In April, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) promised that the Democratic National Convention this week will be the “greenest, most sustainable” convention in history. The Democrats greening efforts include the use of biodegradable balloons and signage, an army of volunteers for recycling, and a calculation of the convention’s carbon footprint.

Responding to the Democrats’ efforts, conservative global warming denier Glenn Beck is mockingly calling on his listeners to participate in a “carbon ONset program” aimed at counteracting progressive efforts to offset the environmental impact of the convention. On his website, Beck is encouraging Americans to “use more energy for mother nature“:

What can you to help? Take part in our carbon ONset program. We are asking you to make just a few small sacrifices to completely wipe out any potential energy savings the Democrats claim credit for. (By ‘energy savings’, we mean buying their way out of the energy they’ll use by flying in tens of thousands of people to a city so they can announce Barack Obama as their candidate. Seems like most people already knew that, but I digress).

Sign up for our carbon ONset program. Use more energy for mother nature. Do it for the earth (or more accurately, the people living on it.)

Beck posted a survey on his website where listeners can say what they’ll do to “use more energy.” On his radio show today, he also offered suggestions for how his listeners can help “raise 70 million pounds of carbon.” Beck repeatedly kept claiming it needed to be done “for the children“:

What I’m just, I’m asking you to participate because it’s for the children. You go to the website. Now, how many, how many extra miles can you pledge? Can you drive five extra miles a day? Can you take the long way home, the long way to work? Can you just warm up your car? I know it’s August. Can you cool down your car? Can you get up like you do in the winter and just start your car?

A sense of custodial responsibility? A sense of common decency and respect? Common sense in general?

The right-wing's base of support have no point of reference for such concepts.

... it's not even something I would laugh at him about. There's a point where being contrarian, in the sake of upholding your ideology, is just insane, and I think Beck hit it here. Undeniably. Everyone, conservative (to CNBC extremes), or liberal, knows that Energy costs are killing our economy. And this freak is only intent on sticking out his tongue at the skinny kid telling us it's true.

There's a difference between pissing in the ocean and pissing on yourself. And you apparently have to be in your right mind to pick that up.

they want to see how far they can push the envelope before someone gets killed.
What they don't seem to comprehend is how fucking stupid most of their audience is, and how dangerous it is to put reckless ideas in their heads.

Can he possibly believe that bush and cheney, and other supposedly "intelligent" people are sitting around yucking it up listening to HIM?
Nope, it's rage filled lunatics with guns, who then go into a church and
blast a congregation because they feel threatened by liberals.

I wonder what insightful nugget of wisdom he'll have to impart to his "fans" now that there was a foiled plot against Senator Obama tonight.

Upon reading this, I just turned off every light in the house, except the one I'm using right now.

I'm pledging to make an even bigger effort to decrease my energy usage -- and I'll save money to boot.

Glenn Beck is a shrunken-headed idiot

It never ceases to amaze me that so many stupid Americans will actually be convinced to act against their own economic self interest. Tax cuts for the wealthy, buying a gas-hog SUV, funding the Iraq War, and now, carbon onsets. My only suggestion might be a mandatory IQ test before being allowed to vote. As for Glenn Beck, I think he ate too many lead paint chips as a child, which compounded the problems caused by an already much smaller than average brain.

We're talking about him. Game over. I know it and I'm as guilty as the next person.

This reinforces the old truism that "there is no such thing as bad PR."

Instead of talking about the freaks on the other side, we might consider supporting those who are doing the work on OUR side.

Let's see by using excessive energyfor no reason, limits the available energy, pushes up the prices and profit margins, raises prices on other necessary comodities, faclitates the need to obtain more energy resources-regardless the cost of blood and to national security,Adds more toxins into the environment-thus causing more global warming, leading to more natural disasters.....Hmmm Seems like Glen not only doesn't give a shit about Americans , he doesn't give a shit about Humanity or anything that relies on Us to survive, including the Planet.
That is not just Propagnada for the Energy Corps benefit, it is a act of treason against the entire planet- with Malice & Forethought
ADD HIS ASS TO THE LIST OF HIGH CRIME ACCOMPLICES.

It's not possible to believe that Beck was being ironic, he'd have trouble SPELLING ironic, let alone using irony.

Does anybody have any idea how burning extra energy benefits the children? What twisted logic is at work here? Does he mean the children of power company shareholders? They seem the only indirect beneficiaries.

Thank The Flying Spaghetti Monster (BBHN) I can avoid listening to this fathead.

So? He's a paid clown. If he squirts himself in the face with a seltzer bottle and climbs into a clown car with the rest of the clown troop like sad-fat-pig clown Limbaugh, or crazy-crack'n clown Coulter in her size 20 clown shoes, would that be news? My question is, why do legitimate news channels continue to denigrate themselves with these Bozos? (No offense to actual bozos.)

CNN has this nutcase on for a very good reason

People are angry. But angry about issues that you will NEVER see on CNN: serious loss of good-paying jobs thanks to NAFTA, lack of universal health care, wage stagnation going on for 25 years now, and of course the big new ones: food, gas and energy which are going to reach the unaffordable mark very soon.

Thanks to the 1996 Telecommunications Act, most information is concentrated in the hands of just 6 corporations: Disney, GE, TimeWarner, Viacom, CBS and News Corp. They control the message.
Here's a link:
StopBigMedia

The elites fear our healthy, well-directed anger, so they offer up garbage like this in order to give it an outlet. We are less likely to storm the gates. The elites know exactly what they are doing.

In order to pay for the high cost of energy, I recently dropped my satellite TV service. Best thing I ever did. Not that I ever watched garbage like this. I am just glad not to be contributing part of my income to News Corp every month anymore. I will go back to TV when they start putting on people who speak for ME.

If there was any improvement in the environment...

It would go a long way towards proving what sensible people know and what liberals have been saying. In other words, we can't be allowed to be correct and make progress on the environment, and he's obviously so scared of what happens when we are that he's got to try to prevent it at all costs!

Brings me back to what I've always said about those who think they have to exaggerate and lie to "prove" their point - if YOU don't even believe in it, why don't you just admit it and change your mind? Why are people so scared of the truth?

The sad thing is that this total moron gets paid a lot of money by CNN, no less, a news organization that once, briefly a decade or so ago, commanded some level of respect. Sadder still is the thought that the reason he gets paid a lot of of money is that he has an audience, enough of an audience for CNN to forget about journalistic ethics, integrity, or its responsibility as the fourth estate.

That Beck has any audience at all is shameful, though indicative of where we are as a nation. Bill Maher said he thinks the American public might be too dumb to be governed. He just might be right.

Beck and his ilk offer another advantage to news organizations. By comparison to them, utter mediocrities on their best days such as Wolf Blitzer, Bryan Williams, Charles Gibson, and Katie Couric to name just a few seem so much better. The stilted journalism, or what passes for journalism, appears almost minimally professional and authentic in the blare of these propagandist blowhards. The standard of what is acceptable or even tolerable becomes blurred beyond recognition.

My greatest fear is that Beck, Savage, Hannity, Coulter, Ingraham, Boot, Limbaugh et al are canaries in the coal mine. There are far too many dangerously stupid people running around in America. Nothing but bad things have, can, and will come from that.

If it looks like a clown, acts like a clown and talks like a clown, then it probably is a clown. Beck is a silly smirking clown. So let's stop giving him credence by acknowledging his clown act. It's an act designed to divert attention from the real issues, and he succeeds whenever the attention is on him instead of the issues.
