"Smile, You're Under Arrest" -- that's the name of a new reality TV show starring none other than Sheriff Joe Arpaio of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO). Yet Maricopa County citizens aren't smiling as Arpaio's tactics have wreaked a lot of havoc, and fought little crime.

Arpaio has transformed his police department into an immigration-enforcement agency, gaining international notoriety in the process. Armed with a 287(g) agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and a mandate to enforce immigration law, Arpaio has taken the pursuit of undocumented immigrants to "unconstitutional extremes

Voices from across the political spectrum - elected officials, media outlets, religious leaders, and community leaders -- have been critical of Sheriff Joe, his tactics, and his impact. A July 2008 East Valley Tribune series of articles chronicling its investigation of the MCSO found that immigration-enforcement activities have been expensive, resulting in few key arrests and drawing law enforcement personnel away from investigating non-immigration-related crimes. The Sheriff's Office created a $1.3 million deficit in just three months, much of it due to overtime. To staff the immigration team, Sheriff Arpaio pulled deputies off patrol beats and used them to run the human-smuggling unit. Tactics include racial profiling, sweeps of Hispanic neighborhoods, and stops for minor traffic offenses.

While MCSO has diverted resources to immigration enforcement, response times to 911 calls have increased, arrest rates have dropped, and thousands of felony warrants have not been served. Despite the time and energy spent on immigration enforcement, the Tribune found that MCSO has had little success building cases against violent immigrant offenders or those at the top of the smuggling rings. In 2006-2007, sheriff deputies arrested 578 illegal immigrants in the course of traffic stops, and of those, 498 faced a single charge of conspiracy to smuggle themselves.

Last week, the conservative Goldwater Institute has published a report documenting how the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, under the leadership of Sheriff Arpaio, has failed to serve and protect his community. Building on the East Valley Tribune investigation, the Goldwater Institute found that, though the MCSO budget has increased at four times the rate of the county's population, violent crimes increased nearly 70%, and homicides increased 166% between 2004 and 2007 (excluding 2005 because MCSO did not provide data).

The Goldwater Institute also found that the MCSO has a bad habit of refusing to share crime statistics and other data, and in 2007, the county had to pay $38,000 in legal fees to a newspaper for withholding press releases. Perhaps most disturbing, despite reporting a high crime clearance rate, the MCSO reported that relatively few of the cleared cases - 18% -- ended with an arrest. In contrast, Phoenix had a 78% of cleared cases ending in arrest.

What does this mean for the people of Maricopa County? In April 2008 Phoenix Mayor Gordon stated that Sheriff Arpaio has created a "sanctuary county for felons" by focusing on immigration and failing to pursue felony warrants. The Goldwater Institute concludes that "MCSO has lost sight of its most essential priorities," because while while the Sheriff has succeeded in increasing his immigration-enforcement profile, he and his deputies have failed to provide their community with effective law-enforcement tactics and essential law-enforcement support services.

It's becoming clear that the self-proclaimed "America's Toughest Sheriff" and his over-the-top, media-grabbing immigration-enforcement methods are harmful to the people of Maricopa County and that local anti-immigrant policies are no substitute for comprehensive and substantive immigration reform at the national level.

Digg!

This guy is everything that's wrong with law enforcement. A complete and total authoritarian thug, drunk on power.

It says a lot about our culture that this is the kind of PUBLIC SERVENT that gets a reality show. Shameful.

How could one be accused of racial profiling if you are looking for Mexican or South American illegals? I'm assuming one wouldn't stop someone that looks European for example.

This problem wouldn't exist if our government took some action themselves.

Arpaio is a sociopath. He should be locked up in his own tent prison, in June; fed green bologna and moldy like the PRE-trial people he holds there. Innocent until proven guilty is a foreign concept to this SOB.

When, in cultural and social areas, in economic areas, and in political areas the Corporate State is placed above the population and role models of Command are propagated, we are no longer, in any sense, in any area of liberty - concrete or abstract, particular or general, part and whole.

That is Engineering. We are there. Rhetorical "Hands" in the realms of ethics and physis are consciously sculpting "The Mass".

With liberty ipso facto negated, the entire House collapses.

We are there.

Free: "no lord or man above me; above no lord or man."

What would the free man do? What would the free man think?

Is Arpaio himself a free man by the above definition? If not, why is Fox presenting him as a role model for our growing next generations? Is Murdoch a free man by the above definition?

By the above definition, are we not all liars and hypocrites when we utter: "land of the free"?

The full weight of the Corporate State upon the people: Blood and Soil. Reich.

All without a shot being fired.

Its called law enforcement for a reason...if more sheriffs would stand up to Mexican drug runners and those who continue to cross our borders we would not have the problems that we have.

Reality is that Americans need to man-up and do what is needed to keep Mexicans on their side of the border. Please stop giving the sheriff a hard time for doing his job to protect those who do not want Mexicans living in their neighbors.

I live here in Phoenix. You don't want to be pulled over by a sheriff's patrol. Under Joe's leadership you are just as easily sent out to tent city as to be allowed to procede. Don't even think of having a drink beforehand. Your ass is grass if you do. The hubris of the man to take time out from doing his job to appear on Fox. Next election I hope to see him bounced out on his butt, never to be seen or heard of again.

Though I believe that this guy is a sociopath, I believe that the people that voted him into office got what they deserve. For far too long we the people have been apathetic regarding our civic duty not just to ourselves but to each other and future generations! We have allowed ourselves to led down this slippery slope like sheep! Unfortunately, we are now sliding quickly, and now people want to start pumping the breaks!

We have abdicated our responsibilities and the best that I can hope for right now, is that enough people will not watch this show and it will be taken off of the air! Hopefully, the people will vote this guy out of office!!!!!

Crime is the real problem on the border. Of course, poor and defenseless people desperate for work and a safe place to live, are easier to catch than hard-core drug lords.

And another important factor is that the drug and slave movers are a lot richer and can be tapped for more cash, right?

The ONLY reason that you stop someone, is their races.

As much as I like his "tent city" idea (and I do), Arpaio has been locking up legal immigrants and natural citizens, because they are the wrong color.

That is profiling, and it is wrong.

I live in a small town at least 500 miles from the nearest border. In the last few years I know of several people who were hit by illegal aliens. The local police will not even write them a ticket. Maybe I have a "small town" mentality, but it is offensive to me that a tax paying citizen is fined while a criminal is ignored. I have read that 75% of the arrest warrants in LA are for illegals.
My only problem with Sheriff Joe is it may be to little, to late.

Only in America or possibly Europe

What a sick idea for a show. They can pretend it is about “immigration enforcement” but it is obviously about dehumanizing and humiliating Hispanic people. A show starring a self righteous white American going after destitute Hispanic people is repulsive. The fact that these people take such measures to come here should speak for itself. I am certain most Europeans like to believe that people of “the third world”, a term Europeans love, suffer due to their racial inferiority. The truth, however, is there was no “third world” until Europeans created one, all over the globe. This is the way in which white Europeans regard non European people, as animals to be lassoed and detained or bombed from thirty thousand feet or tortured in illegal camps. Meanwhile I don’t see the vast majority of European people speaking out against this vile display. In fact these self righteous angry Europeans feel that they are in fact the victims, despite the fact that it is the “third world” that is starving and dying, while they cannot contain themselves for over consumption. Where is the outrage? I will have to assume that white people approve of this blatant racism since I do not see any real measure to addresses this. Isn’t that what European people say about Muslims anytime some Saudi lunatic blows up a building? It appears we cannot live peaceably in our own countries for fear of European invasion, yet we are not welcome to escape European tyranny either. It is as if the white man has decided he owns life itself, that we are all guests in his world and we must stay in our places and be killed or be ostracized, tyrannized and dehumanized for any attempt to escape his relentless savagery.

Can you imagine a nation in Latin America the Middle East, Asia, anywhere producing a television show where their law enforcement hunts for white people illegally in their countries? It is truly awe inspiring that anyone would accept this an appropriate idea for a show.

I wonder how many of you remember a television show called Max Headroom? It was broadcast in the later 80's, whenever that was. I am no fan of "TeeVee," but I have to admit this show was amazingly prescient. Max was a robotic talking head, a six o'clock "news" broadcaster a la Tom Brokaw, except that he was a programmable machine. It was esentially about the total commercialization of "everything." The inner cities had become war zones. Criminal gangs fought one another in a land of neo-Darwinian violence and struggle, and also the police, continuously, the police becoming involved when the violence threatened to spill out into the "comfortable" areas. The mayhem, however, had become entertainment grist for the viewing audience, the purchasing consuming public, a shrinking semi-elite with an unquenchable thirst for safe, vicarious thrills.

While those in comfortable and relatively safe
suburbs of Omaha, Atlanta, Long Island, Tampa, etc., are condemning this Sheriff for what he is doing, the notion that he is dealing with some of the most hardened, vicious criminals imaginable somehow seems to ecape them. There is also no question that many innocent people get caught up in this, however, if you do not live in these communities taking the brunt of this migration, maybe, just maybe, you should withold judgement of the people who keep re-electing this guy. The criminals that come across the border with those who simply want a better life have been forged in a crucible of brutal poverty that the poorest American citizens would have trouble, if not find impossible, to relate to. These are not the people who made up anyone's bed each morning at the Mexico City Hilton or the really cool, personable Nicaraguan bartender with all the helpful hints in Acapulco. They are the culmination of protein deficiency as children, barbarous poverty, near total cultural deprivation, and the leper status of Mexican and Central American poor. Many would kill you for ten dollars and it would mean less to them than tossing away a piece of exhausted gum.

That Fox would turn this depravity and absolute misery into entertainment (with a point, a Fox point)is completely reprehensible, as reprehensible as the likelihood that there will be an audience for this horror. That this sheriff would allow himself to be used in this manner undercuts his cause greatly. And I have no idea how pure his "cause" is. It may be simply raw power. Or his own sadism. But be careful in your comfortable burbs as you judge the people in the border areas who are enduring all of this.

Kelley is the extremist

Some of Arpaio's actions have struck me as indeed, as Kelley puts it "over the top".

That being said, a lot of what Kelley says is itself "over the top".

1). What's with this "America's Voice" business? Who elected Kelley to speak for America?

2). Kelley contends that voices across the political spectrum have opposed Arpaio's tactics.

So what? The whole political, media, and religious establishment opposed prop 200, except that the voters of Arizona approved it. Even 46% of Latino voters supported it.

So Kelley's contention that the fact that ESTABLISHMENT opposes Arpaio means that Arpaio is out of step is an argument that Arpaio is out of step with the RULING CLASS, not the general public.

And of course, since the ruling class is the only bastion of support for the extremist immigration policies that Kelley espouses, she would like to milk that for all it's worth.

But, if you calibrate the political spectrum based on the views of the PUBLIC, rather than the ELITE, then I think there is no evidence that Arpaio is out of the mainstream.

Instead, it is Kelley that is out of the mainstream. In fact, she is way out on the fringe.

SHERIFF JOE HAS PROBABLY STOPPED MORE CRIME THAN ANYONE CAN EVER IMAGINE!

Sheriff Joe Has Probably Stopped More Crime Than One Will Ever Know!
This writer talks about all the people against him - sure the either blind liberal or traitoress Aztlan supporter "open border" crowd and especially "big business" who stabs Americans in the back by giving their jobs to cheap labor illegals even though they are stealing jobs from Americans who already have a 6% unemployment rate in Arizona and there are 10 to 15 MILLION Americans UNEMPLOYED in this country as we speak. Illegals steal the jobs by accepting much lower wages (which big business loves as they make out like the bandits they really are and Americans pay for it and can't put food on the table for our children!(and literally are being forced to pay for the illegals' free medical, free education for their kids who are overwhelming our schools and stopping American children from getting the American Dream). The writer forgot one thing: the reason so many of the people love Sheriff Joe is the reason he keeps being voted in over and overby the vast majority! Not only Arizonans love him, 83% of the entire country loves him!

And being a border state, our crime is through the roof. We are the "car theft" capitol of the entire country(by Mex. drug dealers). Phoenix is the kidnapping capitol of the entire country (also by Mexican drug traffickers). And we would have astronomical rates of crime from these illegals (especially from Mexico who has an agenda to take over the SW and then the entire U.S and the Continent if they can steal it and make it into the disaster that Mexico is today) if it were not for Sheriff Joe! These traitors who hate him should be donating money and help to him. He is helping this country more than any Sheriff I know! GO JOE! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK - THE PEOPLE ARE BEHIND YOU!

You are rather uninformed if you think Fox is "conservative".

Fox is run by neocons, not conservatives.

Neocons are not conservative. Exactly what they are is hard to pigeonhole.

I tend to think of them as a band of leftists that must have gotten ahold of a really bad batch of LSD in the 60s, and they are now a mutant group despised by nearly everyone in this country except their fellow cultmembers.

Has anyone noticed how unhinged the open-borders extremists like Angela Kelley have become lately.

I have two possible hypotheses why they have gone off the deep end:

1). They are irate that there is now an honest debate in this country about immigration policy- previously all the open-borders wackos had to do was cry "racism" and they could intimidate everyone into silence.

2). They are angry because they know the open-borders agenda has died before they were able to get it enacted into law. (its prospects have vanished along with our economic collapse)

Do not watch this trash, not even out of morbid or perverted curiosity. F!@# him and Fox. Do not support them with your time, attention, or dollars.
