Bush OKs Navy Use of Sonar to Kill Whales, Other Mammals

"The president's action is an attack on the rule of law," said Joel Reynolds, director of the Marine Mammal Protection Project at the NRDC.

Grrr.

WASHINGTON-President Bush exempted the Navy from an environmental law so it can continue using sonar in its anti-submarine warfare training off the California coast -- a practice critics say is harmful to whales and other marine mammals.
The White House announced Wednesday that Bush had signed the exemption Tuesday while traveling in the Middle East.
(snip)
"The president's action is an attack on the rule of law," said Joel Reynolds, director of the Marine Mammal Protection Project at the Natural Resources Defense Council. "By exempting the Navy from basic safeguards under both federal and state law, the president is flouting the will of Congress, the decision of the California Coastal Commission and a ruling by the federal court."
A federal judge had issued a preliminary injunction earlier this month requiring the Navy to create a 12-nautical-mile, no-sonar zone along the California coast and to post trained lookouts to watch for marine mammals before and during exercises. Sonar would have to be shut down when mammals are spotted within 2,200 yards, under the order.
"Attack on the rule of law" should be the motto of the Bush administration. Here is just a small take on the experts that say sonar disorientates and kills whales.

Digg!

We are all whales

Maybe not as directly or immediately noticeable, but consider the growing threat of microwave radiation. Wi-fi, cell phones and cell towers, beepers, radar and satellites, wireless water meters, not to mention wired electronic devices like computers... we are awash in low frequency toxicity, an inescapable electromagnetic smog. What allows this but that brutal combo of ignorance, denial, and disinformation from the corporate-fascist state? But the studies are in, worldwide; there's no doubt anymore. Higher rates of autism, Alzheimer's, Parkinsons, anxiety and panic attacks, many other varieties of illness, (not just neurological) readily traceable to the unsustainable growth in all this radiation the past 10 years. So in a sense we are ALL whales; only, you could say, we asked for it! At least in that we continue not to question.

Every time I read about what the POTUS is doing it hurts me because I learn there is no end to the depth of loathing I feel for that man. Will this presidency ever end? Will our country ever recuperate from the devastation this administration has brought to us? We are heading fast and furious into a dictatorship, but I must remember, this president told us from the beginning that he likes dictatorships as long as he is the dictator. Imagine our world with Bush at the helm...Oh My Gawd what visions that conjers up...I cringe at the thought. I do know this, if he finds a way to stay in charge, he will, no matter what he has to do. And if he is in charge, we can relax because it will all be over very shortly thereafter. Bush isn't to blame, we are. We are letting him get away with this and all we do is shrug our shoulders. We must hold our representatives accountable for their actions. We must stop being complacent regarding our government. We fell asleep at the wheel and look where it got us. If you vote, please vote for someone who will help our country not another power-hungry, greedy, corrupt imbecile like Bush.

that Bush/Cheney doesn't have some plan to trash? We'd better hope 01/09 comes fast or else they will pave over the entire planet (except, of course, the part they can drill in for oil)!

As if whales weren't already endangered as it is. Ever see a superpod of 80 orcas? I have, and it was an amazing experience, especially when the captain of the sightseeing boat we were on put an underwater mike on these guys and you could hear them conversing in sqeaks and clicks to each other.

Tell us more. This story doesn't go far enough. How did Bush do this? By what mechanism? What can Congress do? NRDC, Greenpeace et al should immediately challenge this in court. But first--what are the safe alternatives to sonar for identifying enemy subs? We need to know this to counter the inevitable "security" arguments, that so often override reason in Bush-world. Thank you for this--please follow up with more info.
