Evan Bayh Sticks Up for GOP Obstructionism

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 2:20 PM on July 8, 2009.

It's not enough for Bayh to vote with Republicans on key issues, he wants to help the GOP ensure there is no vote.

BAYH STICKS UP FOR GOP OBSTRUCTIONISM.... Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) told his colleagues yesterday, "Don't let the Republicans filibuster us into failure. We want to succeed, and to succeed, we need to stick together."

It sounds like a pretty simple, common sense concept. The electorate has given Democrats a chance to govern, and expect them to deliver. Members of the caucus "may vote against final passage on a bill," Durbin said, but like-minded colleagues should at least reject the idea of "allowing the filibuster to stop the whole Senate." He concluded, "We ought to control our own agenda."

Some "centrist" Dems don't see it that way.

Evan Bayh, a moderate from Indiana, said he would not be inclined to vote to cut off a filibuster on a bill if he opposed the substance of the underlying measure, and he predicted his colleagues would feel the same way.

"Most senators aren't sheep," he said. "They don't just go blindly along without thinking about things, and I don't think we want them to do that."

It's hard to overstate how absurd this is. If legislation Bayh doesn't like comes to the floor, he can vote against it. Before that, he can offer amendments, give speeches, and encourage others to agree with him. Senators, as he noted, aren't sheep. Some bills may enjoy the party's support, but not everyone in the party will see the issue the same way.

But that's not what Bayh is arguing here. He's saying he's inclined to help the failed, discredited minority block the Senate from even giving bills a vote in the first place. It's not enough for Bayh to vote with Republicans on key issues, he wants to help the GOP ensure there is no vote.

I'm reminded once again of remarks by Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who noted last week that senators in the Democratic caucus should feel free to vote for or against any bill, but being a member of the caucus should, at a minimum, mean opposition to Republican obstructionism: "I think the strategy should be that every Democrat, no matter whether or not they ultimately end up voting for the final bill, is to say we are going to vote together to stop a Republican filibuster."

The bottom line is, Bayh is arguing that he may occasionally want to help members of the other party abuse procedural tactics to block the agenda of his own party. "No" isn't enough for him. "No vote" is.

Digg!

Why is this right wing Senator labeled a 'moderate'? Time for so-called progressive organizations to help finance a real democrat to run against him.

How interesting. If this were a Republican doing this especially Palin, we'd be seeing over 100 comments by now.

there was a story here on how the Obama administration is strongarming US House freshmen to vote the administration's way. Time to start turning the funding/campaign cash screws on each and every last one of these GOP-wannabees in the Senate as well.

#@!

'Clintonites' are nothing more than Repugs in Blue Drag

Who's blocking all the progessive movements- former Clinton supporters.
Let's not forget Hillary's a former Goldwater Girl, who apparently never gave up her membership card. These DLC'ers are nothing more than Old Repugs who jumped ship when the Moral majority took over their party in the '80's. They rejected the religious Overlords, but retained their Corp Masters- merely working the other side of the street, covertly disguised in Blue. Blue Lap Dogs to the Corp agenda.
Come on Both Hillary and McCain were confederates in the Campaign- messaging each others candidacy, singing basically the same tune ("bomb bomb bomb Iran" with Hillary singing back up "Obliterate Iran").Both insinuating Obama was possibly a 'Muslim'. They were working in tantum to defeat this poltical threat to the Staus quo.
Hillary's machine (because it obviously has never been Bill's) are still working the crowd and battling the Dems from within, like an insideous cancer. It's great to have a 'Big Tent' but when it extends to the Enemy- it's time to demand a declaration of allegience to basic ideology...Civil Rights, Human rights, labor rights.. You know all the shit covered in those Three Words "WE the People".
Hillary had better get a leash on her attack dogs, because it will be HER Real Dems blame for blocking the long awaited Changes WE have demanded, and Won the Right to move forward on.
Obama was smart to keep this enemy 'closer', yet also keep her powers limited (how many 'special envoys' are now deployed in the most volitile regions?).
Look Down Hillary your RED slip is showing from under your blue pantsuit, and we are sick of YOU and 'your lil' Dog(s) too'.She Lost Get Over it!!

Bayh is dangerous

Bayh has set himself up as an ayatolla in the Senate and is trying to influence other Democratic Senators, including junior Senators. Bayh is behaving like a wheeler dealer rogue Senator who is building alliances to torpedo health care reform and interfere in other ways with the mandate of the people in November.

Durbin has to have the courage to stand up to the so-called "bluedogs". Each member of Bayh's special group have to be identified publically so that the voters can reach out to them. What are their names? Someone needs to generate and publish this list so that they do not operate out of the sunlight.

Casey, in my state of Pennsylvania, is one junior Senator who was identified to be under Bayh's influence. I have called his office and written him and I received only a vague boilerplate response. These Senators need to hear from us in numbers.

When will progressives realize they're playing a rigged game supporting the corporate Democrats?

The Democrats will never allow any bill to pass that seriously threatens corporate profits.

The Green Party doesn't accept ANY corporate money, and actually represents citizens' interests.

Vote Green!

The DLC is the Republican takeover of the Democratic Party

It has been operating in the wings to keep the Democrats from actually doing something to help people since 1990. Bill Clinton and Joe LIEberman are among the DLC founders. Ever wonder where Clinton got the backing to run for President when no one had ever heard of him? The DLC, which is merely a Republican corporate trojan horse inside the party. I have been observing the DLC in action for 15 years now and they do not mean us well. Make all the DLCers change parties so we actually know which side they are on, I say!

It makes no sense to go on about Franken being the "60th Vote" when Blue Dogs like Bayh constantly revert to their true nature--Elephants wearing Donkey Ears.

It's clear that Harry Reid doesn't have the spine to exert even a smidge of discipline against these right wing rogues. Shameful, but then what can you expect when Obama won't fight even for the sad substitute for single payer health reform, i.e. a REAL public option.

I do not contribute to the DCCC,DSCC or the DNC (since Dean is out) I contribute to individual, progressive candidates in my own, and other states and districts. I will not throw my money in a pot that Rahm Emanuel doles out to his anti-progressive anointed candidates.

CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN HAS MORPHED INTO COMPROMISE WE HAVE TO SETTLE FOR. Well, I'm not settling.

Um. Er. (Cough, choke, gag.)

So those guys (& gals) ain't sheep, huh? Man, ho boy, jeeze, shudder, twitch ...
am I ever sick'n tired of being angry, sad & disappointed in "my Democrats."

Bayh should be "Put On Notice" (immediately, if not sooner), by his Teammates, that he is expected to VOTE WITH HIS DEMOCRAT PARTY to stop the Republicans (the other guys, the opposing team, them) from doing ANYTHING to block, stifle or keep the votes from occurring. After he's shown which side he is on regarding this pretty Basic & Essential Matter, of course he's free to vote any way he chooses –– though it would be nice if he voted with us instead of a'gin us. Where are we wrong on this? The answer, natch, is we're NOT wrong.

But, can we also drop the "Moderate" Chant when we are speaking about these people (Bayh, Landreau, et al.) ... I know that the low BAAAaaaaing sound is calming –– but those sound effects are connected to a reasonably stupid. stolid, grazing animal which leaves no grass growing after passing by, just bare dirt that blows away at the first puff of opposition.

BAH: ENOUGH!!!!

m. swof.

I would love to dump Evan Bayh. I don't understand why no one runs against him. The Indiana Dem Party is actually the 'whatever it takes to keep Evan Bayh in office' party. This caused Jill Long Thompson to lose the election against my bitch Mitch because she wasn't Bayh's pick, so he took his party and went home.
