be fired.

I would rather lose with an honorable Obama than win with a Traitorous McClinton.
Enough is enough. Set some standards of decency. Stand up to the Clinton slime machine, Get a grip and make a stand.

I think as Democrats we should petition the DNC to call for Mrs. Clinton's removal as a candidate since she has endorsed the Republican candidate thereby sabotaging not only Mr. Obama's candidancy, but her own as well. She's no Democrat, but a closet neocon Republican.

PHONE THE DNC: 1-202-479-5100

As Americans we should be outraged not only at the tactics of the Clinton campaign, but also at the audacity of elevating the candidate of the opposition party over a democratic candidate currently leading in delegate counts.

The Super Delegates should be running from Hillary and Bill Clinton. She has shown them that she would rather tear the party down and endorse the Republican candidate than lose the primary to Obama.

Comedy Gets to the Absurdities of Politics and Campaigns

The comedy shows such as SNL, THe Daily Show and the Colbert Report do a great job of getting to the heart of the absurdities of politics. The SNL segement was right on the money. There has been a media bias in favor of Obama. The Daily Show focused this past week on the fear factor and the Hillary ad. The comedy shows have fun and make us laugh over the absurdities involved with politicians and their campaigns. I think that the Obama people posting on Alternet need to get a sense of humor.

Should I Laugh

about Bill Clinton and Ed Rendell saying repeatedly that Obama would be a strong vice president? Implying Hillary is the frontrunner in a race that is split nearly down the middle, with Obama currently ahead.

Should I laugh when Hillary calls McCain a strong candidate with experience, but Obama, (who's served in public office longer than she has) is only as good as a speech.

At what point does it become funny that Hillary and her supporters cry sexism whenever she needs a bump in her numbers. Didn't she claim during one debate the men were picking on her, and in another she was being asked all the questions first?

Yet there is nothing remotely racist when Hillary or her campaign implies Obama doesn't stand up to either a white man or woman.

Let's see how funny the democrats think it is if she is allowed to hijack the nomination from Obama if he has more delegates and popular votes.

And it will really be a hoot if the first Black president (Bill..lol) and his wife drives larger numbers of the Black base elsewhere. Because the stench coming from this campaign, smells the same as it would coming from the right.

SNL Losing Clout, Needs Obama Advantage
Posted by: thinkpeople on Mar 10, 2008 8:13 AM

We all know Saturday Night Live's clout is waning and they need viewers. SNL is vicariously benefitting from the Obama campaign recruitment efforts by seducing viewers to obstenibly watch Hillary Clinton. Obviously they are are getting points from running these segments, which are measured by counting the numbers of weekly new viewers stopping by. Additionally, General Electric, the owner of our "free" news outlets, including CNN, MSNBC and NBC, get to subsidize their candidate's ( Clintons) campaign without writing a check.

Think People....Hillary Clinton is not that interesting to watch. Not physically, politically, mentally or otherwise. Something else is driving this action. SNL needs to ride the Obama phenomenon just as TMZ needs the Britney Spears saga.

I'm still trying to figure out how anyone would consider Bill Clinton, who fulfilled the Republicans' greatest dream of shredding the New Deal policies that had built America's middle class, a great president. He did much to increase the economic disparities we have today, from supporting the NAFTA policies that rewarded corporations for moving our jobs to foreign countries to stripping out the social safety net, i.e., citizen insurance.

... and it doesn't take many mouse clicks to find out that SNL producer Lorne Michaels is a heavy political donor. He gives "equally" to both Republican and Democratic candidates. Definitely friends (Anyone know if Al Franken is still in the Minnesota Senate race??), and perhaps Ralph Nader, too (He's been on there - even hosted once back in the '70s).
