CNBC Reporter: NYC Marathon Winner Not Really American, "He's Like a Ringer You Hire to Work a Couple Hours at Your Office"

Posted by Liliana Segura, AlterNet at 12:30 PM on November 3, 2009.

For the first time since 1982, a U.S. citizen won the New York City marathon. For sports writer Darren Rovell, "it's not as good as it sounds."

Look out, Pat Buchanan: Here comes Darren Rovell, CNBC sports reporter, and nativist extraordinaire!

Coming off of Pat's latest, "Traditional Americans Are Losing Their Country," Rovell is here to tell you that, no matter what the news media claim about that American runner who won the New York City Marathon last weekend -- the first in over 25 years! -- first place finisher Meb Keflezighi, is not, in fact, a real American.

Writing at ColorLines, blogger Jorge Rivas notes that Rovell has published a new column: "Marathon's Headline Win is Empty."

"It's a stunning headline: American Wins Men's NYC Marathon For First Time Since '82" Rovell writes, "Unfortunately, it's not as good as it sounds."
The man who won the marathon is Mebrahtom Keflezighi, who immigrated to the U.S. when he was 12, became a citizen and later trained in youth, college and professional level distant running programs. But from the moment Keflezighi won the marathon this past Sunday, the dispute erupted online: Should Keflezighi's win count as an American victory?

According to Rovell, the answer is a definitive "No."

Meb Keflezighi, who won yesterday in New York, is technically American by virtue of him becoming a citizen in 1998, but the fact that he's not American-born takes away from the magnitude of the achievement the headline implies …
Given our disappointing results, embracing Keflezighi is understandable. But Keflezighi's country of origin is Eritrea, a small country in Africa. He is an American citizen thanks to taking a test and living in our country."

Got that, naturalized citizens? No matter how long you've been here, no matter how legal your status, never forget that this is not your country.

As Rivas points out, "Keflezighi did exactly what anti-immigrant reform activists say immigrants should do. He came to the U.S. twenty-two years ago legally as a refugee and became a 'naturalized' citizen a few years after. So even when immigrants of color enter the U.S. 'the legal way' they're still not welcome."

Or at least, not fully welcome. If the United States is a corporate workplace, in Rovell's mind, these people are sort of like the part time temps:

"Nothing against Keflezighi, but he's like a ringer who you hire to work a couple hours at your office so that you can win the executive softball league."

Emphasis mine.

I've watched the New York City Marathon for years; one of the best parts has been seeing the tremendous variety of people who participate, young, old, and from just about every country on the planet -- a true reflection of what New York, and, indeed, the United States, actually is. This year, the marathon passed two blocks from where I live; as the last runners trotted by, we laughed at the sight of a runner dressed as the Eiffel Tower -- I shudder to think what Rovell must've thought of that guy.

Memo to Rovell: The United States is a nation of immigrants. Get over it.

Go here to read about the "debate" sparked by Keflezighi's win in the New York Times.

Go here to read Rovell's column in all its xenophobic glory.

Digg!

lost the argument over teh President, and now are setting their eyes on the sports world?

Under this logic, the first few US president weren't real americans, prior to the revolution they were all born in British territories. Hell Washington was a member of the British army.

Should the US no longer take credit for the Nobel Prizes won by naturalized citizens, Einstein wasn;t really an American either and you can not get less american then Bob Hope born in england!!!

This is why Rovell covers sports for a business outlet.

In a pathetic attempt to save his racist ass with more justification than apology, Rovell writes in a subsequent column that he meant to say he wanted to see a win by an American who had been totally trained in the U.S. system. Imagine his embarrassment when he found that this was true of "Meb", his new best friend.

Feh!

WHAT EXACTLY IS NEWS?

I watch almost no TV news except for PBS. If I catch a little bit now and then it's always the same thing. This comment about 'not really American' is not news. Most of what they report (?) is nothing more than useless chatter that fills the time between commercials. It's really time for the American people to put an end to these performances and that's all they are. Semi-serious entertainment. The reporters spend more time in hair and wardrobe and make-up that the cast on 90210. When newscasting was real, it took 15 minutes. How can anything run 24/7 and expect to be taken seriously. Americans can't take their country seriously because we are bombarded by people hollering about things that don't matter. What does matter can't be reported because someone might be offended. BTW the winner of the NYC marathon is a real American. I wish we could shut them up. ANNA

What the Hell does it take to be a American in this Country

According to this Clown and his limp brain excuse of a apology no one according to these Racist Nazis can be a American, so you must be WHITE BORN HERE and a CERTAIN religion of convenience to be a American.

What does this Racist boss have to say about such a outlandish statement.

I grew up in Brooklyn and I remember we use to take pride in our friends and their family members when they became a US CITIZEN, I guess now you have to be a White Racist Christian and always remember that if your different you ain't no American NO MATTER what you do.

This is totally disgusting.

Anti-illegal immigrant reform activists. Because if they were anti-immigrant, they wouldn't bother with the path to citizenship mantra, would they? It must be great to be a blogger. Paint people like you want and to hell with the truth. That's a job I'd like.

Jesus I'm tired of it. This is why we liberals and progressives get no respect. We just stand around waiting to catch someone being a bigot so that we can play the race card on them.

I think this guy was just expressing the well-known fact that East Africans have totally dominated distance running for decades. One of them moved here and won as an American. I think he's an American.

This author said something kind of stupid--but at the same time--anyone with sense knows what he was getting at.

I do have to confess the title of "American wins NYC Marathon" a litte disengenuous

Let me preface this. It may sound cliche but I'm no racist. It's true. To tell you the truth, my dad ran in the '80 Boston Marathon during an era when Bill Rodgers and those guys dominated the scene. That is until the Kenyans, Ethiopians, Eritreans and Japanese began to dominate every since. That isn't racism, look up the results and the nationalities. It's no accident. However, take solace that right now America is dominating the sport of Ultrarunning. That until the prize money comes up then look out for the Kenyans. So Americans have become a little discouraged by this. After all, we used to be top dogs like the Brits and the Sweds before us. Nobody wants to dedicate their lives to a sport where they know they have no prayer of winning. See many white basketball players? So the headline "American wins NYC Marathon" is inspiring. But, like most of us liberals; I was a tad skeptical thinking was this guy from Kenya and became "naturalized". As far the whole "how long to do have to be here to be considered America" part...I have this to say. He immigrated here when he was 12. Ironically, enough I moved from my hometown when I was 12. Basically, I grew up in my hometown and I always consider it home. That's me. I'm not sure he feels that way about Eritrea. Although, with all the chaos; I can understand him wanting to stay in the U.S. of A.

So a skinny Eritrean kid is saved from maurading rebels so he doesn't end up being a child age killer, makes his way to America, becomes educated and a champion long distance runner. And he is demeaned by some short sighted "writer." I don't think so.

Meb's story is one of which books are written and movies made. It is a story of which all Americans should be proud.

Hmmm, does that mean that U.S. Olympic 1500m finalists Lopez Lomong (A "Lost Boy of the Sudan")and Leonel Manzano (From Mexico, now a U.S. Citizen) aren't "real Americans." And Rovell does not seem to have rejected Olympic Games 400m champ, Sanya Richards, a naturalized Jamaican. How short sighted.
