Sen. Lieberman May Try to Stop Public Option By Joining With GOP Filibuster

Posted by Adele Stan, AlterNet at 12:32 PM on October 27, 2009.

Former Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman said he might join a Republican filibuster to stop a final vote on health-care reform.

It's hard to remember this sometimes: Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, the former vice presidential candidate, was once a standard bearer for the Democratic Party. Today he put himself forward as the potential killer of the Democrats' signature piece of legislation: health-care reform.

Since leaving the party in 2006 when he failed to garner the support of party leaders for his re-election bid (his unqualified support for the Iraq was was the big issue), Lieberman has consistently moved further to the right, even working the rope lines on behalf of Republican presidential candidate John McCain. Yet Lieberman, an independent, has continued to caucus with the Democrats, a move that allowed him to retain his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security Committee.

Brian Beutler of TPM reports that Lieberman is now threatening to join with Republicans should they launch an expected filibuster that would keep the health-care proposal announced yesterday by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid from getting a final vote on the Senate floor. At issue for Lieberman is Reid's decision to include a public option in the bill.

Harry Reid has the power to strip Lieberman of his chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and one hopes that threat will be brought to bear on him. However, it may just not matter. Clearly, Lieberman needs to be made to feel important, and he may be looking for a reason to move completely to the GOP side, once and for all. Stripping him of his chairmanship would likely give him the impetus to do so.

Why does this matter? Because it takes 60 votes to close down a filibuster, and with Lieberman and fellow independent Bernie Sanders of Vermont (fellow in only independent status; Sanders is a socialist) in the Democratic caucus, the Dems have exactly the magic number. If Lieberman high-tails it out of the Dem caucus for good, there's no 60 to hold the line on climate change or financial reform or net neutrality.  It's a nasty little game the Lieberman is playing.

Many of us from all over the nation will contribute to the campaign of who ever challenges him, just like we did for Obama. Even if they are republican. Grass Roots baby!

But what does he care, the insurance industry will hire him as a lobbyist at 10X the money.

Campaign Fiance reform is next, it has to happen or everything else is worthless.

Traitor scumbag

Recall election is too good for him.

Health Care Reform Will Not Happen

But I wish it would happen. I want a Canadian style single-payer system like Medicare that would capture 99.9% of the U.S. population.

We're going to get what we deserve because in "good times" we don't mind what the 1% creeps at the top are doing to our government and our way of life. It's not an accident. This is all being accomplished on purpose.

The health care industry has many hooks into our system - all bought and paid for long ago, and recently updated with fresh barrels of cash. Our congress-critters will vote the way of the money by which they assure their own future comfort and wealth.

Even second-rate and some third world countries have health care systems with better results and greater access than our own system.

Welcome to the fourth world.

If you want change you will have to pick up a pitchfork or a baseball bat and show the 1% what the law of the jungle looks like. They will not stop for any other reason.

They would watch us eat our young before they lift a finger for our well being.

either way they should deal with him. The Democrats should strip his chairmanship (since that seems to be something he cares about).

Randron said this on Salon. I agree.

"There are no words

Bottom line: Joe Lieberman is a lying, cheating, back-stabbing, two-faced, double-dealing,son-of-a-bitch who should have every vestige of "leadership" in the Democratic Party stripped away immediately. I didn't know how this scum-sucking bottom feeder could get any lower, but when you consider how many times Reid, Dodd, Biden, Obama et al have been screwed by this loppy-joweled, whiney-assed, snake, it's just one more slither down the slippery rungs of Lieberman's ladder to hell."

Have you ever noticed that when Republicans control Congress, we have majority rule. There are always enough Democrats to join with Republicans to defeat any filibuster effort no matter how egregious the issue is to working Americans. When Democrats control Congress, however, we have minority rule as there are always enough Democrats to join with Republicans to sustain a filibuster no matter how good for working Americans an issue is.

There are always an appropriate number of whipping boys to deflect attention from the Democratic Party leadership who are accomplishing exactly what they want no matter what the damage might be for Americans.

I thank my lucky stars every day I see this slimeball in the news. NO, I did NOT vote for Gore in 2000..... and only because of Lieberman. His ascension to Veep candidate shocked me, just like Palin's sudden choice shocked the nation.

Joe Lieberman is the most dishonest, the slimiest politico to have been elevated to one of our top jobs in decades, and that includes Tricky Dick, both Bushes, Palin and "war hero" McCain. How Gore and the Democratic leadership could pick this loser is beyond me.

Well, anyhow, I'm secure in my choice. If I had to do it again, I'd vote whichever third party candidate is on the ballot anytime, rather than give Lieberman my okay.

If the Democrats really want to be taken seriously in future, they'll have a massive cleanup on their hands. Jokers like the three who represent me, Senators Lincoln and Pryor and Representative Mike Ross will either have to shape up quickly or the Dems will see Republicans take over Arkansas, which currently has a Democratic Governor, two Dem Senators and three of four Congressional districs represented by Democrats.

Lieberman said he was opposed to the public option because he did not want to straddle the citizen with more taxes in these hard economic times. Of course, he is for healthcare passage, just not with the public option. Duh! Excuse me, but citizens will be paying, public option or not, by mandating they purchase healthcare.
Since the plan will not be out of existing tax revenues…..that is all committed to the war machine and interest payments to the financial industry, the Elephants and the Donkeys are only dickering over who we will be paying from what we have left over after taxes. “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

DEM PARTY IS COMPLICIT IN DENYING HEALTH CARE

Come on. You mean to tell me that the democrat party does not know by now that Lieberman is not with them. Hello?

This is all a show for the people to think the democrat party is pulling for us to get health care.

They have theirs. And they want to keep it and hold on to the power. They will deny the public single payer health care, even though all of Congress and Obama enjoy it, to keep the insurance industry and themselves in their cushy, elitist lives.

The democrat party, except for Dennis Kucinich, are no different than the republicans. Same status quo, business as usual, take the money and keep the people down.

Have you noticed there is always a villain the democrat party trots out for us to villify?

If it's not the republicans, it's the banks or the supposed evil insurance industry or.... Joe Lieberman.

Smoke and mirrors, people. We are our own worst enemy. Keep voting for the Obama's and the slick talkers and this is what we get.

I support Dennis Kucinich for proven allegiance to the people and real "change" not "hoping" for it.

Since it's obvious Lieberman no longer cares about the American people, let's find something he does care about and take it away. Let's stop funding Israel's war on the Palestinians. Let's give the Palestinians some parity. And Let's call it the Lieberman Palestinian Parity Bill.

What should we expect from Lieberman? His own party disowned him. He was reelected by Republicans, just as he won the first time as a "Dem" with Republican and Bill Buckley support against incumbent liberal Republican Lowell Weicker. He has also shown his true colors by supporting tax support for discriminatory faith-based private schools through vouchers, even though he knows that Connecticut voters, like those in neighboring NY and MA, would vote them down if they had the chance.

It's pretty obvious why Lieberman is trying to block health care reform. He is trying desperately to save his political hide by suckling at the teat of the insurance companies which have bribed him to defy his own party (more or less) and hoping that the relativley small group of voters in CT will vote for him again - - if he has enough money from the Insurance bribes to swamp the airwaves with ads for his candiodacy in the next election he must face. Otherwise, his
poitical career is dead in the water - - and it probably is anyyway, money or not.

Like many in Congress Sen. Lieberman is more interested in the interests of a few large rich constituents - insurance companies in Connecticut and elsewhere - at the expense of the interests of the people.

We can hope the voters will send him packing in 2014.

A corporate toady. Yuck.

Apparently Joe Liebermann doesn't think we should be able to get what Israel already has: Universal health care. Israel has a National health plan. Joe thinks Government control of Insurance is bad. I think he should tell Israel to give up their insurance and he should give up his own insurance. Our tax dollars pay for his insurance. Maybe we could get an insurance plan like Israel has: National health plan. That would be the best for everyone.

These motherF*#@$*&, get government run health care FOR LIFE. The avarage income for a Senator is 174,000 and for us the roaches the average income is around 45,000.
Most of these good for nothing prostitutes, have pre existing conditions..and if they were or had to come back to the roach coach and be a roach again they would be denied health coverage.(Fact)

Who paids for their health care? Us! with our tax dollars and for life too.. Is that bullshit or what? Help, Help I'm getting scrwed by Washington prostitutes again!!!! ooops NO ONE CARES CRY ME A RIVER!

Health care reform is crap! All they need to do is expand what they already have in place. Who will pay for it? us, don't we already pay for everything around here?..I would preffer even though I'm a roach, to pay higher taxes and know that I have FREE health care than not having heath care at all and still pay high INSURANCE COST AND TAXES To fund war and or other nasty stuff our prostitutes do with our $$$$$$$. This isn't fucking physics or science. This is common sence!

With that said, without reforming the prostitutes in Washington first and getting rid of their orgies nothing in Washigton is going to get accomplish, from education all the way Agriculture. My Question is, Why are we trying health care reform first? When we know that Washington is broken! They all need to be fired...We need to star over.or Please shut up!

I WISH YOU ALL GOOD LUCK IN 2010, I hope AMERICANT'S CAN GROW large huevos yes cojones.
DEMAND REFORM IN WASHIGTON, IT SHOULD BE OUR #1 PRIORITY... SAFE A LIVE IN THE WORLD OR FOR THAT MATTER SAVE THE WORLD IT SELF FROM AMERICA. IS OUR RESPONSABILITY AS AMERICANS TO BRING PEACE AND PROSPERITY TO THE WORLD..AND TO US.
