Confirmed: Unreleased Torture Photos Did Show Rape and Sexual Assault

Posted by Staff, Think Progress at 12:50 PM on May 30, 2009.

The Pentagon lied when it said "None of the photos in question depict the images that are described in that article." Shocker.

This week, the Daily Telegraph reported that the torture photos President Obama recently decided to withhold from the public depict “rape and sexual abuse.” The Pentagon denied the report, saying, “None of the photos in question depict the images that are described in that article.” But yesterday, Scott Horton reported that he has confirmed that the photos do, in fact, “depict sexually explicit acts,” including “a government contractor engaged in an act of sodomy with a male prisoner and scenes of forced masturbation,” as well as “penetration involving phosphorous sticks and brooms.” Horton writes further:

A senior military officer familiar with the photos told me that they would likely provoke a storm of outrage if released. … Some show U.S. personnel engaged in sexual acts with prisoners and each other. In one, a female prisoner appears to have been forced to expose her breasts to be photographed. In another, a prisoner is suspended naked upside down from the top bunk of a bed in a stress position. [...]

Still other withheld photographs have been circulating among U.S. soldiers who served in Iraq. One soldier showed them to me, including a photograph in which a male in a U.S. military uniform receives oral sex from a female prisoner.

Horton also obtained what he characterizes as “rarely seen Abu Ghraib torture photos,” which can be viewed here.

Digg!

The ONLY acceptable reason for not releasing these photos is that they are going to be used in criminal prosecutions, and those criminal prosecutions damn well better be starting NOW!!!

Incredibly Stupid

Obama's bald-faced lies about the content of the photos will cost him dearly. A string of broken campaign promises, rampant corruption and unprecedented looting of the treasury for the benefit of bankster campaign contributors and blatant obstruction of justice will corrode his credibility and political capital rapidly. Not only was it morally and legally wrong, it was incredibly stupid; the photos were already out there, and the truth came to light faster than he imagined.

All the talk about Bush's stupidity and Obama's brilliance notwithstanding, I don't see much difference.

Like a scene from Gulliver, the "Fail, America!" Party obsesses over a motto whose spirit they vigorously eschew. Or worse, relentlessly test.

How I wish this were fiction. I deeply pity these lost souls and count my dad among them. Many modern conservatives are so far out of the reality loop that it is very disturbing. Don't adopt their tactics, it's the road backwards.

The first US coin had the following motto, which I would like to resurrect:

LIBERTY, PARENT OF SCIENCE & INDUSTRY

It's called TORTURING DEMOCRACY and it is one of the most chilling things I've seen on this subject.

This is not something we can sweep under the rug and forget. These are REAL PEOPLE who have suffered horrendously at the hands of sadists at the very top of our government, and they MUST be held accountable for these crimes.

Every one of us needs to watch this documentary and see what has been done IN OUR NAME.

Any suggestions as to what we, collectively, can do is welcome. I'm numb after watching this. I don't know what can be done. But something HAS GOT TO BE DONE.

A Little Dignity and Respect for the Victims, Please

This is a horrific revelation and prosecution is required, but to release these photos for World wide public consumption would only serve to further humiliate and disgrace the victims.
These photos should only be viewed as evidence by those who are involved with prosectuing ALL those who perpetrated these crimes- from those who gave the OK to those who performed them.
Seems the Bushies reviewed all acts which constitute Torture and abuse and added them to the 'Enhance Interrogation techinque' field manual.
Heres a question what is the sexual Orientation of the men who performed these acts of rape and sodomy? Heteros I'm guessing.
Just like in prison many heteros rationalize their homosexual activities as 'necessary'. Those who raped or sexual abused the female prisoners are sexual predators given a Captive group of victims. These are the Sexual Deviants (criminals) who should not only be drummed out of service, but convicted of their Felonious crimes. It is not a matter of you sexual orientation, it's the illegal and disrespectful behaviors you engage in which bring dishonor to the Uniform, the Unit, The Military and the Country.
As for the Private Contractors- their employees and the company should be prosecuted for not only these acts of violence, but for engaging in criminal activities while Representing US, under contract, which could potentially endanger the Citizens of this country (Treason).
Additionally they should all be prosecuted for Terrorist acts against these detainees.and should any act of retribution be committed against US, they should then be subsequently tried as instigators/facilitators.
It's not these photos I need to see splashed across my TV screen on the Cable Loops, its the faces of the criminals who committed these atrocities being sentenced for their Crimes.

The Pentagon cannot be trusted regarding ANYTHING, whether it be what is in these photos, or how many civilians we killed in air attacks in Pakistan, Afghanistan, or Iraq.

The Pentagon is the Devil (The Pentagram).
They are evil incarnate.

And the Obama administration is as well. (Even if a tad better than the Bush administration.)
Just today there is more news about the current administration's abuse of the "states secret" defense.
How are they any better than the Bush administration?

And you know what makes me sick to my stomach? The fact that the Republican candidate for president in 2012 will INEVITABLY be infinite in his/her evil, even more so than Obama.

And we will all have to vote for Obama anyway.

I am probably a minority in terms of wanting this whole thing prosecuted out of the US. BUT IT MUST BE PROSECUTED to the fullest. My thoughts are there are too many alliances..political motivations, corporate motivations, party motivations, media motivations, called-in favors..to get to the bottom line of who did and ordered what if trials are held on US turf..

This ongoing 'questioning' about torture committed by US troops, mercenaries, command structure is absurd in the extreme, and a damnable waste of money. THE US IS A COUNTRY THAT TORTURES IN EVERY WAY. I SAW IT IN VIETNAM AND IT'S EVEN MORE LIKELY AND WORSE UNDER A BUNCH OF UNDERTRAINED FOLKS THAT FELL AT GEORGE'S FEET TO "PROTECT" THE US FROM TERRORISM, BY INFLICTING TERRORISM. YES, A MORE DIFFICULT CONUNDRUM WHEN DEALING WITH STUPID PEOPLE. We know they did it, George et al ordered it, and THAT'S IT! Any intelligence agent will tell you that a prisoner will tell you anything to keep from torture. Dick Cheney is an expert on NOTHING except lying. He should be dead, but instead, is roaming about the countryside expectorating his perverse, diseased view of the Bush time of squatting. Even Larry Wilkerson says he is frightened, paranoid and etc. Torture is not a tool for an effective, sophisticated military force. Never was, never will be. There are countless pictures and other forms of media depicting americans in the act of torture. As usual, the Enlisted people are in jail, and the Officers are enjoying "tube steak.'

I am ashamed to say I looked at these photographs. Naked man with dogs being pushed
at him; blood everywhere; some rapes with objects. And our soldiers did this. Wonder why they commit suicide when they come home --
probably cannot face these atrocities. We should all be ashamed of man's inhumanity to
man. I am.

OH, MY!

Those poor, innocent, abused people!

It amazes me how quickly…and selectively…you, touchy-feely, warm-n-cuddly types forget stuff like:

1) On 9/11, while the rest of the civilized world was expressing remorse, news footage showed the average Iraqi man and woman in the street celebrating, cheering insanely, burning US flags, laughing, dancing around and firing guns into the air. They were absolutely thrilled that 3,000 US citizens had been slaughtered by their "brethren". And, somehow, I rather doubt that Saddam forced them to react as they did!

2) After the invasion of Iraq, a van filled with US civilian workers hit a mine and all were killed and turned to charred corpses. News footage showed a group of men…again...cheering, laughing, dancing around and firing guns in celebration of this great "victory". And, to add insult to injury, they happily dragged the charred corpses out of the destroyed van, ran to a nearby bridge and hung the bodies from it, like so much slaughtered meat.

3) And, how about all those "nifty" vids of Americans and other "infidels" being slowly…and painfully…decapitated on screen? No quick bullet to the head for those sadists. Sawing heads off is so much more satisfying!

I wonder how many of those "poor, innocent, abused victims" might have been involved in numbers 1 through 3?

I'm sorry, but I'm one of those "old fashioned" eye-for-an-eye types.

Bush was a traitor for lying to the US and the rest of the world to justify his little war, because, after all, Saddam had tried to kill his "daddy". Bush should be in prison and getting ready to face a firing squad!

That said: I'm all for getting out of Iraq…and letting the locals rot.

In a word: to hell with them ALL! I feel no pity or remorse for them.

And if you think what some of our troops have done to them is "disturbing": check out what they've been doing to each other throughout the entire Middle East for CENTURIES! They are barbarians and should be treated accordingly. Sadism and brutality: the only "language" they truly understand.
