Nagin: Gustav Worse Than Katrina

*****

The New York Times reports:

Tens of thousands of residents streamed out of New Orleans on Sunday after heeding orders from officials to evacuate the city — the first mandatory evacuation since Hurricane Katrina flooded the city three years ago — as Hurricane Gustav grew into what the city’s mayor called “a big, ugly storm” and moved toward the Louisiana coast.

The aftermath of Hurricane Gustav in Consolación del Sur, Cuba, on Sunday. The storm lashed the western tip of Cuba on Saturday before heading toward the Gulf Coast of the United States.

Mayor C. Ray Nagin said Hurricane Gustav was larger and more dangerous than Hurricane Katrina, and he pleaded with residents to get out or face flooding and life-threatening winds.

“We should start to see tornado threats starting tonight and in the morning,” he said at a news briefing Sunday morning. “This is still a big, ugly storm. It’s still strong and I strongly encourage everyone to leave.”

RNC Cancels Convention Events

The Republicans can't afford to be seen in those funny hats partying while the Gulf Coast is hit once again. This was just released by the RNC:

The Republican National Convention's entire Monday night program, including an address by President Bush, apparently will be canceled as national attention focuses on Hurricane Gustav, House Minority Leader John Boehner said today.

"It is doubtful that there will be any kind of program tomorrow night" when the four-day convention was scheduled to commence, he told reporters. "The convention is going to be handled on a day-to-day basis."

Boehner, of Ohio, the top Republican in the House, said the convention is concerned about potential victims of the storm, "and the best way we honor that is to help Americans who are in need."

Although this will keep the spotlight from the Republican convention, it's not an entirely bad development for the GOP, which had faced a delicate problem of trying to distance itself from a sitting president whose approval ratings are in the toilet:

Bush and Vice President Cheney today canceled their showcase appearances ... Instead of delivering what was expected to be a political farewell speech of sorts on Monday during the convention's opening night, Bush will meet with Federal Emergency Management Agency officials, meet with emergency workers in Austin and San Antonio and then go to Louisiana when conditions permit, according to the White House.

Check this Bullshit out.

First paragraph:
HAVANA — Cubans returned from shelters to find flooded homes and washed-out roads Sunday, but no deaths were reported after a monstrous Hurricane Gustav roared across the island and into the oil-rich Gulf of Mexico.

That adjective is in no way relevant... unless you've got some other agenda you're pushing.

This huge storm gives the Republics a chance to take the focus off from them... since there were only supposed to be 43,000 people attending, compared to Obama's acceptance speech at Mile High Stadium, in which 85,000 attended. They won't have to explain why Republics have lost roughly 1/3 of their registered voters.

It also buys them time before the new Veep candidate has to go before the American people to be scrutinized -- something she is ill-prepared to do.

And cancelling the Convention in the manner they have done (press reports say that McStain "ordered" it! So, he's the new monarch?), as well as travelling to Mississippi to "monitor" the storm, he's behaving AS IF HE IS ALREADY PRESIDENT.

And it has the revolting stench of political opportunism to me, debating whether or not to turn the Convention into a "telethon" for the Red Cross! On live television, of course. Ever the humanitarians??? Do these people have no shame?Do they think the entire world suffers from amnesia?

Another thing I heard this morning (I believe it was on CNN, but not sure) was the FEMA director saying that they have it all under control, thanks to the NEW evacuation plan that has been in place since last month!!! Last month? What happened to the last 3 years?

And Bush will be in Texas... nothing new there. He said he wouldn't want a visit from him to Louisiana to "take away from the good work that is being done there." And he looked like a deer caught in the headlights -- eyes blank and blinking continuously (which he does when he's lying) and stuttering and sputtering WHILE READING A PREPARED SCRIPT.

These people make me sick -- literally sick.

I only hope that everyone evacuates and will be safe. God knows they can't count on these boneheads to do anything right. But I'm very worried that we will see a repeat of 2005. Or worse.

I want to throw up.

Where's the Science?

I'm sorry, but... Every time we've experienced hurricanes before, the emphasis has been on interviewing the meterologists and listen to them as they would say that they are not sure where it will hit land and with what strength. Now, with the hurricane many miles and hours away, everyone is only talking of it hitting New Orleans as if it were a foregone conclusion. I haven't heard anything from the weathermen - only the politicians. The same politicians that don't trust science. And it is obvious that these politicians don't care if it hits NO or not - as long as they can look good.

So the people are being forcibly evacuated - whether they need to be or not. If I were a resident and forced to evacuate, it would be my last time. If it turns out I didn't need to be evacuated, I wouldn't want to live there where every couple of years I was forced to evacuate needlessly. And if it turned out I did need to evacuate, I wouldn't want to live where I needed to every few years.

I would return to NO only long enough to pack my bags and find another place to live. Far from the madding crowd of policians and Mother Nature.

What Scientists?

What scientists was this crackpot listening to? This is another case of politicians not listening to scientists but instead making up their own realities so that they can get an audience and then so that they can look good.

I'm sick and tired of politicians (Bush, McCain, this jerk, etc.) not employing critical analysis and not listening to science to form the basis of their actions. (Recall McCain's laughter at Obama's tire pressure? That was another example of not heeding science.)

So Nagin & Mac think this will Undo Katrinas Disaster?

I was Vacationing in NOLA when Ivan started - Nagin WAITED until that morning to 'Recommend' those who could get out, should 'TRY'.I ahve no doubt that SOB did the same thing when katrina was heading his Way.That city, it's hotels and Convention centrs had NO PLANS When Ivan was heading right at them. We did not wait for any more suggestions, realized our Top Notch Hotel had NO emergency Stratedgy which would aid US. I knew then NOLA was Ill prepared for any real natural disaster. They told Us while we were their the Nuns always pray the storms will miss them, and they 'Always' do. Guess the Nuns forgot to pray when Katrina was barreling right at them.

If Mac and theGOP think filling a couple of emergency kits will undo the image and reality of Mac's Birthday Celebration during Katrina - he is Stupidier than I thought!
Mac, perhaps God was Telling YOU something with Katrina on your Birthday and Gustav on the First day of your convention and Poss. Hannah on the last day of your convention.
Maybe God is trying to tell US Something!Mac is a Disaster and Is a Clear and Present Threat to US!
These in coming Hurricanes only remind me of How many people (and property) were lost because of the ineptitude of Repugs in Power.
Arabian Horse Assoc failure, Brownie Running FEMA, Phil Gramm (Mr.Enron) Running the Economy?Just as dangerous to US.Same Shit different Puppet!
