This Someone-Shot-at-Me Nonsense Is the Last Straw: CNN Should Fire Lou Dobbs

Posted by Roberto Lovato, Huffington Post at 7:10 AM on October 31, 2009.

By allowing Dobbs to use the incident to level spurious attacks at his critics, CNN is is seriously undermining its claim to be "the most trusted name in news."

Conflicting reports about a bullet that hit the top of Lou Dobbs' house in Sussex, New Jersey, are raising new and serious questions about the credibility of Lou Dobbs, CNN and its President, Jon Klein. Reports in the New York Post and here on the Huffington Post now indicate that the bullet was likely a hunter's errant shot. Yet Dobbs and CNN have rushed onto the airwaves, treating the incident as a de-facto murder attempt against the news host and his wife.

During Monday's broadcast on his radio show, Dobbs declared in the most urgent tone that "Three weeks ago this morning a shot was fired at my house," and that the shots "followed weeks and weeks of threatening phone calls." Dobbs went on to link the alleged attack to a vast Latino conspiracy made up of Fox News' Geraldo Rivera, LULAC, the National Council of La Raza and other "ethnocentric interest groups," groups that he says are "creating an atmosphere" that led to the alleged phone threats and supposed attack.

Spreading conspiracy theories about immigrants and Latinos is, of course, nothing new to Dobbs. With minimal evidence and maximum bluster, he insinuates that his serious critics -- none of whom endorse violence of any sort -- are somehow linked to a supposedly violent attack on his home. Sadly, such a leap is all too believable to some, like one irate Twitterer who commented "Looks like the Mexican hate groups shooting up Lou Dobbs home" or another who added "Better watch them America. These people are out of control."

To anyone familiar with the growing chorus of religious leaders, national organizations, community groups, Latinos and others demanding CNN cancel Dobbs' show, the timing of Dobbs' announcement is, at best, suspect. Last week, to coincide with the launch of CNN's "Latino in America" series, Latino groups held events across the country demanding the end of Dobb's program on CNN, attracting considerable national press, including an article in the New York Times. Then, on the following Monday, just days before MSNBC was scheduled to air an ad critical of him and CNN (an ad CNN refused to air), Dobbs suddenly unveils that his house has been fired on 3 weeks ago, and that his critics are somehow linked to the incident.

At this point, we expect this kind of faulty reporting from Dobbs. His show has increasingly given space to conspiracy theories -- like the so-called "Birthers"story -- and he has never been one to let facts get in the way of a good argument. But some of the most disturbing questions about the incident are about how CNN and Jon Klein are dealing with it.

Yesterday, Wolf Blitzer helped fan the Twitter fire with a much re-tweeted post: "Shocking news about a gun shot at Lou Dobbs' home in NJ -- while his wife was there. She is OK but a police investigation continues." Blitzer then had Dobbs on The Situation Room, where Dobbs told a "shocked" Blitzer that the alleged threatening phone calls-were "tied to the positions I've taken on illegal immigration." Rather than play the role of serious journalist by asking Dobbs how he links an incident the New Jersey State Police considers not "unusual" to alleged death threats caused by his positions on immigration issues, Blitzer simply let pass these assumptions without question and declared, "I hope they find out who's responsible for this."

By allowing Dobbs to use the incident to continue and expand his attacks on his critics without corroboration from New Jersey police or gaming authorities that the gunfire was anything more than a stray hunting bullet, Dobbs, Klein and CNN are taking potentially dangerous deviation from journalistic norms for "the most trusted name in news."

The move is especially concerning given that the struggling network is being forced by popular demand to reconsider their commitment to someone who has regularly dragged its journalistic credibility into the mud, as Dobbs has for many years. Viewed from this perspective, Klein and CNN's uncritical and unprofessional response to the alleged gunfire incident appears to indicate that it is closing ranks behind Dobbs, whose questionable behavior often brings it ratings and dollars -- and angry viewers ready to join the prime time host in his war on immigrants and Latinos.

It's time for CNN and Jon Klein to take a hard look in the mirror. That they should fire Lou Dobbs is, at this point, without question. But CNN now has to manage the fallout from this latest journalistic black eye, or risk further damaging their credibility.

In the event that the NJSP and other law enforcement officials alter course and turn the incident into an investigation of an assassination attempt, Dobbs and CNN must cease and desist from making links between the incident and immigration issues. Those links should first be made by law enforcement, not Dobbs or CNN. But, if it turns out that the incident was but another from among the many hunting accidents in the exclusive area in Sussex County, then Wolf Blitzer should retract his reporting, and other CNN shows should cover the confusion to make sure the public is aware of the truth. CNN viewers deserve better than what they are getting. And if Jon Klein can't deliver a network with real news, maybe it's time for him to step aside too.

Digg!

It appears to be a lie (the shooting was most likely an accident--by the way, when are we going to hold hunters accountable for their 'accidents'? If you can't use a gun, stay home). And even if it was true, I cannot but like the prospect of Dobbs feeling a bit of the hate that brings so many "Americans" to think that people who look and talk different are not human beings and can be beaten up just for fun. No, shooting Dobbs (or anyone) is not acceptable. But he could have turned this scary episode into self-reflection (what does hate bring people to?), and instead he chose to turn it into more hate. I can't feel sorry, no matter what happens.

for Dobbs to pack up and return to wherever his people came from and fix the mess that they no doubt left behind when they fled as immigrants; he's not from here.
Clearly, this was not an attempt on his life. CNN's credibility is zero.

Is Lou Dobbs obstructing the investigation?

Without having any evidence of who fired the weapon, let alone their motivation, it seems highly inappropriate for Lou Dobbs to lay the blame on his political opponents, especially on national TV. At best he's poisoning the well should the perpetrator be caught and have to stand trial. At worst he could be interfering with an ongoing investigation, which is a crime itself.

At this point, he should remain silent and let the police do their work. CNN should rebuke him and apologize for reporting Lou Dobbs' theory without any supporting evidence. Because, as far as we know with the available evidence, Lou Dobbs shot at his own house to increase his ratings and the outrage of his followers. I'm not saying he did, but without evidence that theory is equally valid.

What an opportunity to use a random shot to promote his anti-immigration program!
Dobb's ratings dropped when he focused his energies to following crooks like Enron. Forget that he missed the biggest crooks in the Bank Bailout Scam.
The War on Brown People gets much higher ratings. Put up fences. Control the border. Jail illegals. Fines for employers, too. Attack those who cannot fight back.
Oops, now, they are shooting at him!
Take that, O'Reilly!

A WORD ABOUT SUSSEX, NEW JERSEY

It's a beautiful, rural, undeveloped area of the state. Lots of farms. My guess is that Dobbs may have heard a shot, but most likely it was a hunter unaware that he was on private property. It happens all the time and Dobbs knows that. The Sussex Police can't possibly investigate every shot that someone hears. It's impossible. ANNA

Only "two" sides to every story

Yes, compared to FOX News, CNN is an oasis of rational discussion, informed debate and public education in the Newton Minow's unredeemed "vast wasteland" of network television ... but so was WKRP in Cincinnati! Wolf Blitzer is just Les Nessman's evil twin.

The CNN format is "all 'disinfotainment' all the time." It pits Democratic "strategists" against Republican "strategists" in scripted, orchestrated and choreographed "debates," exploits the kidnapping of pretty white girls (no matter whether they're found "brutally" murdered or "miraculously" rescued), feeds on phony celebrity, breathlessly awaits the next O. J. Simpson, Scott Peterson or Michael Jackson, fills in the gaps by demonizes foreign enemies, dismissing friends and ignoring real issues of poverty and disease in preference to fires, hurricanes and floods (which provide much tastier film footage), contributes mightily to the "clash of civilizations" and sends Sanjay Gupta (who "declined" a position in the Obama administration because he wanted more time in the OR) on assignment almost anywhere on the planet at any given moment.

At CNN, there are always two (and only two) sides to every story ... one ten degrees to the left of the American center and the other ten degrees to the right of the American center, which is about thirty degrees to the right of any other modern, developed nations.

Only in America are capital punishment, the teaching of evolution and universal health care even remotely controversial. Only in America is Sarah bin Palin even conceivable. Yet, the "best political team on television" continues to feed the people what the people think they want, and what the corporate sector teaches them to want through (what else) addiction to CNN.

What are You saying?
Posted by: lclark on Nov 2, 2009 4:51 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
That Dobb's lied about the threatening phone calls received?

That a bullet did not hit his home?

That he made an incorrect inference and should not have called the police?

Or did he receive those phone calls?

Did a bullet hit his home?

Might it have been an attempt at intimidation?

There is quite a bit of spin and distortion that goes into events, so what is the author saying didn't happen?

The threats or the shots?

And given the context perhaps the inference was wrong?

Police report indicates this was a SPENT BULLET
Posted by: oregonstu on Nov 2, 2009 7:01 AM

Not only did this bullet hit near the roof of the house, not only did this occur in a rural area during hunting season where there have always been numerous gunshots at this time of year... but everyone seems to be missing the significance of the fact that the bullet DID NOT PENETRATE the vinyl siding of the house. Bullets can travel for miles, gradually losing height and force. This was a spent bullet that was clearly fired at a great distance from the house, and there is no way that this could have been a deliberate attempt to kill Dobb's wife. That is why the police are NOT investigating the incident.

CNN NEWS?

CNN is not a true news organization. They have admitted they only report what will get them more stories to broadcast. If it is a story that might upset someone in power they don't bother to mention it. They have admitted to this in the past and have given no reasons to show they no longer operate in this manner. How could we be expected to believe in CNN as a "news organization"?
