The poor suffer the most

Stories of African-Americans:
Mobile home resident Jalonna Long sought refuge in a hotel with spotty electricity. She has a 7-month-old baby, born premature, who needs a heart monitor and an oxygen machine.

"They are all running on batteries now, but batteries don't last that long," she said.

With no health insurance, no hospital will admit them.

"You can't let that control you," sad Anne Prince, the baby's grandmother. "You've just got to keep trying to find other options."

The hotel where the family was staying did lose power, and they were not seen again.

They are like many of Katrina's victims who were already hard on their luck, now struggling to get by one day at a time.

ABC News' Steve Osunsami filed this report for "World News Tonight."

To Loot or Find?

Typical...blacks are "criminally inclined" while whites are tormented or guilt-riddened when they commit much worse...I wonder is there a secret study/research about why most serial murderers are white? I wonder if that's genetic?

Where are all the white people?

Most of the pictures I've seen in papers are of blacks wading through flood water and being rescued from houses, and of course being accused of looting.

So what conclusion can one arrive at here? Did they leave all the black folks behind or just the poor, who happen to be disproportionately black? Really, tell me, I'd like to know.

Most of the looters, and the stations were going out of their way to be fair, were black or hispanic. That's what the store owners get for trying to help those communities out.

Ugly

This is shameful. Today I heard on "Faux news" a chipper white girl tsk tskking about the trash around the superdome. "This is what happens when you get a bunch of inner city people with no place to go, etc. etc." I guess if you got a bunch of country folk in there under similar circumstances, it would be tidy as can be. The racist statements come through and the fools aren't even aware. It's ugly ugly. "Faux news" also liked showing all the talking heads patting themselves on the back for what a good job they were all doing while the people continued with nothing for days. God help us all.

of all the non African Amercans, why do you see very few pics of non-blacks with one or two infants? if they were that poor why do they keep having bbaies they cannot support? I know that Planned Parenthood gives out FREE condoms to ANYONE asking! More babies, more welfare money - and I KNOW because I have been told that this is one reason they do keep having babies by women I have met while in battered women's shelters......

Any news article for a large event can be made as racist - N'awlins mayor should take responsibility

2 photos taken by 2 different photgraphers. 2 captions written by 2 different writters. Both photos were NOT posted at the same time nor were they published in the newspaper at the same time. It is very easy to make any news story racist if you examine every news article for an opposite angle and do a cut & paste. I saw the photos up close and it is true the white people have food in their hands and the black person has a box of Sketcher shoes. Now I will do a search for a caption of a white person looting and a black person looking for food. Come on people, this is not about black and white!!!
That damn New Orleans mayor and Governor are to blame first. Are you telling me that they did not have a prior plan to evacuate New Orleans? They have known about this flooding problem for over a hundred years. There has been several articles published by scientists detailing the effects of such a disaster with many solutions. What happens if New Orleans were bombed by terrorists, what was their plan for that? I can't believe the mayor did not have a plan of evacuation. The first job of any Governor should be to speak with all the mayors and have them submit a plan for evacuating their cities. And in the future tweak it as new mayors get elected and intelligence & technology changes. I'm sure they must have considered their city a target for terrorists, since Mardi Gras brings on a lot of tourists. What the hell is with that mayor to blame the Federal government, he should take responsibility. HE IS DEFINITELY NO Rudolph Giuliani.
Why must it take a tragedy to kick us in the butts to smarten up and plan properly for events. I wish our Government was in proactive mode instead of reactive. Same thing happened with September 11th. It's a damn shame!
