Christian Groups Block Showing of Darwin Movie in U.S.?

Posted by Tana Ganeva, AlterNet at 1:20 PM on September 14, 2009.

A film about Charles Darwin that is being shown throughout the world can't find a U.S. distributor.

This is the kind of thing that makes it really easy to rant about brainwashed Christians like an angsty high schooler, or snottily proclaim that Americans are stupid and you're moving to another country: a movie about Charles Darwin shown almost all over the world won't play in the U.S. because the film has been turned down by American distributors. Yes, a movie about a 19th century  scientist who developed a theory uniformly accepted in the scientific community has been deemed too controversial for distribution in the U.S.

According to the Telegraph UK:

US distributors have resolutely passed on a film which will prove hugely divisive in a country where, according to a Gallup poll conducted in February, only 39 per cent of Americans believe in the theory of evolution.

Movieguide.org, an influential site which reviews films from a Christian perspective, described Darwin as the father of eugenics and denounced him as "a racist, a bigot and an 1800s naturalist whose legacy is mass murder". His "half-baked theory" directly influenced Adolf Hitler and led to "atrocities, crimes against humanity, cloning and genetic engineering", the site stated.

The film has sparked fierce debate on US Christian websites, with a typical comment dismissing evolution as "a silly theory with a serious lack of evidence to support it despite over a century of trying".

Jeremy Thomas, the Oscar-winning producer of Creation, said he was astonished that such attitudes exist 150 years after On The Origin of Species was published.

"That's what we're up against. In 2009. It's amazing," he said.

"The film has no distributor in America. It has got a deal everywhere else in the world but in the US, and it's because of what the film is about. People have been saying this is the best film they've seen all year, yet nobody in the US has picked it up.

To be fair, we probably can't entirely blame Christians. While the Christian media outrage machine is pretty formidable, it's doubtful the U.S. movie industry has been cowed by some ranting on Christian comment boards, or the prospect of a boycott (that's why Hollywood still produces slightly more movies with sex and violence, rather than Jesus, as their major themes).

Probably a bit of cost benefit analysis going on: despite the free publicity generated by riled-up Christians, people will hardly flock to a British-y movie about a 19th century scientist -- at least not enough to outweigh the branding headaches created by screaming, sign-wielding Christians. So, this is your fault too. Or, perhaps the savvy BBC producers are playing up the controversy to trick you into going to a smart movie about history and science. Let's hope for the latter.

Digg!

Darwin's family (including Darwin) was very active in the abolitionist movement. He was quite progressive, and a man of remarkable intellectual honesty. Sure, you can find sexist and racist statements in his writing--big surprise in Victorian England. He was a man of his times, with amazing insights and blindspots. I'd say that his views about gender and race are quite enlightened compared with many of today's right wingers. Moreover, Darwin was responsive to evidence and facts--today he'd probably be as opposed to sexism and racism as one may wish.
As for Hitler, an often forgotten detail is that the guy was Catholic, and his Mein Kampf oozes God from almost every page. This fact is rarely mentioned--I often have to correct students who assume that Hitler was an atheist.
Frankly, I am surprised at the producer's surprise. I mean, where does he live? Is he so out of touch with US culture? There's always some nice US producer for crappy violent movies or slashers where some attractive half-naked woman is tortured and killed. This is what good American Christian producers invest on. Jesus would be proud.

These past few weeks, every conservatroll that I have come across has been telling me that progressives are denying them freedom of speech due to our criticism of their nutty activities, like carrying guns to public meetings.

Now those very same people are screeching and trying to ban something as innocent and inane as a movie about a father of modern science and his work?

Just goes to show that a squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Biological and Social Extinction

Let's look beyond the Creation vs Evolution debate and look at what sector of the Human race shows clear signs they have never been able to compete and who's numbers are in serious decline because of lack of 'fittness' and Adaptability
Whites are outnumbered and have always been.
Males have been outnumbered and will always be
Christianity is at best comes in 2nd, but 'evangelicals' are near the bottom of the list of ideologies.
So let's guess which group hates the Theory that those that are Weak and worthless to the species will be the ones to go extinct.
These Teabaggers aren't just mad a Bi Racial man was elected- they see him as an affront to their survival. He reminds them that they are slowing being weeded out of the species- and rightly so they have been a detriment to Humanity.
Can't you just smell the Fear coming off that puddle of white males in DC on 9-12? Why do you think they are willing to harbor the White Supremists and Neo Nazi's in their Party of 'Family Values'?
White male Christians Know they are Not the "Origin of the Species" nor have been, or ever will be, the 'fittest'-By Race, By Gender and By Religion.
We are witnessing the Hysteria of a human 'breed' which is in it's death throes.

I say, if US movie distributors refuse to carry this movie, then BOYCOTT them! That's right. If you live in America, see no more movies at all, either in theaters or by renting videos or watching movies on cable or satellite, until this movie gets a US distributer!

This whole thing reminds me of the American ending to the movie Brazil. The key ending scene was cut out in the US because Americans are so f***ing lame. The end of Blade Runner was cut out here too.

And is that 39% believe in evolution stat true? I know Americans are stupid. But I had no idea they were THIS stupid!

Comparing IQ's

Many years ago -- even before the Bush era, I saw some stats that claimed that the average IQ for the Japanese -- where I assume the average IQ of Americans was set at 100 -- was 120.

This means that if the average IQ of the Japanese was set at 100, then the average IQ of Americans would be about 83.

In other words, compared to the Japanese, the average America is literally retarded!

I would bet that these numbers hold up somewhat when comparing Europeans to Americans too. And things can only have gotten much worse for Americans, relative to the rest of the world, over the last decade. (Can anyone say: Fox News dumb-down?)

I am so angry at myself and my friends and like-minded people for putting up with having our great country, the United States of America, reduced to the lowest common denominator possible. This is a great country, and we can't accept science yet?? How long can we last as a vanguard of the world, if our nation refuses scientific findings? How long before the rest of the world gets tired of waiting for us, the Great United States of America, to catch up? As Saint Joan (Jeanne d'Arc) says in The Lark "O God that madest this beautiful earth, when will it be ready to receive Thy saints? How long, O Lord, how long?" How long before we grow up and become adult humans??

Also, I don't get how these two ideas are mutually exclusive: I personally don't have any problem reconciling the two---Origin of the Species and the teachings of Jesus. My question to the right wing "christians": Which Jesus? and how does the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth have even a whit to do with the lunacy espoused by the right wing "christians" in the name of Jesus? Which Jesus? Poor Jesus. The inclusion of right wing "christians" does attest to Jesus' great compassion, huh? but poor Jesus..........

The film 'Hypatia' also denied distribution

I was annoyed when reading about the current lack of support for both these films.

" This film starring Rachael Weisz as the forth century scientist Hypatia of Alexandria is also without an American distributor at the moment. For those not familiar with the story of Hypatia, she was the curator of the great museum of Alexandria. She was also the leading scientist of her time. But as a woman and someone who had voiced serious doubts about the existence of God, she became a target of religious hate. A Christian mob finally came for her and tortured and murdered her in ways that would make the Passion of the Christ seem like a rated G film by comparison. The museum which was the center of scientific achievement and knowledge was later burnt to the ground. Some histories consider the murder of Hypatia to be the beginning of the Dark Ages. "

I'd go just because it IS a movie about a 19th c British scientist, choc full of intellectualism and sans any exploding cars or tit shots. That being said, however, when ever the Christian morality police step in and effectively sensor a film or book, I'm there - 1st in line, and with as many friends as I can cajole into it.

Maybe it's just not a very good film.

DaVinci Code did quite well in the US (much to my amazement, I couldn't sit through it). Maybe if the film makers had attached Tom Hanks and Ron Howard they would've gotten a distribution deal.

so many films are made each year. So many do not get distributed. and it is not always the good films that get distributed. but it is not always an outside group preventing things from happening. If there were money to be made with this film- it would be out there. Trust me, someone in the film industry would pick it up and would distribute it.

Mrs. Palin stated on a tape aired last year before the election to military going to Iraq that this is a holy war. Enough said? That first happened in 1099 and for centuries after that. Now we have the brightest and best that cannot believe the earth is any older than 6000 years. I know some of those people and I know one who will not send his children to public schools because they will teach "Darwinism". Wow! Who would a thunk it? Actually teaching not a theory but a proven fact. Had your flu shot yet? Read up on how the Aids virus transposes itself into a entity that the modern drugs cannot get to. It will scare you. Science does not and should not compete with religion (I am not religious) because one is myth and the other is logic. Myths keep you in a land of peace unless you are a Palin or her ilk and the other saves lives and makes our world a better place because we know so much more about it.

Wake up kids, you're being had. I can't find any Christian groups protesting this thing. It's a publicity stunt for a flick getting lousy reviews. I predict it will open in thousands of theaters at once to get as much box office as it can before the word gets out what a dog it is.
Distributors never run from controversy. Controversy is good for business. It didn't hurt Inherit the Wind (but that was a good though inaccurate movie).
