Women are just plain dumber

So claims a new study that would be alarming if one of the researchers wasn't an infamous eugenicist.

Oh dear, why didn't anyone tell me that before I wasted all that money on college:

Dr Irwing, a senior lecturer in organisational psychology at Manchester University, told the Today programme on BBC Radio Four the study showed that, up to the age of 14, there was no difference between the IQs of boys and girls.

"But beyond that age and into adulthood there is a difference of five points, which is small but it can have important implications," he said. "This is against a background of women dramatically overtaking men in educational attainment and making very rapid advances in terms of occupational achievement."

The academics used a test which is said to measure "general cognitive ability" - spatial and verbal ability. As intelligence scores among the study group rose, the academics say they found a widening gap between the sexes. There were twice as many men with IQ scores of 125, for example, a level said to correspond with people getting first-class degrees. At scores of 155, associated with genius, there were 5.5 men for every woman. [LINK]

I am delighted, however, that the researchers believe women are "more conscientious and better adapted to sustained periods of hard work." Why, otherwise I'd just have to shoot myself.

But before I go back to folding the laundry, here's some information that Atrios unearthed about the other researcher who conducted this study, Richard Lynn, who also influenced the work of the authors of "The Bell Curve":

Murray and Herrnstein's claims about the higher IQs of Asians--widely cited in the media as fact--are almost entirely cited to Richard Lynn, a professor of psychology at the University of Ulster. In the book's acknowledgements, Murray and Herrnstein declare they "benefitted especially from the advice" of Lynn and five other people.

Lynn has received at least $325,000 from the Pioneer Fund (Rolling Stone, 10/20/94). He frequently publishes in eugenicist journals like Mankind Quarterly--published by Roger Pearson and co-edited by Lynn himself--and Personality and Individual Differences, edited by Pioneer grantee Hans Eysenck. Among Lynn's writings cited in The Bell Curve are "The Intelligence of the Mongoloids" and "Positive Correlations Between Head Size and IQ."

Murray and Herrnstein describe Lynn as "a leading scholar of racial and ethnic differences." Here's a sample of Lynn's thinking on such differences: "What is called for here is not genocide, the killing off of the population of incompetent cultures. But we do need to think realistically in terms of the 'phasing out' of such peoples.... Evolutionary progress means the extinction of the less competent. To think otherwise is mere sentimentality." (cited in Newsday, 11/9/94)

Elsewhere Lynn makes clear which "incompetent cultures" need "phasing out": "Who can doubt that the Caucasoids and the Mongoloids are the only two races that have made any significant contributions to civilization?" (cited in New Republic, 10/31/94) [LINK via Eschaton]

Umm, shouldn't we that make that male Caucasoids and Mongloids?

Digg!

IQ--What is that?

I am a psychology professor. I teach psychology and am therefore always looking at the latest research into the various fields of study within the discipline. One of the least understood fields within my profession is IQ. We simply do not know how to measure it. Ergo, making absolute claims about what IQ scores mean in any definitive way is pseudoscience. Obviously these two researchers have other agendas. As a professional I am embarassed by this type of self-serving claptrap. It brings to mind the old saw: Lies, damn lies, and statistics.

Keep Lynn Away From NeoCons

Gads, this is just the kind of talk the neocons would jump on to again break down the hard earned equality of the sexes.

Intelligence is both fundamental cognitive functioning and the mind/brain process of applying the mix of experience, learning, intuition, and inquisitiveness. Some apply this better than others, and some with lower cogitive levels excel because they actively apply the other attributes more fully than some smart guys. Interestingly enough, women often use available brain power better than men because they apply the other factors semi-automatically. It is a delight to watch if one is an open-minded and non-threatened male.

This is not to say that there are not a lot of Einsteins out there, but there are also a great many Eve Curies as well. The really exciting view is to imagine where the misconception that men are smarter than women is destroyed and the two sexes began to work together to discover. This could be the great new hope for humankind. By the way for this hope to occur, both parties must learn to listen to each other. A significant breakthrough in itself.
